With Jim Harbaugh, direct and raw is always the preferred approach.

As it was Wednesday during his speech at U-Ms coaching clinic to Detroit-area coaches, rattling off updates on Detroit-area Wolverines.

After praising the young players, he addressed one of his valuable veterans, fifth-year senior Khalid Hill from East English Village, pointing out his need to get more fit.

Hes in a battle right now with Henry Poggi right now at fullback, Harbaugh said at the Horatio Williams Foundation in Detroit. Theres no question his talent right now, his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, block, he is a complete package as a fullback. I dont know where hes eating though. Hes finding somewhere else to eat other than our cafeteria because he keeps gaining weight.

This isnt something Im just saying, I say it to his face, too. Hes got to get the weight down. Hes too heavy right now. Its affecting his vertical jump, its affecting his 40-yard dash time.

Hill shined last year in his first year having moved from tight end to fullback, scoring a team-high 13 touchdowns and becoming effective in short-yardage and goal-line situations.

He considered early entry to the NFL but figured returning for another year could refine his game.

Now, Harbaugh wants to make sure the Wolverinesget that out of him.

Hill wasnt the only Detroit-area kid who Harbaugh wants to drop weight.

Mike Onwenu, right guard from Cass Tech, doing a phenomenal job, Harbaugh said. We played him as a true freshman. Just big powerful, square (guy.) Hes got amazing feet. Hes the heaviest guy on the team and hes another guy who needs to watch his diet and slim down. Because fat is the enemy of speed. We all know that.

When Harbaugh asked his offensive line coach/offensive coordinator about Onwenus current status, he was surprised at the response.

372, coach, Tim Drevno said.

Oh, thats high, Harbaugh said. Hes finding somewhere to eat other than our cafeteria. They need to get in best shape of their lives. This is a big year for them, especially for Khalid, hes definitely somebody that can play at the next level.

Onwenu was with the first-team offensive line in Saturdays spring game, the group that started the game with quarterback Wilton Speight. Though that line blocked for quarterback Brandon Peters team as well, Onwenu seemed to be a key piece at right guard who Harbaugh said has great technique and is vying for the starting spot.
