FAT BUSTER: This is how she lost her pregnancy weight! – Times of India

Most mothers have believed all along that pregnancy weight is the most difficult to lose. Well, it turns out to be that way because new moms hardly find any time to look after their bodies. The fact is that while pregnancy weight may be stubborn, it isn't impossible to lose. Saily Pall is a testimony to that. Not only did she lose her pregnancy weight, it also helped her fight post-partum depression. Here she shares her post-pregnancy weight loss journey with us...

Name: Saily Pall

Highest Weight Recorded: 66 kgs

Weight Lost: 21 kgs

Age: 37

The turning point: Being a software engineer by profession, I worked in the IT industry for more than 6 years. I started working 24/7 after my daughter was born - handling work and the baby both. I gained 24 kgs due to first miscarriage and then the subsequent pregnancy. Before pregnancy I weighed only 42 kgs. Since I am not very tall (5 feet 1 inch), gaining 24 kgs made me look extremely fat.

When I was struggling to lose weight, I started reading about nutrition. I also did online diploma courses in Nutrition and Weight Loss. As I am passionate about following healthy lifestyle, I don't believe in any kind of temporary or fad diets. But after my daughter was born, it was difficult to find time for a decent meal, let alone any exercise. So, I started to change my eating habits, one change at a time. I started doing brisk walk every single day while pushing the pram. By the end of 8 months, I was eating healthy and had stopped eating processed food. It increased my energy levels tremendously.

This change enhanced my mood and helped me with my postpartum depression. Today after 7 years of losing weight, due to the lifestyle changes I made, I don't have to struggle to maintain my weight (45 kgs). Not only did I manage to keep the weight at bay, I am much stronger and healthier today. I try to balance my meals with adequate amount of carbohydrate, protein and good fat.

My breakfast: Milk, oats / omelette with whole wheat toast or parantha / Muesli with nuts / vegetable sandwich or Idly Sambar

Mid-morning snack: A banana, apple or papaya

My lunch: Daal, chapati, sabzi with salad or sauteed veggies with chicken/fish/paneer and basmati/ brown rice

Mid-day snack: A fruit, some nuts or carrot/ cucumber sticks

My dinner: Daal, chapati, sabzi or grilled chicken/fish with veggies. I always control my portion size. And I prefer eating dinner early, 3-4 hours before I hit the bed.

My workout: A combination of power yoga, weight training and brisk walking.

Fitness secret I unveiled: Anyone can work out for an hour, but to control what goes on your plate the other 23 hours is the real hard work.

I indulge in: Whatever I wish to have, especially Thai food and ice-cream, but in moderation.

Low-calorie recipes I swear by: Baked/ grilled veggies/ fish, oats kheer

Oats Kheer recipe: Take oats and milk in a pan. Add chopped almonds/ walnuts and dried dates/raisins. Bring it to boil. Let it cook on a low flame for 3-4 minutes till the oats are cooked and it thickens. If too thick, add some more milk. Garnish with some chopped nuts and dates.

FAT BUSTER: This woman could reverse her diabetes with weight loss!

How do I stay motivated? Staying motivated is not difficult when your willpower is stronger than your cravings. It is extremely difficult to stay motivated when you are following any kind of short term diets for quick weight loss and starving yourself. But if you slowly change your lifestyle and start eating healthy, it's much easier. And once you see the amazing effects on your body, you don't want to go back. Also, while trying to get fit, I developed a passion for fitness and nutrition and pursued online courses in this direction. Now I counsel people to be fit and start eating healthy, and motivate them to change their lifestyle. Seeing people follow my advice is what keeps me motivated.

How do you ensure you don't lose focus? Staying mentally strong and believing in myself keeps me focused. Once I started seeing results, it became easy to stay focused.

What's the most difficult part of being overweight? Losing self-confidence and feeling depressed. Looking at myself in the mirror was heart breaking. Also, not being able to fit into any of your older clothes makes it worse.

What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line? 10 years down the line, I see myself maintaining my ideal weight and feeling stronger and healthier.
