No Tax on Diet, Reduced Rate for Local Ginger Beer: Here’s Where the Soda Tax Stands – Seattle Weekly

The legislation is expected to get a final vote today.

Last Wednesday, a Seattle City Council committee voted 5-2 in favor of a proposal to tax sugar-sweetened beveragesaka a soda taxafter a flurry of amendments. The final legislative package is expected to be voted on today.

Heres what you need to know about City Halls run at your ice-cold Coca-Cola.

What the Legislation Does

The proposal, as it currently stands, would tax distributors of sugar sweetened beverages at a rate of 1.75 cents per fluid ounce, while exempting small manufacturers and distributors by charging them a lower rate of one-cent-per-ounce. Diet drinks would be exempted. Council staff estimate that the proposal will generate just under $15 million annually, revenue that would be directed towards nutrition education programs in minority and low-income communities, the citys childhood development program Birth to Five, and the 13th Year Scholarship. Additionally, in response to concerns from labor unions that the tax will result in job losses in the soda and beverage industry, the new legislation includes a $1.5 million funding allocation from the first few years of the tax for job placement and retraining for laid off beverage industry workers.

How the Legislation Has Evolved

The tax has gone through a sequence of revisions since Mayor Ed Murray first announced the proposal back in February of this year.

First his proposal was two cents per fluid ounce. Then, in late April, Murray announced that his office was amending the tax to include diet beverages to widen the tax baseand take into account the fact that diet sodas are consumed at higher rates by whites and affluent individualsand reduce the tax rate to 1.75 cents per fluid ounce.

More changes came to the legislation during its final hearing in the Affordable Housing, Neighborhoods, and Finance Committee. First, taxes on diet drinks were removed, over concerns that it would ruin the very incentive against sugar the tax was designed to create.

Council also threw a bone to some local businesses.

Councilmember M. Lorena Gonzalez introduced an amendment to bring down the tax rate for sugar sweetened beverage distributors that earn between $2 million and $5 million annuallyRachels Ginger Beer was the cited exampleto appreciate the razor-thin financial margins faced by small businesses and to incentive small business growth (the legislation wholly exempts businesses who earn less than $2 million annually). Councilmembers Mike OBrien and socialist Kshama Sawant squirmed at the prospect of taxing beverages marketed to higher income consumers at a lower rate than their low-income equivalents, and voted against the amendment (which sailed through anyways with approval from the rest of the present councilmembers).

Ultimately Councilmembers Sally Bagshaw, Gonzalez, Burgess, OBrien voted in favor of the tax, while councilmembers Herbold and Sawant dissented. Councilmembers Bruce Harrell and Debra Juarez were absent for the vote; however, given the five votes in favor already, the tax is expected to pass Monday.

Where Special Interests Stand

Outside of City Hall, the proposal is one that pits a variety of constituencies against each other (and formulates non-traditional alliances). Labor has sided with business interests, such as small business owners, the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, and the American Beverage Association in condemning the tax arguing that it will kill jobs in the beverage industry. Back in early April, a group of 150 small businesses in Seattle called on Murray to back off the tax for similar reasons, under the broad banner of Keep Seattle Livable For All, a coalition of said businesses partially organized and funded by the American Beverage Association. (The American Beverage Association has lobbied vigorously against soda tax initiatives in other cities and has spent millions to halt public health policies aimed at reducing Americans soda intake.)

The day after the council committee approved the tax package, the King County Labor Council and the Chamber put out a joint statement condemning the tax as a job-killer and called on the council to shelve plans to impose a tax on sweetened beverages that will wreak economic harm on small businesses and working families alike.

One the other side, Public and community health advocates have supported the city in favor of the tax, arguing that soda and other sugar sweetened drinks are a major driver of obesity and diabetes rates and disproportionately impact minority and low-income communities and that similar taxes enacted in other cities have helped reduce soda consumption. Supporters include Southeast Seattle-based social and climate justice group Got Green, the Save the Children Action Network, the Seattle Healthy Kids Coalition (which is chaired by medical and administrative staff from El Centro De La Raz), and physicians and economists.

Pro-tax speakers who testified on Wednesday cited successfully implemented soda taxes in Berkeley, California, and Mexico; studies have shown that the Berkeley soda taxwhich was enacted back in 2014cut soda consumption, lining up with similar results from a nationwide soda tax in Mexico (which also passed in 2014).

As an economist, I can say with confidence that these sugary drink taxes do work. They effectively change peoples behavior and this something weve seen in cities across the U.S. and in Mexico where diabetes is a public health epidemic that is driven in part by sugar drinks, said Melissa Knox, an economics professor at the University of Washington. The sugary drink tax that weve seen in Berkeley for example, it helps producers and consumers internalize the true costs of drinking sugary drinks at the time of consumption rather than let the soda industry to just defer those costs onto consumers and society at a future date.

Parents charged with contributing to child’s death by restricting diet – WLBZ-TV

A trial is underway for the parents of a seven-month-old baby who died after the couple self-diagnosed him with multiple food allergies, and insisted on feeding him only gluten-free and lactose-free foods, including quinoa milk.

It went on to state, family friends said, "despite the baby gasping for air in the days leading to his death, the parents never thought to seek medical attention."

Doctor's have told the parents who run a natural food store in their hometown, their son's diet was not suitable for a baby, the report said.

The attorney for the mother and father said Lucas, had an eating problem and that's the reason they tried out alternative supplements. The Daily Mail also reported, they fed their baby oat milk, rice milk, buckwheat milk, semolina milk and quinoa milk. "All products which they also sell in their store."

The parents now face 18-month jail sentences each. Prosecutors believe the baby's gluten-free diet, contributed to his death from dehydration and undernourishment, according to the report. "Even though Lucas lost a lot of weight and family friends said the boy looked dismal and was gasping for air, they never sought medical attention," prosecutors said.

Child Doctor, Elisabeth De Greef from the University Hospital of Brussels, said feeding a baby these kinds of milk is no-go, "they do not contain the necessary proteins, minerals, and vitamins."

The parents defended themselves in court, the father said, "we never went with Lucas to a doctor because we never noticed anything unusual and the mother said: "We never wished for the death of our son."

A Judge is set to make a ruling on June 14, 2017.

Simple way to boost cancer survival rates: diet and exercise, studies say – The Guardian

A healthy diet and exercise could reduce colon cancer patients chance of death and simply walking could improve survival rates for breast cancer survivors, studies presented at the worlds largest cancer conference have found.

A study of nearly 1,000 colon cancer patients found that those who exercised regularly, ate more fruits and vegetables and avoided refined grains and meats had a 42% lower chance of death after seven years.

Similarly, a study of more than 300 Australian breast cancer survivors who aimed to exercise for 180 minutes per week most by simply walking had far better rates of survival than those who were not part of an exercise program.

The studies were presented amidst a slew of research on the impact of a healthy lifestyle on cancer, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago.

Most of what we know about the importance of exercise post-cancer comes from studying women with breast cancer, said Sandra Hayes, an epidemiologist studying cancer and exercise at Queensland University of Technology in Australia.

Studies conducted on the relationship between exercise and other types of cancer, she said, held up a general set of findings.

Engaging in some activity [or] exercise is better than none, and doing more is generally better than less, Hayes said.

Researchers acknowledged that studies on the effects of exercise and cancer recurrence remain epidemiological, and that causal links are yet to be established. Further, the mechanisms through which exercise may influence cancer survival remain unclear.

In one study, researchers at the University of California San Francisco and colleagues aimed to test whether American Cancer Society (ACS) nutrition and exercise guidelines for cancer survivors could impact survival among colon cancer patients.

In general, the guidelines recommend moderate exercise of 150 minutes per week, eating a diet rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and keeping a healthy body weight. The ACS has detailed guidelines for nutritional and exercise standards for cancer survivors, addressing everything from exercise to eating recommendations forthose who have little appetite.

Researchers found that even colon cancer survivors who drank moderately while following other guidelines had a 42% lower chance of dying than those that did not.

I would recommend that patients build up to exercising for at least 150 minutes per week, said the senior author, Erin Van Blarigan, an epidemiologist at University of California San Francisco. Brisk walking is a great exercise for everyone. I would also recommend that patients aim to eat at least five servings of vegetables every day, not counting potatoes, and choose whole grains over refined grains.

Van Blarigan said she was surprised by the strong correlation between healthy diet, exercise and lowered mortality.

These recommendations can be applied within whatever diet type an individual prefers, she said. The key is finding foods that fit the recommendations that you enjoy, so you can continue this pattern of eating for the long term.

In a smaller study, Hayes and colleagues in Australia randomly assigned more than 300 breast cancer survivors to groups that received exercise counseling or to a control group.

All patients were six weeks out of surgery, and lived in both rural and urban settings. The exercise program lasted eight months. The goal was to exercise 180 minutes per week. Most of the participants, researchers said, chose simply to walk.

After a median follow-up of roughly eight years, researchers found 5.3% of the women who had received exercise counseling had died, versus 11.5% of those who had not received counseling. Similarly, 12.1% of women in the group that received exercise counseling had a recurrence of cancer, versus 17.7% of those who did not.

The researchers said an exercise program after treatment has clear potential to influence survival.

The ‘Blue Zones’ diet: Foods that help people live to 100 – Today.com

There are five places on earth which have the highest percentage of people who live to a healthy and happy 100 years. They're called the "Blue Zones" by National Geographic author Dan Buettner, who has explored their secrets to a thriving longevity in his book, "The Blue Zones Solution: Eating and Living Like the World's Healthiest People."

Buettner has discovered what he believes is the answering to reaching such an old age and being healthy right up to the end: diet. So he has set out to capture the recipes of the world's longest living people.

"Individuals get lucky, but populations dont," Buettner told NBC's Maria Shriver in the TODAY series, "Eating to 100." "Theres too many people to chalk it up to collective luck, or even genes," said Buettner.

No matter where people live, these foods make up all longevity diets: beans, greens, grains, and nuts.

"They know how to make them taste good and they know how to optimize them for their health," Buettner said.

In our series, "Eating to 100," Buettner and NBC's Maria Shriver visit three of the Blue Zones:

On the remote Greek island of Ikaria, people outlive the average American by more than a decade. On Ikaria, 97 percent of the people are over age 70 and Buettner found only three cases of dementia. By comparison, there's a 50 percent change of dementia for Americans who reach 85.

A common side dish is wild dandelion, boiled like spinach. These greens have 10 times more antioxidants than red wine, according to Buettner. Chickpeas, also a favorite on Ikaria, are the cornerstone of every longevity diet in the world, he said.

The Nicoya Pennisula is famous for beautiful sandy beaches, exotic wildlife and people who seem to defy the limits of age. In Nicoya, about 1 in 250 people live to 100, compared to 1 in 4,000 who make it to 100 in America. Their diet of rice, beans and tortillas would be viewed as unhealthy in America. But it's way better than you think.

"If the average American could add a cup of beans a day, it would extend their life by four years," said Buettner.

An hour west of Los Angeles is Loma Linda, California, where nearly half of the city belongs to the Seventh -Day Adventist Church. It's home to one of the highest concentrations of Seventh-Day Adventists in the United States. Most of the church members don't eat meat or fish and they never touch alcohol or cigarettes. And they live about seven to 10 years longer than the rest of Americans, according to the Adventist Health Study.

In Loma Linda, eating healthfully is part of the religion. Their diet is inspired by the Bible, the diet of the Garden of Eden. Their meals rely on beans, nuts, slow-cooked oatmeal, whole wheat bread and real soy milk. They also drink six to eight glasses of water a day, as prescribed by the church's founder, Ellen G. White, who established the faith over 150 years ago. Also, the citizens of Loma Linda are always on the move, taking afternoon walks and adhering to a strict lifestyle.

It's never too late to start living like the people of the "Blue Zones," Buettner believes.

"You can be 90 years old and go plant based and you'll add to your life," he told TODAY. "It's not as hard as some might believe once you've tasted it."

Got OCD? Changing Your Diet Might Help – AlterNet

You are what you eat. Its one of those little phrases that crops up all the time to remind you that food can play a big part in your well being. In other words, if you change your diet, you can change your life. Not convinced?

Take people suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD is an anxiety disorder that leads to certain types of repetitive behavior, thoughts, or compulsions that are beyond the sufferers control. This tends to manifest in psychological tics such as repeating gestures or rituals which help provide relief from anxiety that mounts when those actions are not completed. Ironically, by being a bit obsessive about what food they eat, OCD sufferers can actually reduce their symptoms.

OCD is a complex disorder that can be triggered by a number of factors. For that reason, there is no simple solution to reducing its effects. But, by thinking about the nutrients and vitamins in food and how these affect the body and mental health, a big difference can be made. Below are several such examples:

Tryptophan

Youve likely heard about tryptophan as the thing in turkey that makes you feel sleepy. Though this is actually a bit of a myth, there is some truth to the calming effects of tryptophan. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid, which once ingested, is first converted into another amino acid, 5-hydroxytryptophan, and then into serotonin, a mood-regulating neurotransmitter. Serotonin helps to regulate essential bodily activities like sleep, mood, pain, appetite, and yes, you guessed it, anxiety. As such, OCD sufferers often have a serotonin deficiency.

There are a number of foods apart from turkey that contain serotonin-producing tryptophan. These include fellow protein-rich foods like chicken, milk, eggs and cheese. Another key source of tryptophan can be found in whole grain foods such as brown rice, quinoa, beans, legumes, pumpkin, sunflower sesame seeds, and even nuts. The Association for Comprehensive NeuroTherapy, further recommends that when eating whole grain foods such as bread, pasta and cereal, make sure that whole grains are listed as one of the main ingredients to ensure you enjoy the full effects.

Ideal meal: a whole grain cereal covered in low-fat milk or yogurt, and topped with granola.

Fruits and Vegetables

There are many causes, known and unknown, for how the OCD condition can develop. One theory suggests the behavior can be triggered by an excessive secretion of adrenalin which in turn leads to hypoglycemia, more commonly known as low blood sugar.

Clinical nutritionist Jurriaan Plesman of the Hypoglycemic Health Association of Australia, explains that this is due to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance takes place when your body is unable to stabilize its blood sugar levels, which leads to an increase in the production of stress hormones such as adrenaline and in turn leads to an increase in anxiety. The solution, Plesman suggests, is a hypoglycemic diet that can help normalize blood sugar levels and prevent the excessive secretion of the stress hormones, which in turn may reduce or prevent symptoms of OCD.

Key to such a diet, and really any healthy eating scheme, are fruits and vegetables. Along with helping to normalize blood sugar levels, fruit and vegetables are a great source of antioxidants (such as beta-carotene and vitamin C) which can greatly help to reduce anxiety.

Ideal, nutrient-rich examples: berries, citrus fruits, tomatoes, leafy greens, broccoli, bell peppers, brussels sprouts and squash.

Fish, Walnuts and Flaxseed

Youve heard fish referred to as brain food before, right? Well theres good reason for that. For one, fish are often rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which greatly help with brain function and as some research suggests, benefits for people suffering from nervous disorders. A study published last year for instance directly attributes eating fish to a reduced risk of Alzheimers disorder. Flaxseed and walnuts are also prime sources for omega-3 fatty acids.

Ideal fish: coldwater fish such as salmon, herring, lake trout, halibut and mackerel.

Folic Acid and Vitamin B12

Dr. Ray Sahelian, a nutrition export and author of "MindBoosters has some advice in his book for people suffering from OCD. Dr. Sahelian suggests that OCD sufferers eat foods rich in folic acid and vitamin B12. Folic acid foods include broccoli, bananas, potatoes and soy products. B12 can be found in liver and dairy products, or found in supplements such as 5HTP.

Just as important as eating the right food of course, is avoiding food and certain eating patterns that can add to anxiety, which in turn contributes toward OCD. WebMD suggests the following helpful tips for keeping you on the road to a healthier body and mind.

1. Avoid or limit caffeine intake.

Caffeine can heighten stress-induced anxiety, especially if consumed in high quantities. That said, if you already have a lot of caffeine in your diet, its important to slowly cut down to avoid sending your body into shock. Apart from coffee, and tea, remember that caffeine can also be found in soft drinks and chocolate.

2. Moderate alcohol consumption.

Drinking alcohol to deal with stress often ends up worsening the problem. Instead, if you do want a drink, try limit yourself to 2 drinks a day for men and 1 drink a day for women to keep a healthy balance.

3. Maintain consistent mealtimes.

Skipping meals can cause your blood sugar to drop, WebMD explains, which will make other stress-related symptoms worse, such as headaches or stomach tension.

4. Dont use food to deal with stress.

Its important that the food you eat is healthy and helps to reduce stress, but dont turn to it as a crutch. Comfort eating generally leads to overeating. Instead of turning to food to help with anxiety, rather seek out other forms of relaxation such as exercise, playing with a pet, or taking a bath, suggests WebMD.

In my current life, I am healthier that I have ever been, wrote Gianna Marinelli in a blog post explaining how her change in diet affected her life. I am OCD and anxiety free, for the first time in 10 years, and I owe it to how I am eating. All the residual OCD symptoms are gone, and they only arise when I deviate from eating good foods.

Marinelli stands as a testament to the benefits of better eating. That said, its important to note that OCD is a complex disorder that requires attention on multiple fronts. If you feel like you may suffer from OCD, the first step is to reach out to your physician for a referral to a qualified psychiatrist or psychologist. From there, you can begin the holistic process toward recovery, beginning with the food you chose to eat.

Controversial Raw Vegan Bloggers Claim Diet Gets Rid of ‘Toxic’ Menstruation – Yahoo Health

You may have a heavy period with annoying and painful side effects like cramps and headaches, but is it better not to have a period at all? Some raw vegan bloggers think so, and they are encouraging their readersto follow a similar extreme diet in order to lighten or eradicate their periods, which they claim are toxic.

Many girls who lose their period often worry and try numerous things to get it back, Miliany Bonet wrote on her blog, RawVeganLiving. Its often advised that to get your period back, you should stop exercising and eat more calories and incorporate more plant-based fats in your diet. What if I told you that everything you were taught about menstrual cycles was a complete LIE?!

Despite controversy, Bonet continues to support her claim. A non-menstruating body indicates the body is clean, the 19-year-old told Broadly in May. If a woman or young girl decided she wanted to stop menstruating or lighten up her heavy periods, then I would recommend a raw foods diet to help them with that. The industry has done a great job of brainwashing too many women into thinking that if they do not get their periods on a monthly basis, that something is wrong with their body and hormones.

Bonet is not the only blogger to lose her period and insist that its healthy. Back in 2013, controversial raw vegan blogger Freelee the Banana Girl shared a video discussing her period, stating that she was happy when she lost her period, and suggesting that her now very light, three-day period was healthy. A lot of people were like, no, thats unhealthy, you need your period, thats terrible. But is it? Well, a lot of people dont know, Freelee said. And all I can go on is my instincts and my feeling at the time that it felt good. It felt right, and at the time I think it needed to happen for my body to balance out.

As Freelee says, listening to your bodys signals is a good thing. But losing your period is indeed a signal sent from your body, and an important one at that. Doctors warn against changing your diet in an attempt to alter your menstrual cycle. Dieting to get rid of your period is unhealthy and anyone promoting this should be ashamed of themselves and take a first year biology course, Dr. Jen Gunter told theDaily Mail. This is a very dangerous idea and displays a complete lack of understanding of female biology and the human body in general. Periods are not bad or filled with toxins. This trend is alarming because it comes from someone who clearly has no understanding of periods or even biology in general and is just another form of body shaming.

Gunter says that women who are very thin and dont have a period may not be ovulating, and thus have very low estrogen levels and risk osteoporosis and other health concerns.

While Freelee acknowledges that ovulating is important and advises followers who lose their periods to check that they are still ovulating, she herself does not follow this advice. For some reason I just instinctively felt like I was still ovulating because I felt so good, Freelee said. I still believe that, largely, menstruation is toxicity leaving the body, she explains in her controversial video, which was heavily criticizedby some viewers and the eating-disorder charity Beat. So a lot of people are having these heavy, heavy periods and painful periods because they have a toxic body or have a toxic diet.

In response to the video, Beat defined the absence of periods as amenorrhea, a sign that somebody is at a low weight. Amenorrhea has in the past been used to diagnose anorexia nervosa.Being at a low weight and restricting intake for a significant [length] of time can have other serious side effects low blood pressure, osteoporosis, organ failure, infertility, restricted growth among others, Beat said.

Even vegan dietitian Vesanto Melina, a memberof the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, agrees that vegan diets centered around only fruit, as many raw vegan diets are, are low in protein and zinc. Its not an ideal vegan diet because the nutrient intake is very insufficient, Melina told Hollywood Life. And while its certainly possible to maintain a healthy vegan diet, losing your period is not a good sign. These women believed it was a good thing. They made a mythology out of it. But its not a normal thing. You need different food groups.

Despite the risks, these blogs remain popular, and a video uploaded by Freelee in September, which claims, If youve got heavy periods, thats not normal, has been viewed almost 250,000 times. That is not as healthy as you can be.

Dropping Acid (From Your Diet) – Jewish News of Greater Phoenix

We had a dinner guest who after confirming his arrival time advised us that he is on a low-acid/high-alkaline diet. This diet gained some popularity when Victoria Beckham tweeted about it a few years back. It has spread to help those suffering from reflux and associated stomach woes.

The diet requires the avoidance of foods like vinegar, citrus, tomatoes and things high in fat. It encourages the consumption of low-acid foods such as unsweetened yogurt and low-fat milk, most vegetables, certain carbohydrates, eggs and fats like olive oil, avocado and nuts. Technically, the dessert wasnt strictly adherent to the diet because sugar is a no-no, but it was pretty close. Chocolate is forbidden, as is anything high in fat, so I was fairly limited in my selections. But Im a believer in moderation and, fortunately for our guest, his condition is not too severe, and he is able to enjoy modest amounts of the discouraged foods.

Christian Siriano Pairs Lobster With a Pimm’s Cup – Grub Street

Fashion designer Christian Siriano became a household name after winning Project Runway, and hes gone on to build a successful eponymous label earning recognition for creating dresses for women of varying ages, sizes, and statures. He also just collaborated on a wine with Ecco Domani: I work on clothes all the time, he says. I like projects that are about designing something else. Siriano spent Memorial Day weekend at his country house, drinking his own wine (of course) and grilling burgers and corn. Back in the city, he ate sushi and sandwiches in between celebrity fittings and prep for his upcoming Resort collection. Read all about it in this weeks Grub Street Diet.

Thursday, May 25 I wake up at 7 a.m. Its a bit cold and dreary in New York for this time of year, and with so much going on, it doesnt feel like a long weekend is coming up. I start the day with some steel-cut oats and a chopped banana mixed in, and a cup of hot tea. Im not a coffee person. I drink water throughout the day, and if I need a caffeine boost, Ill have an occasional Diet Coke.

Head to the office. The day is full of preparation for my upcoming Resort collection, which Im shooting next week. Im so busy, I almost forget to eat lunch. I love trying new restaurants, but my office becomes hectic when Im working on a collection. At around 2:30 p.m., I go for the tuna sandwich and cucumbers I brought from home, and its just enough to power me through the rest of the day.

Resort collection is done! Around 7 p.m., things seem to be winding down, and I make plans to meet my husband, Brad, for dinner at Momoya, a sushi restaurant near our apartment. I said I would make an effort to scale back on the carbs, but hunger gets the best of me, and I cheat a little with some crispy rice and a tuna tortilla. I pair it with a green salad that balances it out, right?

Friday, May 26 Another 7 a.m. wake-up call, but at least the sun is shining! For breakfast, I make some scrambled eggs and avocado, with a cup of hot tea. Itll be another busy day in the studio before everyone heads out for the holiday weekend.

For lunch, the team orders in from Sushi Star near the office. Clearly, last nights dinner wasnt enough. I order a tuna-poke bowl, but opt for zucchini noodles instead of rice. I head out shortly after lunch to get home and pack for the weekend Brad and I are going to our country house in Connecticut for some (hopefully) sun and (definitely) R&R before a crazy week ahead.

But first, around 6 p.m., before we hit the road, we stop by one of our favorite restaurants in the city for an early, quick bite: the Beatrice Inn. Brad gets the burger, I get the lobster, and we share. Brads driving, so he sticks to water. I sip on a Pimms Cup.

Off to Connecticut! We get there around 10:30, and pass out as soon as our heads hit the pillow.

Saturday, May 27 I love waking up in our country house its just such a fun, different vibe than the energy of the city. I sleep a bit later, until around 9 a.m., and then get up and take our pups out for a morning walk.

Back in the kitchen by 9:30 a.m., and its time for breakfast. I make some whole-wheat toast with peanut butter, and sit down with a hot cup of tea and a newspaper. Whenever we come out to Connecticut, we like to do a lot of casual hanging around, since were always on the go in the city.

By 1 p.m., Im already hungry for lunch, so Brad and I (mainly Brad ) whip up some brown-rice bowls with assorted veggies. The weather isnt great, but we eat outside by the pool and feel like were on vacation. Brad and I cooked a ton early on, when we first started dating. Now, we dont cook as much as we would like to, but hes so good at it. Every holiday, he loves cooking for 20 people. Whereas for me, it feels like a chore. Im just hungry! I just want to eat.

At 4 p.m., Brad and I run out to Doms Garden Center in Danbury and pick up a few new arrangements for our garden, and for dinner! We have a few friends coming over to eat and catch up, and fresh florals are always a must-have.

Im definitely not someone who is great in the kitchen beyond making my breakfasts so I leave the gourmet cooking to Brad. Pasta is among his specialties, and tonight hes making some penne tossed with a homemade sauce of fresh tomato, basil, and olive oil. We pair it with some grilled leftover veggies from lunch.

My limited-edition label design for Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio is finally coming out next week, so we open one of the bottles and have a fun, casual dinner party. Its a light, fruity wine, and it goes well with the flavors of Brads pastas. The design was inspired by Palm Springs and between the food, the drinks, and the atmosphere, were starting to feel like weve been transported there a bit. Im definitely more involved in the packaging I didnt create the wine! but I was excited to create something that was beautiful and feminine and romantic.

Our friends leave around 11 p.m., Brad and I clean up and crash.

Sunday, May 28 Wake up at 9 a.m. Take the dogs for their walk. When I come back, Brads making scrambled eggs, avocado, and sauted veggies. I pair all that with my tea and a tall glass of water.

Another day of lounging around. Around noon, Brad and I head out to check out a yard sale in the neighborhood. I love finding little trinkets and treasures in places like that yard sales, antique shops. Spoiler: We find nothing and head back home.

A late lunch around 3 p.m. Brad grills some chicken, and we have it along with brown rice and hummus. Brad has a little leftover pasta, too.

The yard-sale trip took a bit out of us, and we settle down for a nap. We wake up around 7 p.m. and decide we want to get Mexican for dinner really hitting on all the cuisines this weekend. We head to Las Maanitas, a local place not too far from our country house, but we keep it light, since were still a little full from lunch. We split chips and guacamole, and an order of chicken enchiladas.

Monday, May 29 Our last morning in Connecticut! We wake up early, around 7 a.m., walk the dogs, and make breakfast. Im back to my steel-cut oats with banana. And, you guessed it, a hot tea.

Our office is closed for the holiday, but the work doesnt stop! I answer a few emails and remind my staff to try not to work today. But its a busy week my Resort collection is getting shot; I have a few celebrity fittings.

Around noon, we pull together a homemade Greek salad, minus the Feta. Brads got all the fixings for a barbecue for dinner, so we dont want to have a heavy lunch.

Around 4 p.m., Brad fires up the grill hamburgers, hot dogs, corn, and other vegetables. Its the perfect end to Memorial Day weekend.

Its getting close to 8 p.m., and Im getting ready to head back to the city. I hope Ive stuck it out long enough to not be caught in traffic. Brad stays in Connecticut one more night.

Back by 10 p.m.! Not bad at all, but the driving was exhausting, and knowing I have a busy week ahead, I head to bed right away.

Tuesday, May 30 Back to work! I wake up a bit earlier than usual, around 6:30 a.m., and make myself some whole-wheat toast with peanut butter.

Im in the studio at 9 a.m., and do a few fittings before heading back to the Beatrice Inn at 11 to do my photo shoot for this article! A few quick snaps, and Im rushing back to the studio for more fittings. We have the CFDAs on Monday, and the Tony Awards a week later. Im excited. My hint for the CFDAs is that Im taking a 90s icon. I cant say more. Whats great about the Tonys is, were making some custom pieces for theater legends and for some young stars attending their first show.

For lunch, around 1 p.m., I order in from Balade Your Way, which is just a couple of blocks away. I get grilled chicken, brown rice, hummus, and cucumbers. The rest of the day flies by, with fittings and prep for our Resort collection photo shoot tomorrow. I cant wait for everyone to see it.

The Real-Life Diet of WWE Star Jinder Mahal, Who Transformed Himself into a Champion – GQ Magazine

Professional athletes dont get to the top by accident. It takes superhuman levels of time, dedication, and focusand that includes paying attention to what they put in their bellies. In this series, GQ takes a look at what pro athletes in different sports eat on a daily basis to perform at their best. Heres a look at the daily diet of Jinder Mahal, who left the WWE and came back shredded.

Two years ago, Jinder Mahal was released by WWE following a stint in the sometimes fun but ultimately underwhelming comedy act known as 3MB. Less than two weeks ago, Jinder Mahal shocked the wrestling world by winning the WWE Championship. At the root of Mahals sudden and unexpected rise to the top of the card? A completely revamped diet-and-exercise routine that has dramatically changed his physique and has him oozing with confidence. (Enough confidence to state on live TV that he was going to be on the cover of GQ. Says Mahal: I have the look, I obviously have the body, and as you can see on SmackDown Live every week, I have impeccable style!) We caught up with the Modern Day Maharaja to find out what inspired his new lifestyle, what foods to eat in order to have veins in your abs, and why youre likely to write off all his hard work and scream, Steroids!

GQ: A lot has changed for you over the past year or so. Youre now the WWE champion, but maybe even crazier than that is the physical transformation youve gone through. I was curious, when did you first decide that you were going to change up the way you work out and the way you eat?

Jinder Mahal: It started almost exactly a year ago. June 1st. I wasnt signed back to WWE and I was eating a bunch of junk food and drinking too much beer. One day I just decided I was going to quit drinking, focus on my health, and start dieting again. One of the very first things I did was I contacted a meal prep company. Its called Nutrition Solutions. So I quit drinking, got the Nutrition Solutions going, and just started training hard again. Two months later, I was signed back to WWE.

I dont think it was a coincidence. I was away from WWE for two years. I didnt really care, and nobody cared about me. But as soon as I started caring about myself and putting in the effort in the gym and with my diet, quit drinking, two months later I was back in WWE.

It sounds like cutting out alcohol was a huge part of your new lifestyle.

That was the first big step, yes.

Have you picked up a drink since?

No, Ive given up alcohol. And honestly, I feel great. I dont miss it at all. Now, not drinking for so long, Ive realized how horrible it really makes us feel. Ive never felt better. Im not even tempted to drink because of how good I feel. Having a drink now would probably give me the worst hangover in my life. I dont need it. Im more focused on my career and I see everything moving in such a positive direction that Im not even tempted. I dont want to drink. I dont want to eat junk food.

Aside from the beer and alcohol, from a solid food standpoint, what was the biggest change to your diet? Youre so much leaner now compared to even a year ago. Was it cutting out carbs or sugars or anything like that?

I actually started being more consistent with my meals. Before when I was hungry, I would eat a big meal and then not eat for a couple of hours. Maybe have a snack. But what I do now, whats made the biggest change in my physique, is I eat every two hours and I eat the same portion mealabout 350 to 400 calories, about 30 grams of carbs, and 30 to 40 grams of protein. I eat a meal with that same breakdown every two hours.

Whats the logic behind that?

When youre constantly feeding your body like that, it knows that its going to be fed again in two hours. So it doesnt hold any fat. Your body starts to hold fat basically when youre inconsistent. You might eat a big meal and then the body thinks, Im not going to get fed for six more hours, but then maybe an hour later you eat again. So the main thing has to be consistency. If you eat every two hours, your body doesnt really hold much fat and it actually speeds up your metabolism. I actually eat more throughout the day now because Im having seven or eight meals, but Im leaner because Im eating those meals so consistently that it speeds up my metabolism.

And youre probably not overeating at any point either.

No, I dont overeat. I eat my meal and then Im waiting for the next two hours so I can eat some more. Im never really full and Im never really hungry.

I know you said you could be eating seven or eight meals a day, but what do those meals typically consist of? Could you take me through a general day of your diet?

The first thing I do when I wake up is cardio on an empty stomach. Ill just drink water or maybe Ill have a black coffee with no sugar, and Ill do about 25 minutes of cardio, six days a week. If Im home, I have an elliptical trainer. If Im on the road, I always go down to the hotel gym and just use whatever cardio equipment they have. I prefer to use the elliptical because its a little bit easier on my joints than running on a treadmill. But right after I do that I have my first meal, which is usually one packet of oats and two scoops of whey protein isolate. I just dump the oatmeal right into the protein shake and mix it with water. Ill also have one banana. Thats meal number one.

About an hour after that I get my workout in. Im training for about an hour and a half. I do about 30 minutes of stretching and then right after that workout I eat another banana, a packet of oats, and a few scoops of protein for my post-workout meal. An hour after that is when I start my regular meals. With the meal prep company, it makes it so easy and its a different variety every meal. Chicken and rice, pasta and turkey. Like I mentioned before, the main key is balance. Each meal has those balanced macronutrientssame amount of protein, same amount of carbs.

Do you differentiate at all in your diet between simple and complex carbohydrates?

I try to eat more simple sugar carbs like white rice earlier in the day, closer to my workout. Then I switch to complex carbs later on in the day. Maybe brown rice or whole-wheat pasta or sweet potatoes.

When youre traveling from show to show with the WWE, does that make it harder to keep consistent with your diet?

I have a system. I bring food with me. Ive got a six-pack bag where I keep food for the day. And in my checked bag I keep frozen meals on ice packs. So what I do is, I always make sure I get a hotel room with a fridge so I can refrigerate some meals and keep those other ones frozen. If the fridge doesnt have a freezer, I just ask the front desk and theyll usually put my meals that I need to keep frozen in their freezer. So the meals I thawed out in the fridge Ill put in my six-pack cooler the next day with the ice packs. Then I put the frozen ones in my bag and by the time I get to the hotel the next night, theyre ready to be thrown in the fridge. I kind of have a system worked out. Half my suitcase is literally supplements and food in Tupperware and ice packs.

Honestly, that sounds like a ton of work.

It is a lot of work, but its totally worth it because I see the changes in my physique. Another thing I do is that I always have microwavable rice packs. Uncle Bens, I believe it is. So I keep both brown and white rice. I try and not eat out when Im on the road. Sometimes I might find a grocery store or a Whole Foods. Whole Foods is perfect because you can buy salmon filets or even cooked chicken breasts. But you can go to any grocery store and chances are they have cooked chicken breasts at the deli. I might even buy a rotisserie chicken, peel the skin off, and try to eat the white meat along with some rice. And I actually keep hot sauce with me, too. The one that I really like is Taco Bell Hot Sauce. I usually buy it in the bottle, along with spicy mustard. Those two together on just about anything, even plain chicken and rice, it tastes delicious.

Ive spoken to some of your fellow WWE superstars about their favorite places to eat on the road before. If you are in an absolute bind and something goes wrong with the food you usually bring with you, where is your go-to spot?

You can actually eat very clean at Chipotle. They have white rice, they have brown rice, and they have chicken. I stay away from the guac and the sour cream. I just get lettuce, double-meat chicken, and a white or brown rice. Sometimes you dont realize how bad you feel from just eating out all the time at fast food places. I havent eaten McDonalds or any other fast food in I dont know how long. Not even pizza.

You mentioned earlier traveling with supplements. Are you taking a bunch of different supplements, or do you keep it a little bit more basic?

No, I actually take quite a few supplements. I have protein with me all the time. I always have branched-chain amino acids. I take those with water before my morning cardio. They prevent muscle breakdown. I take a magnesium supplement before my workout because it prevents cramping. You know, I have to wrestle every night and I have to train so hardsometimes Ill work out and then later on I feel my back starting to cramp up. So magnesium helps a lot with that. I take multivitamin packs. Theres like 10 different multivitamins and digestive enzymes all in one little packet. I take one packet of those every morning. I take creatine and a pre-workout before I work out. And I always switch my pre-workout. Every bottle I finish, I get a different one so my body never gets used to it.

Like, a totally different brand?

Yeah. Sometimes you find youve got to take two scoops now or three if the pre-workout is not working anymore, because you start to build up a tolerance. So just to keep my body guessing, every time I finish a bottle of pre-workout I go buy a completely different kind.

Youve addressed this on your Instagram account before, but a lot of people see the physical transformation youve gone through and immediately write it off as PEDs or steroids. Why do you think so many people have that reaction?

I dont think people realize the hard work that goes into it. Nobody sees the work Im putting in the gym. Nobody sees me doing cardio first thing in the morning. Nobody sees me lugging around that suitcase. And just generally, people dont have that much knowledge about diet and the effects that diet alone can have on your body. If you see a bodybuilder before theyre in competition shape to when they get into competition shape, thats all dieting, carb cutting, and macronutrients. I mean, you can totally transform yourself just by cutting carbs and even something as simple as drinking a gallon of water a day. The average personlike, 90 percent of the average populationis dehydrated. Thats another thing that I do now, which has been a huge key.

Yeah. I drink two gallons of water a day. Ive already drank one gallon by the time I finish my workout, and then I drink another gallon for the rest of the day. Every morning or every night, I go to the gas station to buy two gallons of water. I always have a jug of water with me. You can see it even when I walk into the arena, Ill have a jug of water with me.

Do you drink just straight water, or are you staying hydrated with any other type of sports drink?

I put those branched-chain amino acids in the jug of water for a little bit of flavor. It makes the water go down a lot easier. Plus it gives me those amino acids throughout the day to help with muscle recovery. But youve got to build up to two gallons. You cant just go from zero to two gallons. I recommend at least getting one gallon of water a day. Ive seen some people who are overweight, the only thing they change is they start drinking a gallon of water a day, and theyve lost up to 10 pounds within a couple of weeks. Like I was saying, though, generally theres not a whole lot of education out there about nutrition and all of this.

Aside from drinking more water, whats one thing that the majority of the population has no idea about when it comes to diet and nutrition that you think they should?

I never mix fats and sugars because it spikes your insulin and the fats that youre taking in immediately get stored. If Im eating a simple carb like white rice, Ill try and keep the fat intake to an absolute low.

Youre so strict and regimented with your diet, which I think is amazing, but do you ever allow yourself a break? A cheat meal here or there?

This is all possible because the meal prep company has these healthy versions of meals like pizza. Theyll have a protein pizza, where they use a whole-wheat wrap at the bottom and lean chicken on top. So my taste buds get a bit of a break from just eating plain chicken breast and rice all the time. I think thats key. Sometimes post-workout Ill have a Lenny & Larrys Complete Cookie. Thatll be like my treat. Plus after your workouts you need the simple sugars, you need the simple carbohydrates for glycogen. I wouldnt recommend eating one before bed, but post-workout your body takes whatever sugar you put into it and refills the glycogen stores. You kind of need it.

Did you at least allow yourself a celebratory meal after winning the WWE Championship?

No, it was business as usual. I actually remember what I ate. I had brown rice and seared Ahi tuna. My family came down for the match and we all went out to eat, but I stayed on my diet because I know that the hard work begins now. Everybody thought I was working hard to become champion, but you should see how hard Im working now. Im going to diet even harder because to become champion is one thing, but I want to keep my championship. I want to be a long-reigning champion. I want to be a multiple-time champion. I want to go down as one of the greats, and I know that the hard work is just beginning now.
