Many joked about gaining the quarantine 15 when they were stuck at home for so long. Now, some popular diet trends are heating up again online.

With most gyms now back open and some people even looking to ditch those possible quarantine gains, some trending diets are creeping their way back into our social media feeds.

They include Keto, Paleo, and Vegan, just to name a few.

So what are the most significant differences between a vegan and a meat-eater diet?

Newswatch 16's Ryan Leckey teamed up with a pro to take a bite out of these topics and more.

Jessica Bachman, Ph.D., is a registered dietitian and Director of Nutrition Education for Stronger U Nutrition. It's a global nutrition coaching company with 40,000 members in 50 countries.

The bottom line for weight loss:

Any diet that is well balanced and includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, and lean protein sources will provide the greatest health benefits.

Diets high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains linked to decreased risk of diabetes, study says – Atlanta Journal Constitution

The findings of two new studies link a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes to a high consumption of fruit, vegetables and hearty whole grains.

The studies, recently published in The BMJ according to Science Daily, suggest that even a modest increase in consumption of these foods as part of a healthy diet could help prevent type 2 diabetes.

RELATED:WHO now says theres emerging evidence of airborne transmission of coronavirus

For the first study, researchers looked atthe association between blood levels of vitamin C and carotenoids, pigments found in colourful fruits and vegetables, with risk of developing type 2 diabetes. After studying9,754 adults who developed new-onset type 2 diabetes and a comparison group of 13,662 adults who remained free of diabetes, researchers foundthat every 66 grams per day increase in total fruit and vegetable intake was associated with a 25% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

RELATED:New cancer prevention guidelines say to skip booze and this food

In the second study, researchers in the United States examined associations between total and individual whole grain food intake and type 2 diabetes. After examining 158,259 women and 36,525 men who were free from diabetes, heart disease and cancer, they found thatparticipants in the highest category for total whole grain consumption had a 29% lower rate of type 2 diabetes compared with those in the lowest category.

Both research teams cite their findings as further evidence that adding more fruits, vegetables and whole grains to your diet can lead to a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Santa Clarita Diet Season 4: Will Drew Barrymore return in the upcoming season … – Next Alerts

Seems like Santa Clarita Diet wont be coming with its fourth season. The streaming platform, Netflix has canceled the much-liked show apparently due to low viewership. Santa Clarita Diet is an American hor-com TV show that first aired on February 3, 2017. It is created by none other than Victor Fresco.

Here is everything you need to know about Santa Clarita Diet Season 4.

The second season released on March 23, 2018, with the next season coming around the same month in 2019. It was announced on April 26, 2019, that the show wont come for another season that took the fans off their feet and not in a good way. It is unlikely that it will be picked up by another channel, for the clause in the contract with Netflix that does not allow it for two or three years. Having said that, we dont think there ever will be another season to watch.

If it ever is picked up by any other platform, we can expect the familiar faces back on the show. Drew Barrymore will play Sheila; Timothy Olyphant will play Joel. Other returning actors include Liv Hewson, Skyler Cisondo, Mary Elizabeth Elis, Natalie Morales, Jonathan.

With the show being canceled and all, we dont know about the plot details of the season. Regardless, the show left with a lot of questions unanswered, which will remain so in the far future as well. If a Season 4 comes to be, it could start with clearing some of the hanging points of the last season. Sheila bit Joel in order to save him. Could it mean that Joel will become a zombie too? How would it affect their relationship? We have no darn clue since Season 4 is dead and buried.

Sheila and Joe are two real estate agents in Santa Clarita. After having eaten infected clams, Sheila undergoes a metamorphosis which makes her undead. Basically, this means that her heart has stopped but she is alive. With this transformation, her diet changes, now lusting for human flesh. Her husband does not leave her side throughout all this, cleaning her tracks wherever she hunts to satisfy her urges. They attempt to deal with their new normal as best as they can and understand how this occurrence originated.

The makers of the show Victor Fresco and Tracy Kautsky stated after the cancelation of the show reached to them and I quote, Netflix took a chance on this odd show, and we will always be grateful for that. They were supportive, ever positive, and appreciative of our work, until about noon today. Still, they were just one phone call away from being a perfect studio. Not bad.

Fans are disappointed with the decision of Netflix to cancel the show. Not many zombie shows give the vibe that Santa Clarita Diet did. The show did a great job of mixing two genres. For now, this is the end of the show. We will update you if there is even a hint of the show coming back.

Till then, check out the article on The Haunting of Hill House Season 2.

Coronavirus update: Follow this diet to reduce your risk of severe symptoms – what to eat – Express

Coronavirus has highlighted to devastating effect the perils of being ill-prepared for high-risk, low-probability events. The cost to human life has been stupefying and sobering. The world has learned the hard way why some people are at a far greater risk than others.

Researchers examining data on those that end up in hospital with COVID-19-related complications have gained valuable insights, however.

Such insights suggest that lifestyle decisions may offer some protection against the deadly pathogen.

The COVID-19 Symptom Study app, which has accumulated data on almost four million participants, has determined that being seriously overweight (obese) can significantly increase the chances of ending up in hospital with COVID-19, even for people who are otherwise young and healthy.

And other diseases linked to diet, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease, also increase the likelihood of becoming severely ill with coronavirus.

READ MORE:Type 2 diabetes: The best drink to consume to help lower blood sugar

These findings have prompted researchers to investigate the link between dietary choices and associated risks.

Scientists are now starting to suspect that some of the links between obesity and increased risk from coronavirus may be related to how our bodies process sugar (glucose), particularly because high blood glucose levels have been associated with inflammation and faulty immune responses seen in people with serious COVID-19.

Researchers behind the Symptom Study app spoke to Dr Ana Valdes, associate professor at Nottingham University, to find out more about the connection between diet, weight, inflammation and COVID-19.

"What we see with COVID is that people with obesity are at much higher risk than people with conditions like asthma. That is not what you see with things like flu, so that is a bit surprising," said Ana.

DON'T MISSType 2 diabetes: The best drink to consume to help lower blood sugar[TIPS]Diabetes type 2 warning - three foods you should avoid or risk high blood sugar symptoms[TIPS]Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms: The sign in your chest you could be lacking B12[INSIGHT]

Ana believed that post-meal blood sugar fluctuations may be vital to understanding why some people have dysfunction immune responses to the virus, resulting in severe inflammation and life-threatening symptoms.

Indeed, a study of patients in Wuhan, China, showed that patients blood sugar levels when they arrived in hospital with COVID-19 predicted how likely to die from the disease, with people with the highest blood sugar levels being most at risk.

Further data from the US also shows a link between high blood sugar levels, inflammatory responses to COVID-19, and disease progression in patients both with and without diabetes.

That is telling us a lot because it means that glucose is a key component to the immune response that the body mounts against COVID-19, added Ana.

Research suggests that high blood sugar levels can increase the number of inflammatory immune cells and suppress the anti-inflammatory cells, throwing the immune system out of balance.

In light of these findings, it could be inferred that stabilising your blood sugar levels may offer some protection, although more research is needed to confirm how effective this response will be.

Extensive research has shown that adhering to a low-carb diet can stave off high blood sugar levels.

This is because carbohydrate is broken down into glucose relatively quickly and therefore has a more pronounced effect on blood sugar levels than either fat or protein.

This makes awareness of carbohydrate a particular important factor in management of diabetes.

To avoid high-carb foods, you should follow the glycemic index (GI).

The GI index is a relative ranking of carbohydrates in foods according to how they affect blood glucose levels.

Carbohydrates with a low GI value (55 or less) are more slowly digested, absorbed and metabolised and cause a lower and slower rise in blood glucose and, therefore usually, insulin levels.

According to Mayo Clinic, green vegetables, most fruits, raw carrots, kidney beans, chickpeas, lentils and bran breakfast cereals are low GI foods.

Here are some ways you can cut down added sugar intake in your diet – The Albany Herald

Lowering the amount of added sugar in your diet not only will help you lose weight, it can also help lower your risk of many chronic diseases.

According to Healthline.com, added sugars account for up to 17% of the total calorie intake of adults and up to 14% for children, but dietary guidelines suggest that people should limit calories from added sugar to less than 10% per day. Consuming added sugar can cause weight gain, and increase your risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, cancer and depression. It could also accelerate the skin aging process and cause tooth decay.

Here are a few tips to cut down on added sugar, according to the American Heart Association:

Try cutting the usual amount of sugar you add by half and wean down from there.

Water is best, but if you want something sweet to drink, diet drinks can be a better choice than sugary drinks.

Choose fruit canned in water or natural juice. Avoid fruit canned in syrup.

Choose the products with the lowest amounts of added sugars. Dairy and fruit products will contain some natural sugars, but added sugars will be identified on the ingredients list.

Instead of adding sugar to cereal or oatmeal, try fresh fruit or dried fruit.

When baking, cut the sugar called for in your recipe by one-third to one-half.

Instead of adding sugar in recipes, use extracts (almond, vanilla, orange or lemon).

Enhance foods with spices (ginger, allspice, cinnamon or nutmeg) instead of sugar.

Switch out sugar with unsweetened applesauce in recipes, using equal amounts.

Identical Twins Discuss Their Experiment Comparing Vegan And Omni Diets – Plant Based News

Ross and Hugo Turner discussed their experiment in detail in a recent podcast (Photo: Instagram)

A pair of identical twins who trialed vegan and meat-based diets - revealing some interesting results - discussed their experiment in a recent episode of PCRM's podcast.

Ross and Hugo Turner - aka 'the adventure guinea pigs' - made headlines earlier this Summer after trialing the diets over 12 weeks between January and March this year. Ross Turner followed the meaty diet, with Hugo going plant-based throughout.

The twins consumed a very similar number of calories, both eating meals prepared by food delivery service Mindful Chef, and both did five or six sessions of endurance training each week, where they lifted the same weights, for the same number of reps.

Researchers from King's College monitored the twins, tracking metrics like muscle mass and weight, as well as cholesterol throughout the experiment.

According to Men's Health, following the experiment, Ross' cholesterol stayed the same at 6.5 (which he described as 'quite high') and Hugo's (vegan diet) went down to 4.9. When it comes to body composition, Hugo lost 1kg of fat and gained 1.2kg of muscle mass, while Ross gained 2.8kg of fat and 4kg of muscle mass.

The Turners appeared on the Physician's Committee's podcast The Exam Room to share more about the experiment, discussing it with host Chuck Carroll, revealing that they tossed a coin to decide who would try what diet.

According to Ross Turner, he was disappointed not to be the twin testing out a plant-based diet. He explained: "I was a little gutted that I didn't get the vegan [diet] because you watch all these documentaries on Netflix, in particular, The Game Changers...and so I really wanted to feel the effects of what truly going vegan is - I've never done a truly vegan diet."

Hugo Turner said his immediate thought was that he would drop a lot of weight, as he believed 'vegans can't get all the calories as they need because they are not eating meat and dairy'. He added that he thought his energy levels would be low and his motivation to work out would be low too - however this was not the case.

The twins went straight from what they described as indulgent diets over the Christmas diet period, with lots of drinking, into their new plans. Hugo described this abrupt transition as 'very difficult' for the first two weeks.

"But after those two weeks went past and suddenly your body realizes what's happening and it's adjusting, then I suddenly had a load more energy and a hell of a lot more energy all throughout the days.

"So on my usual diet, I would feel tired in the afternoon - maybe that's my snacking style - but I definitely feel tired and you get a lot more peaks and troughs. But on the vegan diet, my energy levels leveled off and, I'd have a lot more energy going to the gym. I felt a lot more motivated for that...it was really impressive the amount of energy you can get just from plants."

Scientists reveal the best way to follow the keto diet to drastically boost weight loss – Express

The keto diet plan is a low carb plan that many converts credit for their fast weight loss. The plan changes the metabolic function of the body, encouraging fat burning in particular. It seems one week is the best amount of time to follow the keto diet to maximise its affects.

Lead author Vishwa Deep Dixit of the Yale School of Medicine.

He said that the keto diet puts the body into a starvation state, which encourages the burning of fats for fuel.

This is where the keto diet gets its name, as this process creates ketones from fat to be used as fuel instead of carbohydrates.

However, by studying mice on the diet scientists found fat storage was happening simultaneously with the fat loss.

READ MORE: Keto weight loss: The best foods to burn fat on diet plan according to an expert

After one week, the mice were consuming more fat than they were burning due to the high fat nature of the diet.

Mr Dixit said: "Before such a diet can be prescribed, a large clinical trial in controlled conditions is necessary to understand the mechanism behind metabolic and immunological benefits or any potential harm to individuals who are overweight and pre-diabetic."

The experts suggest following the diet for limited periods may be most effective.

Emily Goldberg, the postdoctoral fellow in comparative medicine, added: "Our findings highlight the interplay between metabolism and the immune system, and how it coordinates maintenance of healthy tissue function."

However, some expert nutritionists have expressed misgivings over the keto diet plan.

Nutritionist Hebe Mills, founder of Hebe Mills Nutrition, told Express.co.uk: "Be mindful of the high energy content in a number of foods recommended in the diet.

Fat contains more calories than carbohydrate (which isnt a bad thing in the slightest!) so it may be worth monitoring your energy intake if the purpose of the diet is for weight loss.

She added: "Seek advice from a nutrition expert and your GP before starting the diet - the ketogenic diet eliminates carbohydrates, forcing the body to rely on fat as a source of fuel.

Considering carbohydrates provide the main fuel source to the brain, this is not a long term weight loss solution."

What are the best keto foods to eat on the plan?

Meat and fish make up large components of the diet.

Eggs are also a popular component on the diet.

High fat diary is also a common food on the plates of keto diet fans.

What snacks are in the keto diet plan to avoid sugar cravings?

Berries are a good snack on the plan to get a sweet fix.

Surprisingly, chocolate can be part of a ketogenic diet. However it is important to choose dark chocolate that contains a minimum of 70 percent cocoa solids.

While this may not be to everyones taste, cocoa powder can be used in baking to create ketogenic energy balls that can satisfy the sweet craving.

Weight loss: Woman lost two stone in four months of lockdown with this slimming plan – Express

Though the stress of the pandemic, difficult work situations and homeschooling may have affected some slimmers efforts, others have thrived on being able to focus on their wellbeing as they stayed at home.

One woman has revealed how despite the lockdown throwing her routine out of the window, she managed to stick to her diet plan.

Michelle, a 34-year-old who started the WW (Weight Watchers reimagined) plan at the start of March, has successfully dropped two stone since beginning the diet.

Its taken just four months for her to shed the weight - but its not been an easy ride.

READ MORE:Alison Hammond weight loss: Diet plan star used after hitting 20st

Michelle attended her first meeting with her mum and her three-year-old in tow.

I had weighed myself at home so I wouldnt be as shocked by what the scales said but it didn't matter, there was no judgement, only positivity - and from then on I was not planning to see that number again, said Michelle.

I wanted to make a change.

Michelles starting weight was 15 stone 9 pounds, and she lost two pounds in her first week as the diet was going well.

But then lockdown struck - and she was told she had to shield for twelve weeks due to her condition.

Everything felt so out of my control, I had lost my routine and had been thrown into a new way of life, Michelle said.

However this time I took some control back. I continued with my journey even though I couldnt leave the house.

Adele [Michelles coach] had spoken about how we are going into a chrysalis and we can emerge like butterflies. That became my aim. I wanted to be that butterfly, revealed Michelle.

Michelle kept up the diet by tracking everything she was eating - even if her husband was cooking - as well as attending a workshop on Zoom every week.

The dieter made new healthy habits, including drinking two bottles of water a day and found the competitive nature of the challenge helped her to stick to her goals.

Fitness was also the key to her impressive weight loss, including a daily online session of pilates once the kids were in bed and a daily walk.

Michelle has now shrunk down to 13 stone 9 pounds, losing exactly two stone in four months since the start of lockdown.

The biggest thing I have learnt is that even though I can't fully control my illness or what's happening in the outside world and although my body with the arthritis may need to take it a bit slower at times, I can still get there if I try and don't give up, admitted Michelle.

Though Michelle hasnt yet reached her goal, she already feels better at her new weight.

I am feeling lots more confident and have started noticing the changes in how I look, but WW hasnt only helped with the numbers on the scales and the size of my clothes - it has really made such an impact on my mental health with the weekly check ins, and changing my attitude towards being healthy.

I don't need those huge numbers on the scales I have craved in the past; I just need to keep trying to make healthy changes and know that there are amazing people such as my coach, the others in the workshop and my family and friends to help me achieve whatever I want to.
