Overweight Force India car forces Sergio Perez into ‘extreme diet’ – ESPN
Sergio Perez has revealed Force India's overweight 2017 car has forced him into an "extreme diet" to shed pounds ahead of the new season.
Force India's underwhelming pre-season in Barcelona prompted questions about the team's competitiveness ahead of the new season, and soon reports surfaced of both drivers being asked to lose weight in a bid to help the team. Though all the drivers have been bulking up ahead of the new season in order to handle the bigger, faster 2017 cars, Perez confirms he has had to do the opposite since leaving Spain.
"I have tried so hard to lose weight in the last couple of weeks since Barcelona," Perez said, revealing he's already dropped two kilos since testing finished. "Obviously I increased my weight from last year purely by training harder, putting on more muscle, but I was on an extreme diet all last week and still now until Saturday [I will do the same].
"I am all the time very hungry. As much weight as I can lose, the better it will be for us."
Perez says Australia will be the first chance to properly test the car with his adjusted weight. The Mexican driver is not expecting his dramatic diet to be a long-term solution to Force India's problems.
"We haven't weighed the car actually, because in testing you have a lot of sensors and things on the car. Right now, considering that I lose two kilos or three since Barcelona, then probably we might be quite close [to the ideal level].
"I think the weight, sooner or later we will be on it. If not this weekend, then latest by Bahrain, so I don't think that is a big issue."

6 Questions You Need To Ask Yourself Before Switching To A Vegan Diet – Elite Daily
In general, I consider myself to be a health-conscious person, but last year, I realized my diet needed a total overhaul.
I noticed my once refined diet had begun to slip away from me. I was content with eating meat for nearly every meal, snacking relentlessly while I worked and (worst of all) turning to fast food when I was too lazy to cook meals for myself.
But then, I had an epiphany. I decided it was time for me to make a major change.
Right around this time last year, I madethe switch toa plant-powered, all vegan diet.

I wish I could say my attempt at a vegan diet was totally successful, but there were several speed bumps along the way.
Like me, maybe you know you want to be vegan, but there are some questions you need to ask yourself in order to prepare for new vegan life.
From my experience, one thing is certain: I wish I would have made a more gradual, deliberate switch to veganism.
These questions are ones I should have asked myself beforehand.
Fortunately, you can all learn by my novice dietary mistakes:
Asking yourself this pivotal question is a somewhat vague, but its an important starting point. The most typical answer the answer is yes, a vegan diet will be healthy.
But, how you choose to navigate your vegan quest is up to you.
First off, if you have any health conditions, keep them at the forefront of your mind. For a lot of people, a vegan diet will help combat illnesses.
For example, cutting out dairy and animal products, as well as gluten and processed foods, is beneficial to many people living with celiac disease.
So, a vegan diet can offer additional health benefits to some people, beyond simply being a health-conscious diet choice.
But that being said, its important to remember you should always consult your doctor before making a diet switch, especially if you are on the fence about it.
It never hurts to double-check with a physician, nutritionist and/or dietitian.
In order to make a healthy switch to a plant-powered diet, youll want to make sure you make a gradual transition.
Most people dont find success when rapid diet change happens overnight. Instead, plan to cut out animal products systematically.
Its smart to start by cutting out just red meat or pork, then gradually stop eating poultry and finally eliminating fish from your diet.
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video
This can also be done with dairy items by cutting them out one category at a time.
When I started a vegan diet, I took the cold turkey approach. This ultimately didnt go over well.
I had intense food cravings all the time after cutting everything out at once. If I would have been more deliberate in my approach, I likely would have had a better experience changing my diet.
While theres no hard and fast rule for this, consider taking up to a few months to transition to veganism.
Change at your own speed!
There are risks with any diet change.
An article titled The Hidden Risks of Your Restricted Dietexplained,
In avoiding these foods, people on or considering vegan diets can miss out on important nutrients such as vitamin B12, calcium, iron, and zinc. Its not uncommon for vegans or vegetarians to take supplements in order to round out their diets.
Supplementing for dietary change is a fantastic idea and will eliminate some corollary risks.
Youll want to take a multivitamin if you arent already.
Take precautions to make sure you are getting enough calorie intake, as well as enough protein, and other vitamins and minerals that are mostly found in meat.
Do you meal plan? Do you ever prep out your meals? If you dont, now you certainly need to.
One of the biggest challenges for new a new vegan is knowing what to eat and just how much of it to eat.
Its normal to feel like you dont have many culinary options.
But, try not to allow yourself to feel limited. The biggest limitation to a vegan diet is your own lack of creativity!

A key to a successful vegan agenda involves constantly self-educating, experimenting and trying new foods.
When I started out, some of my all time favorite cruelty-free recipes were as follows:
Sweet and Sour Thai Noodle Salad
Glazed Lentil Walnut Loaf
BBQ Jackfruit Sandwich
Vegan Street Tacos
Vegan Kimchi
Italian Seitan Sausage
Chana Dal with Cauliflower
Teff Brownies
While vegan diets are more healthy in theory, there are plenty of people doing it wrong. Strive for a variety of fresh and raw foods, and stay away from the processed stuff as much as possible.
When I switched to a vegan diet, I was careful to heavily research foods that may contain hidden animal products.
Honestly, I was fairly paranoid I was going to mistakenly eat something with gelatin or dairy or fish oil.
After much research, I came up with a list of everyday foods that people dont realize contain animal products.
Be careful with sauces and salad dressings, as many have small amounts of animal products.
Worcestershire sauce and many other sauces have anchovy extract in them. Caesar dressing commonly contains eggs, and a lot of other salad dressing have at least some dairy in them.
Many foods unexpectedly contain gelatin. Of course, JELL-O has it, but so do most marshmallows, gummy bears and some chewing gum.
Strangely enough, packaged nuts may also contain gelatin. So, always check the ingredients list!
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video
Other foods with lurking animal ingredients are chips, cake mixes, refried beans, margarine, foods with red dye, soy and nut cheeses and certain types of sugar.
Finally, be on the lookout for drinks with small amounts of animal products.
Some brands of orange juice are boosted with omega-3s that are derived from fish.
Certain beer contains fish oil, and some wineries and breweries use a membrane called isinglass to filter their drinks. This comes from the bladders of tropical fish.
Youll want to make sure you cover all of your dietary bases. You dont want animal products to accidentally slip back into your food.
Check out PETAs Animal-Derived Ingredients List resource and the posts addition, as well as a post on TreeHugger titled 9 everyday products you didnt know had animal ingredients for more information on this.
While understanding that this may be a concern for some people, its important to remember theres no shame in a basic human function, like passing gas.
Beyond that, its also a misconception that all vegans fart more often than other people. Since vegetables and other vegan stable foods tend to be fibrous, a lot of people equate a vegan diet to farts.
Asafoetida, also known as hing, is frequently added to food as a digestive aid to help with gas and bloating.
This dried herb and its gummy secretion are used in Indian and Middle Eastern food as a flavor enhancer.
Its also a gassy vegans best friend.

NCAA March Madness Sweet 16 | The Caleb Swanigan diet | Michigan bows out – MarketWatch
If you can only squeeze in one game Thursday and you can cheat bedtime a little on a school night, the NCAA mens basketball Midwest Region matchup could bring the biggest payoff for your precious time.
Maybe thats because Purdue-Kansas features one of the biggest power forwards to ever dribble a basketball against one of the biggest college basketball dynasties.
And if you have the appetite for more, heres where and when to catch all of Thursdays games:
In the Midwest, a No. 1-seed Kansas, led by National Player of the Year favorite Frank Mason, takes on No. 4 Purdue and its own National Player of the Year candidate and Big Ten Player of the Year Caleb Swanigan, a big kid with arguably one of sweetest personal stories of the tournament.
In between dribbles, the Purdue star will seamlessly alternate between power and grace, a 6-foot-9, 249-pound forward as comfortable outside as he is around the rim, the New York Post says, adding: He makes rebounds appear to be his birthright, makes a behind-the-back pass look like someone six inches smaller threw it.
Not too many years ago, the 360-pound obese 13-year-old without much stability in his young life looked like anything but a basketball player. Except that he didnt believe that was true. And neither did his adoptive father, Roosevelt Barnes, a former NFL player and agent. First steps were off the court: getting healthy.
Rethinking Sweet: If you eat a salad and you train your taste buds to come off all that sugar, salt and fat, vegetables are sweet, Roosevelt Barnes tells the Washington Post. Romaine lettuce is sweet. Iceberg lettuce is sweet. Spinach is sweet. Cherry tomatoes are sweet.
Of course, Caleb is a kid: Yeah, there were times when he would cheat, but the thing is you have to have more days when you win than when you lose, said Barnes. And dont underestimate the healthy mindset, which by now, is all Caleb. How do you take on Kansas and, well, life? Just have to have a resilience about you, he says.
The only double-digit seed still standing: Despite Xaviers late-season buckle, this is not a true No. 11 seed, argues Sports Illustrated. Injuries left them short of a full regular starting lineup a couple of times during the season. But even at full strength, Thursdays 10 p.m. Eastern tip off against Arizona will test more than Xaviers personal belief that they truly belong in the Sweet 16. From the end of January through the second round of the NCAA tournament, few teams in the country have played as well as Arizona.
Goodnight, Cinderella: Michigan may have been the only true Cinderella team remaining, but the clock struck midnight for the Wolverines in a 69-68 loss to Oregon on Thursday night. The No. 7-seed Wolverines finished only fifth in the Big Ten, but were riding high after knocking off a national title contender in Louisville.
The Ducks win greatly pleased at least one person outside of Oregon: Las Vegas casino owner Tilman Fertitta will no longer be on the hook for a $12,500 bet on Michigan at 80-to-1 odds from rival casino owner Derek Stevens. Had Michigan won it all, the Stevens bet would have been worth a cool $1 million.
Zags zig: It wasnt pretty, but No. 1-seed Gonzaga escaped an upset bid by No. 4-seed West Virginia, winning 61-58, in the other early game. The Mountaineers, trailing by three in a game that had been dominated by defense, had a chance to tie in the closing seconds, but could not get off anything better than a desperation shot that fell short as time expired.
Later Thursday, No. 1-seed Kansas routed No. 4 Purdue, 98-66.

Diet can help springtime allergies – Fox17
Please enable Javascript to watch this video
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- It's the time of year when tissues and Claritin are front and center in stores. Before reaching for the pills, some health professionals say a diet change may help those spring-time sniffles.
Suffering from allergies and eating on-the-go could probably be the worst thing you can do if you're suffering from allergies here in West Michigan. Kelly Hassberger, a naturopathic doctor at Grand Rapids Natural Health explains,Spring is probably the worst of it because we have the freeze, and then everything blooms and things come out all at once.
Basically, it's an "allergy tsunami" every spring. While that idea may spark feelings of stuffy noses and runny eyes, Hassberger says the tummy is what people should treat first.
What a lot of people dont know, is that 80% of your immune system actually lives in your GI (gastrointestinal) track, which is one of the areas that we abuse often with foods that we eat.
Tracy's food choices aren't great for allergies.
Some of us are more guilty of eating poorly than others...especially when you love all things cheese. But cheese could cause big problems when it comes to your sinuses.
Dairy, like yogurt, is actually a really heavy mucous producing food," explains Hassberger. "If youre in the middle of an allergy flare and you eat a lot of cheese or yogurt or milk etc., it can actually worsen your symptoms.
If limiting dairy by trying alternative products, Hassberger says to check the label before you buy. Some brands use milk products, but are labeled as vegetarian.
Key ingredients in over-the-counter allergy medicines like antihistamines and anti-inflammatories can be found naturally in foods like oranges, peppers, broccoli and kale. Hassberger warns you not to expect to eat one serving of those and feel better right away though. It takes a while to get your body up to allergy-fighting speed.
If you think about eating those foods year-round and you start pumping your body full of vitamin C and nutrients, or you start supporting your body overall and decreasing inflammation over all, then you might find that the next allergy season, your allergy symptoms are better, in general.

TV Is Going on a Diet – Vanity Fair
Its Wednesday, and my butt wont fit in any skinny bundles.
Hello from Los Angeles, where were scrutinizing our cable bills, waiting for Jim Gianopuloss car to drive through the Paramount gates, and handing out barf bags at the Nuart.

Every month I pay a DirecTV bill roughly equivalent to the G.D.P. of Samoa for the handful of channels I watch most oftenHBO, TCM, FX, Bravo, and HGTV. My husband also watches a lot of sports and cable news, so we also pay for a bunch of channels where guys in fitted suits yell at each other. Along the way come freeloaders we dont ever watchsorry, Golf Channel. But that might change soon. Both Variety and The Wall Street Journal published in-depth, data-driven reports this week about how these kinds of giant cable packages are going on a diet, as media companies shut down the niche networks with smaller audiences to trim costs, and cable companies try to hold onto consumers deserting them for cheaper streaming services. Journal reporters Shalini Ramachandran and Keach Hagey analyzed the financial and viewership information for more than 100 TV networks, and found within some downright bargainsthe Hallmark Channel, for instance, is super-cheap for cable operators to carry considering the giant audience it brings in for its feel-good original movies. MTV Classic, meanwhile, is priced well above retail.
Matthew Broderick in The Cable Guy, 1996.
From Columbia/Everett Collection.
In a slightly more wonkish Variety cover story on the same phenomenon, Cynthia Littleton and Daniel Holloway quote Turner Broadcasting distribution president Coleman Breland on the effect niche channels have on the marketplace. So many of these networks do less than 100,000 viewers in total-day average; there just arent enough eyeballs to support them, Breland said. But theyre taking money out of the ecosystem. The Variety piece also has an exhaustive, color-coded chart that lays out all five of the slimmed-down cable options currently available. Alas, none contains the precise collection of shows I watch, so Ill just keep shaking my fist at the sky every month when my bill comes.
Complaining about your cable/satellite bill is, of course, a long-standing consumer practice. (If youre wondering what a cable bill is, its the thing your parents pay so you can have their HBOGo password.) Which is why I found this one little statistic in a Morning Consult study out this morning on the future of TV so interesting: 80 percent of Americans have a favorable view of Netflix, the biggest name in streaming, vs. 43 percent who have a favorable view of Xfinity, the biggest name in cable/satellite. Buffer that news.
The Motion Picture Association of America released its 2016 Theatrical Market Statistics report today, and there are some interesting nuggets in here. Overall, global box office grew 1 percent to $38.6 billion, while the market in the U.S. and Canada rose 2 percent to $11.4 billion. The average cinema ticket price in the U.S. increased by 22 cents to $8.65 in 2016, and moviegoing in the U.S. essentially stayed steady, with 1.32 billion tickets sold. Still, the M.P.A.A. wants us to know, Movie theaters continue to draw more people than all theme parks and major U.S. sports combined.
One thing that stands out is that per capita attendance is up among non-white audiences. The group the M.P.A.A. classifies as Asians/Other Ethnicities reported the highest annual attendance per capita, going to the cinema an average of 6.1 times in the year. And the movie that drew the most ethnically diverse audience, the M.P.A.A. says, was Disneys live action Jungle Book remake, a big-screen spectacle that starred an Indian-American newcomer (Neel Sethi) and an international cast of voice actors including Idris Elba, Bill Murray, Lupita Nyongo, Scarlett Johansson, and Ben Kingsley. Two other Disney movies, Finding Dory and Captain America: Civil War, were next in line. I can tell you categorically that there is an effort to provide more diversity and inclusion in the creation of content, M.P.A.A. chief Chris Dodd said on a conference call about the data. Theres no question in my mind the message has been received [by the studios].
After a two-week courtship, Paramount Pictures and former Fox chairman Jim Gianopulos appear close to making their match official. The negotiations for the man the town knows as Jim G to take the top Paramount job have played out in the trades with increasing breathlessness. Will he or wont he?! Gianopuloss insistence on autonomy in greenlighting has been a sticking point for Via, according to multiple outlets. The Hollywood Reporters Kim Masters and Gregg Kilday quote multiple sources saying the parties are closer together than ever now, writing, Viacom is now offering Gianopulos greenlight authority for films with budgets up to about $100 million or perhaps more, ensuring that he can operate without a greenlight committee except for the most expensive movies.

Even smaller-scale dramas are getting in on the Game of Thrones and Walking Deadesque secret-keeping. Until she cropped up unexpectedly in Tuesday nights episode of FXs The Americans, the fate of Alison Wrights much-abused secretary Martha Hanson was up in the air. In an interview, Wright told us that, like Thrones star Kit Harington and The Walking Deads Steven Yeun before her, shes been endlessly hounded with questions since the day Martha disappeared last season. Martha isnt a typical hero like Jon Snow or Glenn Rhee, but Wright explains the allure of her low-level F.B.I. employee: Shes what all of us would most likely be in this scenario. Wed like to think that wed be the Jenningsthat wed be badasses. But the likelihood is that wed be the Martha. This is a huge week for Wright, who also makes her Broadway debut in Sweat and steals the show on this Sundays Feud. In other words, never count a Martha out.
VF.coms Yohana Desta e-mails:
Raw, French director Julia Ducournaus bloody drama, is making quite a name for itself. The gory cannibal film, about a girl whose palate shifts to something more carnivorous (a.k.a. human flesh), made headlines when it was reported some filmgoers at the Toronto International Film Festival gagged and passed out during screening due to the movies graphic content. Paramedics had to be called intwice. But never fear, the Nuart Theatre in Los Angeles has come up with a fun way to ease queasy viewers: handing out custom-made barf bags, of course. Pamela McClintock of The Hollywood Reporter writes that a staff member at the Nuart thought it would be fun to make barf bags out of paper lunch bags, and pass them out right before a screening. Just in case. Imagine the pure horror of someone who decided to blindly go into a Raw screening, only to later be approached by an usher wielding a barf bag and going, Hereyou might need this.

Woman with Endometriosis Says She No Longer Needs a Hysterectomy After Changing Her Diet – PEOPLE.com
Jessica Murnane suffers from stage four endometriosis, and was told at the age of 33 that she would need to undergo a hysterectomy.
As a last-ditch effort to save my uterus, I decided to try a whole-foods plant-based diet, Murnane writes in Tuesdays Lenny Letter newsletter. Aside from the fact that candy, cheese and fun were not on the approved list of foods, I think a lot of my resistance came from just being plain tired of trying.
Over the years, I had tried everything to feel better, she continues. I went through multiple surgeries, tried yoga, experimented with legal drugs and not-so-legal ones, and even went to therapy because of my depression caused by my pain. Nothing worked.
Naturally, Murnane was skeptical that cutting out junk food and focusing on a plant-based diet would actually make a difference but she says for her, it did.
To my surprise (Im still surprised), it actually worked, she writes. After weeks, my symptoms and pain started to fade. And after a couple of months, I felt better than I ever had. I never got the surgery.Six years later, Icant imagine eating any other way. Good food changed my life.
Gynecological surgeon Ceana Nezhat,MD, FACOG, FACS, fellowship director of the Atlanta Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery and Reproductive Medicine, says that improved diet can alleviate endometriosis symptoms for some women.
Changing yourlifestyle and certain eating habits has a significant, positive effect on severeendometriosis, he tells PEOPLE. Apatient of mine had a similar situation and was offered a hysterectomy. She came to me, and not only did she not have surgery,[but changing her diet]helped her conceive as well.
Cate Shanahan, MD, a Connecticut-based board certified family physician and author of Deep Nutrition, explains that there is indeed a link between diet and endometriosis symptoms.
There is a relationship between diet and pretty much all chronic conditions and certainly hormonal issues, Shanahan tells PEOPLE. The link in all of this is the fact that omega-6 fats, which come from soy oil and canola oil and are also found in animal feed, are pro-inflammatory.
She explains that by eliminating meat and processed foods, you are cutting back on omega-6 fats, which can help with endometriosis symptoms.
There is definitely a direct reason why you would expect someone to be able to improve their endometriosis if they improve theirdiet, she says. One of my patients who suffers from endometriosis got better with diet change, so I have seen it happen.
RELATED VIDEO:Halsey Opens Up About Endometriosis Battle
Ken Sinervo, MD, MSc, FRCSC, ACGE, medical director of Atlantas Center for Endometriosis Care, says that while changing a diet can alleviate symptoms of endometriosis, it will not eliminate it.
The disease is not going to go away with diet alone, he tells PEOPLE. The most effective way of treating endometriosis is with excision or cutting out the disease. That being said, we know that diet can affect many of the symptoms of endometriosis. There are a lot phytoestrogens in certain types of food, especially foods that have soy as their basis, which can result in inflammation. Sugars, carbohydrates and processed meats can also increase inflammation and make symptoms worse.
Sinervo says that Murnanes situation is the exception rather than the rule.
There is a very strict endometriosis diet which eliminates most meat and is largely plant-based, but the diet is extremely limited, he says. I had one patient who did it for 10 years, and it did seem to help to her symptoms, but eventually her symptoms became worse again and she did need surgery.
Rebecca Brightman, MD, FACOG, a board certified OBGYN in private practice in New York City and educationalpartner with the ME in EndoMEtriosis campaign, which encourages women to get educated about the disease, says its imperative for women to seek professional medical advice before trying to self-treat their endometriosis with diet.
Everybodys different, and no one really knows why some people have endometriosis and other people dont, Brightman tells PEOPLE. There is some thought that eating natural foods and clean foods may actually help people feel better. There is also some data that suggests that people that avoid alcohol and caffeine may improve their symptoms. However, it depends on the severity of the symptoms. The care has to be individualized.
People need to talk to their health care providers, she continues. Traditional treatment is medical therapy, surgical treatment or a combination of the two.It would be really unfortunate for someone who can benefit from medical treatment to self-treat.

Expert Reveals The Popular Diet Tricks That Actually Make You Gain Weight – Elite Daily
Dieting is hard.
Sure, itmight be the most obvious statement since Trumps declared the health care system to be complicated, but it doesnt make it any less true.
Its hard enough to keep yourself motivated and on track when it comes to dieting, but whats even more difficult is separating fact from fiction when youre looking up the best health tips out there.

According to nutritionist Rhiannon Lambert, several of the most common diet tricks people useturn out to bepretty detrimental to their efforts to lose weight, and even their overall health.
Here are some of the most popular dieting habits out there, and the real scoop on what theyre actually doing to your body:
According to FitDay, skipping a meal can result in decreased energy levels, lowered nutrition and even serve as a gateway to other poor dietary habits.
Plus, our parents werent lying to us when they said breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Skipping thatfirst meal has been linked to weight gain, according to a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology in 2003.

Despite the popularity of sports drinks like Gatorade and Powerade, these beverages actually tend to put more calories into the body than what was just burned off duringthe workout, MailOnline reports.
These types of drinks should be saved for endurance exercises like running a marathon, rather than a quick trip to the gym.
As a rule of thumb, CamelBak has a great calculator for your hydration needs, which are dependent on things like your gender, age, weight, activity level, etc.
So many people believe calorie counting is the cornerstone of any effective diet.
While theyre definitely important to monitor, calories arent the end all, be all to a healthy lifestyle.
Two foods can easily have a similar or even equivalent calorie count, but it doesnt mean they provide the same type of nutrients for your body.
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video
Plus, as Olumia Life points out, the psychological aspect of counting calories can be really detrimental.
If you look at your diet as a number of calories you cant ever go over, then you tend to (falsely) think of all foods, even the junkier ones, as fine, as long as they dont push you over the limit.
Foods labeled fat-free obviously sound like a good idea on the surface, but a closer look at the nutrition label will likely reveal the unfortunate truth about them.
In order to make up for the lack of fat (which usually alsomeans lack of taste), food manufacturers will often compensate by adding more sugar, salt and other artificial ingredients to improve the flavor.

Red meat is one of those frustrating foods the experts cant seem to agree on.
Its good for you, its bad for you which is it, exactly?!
According to an article in Authority Nutrition, its important to distinguish between different types of red meat. Grass-fed and organic meat, for instance, is very different from factory-farmed, processed meat.
Overall, a consensus seems to suggest as long as youre eating unprocessed red meat and avoiding any burnt or charred pieces, youre probably in the clear.
Supplements are great, but most experts seem to agree these should never replaceactual food.
No matter how many benefits a supplement claims to offer, it will never replace a healthy lifestyle, which should include real meals, regular exercise and good sleeping patterns.

Amanda Stone: Iron-rich diet can be plant-based – Joplin Globe
Recently, as I lay on a comfortable, vinyl-covered recliner while I donated blood, a phlebotomist well-versed in distraction regaled me with tales of blood donors past. I was particularly taken with the story of a man in his early 80s who is closing in on his 31st gallon. I was in awe, seeing as how I started donating later in life and am still working toward my first gallon.
When you donate whole blood, its one pint at a time. There are eight pints in a gallon. You can only donate whole blood every eight weeks. You do the math. Its possible I could make it to 31 gallons, but Im going to have to stay on a strict donation schedule. Also, math isnt my strong suit.
The need for blood is constant, and if you meet the criteria (I was rejected once for admitting to rogue acupuncture in a friends basement), donating is a fairly easy way to help save a life. Plus, you get a mini checkup each time; they check your blood pressure, pulse, temperature and hemoglobin, and within a few days, youll know your cholesterol level, too. With Community Blood Center of the Ozarks in a permanent location at Northpark Mall, theres not a lot of effort involved. Pop in, donate, then relax with free snacks. And CBCO offers Life Points, which accrue with each donation, earning you gift cards to restaurants and stores. Free snacks, free money and sometimes even free T-shirts. I cant wait to go again.
With this very-attainable goal comes great responsibility. My blood needs to stay in tip-top condition, which means continuing with an iron-rich, nutritious diet and drinking plenty of water, especially in the two days before donation time.
The American Red Cross recommends eating a nutritious, light meal a couple of hours before donating, which means avoiding fatty foods that can affect tests for infections done on blood.
Eating an iron-rich diet doesnt have to mean all meat all the time, and spinach is good but not Popeye-good. Iron found in meat, fish, poultry and eggs is most readily absorbed by the body, but plant-based sources of iron such as fruits, vegetables and nuts are good, too. However, they need to be eaten with foods rich in vitamin C in order for the iron to be absorbed best. Think strawberry spinach salad or black bean salsa with tomatoes and peppers. Dark chocolate is a decent source of iron as well the darker the better.
Try these recipes to get you and your blood up to par for your next donation. All recipes from http://www.eatingwell.com.
Almond- and lemon-crusted fish with spinach
Zest and juice of one lemon, divided
1/2 cup sliced almonds, coarsely chopped
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh dill or 1 teaspoon dried
1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
1 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
Freshly ground pepper to taste
11/4 pounds cod or halibut, cut into 4 portions
4 teaspoons Dijon mustard
2 cloves garlic, slivered
1 pound baby spinach
Preheat oven to degrees. Coat a rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray. Combine lemon zest, almonds, dill, 1 tablespoon oil, 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper in a small bowl. Place fish on the prepared baking sheet and spread each portion with 1 teaspoon mustard.
Divide the almond mixture among the portions, pressing it onto the mustard. Bake the fish until opaque in the center, about seven to nine minutes, depending on thickness. Meanwhile, heat the remaining 2 teaspoons oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. Add garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant but not brown, about 30 seconds. Stir in spinach, lemon juice and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt; season with pepper.
Cook, stirring often, until the spinach is just wilted, two to four minutes. Cover to keep warm. Serve the fish with the spinach and lemon wedges, if desired.

1/4 cup water
2 mangos, peeled and sliced
1 bunch scallions, cut into 1-inch pieces

Basil, shrimp and zucchini pasta
1/2 cup chopped fresh basil leaves, divided
1 8-ounce can tomato sauce
2 teaspoons plus 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, divided
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper, or more to taste

2 cups orecchiette or other small pasta, preferably whole-wheat
2 medium zucchini or summer squash or 1 of each
Combine 1/4 cup basil, tomato sauce, 2 teaspoons oil, garlic, salt, pepper and cayenne in a medium bowl. Stir in shrimp; let stand for at least 10 minutes and up to 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, cook pasta in a large pan of boiling water until just tender, eight to 11 minutes or according to package directions. Drain. Quarter squash lengthwise and cut into 1/4-inch-thick slices.
Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking. Add the shrimp mixture along with the squash. Cook, stirring, until the shrimp are pink and just barely cooked through, three to four minutes.

Why is your diet not working? – Thegardenisland.com
Almost everyone tries dieting at least a few times in their life.
Maybe youre successful and you lose weight, but then you gain it all back again. Or maybe you just tried for a few days and didnt see any results. Maybe you even spent a lot of money on diet supplements or coaching.
If it didnt work, then now what?
First, you need to understand why it did not work. If youre just dieting for a short time, with the goal of losing five or 10 pounds, then that can work. But if you need to lose 20 or 30 or 50 pounds, then you need more than just to change what you eat, because ultimately you wont be able to stick to that. Instead, you need a strategy to support you changing your lifestyle. This is the subject for a different article! But for now, lets say you want to do a short-term diet, but its not working the way you want what are you doing wrong, or whats missing?
Probably, you do not have a structured plan, and you are not tracking your progress.
You need an eating plan so that you know you are eating enough vegetables, protein and fruits. I suggest you make a list of what youll need to eat the following week. Lets say youre starting your diet on a Monday. In that case, on the Friday before you start, make your shopping list and then go shopping for all the ingredients that youll need. Remember why you are doing this you want to be healthy, and its your choice to go on this diet.
Your focus should be on nutrient dense food, not on how many calories you are consuming. Yes, of course calories do matter, but if you push too hard too soon then its likely that youll fail on your diet, and sooner or later, youll give up and eat more.
So instead, focus on nourishing your body with a variety of food sources such as different colored vegetables, fruits, and different sources of lean protein.
The key is that you do your shopping and prepare your meals beforehand, so that when you need to eat, everything is ready.
The second most important thing is to track your weight every day. Yes, every day. This will help you to understand whether you are following an eating plan that is correct for you, or whether you need to adjust your diet. Write down your weight somewhere that you can easily see it maybe a piece of paper on your fridge. Remember that its just a number, but it will help you to understand how close you are to reaching your health goals.
Ask for support from your family and your friends. Tell them how important it is for you, and they will help you with your progress.
Remember, without a map you will probably get lost. But with a well-designed map or plan you will gain your health back and you will lose weight. And this success will mean much more than just losing weight, it will give you confidence, a feeling of accomplishment, and its an important step towards creating a new healthy you with healthy eating habits.
