Spring is here, and you may have kept that New Years resolution to drop some extra weight. If you did, congratulations! Your accomplishment is no easy feat, whether you lost 10 pounds or 100 pounds.

Considering nearly one in three Floridians is obese, many people may be in the midst of trying to lose 30 pounds or more this year.

With summer on the horizon, you may be motivated more than ever to continue working toward a healthier version of yourself.

Besides looking and feeling better, your overall quality of life is improving as you defeat the disease of obesity.

Im a bariatric surgeon in central New Jersey and deal with people battling very significant weight challenges.

Over the years, patients have consistently reported these benefits during their journeys back a normal BMI:

Food will not rule your life: Once obesity sets in, life is about food, first and foremost. But once you get a healthy nutrition pattern in place, you are no longer focused on your next snack. Youll realize that food isnt really your best friend, it just keeps you alive and gives you fuel to function.

You dont need the crutch of food to manage lifes challenges of daily life.

Youre going to feel so much better: Preparation is the number one key to weight loss success. By now, you have probably dumped the junk food, the sugar products and empty carbs out of your home and your diet. Your body doesnt need artificially processed foods (nor does your family).

Did you notice a week or two after you banished these empty calories from your diet that you no longer craved them? Thats your body thanking you for ridding it of these kinds of addictive toxins.

Get inspiration from online articles, blogs, magazines and books about healthy living. Prepare your body and your mind to make changes toward living a healthier lifestyle.

Your social circle will expand: Since you look better on the outside and feel more confident on the inside, youll be more inclined to go out and socialize more often.

You can also expand your friendship network perhaps you joined a Zumba class or started swimming. From a neighbor to go to Weight Watchers meetings with, to speed walking with a friend you dont see often enough, you can make your life richer while you get healthy.

You will inspire others: Having the courage and fortitude to lose weight is empowering and the people around you will notice. Granted, some people could even be a little envious of your weight loss, but most will be inspired and impressed. Bask a little in the positive attention youve worked hard for it.

You will actually enjoy exercise: I tell every patient that the biggest secret to losing weight and keeping it off is exercise. This effort requires as few as 30 minutes daily and you should try to break a sweat by the time you are finished. (Check with your doctor if you are very overweight or have other medical issues.)

Pamper Your Mind: Getting motivated to spring clean

Its your race to win

Regardless of how many clothing sizes you hope to drop, you are ultimately calling all the shots. Ready to rev up your weight loss? Focus on physical activity to boost metabolism, lose inches and improve the quality of your sleep. It also will maximize damage control when you indulge now and then.

Discover fitness activities that you enjoy start with walking around the neighborhood, jog/walk on a treadmill while you watch your favorite TV show, or play ball with your kids (they will be elated, I assure you). Have you always wanted to hike? Take a water aerobics class? Try yoga or Zumba?

The battle against the disease of obesity is often in the mind. When you see the physical changes happening, your mental outlook will improve as well.

Seize that momentum and go after your goals with everything youve got. Its well worth the effort.
