Want To Live 10 Years Longer? Add These 3 Foods to Your Diet, New Study Says – The Healthy

Longevity is a popular topic, thanks in part to the Blue Zones research on the best ways to live longer. Its an idea so fascinating, and so inspiring, partly because theres a growing awareness in our culture that extending your lifespan can be achieved through some of the simplest, and most pleasurable, things you do.

One of those is eating. A new study analyzed data on diets in seven countries after a team of doctors predicted that theyd observe an increase in life expectancy among populations that had transitioned from typical national dietary patterns to longevity-optimizing dietary changes, more feasible dietary modifications, and optimized vegan dietary changes.

Published in the April 29, 2024, issue of the peer-reviewed American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the study was led by public health and medical researchers who drew upon data from the Global Burden of Diseases and Injuries study, which is an ongoing initiative that monitors dietary habits and health metrics across multiple nations. The research combined statistics from China, France, Germany, Iran, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Adjusting for height, weight, and physical activity level, the researchers identified some broad-sweeping trends:

The United States emerged with the greatest opportunity to increase longevity, due to Americans widespread consumption of foods like processed meat and added sugars, combined with low intake of longevity-promoting foods like whole grains, nuts, legumes, and fish. To our collective credit, Americans ate a decent amount of vegetables and consumed enough fruit, but this didnt fully offset the bad choices in other parts of the American diet.

The study also suggested that men stand to benefit from dietary modifications more than women, likely because across countries it was observed women already follow healthier diets.

Anti-Inflammatory Diet Linked to Brain Health Benefits – EatingWell

Cognitive decline, also known as cognitive impairment, is a common occurrence in older adults. It ranges from mild cognitive impairment to life-altering forms of dementia, including Alzheimers disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

While many factors influence age-related cognitive impairment, the CDC estimates the prevalence at 11.7% in adults age 65 and older, and 10.8% among adults ages 45 to 64.

Some signs of cognitive decline include an inability to recall the words youre looking for, a reduced ability to focus, and a lack of enjoyment in activities you used to enjoy.

While certain things, like genetics, age and race, cannot be changed, the CDC cites evidence that supports how changing lifestyle factors that influence brain health may prevent or delay up to 40% of dementia cases. Several of these lifestyle factors are affected by nutrition, including blood pressure, weight and blood sugar levels.

A new study released on April 28, 2024, adds to the evidence suggesting that what we eat can affect cognitive impairment.

Researchers set out to determine whether two different eating patterns were associated with a reduction in cognitive impairment: an anti-inflammatory diet and a protein-rich diet. They drew their information from a survey that had been conducted in 2018. A total of 8,692 adults, age 60 or older, 55% female, were included in the sample.

Parameters were developed that outlined what researchers considered high-protein and anti-inflammatory eating patterns based on how often certain foods were consumed. Protein-rich foods included meats, fish, eggs, dairy and beans (legumes). Anti-inflammatory foods included fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and tea.

Each participant was also interviewed at home using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), which tests memory and mental acuity. Scores ranged from 0 to 30, with higher scores correlating with higher levels of cognitive function.

After controlling for confounding variablesage, sex, BMI, smoking status, etc.researchers found that the chances of cognitive decline decreased as the dietary scores for both an anti-inflammatory diet and a protein-rich diet increased. Specifically, an anti-inflammatory diet was associated with a 21% reduction in cognitive impairment and a protein-rich diet was associated with a 9% reduction.

Higher markers of inflammation in the body have been linked with greater rates of cognitive decline and depression. And while we might not be able to eliminate cognitive impairment, our lifestyle habits can go a long way toward preventing it.

For example, weve covered information on the MIND Diet, a fusion of the Mediterranean and DASH diets, which has been linked with better brain health. All of these diets include foods that the researchers considered anti-inflammatory and protein-rich.

Besides diet, other lifestyle habits also play a role in brain health. These include consistently engaging in physical activity, meditation and deep breathingwhich reduces stress and increases the amount of oxygen going to the braingetting plenty of quality sleep and connecting with friends and family, as loneliness has been associated with a higher risk of cognitive decline.

This study suggests that protein-rich and anti-inflammatory diets are associated with a lower risk of cognitive decline. In addition to the foods included in this study, healthy fats, whole grains, herbs and spices have also been linked with reduced inflammation. Can the MIND Diet Prevent Cognitive Decline and Dementia? – American Society for Nutrition

Brain function gradually declines with age, which, in turn, can lead to dementia, including Alzheimers disease, the most common form of dementia, representing 60-70% of dementia cases globally. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the number of individuals with dementia worldwide is 55 million. This number is expected to reach some 78 million by 2030 and 139 million by 2050. Moreover, the global financial burden of dementia is expected to rise to $2.8 trillion by 2030.

It is not possible to stop the brain from aging. Moreover, despite pharmaceutical advances in delaying the onset and slowing the progression of dementia, there is no known cure. As a result, there is increasing interest in the relationship between modifiable lifestyle factors and optimal brain aging. Nutrition, in particular, is considered a key modifiable lifestyle factor that may play a pivotal role in preventing and managing dementia.

Recently, nutrition researchers have been shifting away from studying the relationship between individual nutrients or foods and brain aging towards studying the relationship between overall dietary patterns and brain aging. Studying dietary patterns is thought to be a more effective strategy as it can capture the synergistic benefits of individual nutrients and foods.

The Mediterranean-Dietary Approaches to Systolic Hypertension Diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay, also know as the MIND diet, was designed to preserve good brain function as we age. As the name suggests, the MIND diet is a hybrid of the Mediterranean diet and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, emphasizing the consumption of food groups with neuroprotective properties, including berries and leafy green vegetables.

The question is does the MIND diet work? In response, the authors of The MIND Diet for the Ageing Brain: A Systematic Review, published in Advances in Nutrition, conducted a systematic scientific review of the evidence. To conduct their research, the authors analyzed the results of 40 studies. Only two of these studies were randomized controlled trials, often considered the gold standard for research studies, in which researchers randomly assign participants into an experimental group and a control group. The other 38 studies were observational studies, in which researchers observed individuals without manipulation or intervention.

Specifically, the authors sought to determine the relationship between the MIND diet and cognitive functioning, cognitive decline, and dementia risk. Moreover, the authors also examined how the MIND diet affected the incidence of age-related neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinsons disease.

According the authors findings, the majority of studies indicated that the MIND diet reduces the risk of all-cause dementia and Alzheimers disease. The authors cautioned that our findings, however, do not conclusively prove the benefits of the MIND diet for brain ageing. In particular, the only randomized controlled trial with good quality did not show protective effects.

Addressing the mixed results of their systematic review, the authors noted that many of the cohorts demonstrating protective associations were of North American origin, raising the question of whether the most favorable diet for healthy brain aging is population dependent. The authors further noted that some of the studies originating outside North America showing beneficial associations had adapted the MIND diet to their local eating habits. As a result, further research is required to discover if traditional eating habits with components of the MIND diet are more protective of brain aging than the original MIND diet.

New York outlaws sales of diet pills and muscle-mass builders to kids – Fortune

Its now illegal to sellweight-lossand muscle-building supplements to minors in New York, under a first-in-the-nation law that went into effect this week.

Experts say loose federal regulation of dietary supplements has resulted in these products sometimes including unapproved ingredients, like steroids and heavy metals, putting kids at risk. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration oversees the market, but it doesnt test products before theyre sold.

The law that we crafted reflects the lack of regulation from the FDA and the lack of regulation in the industry, said Jensen Jose, a regulatory counsel member with the Center for Science in the Public Interest who worked on the legislation.

State lawmakers in Massachusetts are considering a similar measure. Californias state house previously passed a ban on selling weight-loss supplements to minors that was vetoed by the governor, but lawmakers there are considering a new version. A Colorado law ending thesale of diet pills to minorsgoes into effect in July.

New Yorks law allows the state to fine businesses who sell kids diet pills or supplements that promote themselves as helping build muscle or burn fat. Protein supplements and shakes are exempt, unless they contain another weight-loss or muscle-building ingredient.

While specific products arent banned, the law states judges enforcing the measure could consider the inclusion of ingredients including creatine, green tea extract and raspberry ketone.

The bills creators point to studies that have found some supplements secretly tainted with anabolic steroids and banned stimulants. That makes the products especially harmful for children, who are still growing, said Theresa Gentile, a registered nutritionist and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

At Natural Body Astoria, a vitamin and supplement store in Queens, worker Nick Kubler said the company was already self-policing before the law came in this week.

Weve never really sold anything like that to children anyway, but we are definitely more aware now, Kubler said.

Dhriti Rathod, a 17-year-old model and student at the New York Institute of Technology, said shes in favor of the restrictions.

People my age, they dont look into this kind of stuff, they do it based on what they see online, Rathod said. They see people have been using it, so they go right into it and start using it, but they dont know the dangers.

But the new regulation has been met with pushback from the industry at large, with some retailers saying the definition of what can and cant be sold to kids is unclear.

The actual definition of what is illegal to sell to a minor is incredibly vague, said Lee Wright, chief executive officer for nationwide chain The Vitamin Shoppe.

He says the company spent an inordinate amount of time to figure out how to implement the new rules. Its computer systems now show a pop-up screen when the kind of products targeted by the law are being sold.

The law was also challenged by at least two lawsuits from industry groups that argued it is too vague and that regulation is the FDAs responsibility.

In one of those suits, a Manhattan federal judge last Friday denied a motion by the Council for Responsible Nutrition to stop the law from taking effect, finding it was uncompromisingly clear and saying the organizations fears of potential fines and loss of income pale in comparison to the states goal of protecting youth from unfettered access to dietary supplements.

Spokespeople for the FDA did not respond to email messages requesting comment.

State Sen. Shelley Mayer, a Democrat who sponsored the legislation, said implementation shouldnt be that hard for businesses, since some of them already sort their supplements in categories for weight loss or muscle building.

Its unclear how large online retailers like Amazon will ensure they arent shipping the supplements to minors in the Empire State. The company did not respond to a request for comment. Certain products on The Vitamin Shoppes online store note that buyers in New York will need to present an ID on delivery.

Maxim Abramciuc, an 18-year-old who has used muscle-building supplements in the past, said while he understands the restriction, he doesnt fully agree with it.

They should be able to buy some of these products, he said while browsing through a vitamin and supplement shop in Albany. If it has little side effects, why shouldnt children take it?

The Mary Hennigan diet: How to eat lunch like an Arkansas Times city reporter – Arkansas Times

When Mary Hennigan started as a city reporter in 2022 for the Arkansas Times, she was fresh out of grad school and her young, untrained palate was still maturing. She seemed eager to experience new cuisines outside of her comfort zone, but she was nervous.

In her two years in the newsroom shes flourished as a reporter and become a more curious eater. Shes now wise to the fact that every restaurant she yearns for on a Monday is likely closed; shes endured the crushing experience of having to resort to cheap, sad and often adorable desk meals to accommodate the budget of a working journalist; shes always down to toss you a snack from her desk stash; shes developed some creative modifications at restaurants around town; and if theres an option to add an egg, shell do it every time.

Today is her last day at the Arkansas Times. Shes taken a gig as a reporter for the excellent Arkansas Advocate, so shell be consuming most of her lunch meals down the street. But hopefully shell still send us food selfies of her pitiful desk meals (girl dinner!) and find time to meet us at La Hacienda for cheese dip (she never skips out on cheese dip). There was a week after Thanksgiving when Hennigan was heading home for lunch to eat air fryer sweet potato fries almost daily. But these werent just any sweet potato fries.

One of Hennigans finest Eat Arkansas moments was discovering an off-menu item that inspired her to write a seven-word food jingle. One night at Three Fold last summer, Hennigan opted for the restaurants noodle soup, and her partner chose the dumpling soup. While they were slurping, Hennigan found herself longing for the broth in her partners bowl.

My meal was great, but the comforting noodles with the saltier dumpling broth base was what I craved, she wrote.

A sesame butter is added to the noodle soup, which makes it similar to a miso soup texture. Its softer. The dumpling soup broth has a saltier soy base, she said.

In the days leading up to her next Three Fold visit, she feared that ordering noodle soup in the dumpling soup broth with no cilantro might give her a reputation for being fussy with her orders. To steady herself, she started singing the words noodle soup in the dumpling soup soup around the office.

After a few modifications (and almost surely developing a reputation as the customer with the weird soup order), she sent us a Slack message explaining that shed finally found the words to nail down what she likes:

I perfected my noodle soup in the dumpling soup soup order. Here it is: Noodle soup. No cilantro, shredded chicken, add an egg. No sesame oil. Medium [spice level].

We have to hand it to her, though. Its delicious.

A High Seafood Diet Might Put You at a Higher Risk of Exposure to ‘Forever Chemicals’ – Health.com

Seafood lovers, beware: A new study suggests that regularly eating certain marine species may increase the risk of exposure to perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly referred to as forever chemicals.

For the study published April 12 in the journal Exposure and Health, researchers examined the seafood consumption habits of more than 1,800 Portsmouth, New Hampshire residents, as well as the PFAS levels in a variety of seafood items found at a market there. They discovered the presence of PFAS in a range of products, with shrimp and lobster having the highest concentrations.

PFAS are manufactured chemicals used in everything from clothing to electrical wiring insulation. They dont fully break down and therefore end up in the air and bodies of water, contaminating our food and beverages. Scientists have linked the chemicals with several human health effects, including growth and development disruptions, liver injury, and an increased risk of certain cancers.

We hope that this brings attention to the fact that seafood consumption could be an important route of PFAS exposure for high seafood consumers, Celia Y. Chen, PhD, study coauthor and research professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Dartmouth College, told Health. We do hope that this study will spur others to look more closely at this issue in their states and regions.

Previous research has shown dangerous levels of PFAS in freshwater fish, but Megan Romano, PhD, study coauthor and associate professor of epidemiology at Dartmouths Geisel School of Medicine, told Health that her team was surprised to discover that researchers hadnt investigated PFAS in marine seafood as widely.

This struck us as odd because most of the fish and shellfish that people eat tend to come from the sea rather than freshwater, she said. We recognized that in order to understand how much PFAS people may be exposed to when eating marine seafood, we needed to ask three key questions: How much seafood do people eat? What kinds of seafood do people eat? How much PFAS is present in the types of seafood that people eat?

To answer the questions, the team surveyed the seafood consumption habits of 1,829 Portsmouth adults and children aged two to 11. They also measured levels of 26 types of PFAS found in fresh cod, haddock, lobster, salmon, scallops, shrimp, and tuna. The seafood originated in various regions and ended up in a Portsmouth market.

Researchers found that Portsmouth residents tended to be high consumers of seafood. Of the adults surveyed, 95% reported eating seafood within the last year.

Men in the state reported eating a little over an ounce of seafood daily, while women consumed just below an ounce. These amounts are 1.5 times the national average for both men and women, per the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Children consumed around 0.2 ounces, the highest end of the national range.

Shrimp, haddock, salmon, and canned tuna were the most commonly consumed items.

The scientists also discovered that basket shrimp and lobster had the highest average PFAS concentrationsas high as 1.74 and 3.30 nanograms per gram of flesh, respectively. Concentrations in other products analyzed generally measured less than one nanogram per gram.

Our findings suggest that for very frequent seafood consumers, there may be a risk of excessive PFAS exposure from certain seafood items with shrimp and lobster, Romano said. This study suggests that we should be gathering additional data to establish fish consumption advice more broadly.

The research builds on other studies that have found high PFAS levels in certain seafood species, Tracey Woodruff, PhD, MPH, director of the Program on Reproductive Health and the Environment at the University of California, San Francisco, told Health. Those studies have examined seafood from coastal waters in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere, according to Romano.

The study authors noted, however, that there is still much to learn about the connection between PFAS and seafood, including the interplay of factors that lead to the accumulation of PFAS in the tissues of aquatic animals. Romano said its currently believed that an animals levels depend on how much PFAS is in the water and sediment where it lives, how it feeds, where it lives in the water column, and whether or not it eats smaller marine life.

Experts stress that you dont have to nix seafood altogether to avoid unsafe PFAS exposure. Instead, simply be mindful when choosing which ones to eat.

Seafood is an excellent source of lean protein and omega fatty acids, but it may also contain PFAS or mercury, so it is important to be a conscientious consumer, Romano said. This is especially important for vulnerable populations, such as pregnant people and young children.

Opt for species that researchers found to contain lower amounts of PFAS, such as tilapia, recommends Woodruff. Smaller fish like tilapia or sardines generally tend to be lower in contaminants. Those can be a win-win for consumers, she said.

Its also important not to rely too heavily on one seafood option, Romano said. The key is really to eat a balanced diet that includes a wide variety of healthy foods and protein sources.

Finally, Chen emphasized the importance of examining your unique eating habits. Then you can investigate how they might contribute to PFAS exposure and make potential changes.

In his new Peacock series Orlando Bloom: To the Edge, the actor Orlando Bloom scales a 400-foot crag, freedives 100 feet on one breath, and jumps out of a plane at 13,000 feet to try wingsuiting for the first time. His wellness practices, as he tells GQ, have involved a similar amount of gutsiness: getting dosed with frog poison, embarking on a fast that involves eating bentonite clay.

More than 20 years after Bloom was first introduced to audiences worldwide as the platinum blond elf Legolas in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, hes now a 47-year-old dad and engaged to pop star Katy Perry. (He also doesnt eat gluten anymore, so there is no lembas bread on the menu.) Hes retained a taste for adventure, even after suffering a near-death accident during which he broke his back. In Orlando Bloom: To the Edge, he discusses the aftermath of that, all while still pushing his body and mind to extremes.

GQ caught up with him to learn how he stays in shape with an eye for longevity, the healthy fats he feeds his brain, and what the deal is with frog poison.

GQ: Whats the first thing you do when you wake up?

Orlando Bloom: We have a family bed. So Katy will be like, "Thank God for the day. I'm just grateful in every way." And Daisy will go, "Mommy, daddy," and we'll have this cute moment. I'll say [the Buddhist chant] "Nam-myoho-renge-kyo," because that's part of my practice. And then we'll embark on the day. Sometimes it's stumble around and find the coffee, and sometimes it's take the tinctures necessary to get my brain online.

What are those tinctures?

I take an adrenal thing and I take some green powders. And I take things that just help me rehydrate, like salts and stuff, lemon tea.

Whats a day's worth of typical meals?

I try to eat a whole food diet as much as possible. I try to avoid sugar, because I'm an addict to sugar. Once I start, I can't stop.

Its hard. What's your poison?

Cookies. Ice cream. So I try to have a balanced diet reallygreens and proteins. Gluten makes me fall asleep.

We see a few clips of you exercising in the show, but what does your typical routine look like?

I try to be functional with how I train my body. I try to think about full body movements, ground to overhead, or a lot of support from my glutes, my legs. Try to get my back supported because obviously I had this back injury. I have a stretch routine, which you see in the show, which is something that I'll do every morning first thing.

I try to mix it up. So I walk a lot or I cycle. Or I try to get cardio at a low heart rate, and then try to get a high cardio heart rate a couple of times if I can. Ive moved away from really heavy weights. I'm thinking more, as I'm in my mid-forties, about longevity. How does my body feel and how do I enjoy this for the long-term?

Speaking of longevity, you brought your uncle on for one of the episodes and talked about this idea of your family aging vitally. When did you start thinking of longevity as part of your wellness routine, and are there any longevity thinkers whose work you subscribe to?

Yeah, Dr. Mark Hyman, is somebody who is a friend and somebody I've spoken to at different times. We had a conversation about the benefits of Bragg's apple cider vinegar in your life. Sometimes I'll have a shot of apple cider vinegar and it'll just switch my brain on almost. It feeds the microbiome in a way that helps me to focus. The Carnivore Diet goes against the grain of nutritional science – Daily Forty-Niner – Daily 49er

Orozco is about to embark on the latest diet fad, the carnivore diet.

I didnt feel good after eating high-carb foods, Orozco said. I would feel tired and have stomach pains.

Orozco restricts his diet to animal products and stays clear of plants. Advocates of the carnivore diet, such as Shawn Baker, author of The Carnivore Diet, claim this diet aids weight loss, regulates blood sugar and improves mood.

Instagram has over two million posts with the hashtag #carnivore and over 113,000 posts with the same hashtag on TikTok. While this fad soars in popularity, it is not met with the same support from dietitians.

Fad diets dont work, said Amanda Sauceda, a dietitian and a nutrition and dietetics professor at Long Beach State.

Lack of nutrients is a primary concern with this diet. Although meat is a great source of iron and B vitamins, most adults in the U.S. experience a deficiency in potassium, dietary fiber and calcium, according to the U.S. governments 2020-2025 Dietary Guideline for Americans.

Nutrient deficiencies can negatively impact digestion, energy levels and mental health. The easiest way to get these nutrients is through fruits, vegetables and other plant-based foods.

However, almost 90% of the U.S. population is failing to meet their recommended vegetable intake and 80% are failing to meet their recommended fruit intake, according to the government guideline.

Meanwhile, almost 70% of the U.S. population exceeds their recommended meat, poultry and egg intake, which are at the center of the carnivore diet.

The carnivore diet does allow multivitamins to fill in the nutrient gaps, although it is not reliable and lacks FDA regulation.

[About 44% of] multivitamin and mineral supplements analyzed in 2020 by ConsumerLab.com were found to have quality problems, such as having more or less of the vitamins and minerals than their labels claimed, according to a consumer reports article about vitamins. Some may even contain contaminants.

Not everyone is consistent with taking vitamins on their own either.

I feel like I dont need [multivitamins] but I still try to take it a couple times a week, Orozco said.

Primitive eating can be well intended by trying to eliminate processed foods, but Kia Octaviano, a registered dietitian at Long Beach State, said extreme dieting can develop into eating disorders.

According to Octaviano, low-carb diets also amplify negative stigmas about carbs even though they are the preferred source of energy for your brain.

Its definitely hard because you start to crave carbs a lot, Orozco said.

Instead of restricting foods, Sauceda and Octaviano recommend a personalized approach focusing on moderation, affordability and adding more nutrient-dense foods for a healthier diet. This can look like a plate with a juicy steak paired with plant-based foods, such as lentils, plantains or a cucumber salad.

[Diet fads] make you fearful of food or shameful that youre eating them, Sauceda said.

Long Beach State students can schedule an appointment with Octaviano through student health services to speak about their health goals and dietary needs.

A lot of diets are the same variation of a low-carb diet, Octaviano said. So if they truly did work why do we have to keep reinventing them.

Law bans sale of over-counter diet pills to youth – Spectrum News

You can find over-the-counter dietary pills and supplements at grocery and big-box stores all over New York state. But a new law is trying to limit their reach to the youngest demographic.

A law that goes into effect on Monday bans the sale of the supplements to anyone under the age of 18. Experts say they are underregulated and could have harmful health effects on kids.

We don't know what's in the products. We don't know if they work. We don't know if they're safe, said Harvard professor Bryn Austin.

He said dietary pills and supplements dont go through the same regulation process as prescription drugs. Studies published through the JAMA Network and National Library of Medicine found the products can contain steroids, experimental or banned stimulants and other dangerous chemicals.

We know it can increase the risk of stroke, of heart attack, of liver injury; sometimes, the injuries so serious that someone needs a liver transplant, Austin said.

Austin said that these products are especially dangerous to young children, and they are marketed to kids who may feel uncomfortable about their appearance.

As the director of Harvards eating disorder prevention group, STRIPED, Austin said the new state law that prevents the sale of these products to anyone under 18 will keep kids safer.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has come out with reports urging clinician boards to talk to children about these products and encourage them to stop using them. They basically said that kids should not use these products for any reason, Austin said.

The law creates age-verification guidelines for retailers and delivery sellers. But Austin says the next step is to raise awareness to parents, letting them know that diet pills and supplements could be harmful.

These kinds of products will not help kids lose weight. They will not help them build muscle, full stop, Austin said.

We reached out to the Council for Responsible Nutrition, whose members staged an unsuccessful court battle to prevent this law from being enacted, but have not yet heard back from them.
