How your diet and positive attitude can flatten the curve of COVID19 – Times of India

Keeping a positive attitude can be the last thing to really possibly have during COVID19 lockdown. Our generation had only heard of stories of World War II and epidemics like plague. We werent prepared for a pandemic of this calibre because we never saw this coming. Here are three small things that can help you in contributing towards flatting the COVID-19 +ve curve for our country and allow you to be invincible even during a pandemic of this volume.1) Eat like a caveman Eating simple meals that we ate as cavemen/ancestors will be your first contribution. More naturally available home-grown ingredients should be consumed. Living a simpler life with more exercise, fewer processed foods to avoid mood swings and COVID-19 related obesity and chronic illnesses will keep your emotions and anxieties under control. Lesser intake of beverages, alcohol and more wholesome meals will be the key factor for you keeping fit, building your immunity and not coming in contact with the virus. Keeping yourself and your family safe without having to visit any doctors will be a huge contribution from your end towards flattening the curve.2) Invest time in reanalysing your career - If you dont have one and were anyways looking at starting something, this is the most ideal time for doing some research and making a blueprint of how you want to get started and what will you be doing? Make use of this unprecedented period of time as a great opportunity to upskill or simply just begin your career as an entrepreneur or later seek a job opportunity. This mind-set can help you stay ahead of the game and away from negative news coming from multiple sources. This positive vision can boost your immune responses and keep you fit and release happy hormones which can help you and your family stay away from the virus and help flatten the curve.3) Being Generous, Contributing and Educating - Be kind and indulge in fund raising for the front-line workers and COVID-19 patients. This activity can really help the needy. Please educate the less privileged section of the society about the basic norms that needs to be followed whilst being under a pandemic. Educating people about how maintaining social distance is of prime importance will serve to be a source of empowerment. Donate masks, sanitisers and gloves to the needy. Adopt a few strays and take care of their meals. Many kids have raised funds, made homemade masks and inspired adults and grandparents to put their skills to use. Staying home has little to do with being horizontal and immerse yourself in front of the T.V. There is so much you can do, teach students online, make healthy recipes at home and teach, stitch masks with T-shirts and hand them over to cops or anyone on the road who doesnt have one, your watchman or your own helpers. This endeavour can really help flatten the curve, imagine 100 masks per family would be able to help so many others and help flatten the curve skilfully. Do your bit and curb this global pandemic!Inputs by Payal Kothari, Integrative Nutritionist and Gut Health Coach

Thousands of personnel were on emergency duties to implement the lockdown and with the Centre extending it till May 3, they have to be on the vigil for 18 more days, Mr. Sawang said.

Our men are performing their duties braving the hot weather. We are planning to give nutritious diet and energy drinks to protect them from sunstroke. Several IPS officers have been leading from the front since Janata Curfew which preceded the lockdown, he said.

The DGP thanked all those who did their bit by extending financial aid. I request the personnel to take care of their family members, who are extending all cooperation to them.I salute them all, the State police chief said.

Mr. Sawang said a medical helpline (Manavata Helpline) was launched to help the families of the personnel. He thanked the government for extending all cooperation to the police.

Police family members can dial mobile numbers .9966673480 (or) 9966673111. Besides, family welfare help desks have been opened in all districts. To contact the help desks, police families may use the Dial 100 service or contact the Special Branch Inspector of the district concerned, said OSD (Police Welfare) P.V.S. Ramakrishna.

Family members can use the helpline in case of any health emergency, DIG (Technical Services) G. Pala Raju said.

Mr. Sawang said instructions had been given to all private hospitals, clinics and Rural Medical Practitioners (RMPs) not to treat persons with coronavirus symptoms, and refer such cases to COVID-19 hospitals.

Study stresses on need for healthy diet, physical activity, and good sleep – The Hindu

At a time when people are looking forward to information on immunity-enhancing nutrition, the University of Mysores Department of Studies in Food Science and Nutrition has come out with a report on Healthy Lifestyle, Nutrition and Food Safety in the present circumstances.

While emphasising the need for a healthy lifestyle that includes healthy diet, physical activity and good sleep to boost the immune system, the report recommends consumption of citrus fruits like oranges, sweet lime and lemon, besides strawberry and watermelon, which are rich sources of micro nutrients such as Vitamin C, potassium, and carotenoids that boost immunity. It is advisable to eat the fruit rather than juice, says the report.

Finding mention in the report is turmeric, which contains curcumin, a potent anti-inflammatory compound. It has been shown to boost immune cell activity and enhance antibody responses. Combining turmeric with black pepper significantly improves curcumin bio-availability. Sprinkle a turmeric black pepper combo onto a smoothie, soup, broth or cooked veggies, said the departments Chairperson Prof Asna Urooj in the report.

Similarly, black cumin, commonly known an kalonji, is cited in the report as a natural remedy for everything from bronchitis to diarrhoea. The report also recommends use of ginger, which is also widely used in the treatment of diseases and conditions such as anti-inflammatory and respiratory ailments, which are prevalent among smokers.

The report also recommends green tea, which contains powerful antioxidants and nutrients that help regulate blood sugar, improve brain function and enhance metabolism. While suggesting exercising at home, the report points out that regular exercise releases endorphins the feel good chemicals besides preserving muscle strength and improving immunity.

With regards to the concerns over handling packages containing food items of daily use from the market, the report pointed out that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S., has said that the virus is unlikely to be transmitted through food itself as it requires a living host like a human or an animal. The universitys report, however, has suggested that cardboard of the food package be discarded immediately. For, the virus, if any, can remain on the cardboard surface up to 24 hours.

Buddhist Diet: How It Works and What to Eat – Healthline

Like many religions, Buddhism has dietary restrictions and food traditions.

Buddhists those who practice Buddhism follow the teachings of the Buddha or awakened one and adhere to specific diet laws.

Whether youre new to Buddhism or want to practice only certain aspects of the religion, you may wonder what those dietary customs entail.

This article explains everything you need to know about the Buddhist diet.

Siddhartha Gautama, or the Buddha, founded Buddhism in the 5th to 4th century B.C. in the eastern part of India. Today, its practiced worldwide (1).

Several forms of Buddhism exist globally, including Mahayana, Theravada, and Vajrayana. Each type has slightly different interpretations of Buddhas teaching, particularly when it comes to dietary practices.

Five ethical teachings govern how Buddhists live.

One of the teachings prohibits taking the life of any person or animal. Many Buddhists interpret this to mean that you should not consume animals, as doing so would require killing.

Buddhists with this interpretation usually follow a lacto-vegetarian diet. This means they consume dairy products but exclude eggs, poultry, fish, and meat from their diet.

On the other hand, other Buddhists consume meat and other animal products, as long as the animals arent slaughtered specifically for them.

Nonetheless, most dishes considered Buddhist are vegetarian, despite not all traditions requiring lay followers of Buddhism to follow this diet (2).

Another ethical teaching of Buddhism prohibits intoxication from alcohol given that it clouds the mind and can lead you to break other religious rules.

Still, lay followers of the religion often disregard this teaching, as some traditional ceremonies incorporate alcohol.

Aside from alcohol, some Buddhists avoid consuming strong-smelling plants, specifically garlic, onion, chives, leeks, and shallots, as these vegetables are thought to increase sexual desire when eaten cooked and anger when eaten raw (3).

Fasting refers to abstaining from all or certain types of foods or drinks.

The practice specifically intermittent fasting is becoming increasingly popular for weight loss, but its also often done for religious purposes.

Buddhists are expected to abstain from food from noon until the dawn of the following day as a way to practice self-control (4, 5).

However, as with the exclusion of meat and alcohol, not all Buddhists or lay followers of the religion fast.

Like other religions, Buddhism has specific dietary practices that followers may or may not practice. Some Buddhists may fast or refrain from consuming animals, alcohol, and certain vegetables.

Every diet, including the Buddhist diet, has pros and cons to consider.

A Buddhist diet follows a primarily plant-based approach.

A plant-based diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, legumes, and beans, but it may also include some animal products.

This diet provides important compounds, such as antioxidants, phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals, and fiber, which have been associated with a decreased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer (6, 7, 8, 9).

Aside from these health benefits, following a plant-based or vegetarian diet may also benefit your waistline.

One study demonstrated that Buddhists who followed a vegetarian diet for 1134 years had less body fat than those who followed the diet for 510 years and even less body fat than those who followed it for 34 years (3).

Vegetarian diets that restrict the intake of meat can be deficient in certain nutrients if they arent planned appropriately even if they permit eggs and dairy.

Studies have found that Buddhist lacto-vegetarians had calorie intakes similar to those of non-vegetarian Catholics. However, they had higher intakes of folate, fiber, and vitamin A and consumed less protein and iron (3, 10).

Consequently, they had lower levels of iron and vitamin B12. Low levels of these nutrients can cause anemia, a condition characterized by a lack of oxygen-carrying red blood cells (3, 10, 11).

Aside from iron and vitamin B12, other nutrients that vegetarians may be lacking include vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and zinc (12).

Still, its possible to consume a nutritionally adequate vegetarian diet by planning properly and taking supplements to fill any nutritional gaps.

Fasting is an important practice in Buddhism. Buddhists generally fast from noon to dawn of the following day.

Depending on your preferences and schedule, you may find fasting for approximately 18 hours every day to either be a pro or con of the Buddhist diet.

Consuming your entire daily calorie intake before noon can not only be physically difficult but also interfere with your social and professional life.

On the other hand, you may find fasting convenient and helpful for weight loss, if thats a goal of yours.

In a 4-day study in 11 overweight adults, those fasting for 18 hours had better blood sugar control and increased expression of genes involved in autophagy a process that replaces damaged cells with healthy ones compared with those fasting for 12 hours (13, 14).

While these results are promising, longer studies are necessary to make definitive conclusions about whether the practice is superior to a standard reduced-calorie diet for weight loss and other health benefits (15, 16, 17, 18).

Given that the Buddhist diet consists primarily of plants, it may lack certain vitamins and minerals, particularly iron and vitamin B12. Fasting, while an important component of Buddhism, may not be for everyone.

While not all Buddhists are vegetarians, many choose to follow a vegetarian or lacto-vegetarian diet.

Here are examples of foods to eat and avoid on a lacto-vegetarian diet:

While its not a requirement of practicing Buddhism, many follow a vegetarian or lacto-vegetarian diet that also excludes alcohol and pungent vegetables and spices.

Below is a 1-day sample menu of a lacto-vegetarian Buddhist diet:

A sandwich made with:

As well as a side of:

A burrito made with:

If you choose to fast, you would consume these meals and snacks before noon.

A lacto-vegetarian Buddhist diet should contain a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and dairy.

Buddhists are encouraged to follow specific dietary guidelines. These differ depending on the form of Buddhism and individual preferences.

Many Buddhists follow a lacto-vegetarian diet, avoid alcohol and certain vegetables, and practice fasting from noon to sunrise the following day.

That said, the diet is flexible, no matter if youre a lay follower of Buddhism or wish to practice only certain aspects of the religion.

Brian May Says COVID-19 Pandemic Has Motivated Him To Stick With Vegan Diet – iHeartRadio

After trying it out in the month of January, Queen guitarist Brian May has stuck with his vegan diet.

He says the reality of the novel coronavirus pandemic has only increased the likelihood of him sticking with plant-based food in the future. And if that's the case, he says he's liable to embody the tired vegan stereotype of preaching about his lifestyle choice.

"If you want to get deep into it, I think we should be looking again at whether we should be eating animals," May told NME in a recent interview. "This pandemic seemed to come from people eating animals, and it's becoming more well known that eating animals is not the greatest thing for our health."

Scientists studying the origin of SARS-CoV-2 are reasonably certain that the virus gained the ability to sicken humans after mutating in bats. The most plausible explanation so far is that the virus's first human victim was someone who handled an infected bat at a live animal market in Wuhan, China.

The FDA says there is no evidence of food or food packaging transmitting the respiratory disease. It remains unclear whether people can become infected with the novel coronavirus if they ingest it through food.

An animal rights advocate for many years, May said he often "grappled" with whether his carnivorous diet was a contradiction. Now that's he's tried veganism for an extended period of time, he can see himself sticking to it.

"But now we've seen more of the effects of how eating animals has brought us to our knees as a species, I think it's time to re-examine our world in a way that doesn't abuse other species," he continued. "Whether we will see that happen, I don't know, but I think I will start to be a bit more preachy about veganism because to me it is the way forward, in so many ways."

May's comments come a day after Paul McCartney made headlines by telling Howard Stern that he hopes China changes its "medieval" laws surrounding wet markets, like the one in Wuhan.
