Heart attack: The best diet to follow to avoid the deadly condition – what foods to eat – Express

A heart attack can be fatal and, even if it's not, it can take months to recover from, and may put you at risk of another one. Be mindful of what you eat to reduce your chances of an attack.

The NHS confirms that the leading cause of a heart attack is cardiovascular disease, specifically coronary heart disease (CHD).

An unhealthy diet contributes to fatty deposits of cholesterol clogging the arteries.

And, should cholesterol block the arteries supplying blood, nutrients and oxygen, to the heart, it can trigger a heart attack.

Harvard Medical School posed the question: "Are there associations of different healthy eating patterns with long-term risk of cardiovascular disease?"

The research team went on to investigate individual eating habits, using data from the Nurses Health Study, Nurses Health Study II, and Health Professionals Follow-up Study.

Accumulative data was collected on 165,794 women and 43,339 men, which ranged from 1984 to 2017.

For this study, the researchers focused on dietary scores of four healthy eating patterns recommended by experts; these were:

Despite different scoring methods, the healthy diets all focused on a higher intake of whole grains, vegetables, fruit, legumes and nuts.

Looking through questionnaires, the participants had been asked to document their dietary habits every two to four years.

The lengthy analysis found that a greater adherence to any of the healthy eating scores that focused on nutritious foods benefitted from a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

Those who mostly adhered to healthy diets had up to a 21 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease compared to the group that didn't adhere to healthy eating habits.

Frank Hu, chair of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, said: "There is no one-size-fits-all diet that is best for everyone."

However, "one can combine foods in a variety of flexible ways to achieve healthy eating patterns", Hu added.

Published in the JAMA international Medicine journal, Hu commented: "This data provides further evidence to support current dietary guidelines.

"Following healthy eating patterns confers long-term health benefits on cardiovascular disease prevention."

Whole grains

The American Heart Association explains that "whole grain contains the entire grain the bran, germ and endosperm".

Whole grains are an excellent source of dietary fibre, which can help improve blood cholesterol thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and a heart attack.

Check nutritional labels when in the supermarket to look out for "whole grain" products.

Common whole grain foods include: oatmeal, brown rice, wild rice, whole wheat, graham flour, whole grain corn and whole grain barley.

Fruits and vegetables

The Harvard School of Public Health addresses that a variety of fruit and vegetables is just as important as quantity.

It's best to mix and match colours everyday, ranging from dark, leafy greens to bright red fruits and yellow vegetables.

The organisation attested: "There is compelling evidence that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can lower the risk of heart disease."

Include legumes, such as black beans, lentils and pinto, into your heart healthy diet, alongside nuts, such as almonds.

He goes to the gym for three days and spends between two-three hours, focusing on multiple muscle groups a day and at least a 10-minute cardio session.

On the rest of the days, he tries to work out in the open. A cardio session on a race track or sneaking a core workout in the grass is what he is fond of.

It is the season of cold and flu. But when it comes to keeping these illnesses at bay or getting a cure, your diet plays an important role. Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar recently shared nani ke nushkhe or some home remedies you can rely on to alleviate cough, cold and flu.

Local ingredients, seasonal produce, spices and ghee have been the backbone of our food traditions, especially when one is under the weather or recovering from a flu, Diwekar wrote on Instagram.

Heres what she suggested:

* Ghee, dry ginger powder, turmeric and jaggery mixed in small amounts and rolled into small balls. This is the first thing you should eat in the morning and the last thing before bedtime. Studies have shown that curcumin in turmeric has anti-microbial properties, and reduces symptoms of cold and flu. Jaggery, on the other hand, boosts immunity and helps control body temperature while ginger has several medicinal properties and is known to soothe cough and ward off feelings of nausea which may accompany cold or flu.

* For breakfast, have ragi porridge or dosa. Ragi is high in dietary fibre and antioxidants. It is a rich source of iron and calcium.

* Mix cashew and jaggery and have it as a mid-morning snack. Cashew is rich in minerals and Vitamin C and helps boost immunity. It has no cholesterol and keeps the mind calm.

* For lunch, have moong dal and rice with ghee every day.

* For evening snack, have jaggery, poha and milk. You can also have egg with bread toast. Poha is known to be a good probiotic. Probiotics are helpful in preventing upper respiratory tract infections although evidence is inconsistent, according to a study in Canadian Medical Association Journal.

* Dal khichdi or fish and rice for dinner. You can also try kulith or horsegram pithla with rice and ghee.

Stomach bloating – the 55p herb to protect against trapped wind pain – Express

Bloating can make the stomach feel swollen, hard, and its generally quite uncomfortable.

Your bloating pain may be caused by eating certain gassy foods, or by eating too fast or too much.

But, one of the best and easiest ways to limit your risk of bloating is to eat more coriander, it's been revealed.

The herb improves digestion, which limits the risk of trapped wind.

[Coriander] has been used throughout the world for thousands of years to settle nauseous tummies, prevent gas and bloating, relieve indigestion and heartburn, and ease stomach cramps," said Dr Axe.

It aids in efficient digestion, by helping to produce digestive enzymes that aid in the breakdown of foods.

Hot curry dishes, green chilli, and spicy Thai noodle dishes all are better tolerated by many people with the simple addition of just a touch of fresh chopped [coriander]. This cooling effect can help prevent heartburn after spicy meals.

If gas or bloating is a problem, try adding chopped [coriander] as a garnish for legume dishes, and to salads.

Meanwhile, you could be raising your chances of bloating pain by eating honey.

Honey contains a specific type of sugar that may be causing your trapped wind.

Indigestible sugars, which are known as FODMAPs, are a common culprit for bloating.

They tend to sit in the gut for long periods of time, and provide food for bacteria, which subsequently causes trapped wind.

Honey is rich in FODMAPs, which may be instigating your bloating pain.

Stomach bloating may also be caused by constipation, trapped wind, irritable bowel syndrome, or even by swallowing too much air.

You could swallow air by drinking through a straw, or by talking with your mouth full of food.

Speak to a doctor if your bloating symptoms dont go away, said the NHS. It could be caused by something more serious, including ovarian or bowel cancer.

While stomach pain is unlikely to be caused by a type of cancer, it's always worth getting it checked by a medical professional.

The UK’s fittest man eats 4,000 calories a day. Here’s what his diet looks like. – Insider – INSIDER

If you want to get fit, training is only part of the equation.

What you eat to fuel your body is just as important as what you do in the gym, and this is something Zack George knows better than anyone.

Having beaten all other British athletes at the 2020 CrossFit Open, George is currently the fittest man in the UK.

But unlike many athletes, he wasn't always into sport and fitness.

In fact, George, who grew up in Leicestershire, UK, said he was "massively overweight" as a child, eating fast food after school every day and regularly consuming whole bags of candy.

Now 29, the gym owner and athlete has been on quite the fitness journey since then, and his diet is a far cry from that of his childhood.

George broke down his diet to Insider, explaining exactly what and how much he eats to remain at the top of his game.

Many people are under the impression that fitness is about starving yourself, but this couldn't be further from the truth, as George's daily diet shows.

The athlete consumes 4,000 calories a day, but at six foot tall and around 100 kg (220 lbs), this is what his body needs.

"It's a lot, but it's not as much as people think because of my size and the fact that I'm training for three to four hours a day," George said.

Despite how active he is, George has to watch his weight because being too heavy hinders his performance.

"I put on weight so easily," he said. "It's a good weight, it's muscle mass, but still, if I weigh 102 kg (225 lbs), it doesn't matter if it's muscle, it's too heavy.

"I think what really contributed to me winning the Open was that I went into it weighing 95 kg (209 lbs). It just makes a massive difference being able to move your body quicker and being lighter in general."

Even though 4,000 calories may seem a lot to the average person (guidelines are 2,000 for women and 2,500 for men), George points out that there are athletes who may weigh 20kg less than him but eat more, because they're not as heavy.

"I really have to try to control my weight," George said.

This means that when preparing for a competition, he has to be very disciplined with his diet.

"During off-season, I just eat relatively well and I'll have one or two cheat meals a week," he said.

"But when I'm getting close to a serious competition, I'd be on a very strict diet. I wouldn't have any cheat meals or anything for about three months."

George doesn't track his macros (where you aim to hit specific targets for protein, carbs, and fat), but that's because he knows roughly what's in everything he eats.

"I'm not someone who does it every day because I'm so used to eating certain things and getting what my body needs," he said.

"I pretty much eat the same every day so I don't have to worry about tracking every single day. My diet is very, very similar from Monday to Friday."

George said he's quite happy eating the same foods during the week, safe in the knowledge that his meals will be fueling his body in the right way.

Come the weekend, during off-season anyway, George relaxes and mixes things up a bit.

"On the weekends I can be a bit more experimental and I enjoy it a little more," he said.

"But in the week I just see food as fuel really, just for training, and then I really enjoy my food at the weekend."

Although he still has the occasional pizza takeaway, George said he hasn't had fast food like McDonald's or KFC for 10 years.

"I don't really ever fancy it any more, it's odd," he said.

"On my cheat meals, I normally have sweets and chocolate now, I don't tend to have fast food."

Dinners vary most in George's day to day diet.

"My girlfriend's a good cook so she'll cook a variety of things, but it's always based around the protein source, which is usually white meat or fish like sea bass, tuna, or chicken," he said.

"Occasionally we have red meat like lamb."

And that protein is usually served alongside sweet potatoes, white potatoes, or rice, and vegetables like carrots, kale, or spinach.

If George is still hungry in the evening, he makes himself protein pancakes, simply using eggs, banana, and protein powder.

"This shows that some people might be more vulnerable to late eating than others. If the metabolic effects we observed with a single meal keep occurring chronically, then late eating could lead to consequences such as diabetes or obesity."
