Size 20 teacher who lost six stone in six months is now so fit she hosts lockdown dance classes for her pupils – Kent Live

A size 20 primary school teacher has revealed how she lost six stone in just six months.

Jacqui Church is now so fit she is hosting virtual dance classes for her pupils on lockdown.

Suffering with asthma since childhood, a life-threatening attack over the Easter holidays in 2018 put the 39-year-old from Glasgow, in hospital for a week.

Despite being given a six month course of steroids to reduce the swelling in her lungs and told not to exercise, she still used her inhaler to ease her breathing three times a day and, scared of having another attack, took the lift, rather than climbing just 10 steps at work.

Lacking exercise and overeating because of the stress, Jacqui who describes her partner-of-15-years, Scott Miller, 49, an admin worker, as her rock said: I wouldnt even walk to the local shops, as I was that scared of inducing another attack.

She said: I started piling on the pounds and noticing that my clothes were getting too tight, plus, of course, I turned to food to cheer myself up.

The combination of inactivity and comfort eating soon took its toll, seeing 5ft 5in Jacqui, who usually weighed around 12st and wore a size 14, soaring to 16st 3lb and filling out a size 20.

She said: I remember a friend offering me her sisters old clothes, as shed lost loads of weight.

Of course, she was trying to be kind, but all I could think was, Great. Im getting fat clothes now as hand me downs.'

But Jacqui, who before gaining weight, had regularly completed 5km runs, said her real wake-up call came in May 2019, during a routine asthma check.

With no signs of improvement, her doctor bluntly suggested that she needed to lose weight.

The doctor was quite cheeky. He looked me up and down and said, You know what the problem is dont you?' she recalled.

Of course, it was hard to hear, but in a way he saved me. I was on a path of self-destruction.

Jacquis problems began during Easter 2018, when her inhaler stopped alleviating her asthma symptoms and, realising something was wrong, she stepped into the living room, where Scott saw her lips turning blue and rushed her to Glasgows New Victoria Hospital.

I had the beginning of a cold and all of a sudden I felt sick and couldnt stop coughing, she recalled. Scott said I didnt look well and we called NHS 111 who recommended going straight to hospital.

Given oxygen and steroids, she was discharged a few hours later when everything returned to normal, but was told to keep her inhaler on her at all times.

When the same thing happened the next day, she went back to A&E, but was transferred to the citys Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and kept in for a week, when her oxygen levels failed to return to normal.

Id gone from using my inhaler once or twice a year to barely being able to breathe on my own it just didnt make sense, she said.

Told she had suffered an asthma attack as a result of a chest infection, when Jacqui was discharged she was put under strict instruction not to exercise and given a course of steroids to take over four days, which would be repeated three times, over a period of six months.

Steroids do very strange things to your body and it didnt take long to notice my figure starting to change, she said.

Theyre so powerful I was only allowed to take 12 days worth over six months.

But Jacqui soon accompanied her inactivity with overeating carbohydrate-heavy food and snacking on crisps, to cheer herself up estimating that she was consuming around 2,500 calories a day 500 more than the 2,000 recommended for women by the NHS.

And, by the time of her May 2019 check-up, her body mass index (BMI), used to measure a healthy weight, was 37.8 compared with the range given by the NHS of between 18.5 and 24.9 making her obese.

Referred by her doctor to her local WW slimming group the following month, Jacqui admits the first meeting was a daunting experience.

She said: I knew I couldnt turn the opportunity down, but that first meeting was nerve-wracking. I felt like the biggest one there and I kept thinking, Please, no one look at me.'

She continued: I had tears in my eyes, it was like someone had finally held a mirror up to me.

But she found the point based eating plan marvellous and, cutting her calorie intake down to 1,700 a day, she lost half a stone in her first week.

From that moment, I knew I could do it it became a competition, she said. I tracked everything I ate, cooked everything from scratch and made sure I avoided anything dodgy.

She added: More important than any of that, I finally exercised some self-discipline. Being able to turn down treats in the staff room felt so powerful.

And Scott supported her every step of the way.

She continued: Hes been my rock throughout all of this especially halfway through, when I still wasnt seeing the results I wanted.

She continued: Hed just completely grounded me and reminded me how far Id come.

Reaching her target weight of 10st 10lb in December, now a size 10, Jacquis weight loss has transformed more than just her waistline.

Its like going from night to day, she said. I dont use my inhaler on a day-to-day basis anymore in fact its probably been out about once in the past six months.

She continued: Im running up to 10km three times a week and Ive even joined the gym.

Now Jacqui says her biggest accomplishment has been helping her pupils stay fit during her schools coronavirus lockdown.

She said: Its been such an incredible turnaround and Im so chuffed to be in a position to help other people feel good about themselves.

A year ago, I couldnt bear to look at myself in a mirror, but now I post up to four videos a day which Ive recorded of me giving dance and gymnastics classes, which last around 10 minutes each. I used to be in charge of the after school club, so its a way of carrying that on.

Losing the weight is great, but Its even more important that I am able to do this for my pupils during these crazy times.
