Certain carbohydrates are digested and absorbed at different rates, and GI is the ranking of how quickly each carbohydrate-based food or drink impacts the blood glucose levels.

The GI index runs from 0 to 100 and usually uses pure glucose, which has a GI of around 100, as the reference.

Slowly absorbed carbohydrates have a low GI rating and foods included in this are fruits and vegetables, unsweetened milk, nuts, pulses, and some wholegrain cereals and bread.

In a study with the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, a low-glycaemic index diet was investigated in how it could help with diabetes.

The study noted: We performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials to determine whether low-GI diets, compared with conventional or high-GI diets, improved overall glycaemic control in individuals with diabetes.

The study concluded that choosing low-GI foods in place of conventional or high-GI foods has a small but clinically useful effect on medium-term glycaemic control in patients with diabetes.

The incremental benefit is similar to that offered by pharmacological agents that also target postprandial hyperglycaemia.

In another study with the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, glycaemic index in the diet of European outpatients with diabetes was analysed.

The study said: The relation of the GI to serum cholesterol (total, LDL, and HDL), and fasting triacylglycerol was analysed in 2810 people with type 1 diabetes.

It concluded that the study in European patients with type 1 diabetes showed that a lower dietary GI is related to lower Hb A(1c) concentrations, independently of fibre intake.

The consumption of bread and pasta had the biggest effect on the overall dietary GI of European outpatients.

When it comes to foods which have a low GI rating and help keep blood sugar low, avocados are one of the best.

Medical News Today said: Polyunsaturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids are important components of a healthy blood sugar eating plan and avocados could help improve insulin sensitivity.

Other foods include tuna and fish, sour cherries, leafy green vegetables, blueberries, almonds, whole grains and eggs.

Foods with a high GI and best avoided if living with type 2 diabetes include sugar and sugary foods, white bread, white rice and potatoes.

Plant-based diets can promote healthy aging, according to a new editorial published in a nutritional journal.

The article, titled Plant-Based Diets for Healthy Aging, appears in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

It was compiled by researchers from the pro-plant-based Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (which funded the paper), who reviewed clinical trials and epidemiological studies related to aging.

They discovered that 'while aging increases the risk for noncommunicable chronic diseases, healthful diets can help', with the editorial showing that 'plant-based diets can reduce the risk of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cancer, and heart disease by almost 50 percent and could cut cardiometabolic-related deaths in the United States by half'.

Researchers cited a number of studies showing that healthy, plant-based diets can slash the risk of developing metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes by about 50 percent, and may cut the risk of developing Alzheimers disease by more than 50 percent.

In addition, the diet could reduce the risk of coronary heart disease events by an estimated 40 percent and reduce the risk of cerebral vascular disease events by 29 percent.

The authors write: "Modulating lifestyle risk factors and adopting a healthful diet are powerful tools that may delay the aging process, decrease age-associated co-morbidities and mortality, and increase life expectancy."

The global population of adults 60 years old or older is expected to double from 841 million to 2 billion by 2050, presenting clear challenges for our health care system, says study author Hana Kahleova, MD, PhD, director of clinical research for the Physicians Committee.

Adele weight loss: Experts behind Adeles diet say pizza and champagne is on the menu – Express

Singer-songwriter Adele, 32, is best known for her powerful voice and hit songs such as Someone Like You and Rumour Has It. But in recent weeks the star has caught her fans' attention for another reason - her dramatic weight loss. The talented singer is said to have lost a whopping seven stone with a plan called the Sirtfood Diet.

Adele first revealed her slimmer frame at Christmas in a brief appearance on Instagram, but had gone quiet on social media in 2020 - until her birthday.

The star wowed her fans on her 32nd birthday with a snap of her in a tight little black dress, showing off her trim waistline and tanned legs.

Rumours have been circling ever since over how the singer dropped the pounds, with sources saying its all down to the Sirtfood Diet - a plan which Pippa Middleton is also said to have followed before her wedding.

The plan was devised by two celebrity nutritionists from the UK, and is centred around eating foods that are thought to have an effect on your metabolism.

Sirtfoods are the key to the diet, as they contain sirtuins, which are proteins that can affect metabolism and inflammation.

The plan, which has been confirmed by the founders as a more advanced version of the healthy Mediterranean diet, involves different phases, which start out in a very restrictive manner.

People on the plan are instructed to start phase one with a restricted calorie intake of just 1,000 calories in the first three days, replacing some meals with a specific green juice recipe.

It then ramps up to 1,500 calories for the remainder of week one, allowing dieters to eat more meals.

The next two weeks is then considered a maintenance phase, with three balanced meals per day which incorporate sirtfoods plus one of the juices, in order to boost metabolism and keep dropping the weight.

However, while it may sound like a very strict diet plan, the founders have recently taken to social media to dispel a few myths about the diet.

Aidan Goggins and Glen Matten, the experts behind The Sirtfood Diet book, have over 34,000 followers on their Instagram account, where they share updates and inspiration about the plan.

In some of their latest posts, theyve talked about the ethos behind it - and encouraged fans of the diet to eat pizza and even drink champagne.

Sharing a photo of a pizza that they had been tagged in by one of the diets many fans, the founders wrote: For us, the Sirtfood Diet is so much more than about losing weight.

Centred around the healthiest and arguably some of the most delicious plant foods on the planet, we conceived this as a food lovers diet.

A celebration of the best foods nature has to offer. Not a lonely diet of restriction and forbidden foods but a way of eating that we can truly enjoy with our family and friends.

The pizza had a thin buckwheat base, and was topped with plenty of rocket - an approved sirtfood - and the recipe is in the original book.

But while the pizza might be a healthier version of the nations go-to Italian dish, the founders also recommended another treat to their followers.

Celebrating Independence Day, they shared a video explaining some new research on champagne.

The video revealed that scientists at Reading University have proven that sparkling wine has a positive effect on your health, adding that champagne is good for your brain.

According to the founders, its all down to the polyphenols in the red grape pinot noir.

As good a reason as any to celebrate that champagne is made from the same sirtuin activating grapes as red wine and is thus a bona fide brain food, they wrote.

Obesity, smoking, and drinking lots of alcohol, all contribute to your cholesterol levels.

Medication can help to keep your cholesterol levels in check, but it's also important to stick to a healthy diet, and to do regular exercise.

Everyone should aim to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day, as well as 150 minutes of exercise every week.

The most common heart attack signs include severe chest pain and having a sudden feeling of anxiety.

Some patients have also reported persistent dizziness, swollen ankles, or an irregular heartbeat.

A fever, throat pain, or a pain spreading down your arm, could also be caused by a heart attack.

It looks like Drew Barrymores passion project has come to a standstill. Netflix has confirmed that the show will not be returning for a new season. With season 3, ending on a major cliffhanger, it looks like some questions are better left unanswered.

With Netflix confirming a no-return, it is now almost no-brainer. Netflix did not give a possible reason as to why they pulled the plug on the show. The show made its debut in 2017. It was renewed for a second season in 2018 and was picked up for a third season in 2019. There is a total of 20 episodes with a run time of almost 30 minutes.

Victor Fresco is the creator of the show. Leila Cohan-Miccio, Nancy Juvonen and Jimmy Simmons are the producers.

Season 3 had Sheila biting Joel to save his life. What we are unsure about is, is Joel now undead? Or is he dead? Joel has long questioned whether he would like to be immortal, so its interesting to see how he would live if its the former. Will their marriage be different now? It looks like we will not knowing the answers.

Santa Clarita Diet is a comedy with horror at its core. It is about a realtor couple, Sheila and Joel Hammond and how things change when Sheila becomes undead after eating infected clams. Being undead means one is technically alive but their heart has stopped beating. They feel no pain and can only be killed by destroying their brains. We later see how the Hammonds find their normalcy in this absolute insanity. We subsequently see Sheila turning others around her undead.

With the transformation, we see a new side of Sheila: she is bolder and unapologetic. As a newbie, she is unable to control her urges, but as the show progresses, we see a mature side. Her primal instincts and urges often get out of control. In the beginning of her metamorphosis, it is difficult to be around her. But her family remains with her through thick and thin.

Joel covers up the tracks that Sheila leaves, as she commits her murder spree. He loves his wife and supports her, no matter how bizarre the circumstance. Their marriage is solid and they bring out the best in each other.

Horror comedies are rare and Santa Clarita Diet did a great job with its clever plot lines, gags and characters. The show found a loyal fan base, who are clearly disappointed with the cancellation of the show. We are hoping that the show finds another platform and gets to continue its storyline. Hope we get to see answers and meet the crazy Hammonds one day.

"For those wanting to follow a Mediterranean diet, the Government's healthy eating advice set out in its 'Eatwell Guide' is similar and shows how much you should eat of each food group to have a healthy balanced diet.

"This includes eating plenty of starchy foods, such as bread and pasta, plenty of fruit and vegetables, eating some fish, less meat, and choosing products made from vegetable and plant oils, such as olive oil."

Low-Carb Diet Is Effective For People With High Cholesterol – Experts Reveal – NDTV Food

Foods like red meat, ice cream, full-fat dairy etc have always been associated with increase in bad cholesterol (LDL) in our body, due to their saturated fat content. Hence, people with high cholesterol level have always been advised to reduce the consumption of such kind of foods to minimise further heart-related risks. For the uninitiated, high cholesterol disorder can be due to two reasons - genetic or bad lifestyle choices; and the one passed down through families is termed as familial hypercholesterolemia.

A new study says, it is not the low-saturated fat diet that is effective for people diagnosed with familial hypercholesterolemia, rather they should eliminate carbs from their diet to reduce heart-related risks. Published in the journal BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine, the researchers announced that they found no such evidence to support the claims that people suffering from familial hypercholesterolemia should reduce consumption of saturated fats.

As per the study, an international team of experts on heart disease and diet, including five cardiologists, evaluated the dietary guidelines for people with familial hypercholesterolemia. After the review, the experts stated that they found no justification behind the recommendation of the low saturated fat diet.

"For the past 80 years, people with familial hypercholesterolemia have been told to lower their cholesterol with a low saturated fat diet," said lead author David Diamond, professor and heart disease researcher at the University of South Florida.

"Our study showed that a more 'heart healthy' diet is one low in sugar, not saturated fat," he added.

It is also said that this research echoed the findings of another study that was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. That study provided strong evidence that food that raises blood sugar, such as bread, potatoes and sweets, should be minimised, rather than tropical oils and animal-base
