YMCA upgrades underway, will include new children center and fitness center – WSAZ-TV

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The first stage of a $2.5 million upgrade project, at the YMCA of Kanawha Valley in Charleston, has been completed.

YMCA officials say a renovated bathroom is only the tip of the iceberg of this project, which also aims to improve facilities for children involved in the organization's after-school program.

"Something this particular YMCA has always needed is a dedicated youth development area," YMCA of Kanawha Valley President and CEO Monty Warner said.

That need is set to be filled over the next 16 months, during which time; the YMCA will spend over $1 million to convert the current fitness center into an all-inclusive child center.

"We'll be able to have the space for educational opportunities," Warner said. "But also opportunities for them to explore drama and theater and art as well as athletic activities."

The new children's area is expected to be open by August 2018; just before the start of the new school year.

Meanwhile, the fitness center isn't going away, it's simply moving to a more spacious area within the building, making room for more equipment and an upstairs running track, all of which will be open 24 hours.

According to Warner, additional improvements will be made in the YMCA's main lobby and the men's and women's locker rooms.
