Greggs creates first ‘diet’ doughnut – by adding a hole to the centre – Yahoo Sports
Doughnuts are usually off the menu if youre on ahealthyeating regime - but Greggs are now offering customers a diet version of the sugary treat.
The bakery chain is selling a glazed ring doughnut in addition to its classic jam doughnut.
While the former contains approximately 191 calories, the latter has 245 calories, according to theirwebsite.
It appears the introduction of a hole - and lack of filling - has culled more than 50caloriesfrom the sweet favourite.

Greggs is encouraging customers to make the simple swap as part of its new healthier doughnut diet initiative.
According toThe Sunday Times, it plans to tweak its displays so that jam doughnuts are surrounded by ring doughnuts, guiding the public to order the lower-calorie product.
Speaking at a recent childhood obesity conference in London, Roger Whiteside, Greggss chief executive said that ring doughnuts take some of the calories out.
As well as a greater calorie content, jam doughnuts also contain 10g of fat, compared to 6.4g found in ring doughnuts.

However, because of its greater surface area thanks to the hole, ring doughnuts have 13g ofsugar which is 22 per cent of their weight - compared to 12g in the jam-packed alternatives.
Greggs new campaign is in response to the governments childhood obesity strategy, which is forcingfoodcompanies to reduce sugar levels in their products.
Speaking about the challenges the chain faced at the same conference, Whiteside added: People like big cakes, not little cakes . . . we know that we shouldnt be encouraging people to eat large cakes . . . but the problem is you have to go with demand.
Wendy Baker, a Greggs spokeswoman, told the paper that they were serious about customer health.
She added: A wider choice of ring doughnuts has been introduced which range from 190 to 260 calories, compared to traditional fondant doughnuts which range from 225 to 340 calories.
Greggs has also reduced sugar by 20 per cent across its sweet range.

Whereas climate scientists want more people to eat greener, that vision might not be viable. The cheapest way of living on a green diet is still too expensive for 20% of the worlds population.
It is well-known how most humans are actively contributing to the climate change problems through their eating habits.
Doing something about this issue is not necessarily straightforward.
The easier option is to switch to a green diet of sorts. It would involve eating more fruits and vegetables.
Plant-based foods and replacements are also high on the agenda of climate scientists.
As the number of different food types increases, one could expect this change to occur naturally. Unfortunately, that is not necessarily the most logical outcome.
Putting any scientific concerns aside, there is another crucial factor to take into account.
The cost of a green diet is simply too high for one-fifth of the Earths population. In the end, it always comes down to money in one way or another.
As fruits and vegetables make up most of the food budget, the problem becomes apparent fairly quickly. A green diet requires the most expensive ingredients worldwide.
It is believed that fruit and veg take up 31% of the average household budget. Although that is a promising figure in its own right, it also causes a lot of financial strain for low-income families.
That doesnt mean the green diet isnt viable in the long run.
If the wealth of low-income countries were to increase, so would the number of people eating green. On paper, at least, as things are the exact opposite in the real world.

Eddie Hall is strongman and TV personality who has won the titles of UKs Strongest Man and Englands Strongest Man numerous times. The star has recently slimmed down and explained his healthy transformation was due to cutting one thing from his diet. By ditching carbs, Eddie dropped from his starting weight of 31st 7lb by around five stone.
The strongman had an interest in sports from a young age and was a national champion swimmer for many years in his youth.
First lifting weights at age 13, Eddie made the decision to become the worlds strongest man when he was 19-years-old and started adjusting his exercise routine to help that.
With his physical strength such a big part of his career, Eddie explained the importance of nutrition in his life.
He told Express.co.uk: Nutrition is key, if I didnt eat everything in sight I wouldnt be anywhere near as strong as I am now.

Ive always had a good balanced healthy diet just times that by four, so if you have a bowl of porridge Id have a bucket of porridge and its as simple as that.

After winning the title in 2017, the athlete became concerned about his health and decided to slim down.

I need to now take a step back and look after my health, he told Express.co.uk.
I cut my carbs out and over the last two years I lost a total of 30kg, or five stone, and I feel a lot better for it and am enjoying my life better for it.
He explained removing unhealthy carbs can be the best way for dieters to get into shape.
The best tip I have would be cut the carbs a little bit, they are the source of all health and obesity problems in this country, Eddie added.
That was the easiest thing I did, up my proteins and fats and cut the carbs a little bit and it worked for me first hand.
Speaking of what carbs should be cut, he said: Crisps and chocolate. Now I tend to stick to the basics, potatoes, rice, pasta, stuff like that, good quality fruits.
Since taking a step back from his career as a strongman, Eddie has taken on different challenges which have been documented on the small screen.
He is back on screen for Eddie Eats America, which airs on Dave tonight. The show will see himl travel around America to take part in some of the biggest and best eating challenges in the US.
Eddie will also show off his strength tonight in Strongest Man in History which will air on History. The athlete will join other strongmen as they attempt famous feats of strength to separate the myths from the truth.

The X Factor boss, 60, has lost an incredible 1.5 stone by becoming a vegan and embracing a new exercise regime.
However, he couldn't hide his delight as he clenched a cigarette between his teeth and clutched a bottle of beer after a night out with partner Lauren Silverman.
Simon flashed a huge grin in the car and continued puffing away in the back of his luxury ride.
The couple had been attending the Shooting Star Ball in West London, and it looks like they had a fun evening.
After deciding to overhaul his lifestyle, Simon was advised to give up booze along with sweet treats and bread.
In an interview with Extra, he explained: "I went to see this guy whos very well-known.
"And he said to me, after doing some blood work, 'You cant have red meat, dairy, sugar, bread or gluten.'
"Im thinking, 'What about alcohol?' And he said, 'Maybe not quite as much as you had before.' And I did it and I stuck to it and its easy."
However, he hasn't given p booze completely as his Britain's Got Talen co-star Amanda Holden revealed Simon had switched to low alcohol "skinny lager".
During an appearance on Good Morning Britain, she said: "Hes drinking lightweight beers, thats the secret.
"And I tasted it because I thought it was gonna taste, like, naff. Actually its quite decent. You could take a tip from him!"

Planetary health diet ‘unaffordable’ for quarter of the population – Spectator.co.uk
A new study estimates that the so-called planetary health diet, which is meant to improve both human and planetary health, would be unaffordable for at least 1.58 billion people, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
Earlier this year, theEAT-Lancet Commission on Food, Planet, Healthpublished recommendations for a universal diet that addresses both human and planetary health. The Commission suggested that adherence to this diet could ensure that our future food systems can sustainably and nutritiously feed the estimated population of 10 billion people in 2050.
The study published today inThe Lancet Global Health from researchers at theFriedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts Universityand theInternational Food Policy Research Institute sought to address what many felt was one of the main components lacking in the creation of the recommended diet, namely affordability.
When formulating this pioneering benchmark diet addressing individual health outcomes as well as the health of the planet the Commission deliberately did not take its cost into account, said senior and corresponding authorWill Masters, an economist at the Friedman School of Nutrition at Tufts.
The research team also found that the EAT-Lancet diet was 64 percent more costly than the lowest-cost combination of foods that would provide a balanced mix of 20 essential nutrients. The EAT-Lancet diet has higher quantities of animal-source foods and fruits and vegetables than the minimum required for nutrient adequacy, and much higher quantities than are now consumed in low-income countries.
We found that the global median of the proposed diet would cost $2.84 per day as of 2011. In low-income countries, that amounts to 89.1 percent of a households daily per capita income, which is more than people can actually spend on food. In high-income countries, we found that the EAT-Lancet reference diet would cost 6.1 percent of per-capita income, which is often less than what people now spend on food, saidKalle Hirvonen, the lead author and development economist in Ethiopia at the International Food Policy Research Institute.
The EAT-Lancet Commission diet consists of a large amount of vegetables, fruits, whole grain, legumes, nuts and unsaturated oils, some seafood and poultry, and little to no red meat, processed meat, added sugar, refined grains, and starchy vegetables.
Fruits, vegetables, and animal-source foods are often the most expensive components of a healthy diet, but prices vary widely around the world, say the researchers.
To compute the affordability of an EAT-Lancet diet in each country, the researchers drew on retail prices for standardised items obtained through the International Comparison Program, a collaboration between the World Bank and country statistical agencies. They used prices for 744 food items in 159 countries, from which they could identify the lowest-cost combination of items in each country to meet EAT-Lancet criteria. They then did the same for nutrient requirements, and compared the cost of food in each country to survey data on household expenditure and income per capita from the World Banks PovcalNet system.
Although 1.58 billion is a lot of people, it is actually a conservative lower limit on the total number who cannot afford the diet recommended by the EAT-Lancet Commission. The cost of food preparation and of non-food necessities ensure that an even larger number of people cannot afford that kind of healthy diet, said Masters.
Even if many poor consumers were to aspire to consume healthier and more environmentally sustainable foods, income and price constraints frequently render this diet unaffordable. Increased earnings and safety-net transfers, as well as systemic changes to lower food prices, are needed to bring healthy and sustainable diets within reach of the worlds poor, concluded Hirvonen.

The study found that for every 10-gram increase in soluble fibre eaten per day, visceral fat was reduced by 3.7 percent over five years. In addition, increased moderate activity resulted in a 7.4 percent decrease in the rate of visceral fat accumulation over the same time period.
We know that a higher rate of visceral fat is associated with high blood pressure, diabetes and fatty liver disease," said Kristen Hairston, M.D., assistant professor of internal medicine at Wake Forest Baptist and lead researcher on the study.

They added: "Our study found that making a few simple changes can have a big health impact."
Ten grams of soluble fibre can be achieved by eating two small apples, one cup of green peas and one-half cup of pinto beans; moderate activity means exercising vigorously for 30 minutes, two to four times a week, Hairston added.
In the longitudinal study, published in the June 16 online issue of the journal Obesity, researchers examined whether lifestyle factors, such as diet and frequency of exercise, were associated with a five-year change in abdominal fat of African Americans and Hispanic Americans - populations at a disproportionately higher risk for developing high blood pressure and diabetes and accumulating visceral fat.
At the beginning of the study, which involved 1,114 people, the participants were given a physical exam, an extensive questionnaire on lifestyle issues, and a CT scan, the only accurate way to measure how much subcutaneous and visceral fat the participants had. Five years later, the exact same process was repeated.
Researchers found that increased soluble fibre intake was associated with a decreased rate of accumulated visceral fat, but not subcutaneous fat.
There is mounting evidence that eating more soluble fiber and increasing exercise reduces visceral or belly fat, although we still don't know how it works," Hairston said.
Adding: Although the fibre-obesity relationship has been extensively studied, the relationship between fibre and specific fat deposits has not. Our study is valuable because it provides specific information on how dietary fibre, especially soluble fibre, may affect weight accumulation through abdominal fat deposits."
According to Harvard Health, engaging in at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per day could help to target the harmful fat.
