Jason Wang Craves Spicy Nuggets and Roast Duck – Grub Street
Jason Wang dreams of roast duck. Illustration: Lindsay Mound
When Jason Wangs father, David Shi, opened the first XiAn Famous Foods in 2005, it was an anonymous stall in the shabby, labyrinthine basement of Flushings now-closed Golden Shopping Mall. In the 15 years since, Wang has taken over the business as CEO and, working with his father, helped turn it into one of this citys great success stories and an iconic New York business, loved for its food and tingly, spicy trademark sauce. This week, Wang published the XiAn Famous Foods cookbook, with recipes for signature dishes like liangpi. While Wang misses the excitement and discovery of the early days, he doesnt mind that XiAn is no longer the new kid on the block. Ive said this to other folks, one of my biggest goals is to just make this into a century old business. So when Im not around the next generation is able to take it on, he says. This week, Wang went on TV for a virtual noodle lesson to promote the book, and stir-fried scrambled eggs with tomatoes for breakfast in his new apartment.
Wednesday, October 7I am not a morning person. I know a lot of successful people who can get up early and have so much energy. Im just not. But I had to get up at 4:30 a.m., and the reason was to share the magic of pulling noodles on Good Morning America! Luckily, I stayed over at my fathers house the hardworking crew got up even earlier to make their way over. There was equipment setup for an hour or two, while my father and I prepared the foods to showcase and I went to a corner to go over the question and answers.
After pulling noodles virtually over Zoom with Amy Robach and Michael Strahan live, it was a wrap. I was pretty drained. I dont know how people do this every day this early. Shout-out to the editing that made me look good!
As the filming wrapped, I took a couple of bites of a big bowl of Spicy & Tingly beef noodles that I had made for the segment. My stomach was still asleep, so I didnt eat much, though it looked and tasted great!
After moving some furniture back into place and cleaning up the kitchen, I made my way back to my apartment in Long Island City. The emails were starting to pile up, so I answered as many as I could. Then, I set a timer for five hours, and went to bed.
Woke up in the late afternoon, answered some more emails, and ordered a Diavola pizza from Luzzo nearby. I usually like to sprinkle a shit ton of chili flakes on my pizza, but the chili flakes I have dont taste spicy on the tongue, so I settled for some sriracha. Its thin crust and pretty traditional. Im not a very picky eater, but I do enjoy good food.
I scarfed down a few slices before wiping myself off, and ran over to Raines Law Room to have a few drinks and catch up with an old friend, Yami, who was visiting from Miami. We met back in the South Beach Wine and Food Festival years ago. She was a student at Florida International University and was assisting me. We chatted over the culinary journeys weve been on over some old-fashioneds and some bees knees. She promised me a can of her newest cold brew, while I promised to share my supplier pricing.
I like Raines. They make good drinks. Its a good ambiance, and it was close to my office, which is why it was my choice to go. Its good for happy hour and, later, night chats with friends. For me, NYC is full of great bars, and why there? Its just a little bit more convenient. Its not super-high traffic like some of the East Village places that you cant get into unless you wait for an hour or two. I try to bypass that. The same with food. I love great food; I love great drinks; I just cant deal with waiting because I have too much to do. I dont have time. I wish I did.
Thursday, October 8I got up and went straight into a call into Department of Health to contest a violation we received a while back before the pandemic that we didnt seem to have gotten a notice for. We missed the hearing and received a default judgement.
We realized this when collection calls started and requested to contest it. But since its COVID era, the hearings are all virtual. So, basically, we would have to call in on a specific day and wait for a judge to hear our case. We were accused of not having posted the required nutritional information at our Brooklyn store (we do and did) because we were a chain (technically we arent, because we have fewer than 15 locations).
This was the second violation of this kind that I have contested recently not sure why the inspectors dont notice our signage in our stores Anyways, I waited two hours on the line, couldnt go anywhere, and was worried about hanging up and trying again, because the instructions explicitly said not to do that. But, after holding off as long as I could, I had to head out to the office. So I asked my staff to take care of it shouldnt be a hard case to present (For the record, after three hours, they were eventually able to get through to someone before their workday was over).
I really wanted McDs spicy chicken nuggets. The sauce is where its at. But no time! I had to head over to the city to show a couple of apartments in the building above our newly opened Chelsea location (we own the building) to prospective tenants.
I went through phases with American food. When I first got to the U.S., I was like, I cant stand this food. Theres no good food anywhere. I really need some home-cooked meals. Back when I was a kid in China, there was only KFC. But I never had KFC in XiAn, I dont know why; it was too fancy. After I moved to Michigan, I remember the allure of McDonalds was really the happy meal. The food was just eh. But eventually I tried some of the fries, and McDonalds does have good fries. I started eating those, and I started getting used to the weird onion taste on the cheeseburger. Same with pizza. We had Godfathers pizza in Michigan, and whenever Id walk into one of those places after we moved, I was about to throw up because of that sauce smell. I was not used to it. Now its delicious.
More and more, I think I have nostalgia even for things I didnt like. For example: pickles. I hated pickles. I was like, What is this dill taste? When I was a kid in Michigan playing with friends, one of the parents would come out with a big jar of pickles, and everyone went crazy while I was like, Why? Now every time I see a pickle I think of those fun summer days, and I started appreciating it. I like pickles now. I have an international stomach if that makes sense.
After the showings, I realized once again that I hadnt eat for the whole day. But by this time, Id already starved myself long enough to the point where I didnt feel that hungry anymore (but I knew my body was hungry). In these circumstances, I typically like something a bit lighter. So I went to Sobaya in the East Village. It was a bit chilly so I got a hot, soupy curry soba with extra noodles. That warmed me right up and was not too heavy.
As I was finishing my meal, I saw my good friend Sakura Yagi of TIC Group, which owns pretty much every Japanese establishment on 9th Street. We quickly caught up about family and, of course, discussed a bit about our outlooks on indoor dining and the challenges that await the restaurant industry in the coming days. Shes one of the few people I actually connect with even after all these years about the industry.
Sobaya is also near our St. Marks Place location, which is the one I feel most connected to because I have spent so much time there. (Im not as tied to the East Village one, for example.) I used to work there every day day till night.
During the time I was working at the St. Marks Place location, I was figuring out, in a personal way, how to be a contributing person in this business as opposed to just standing around and doing odd jobs. Blood has literally been spilled at that location. It was a crazy time. There were drunk people fighting. That was a common occurrence. A guy once took a piss on the front of the store. I was protective of it, so I was telling him to leave. There were three of them, and they started a fight with me, so I just punched one of them in the head. We were starting to fight on the ground when the next door neighbor came out and broke it up. I appreciated that guys help because it was three guys and just me. I probably would not have done very well.
Later that day, I got back home and remembered that Gold House (promoting gold opens for Asian American films like Crazy Rich Asians) had sent a courtesy pass to an online screening of Yellow Rose, so I thought I would finish the night with that. The film is about an undocumented Filipina teen in Texas. After losing her mother to ICE, she finds a sense of belonging through country music. I have to say, I really enjoy country music. I also enjoy films that show the good in people. After watching the movie, I realized I was hungry again, so I had some Samyang spicy chicken instant ramen. Not healthy, but I enjoy the burn!
Friday, October 9After running errands during the day, I went to Elmhurst to get pho at Pho Bac. Pho is something I have once a week. I think this has been a habit since 2014 or 2015, when I first moved to LIC.
The soup has to be piping hot and the MSG has to be there. I get the huo che tou which is basically the works (rare beef, tripe, tendons, etc.). I always keep a small container of the chili garlic sauce (for the tart chili garlic taste) mixed with sriracha (for added spiciness and fragrance). The trick is not to put the sauce into the soup! Itll be too spicy! Use the soup spoon to get some noodles and meat, then use the chopsticks to scoop a little bit of chili sauce. Mix it in, and eat that bite. Similarly, you shouldnt mix wasabi into the soy sauce for sashimi. You just take a little bit of wasabi and rub it onto the meat. Then, dip the meat into the soy sauce. Same idea really.
Did I mention I was moving? Yes. After shooting on Wednesday, I was able to start packing to move to Manhattan. I have never lived in Manhattan before, so its very exciting for me! I borrowed a van from XFF to start moving stuff over. Saying goodbye to an elevator building in LIC and moving to a walk-up is going to take some getting used to.
I got home close to midnight and needed some dinner. I blanched some choy sum and dripped on some oyster sauce. I also had some roast duck I picked up from Five Loaves and Two Fishes. It reminds of these places that were popping up 20 years ago in Flushing the kinds of places that just served four dishes with one soup over rice. Cheap, boxed-lunch places. That was the fad. There arent many left, except in pockets of Chinatown. You can get a quick meal and roast duck, another favorite food of mine.
The spices rubbed onto the inside of the duck are so flavorful, and I always ask for extra of the dark stew sauce. I just wish the duck was less fatty, so much fat to throw out every time (usually toward the tail end), but I remind myself, Thats how ducks stay afloat. They are fatty. They cant help it.
I didnt grow up eating roast duck in China. I only had it after moving to Flushing when I was a teenager. Because my father worked in restaurants, hed get exposed to different cuisines pretty often. Duck is the sort of food hed pick up on his way home from working out of state, because he wouldnt have time to cook. Hed just grab some roast duck and give it to me or hed leave some in the fridge. It lasts for days.
Saturday, October 10For breakfast I had this Post Honey Maid cereal with mini smores. I know its not healthy, but I have a bit of a sweet tooth in the morning. Its simple and fast. I used to eat like a slice of Fay Da chocolate cake with soy milk every morning before going to the store. Cereal is something that came into my life when I was growing up in Michigan. Back then, it was cereal every morning. Sometimes I just need something in my stomach so I dont pass out. The problem with me is that, for instance, when I see a bunch of emails, I dont try to deal with them one by one. I try to do them all at once. I do them for hours.
After packing as much as I could into boxes, I Postmated a couple of Shake Shack single burgers with spicy fries. I like it with some extra ketchup and Tabasco habanero!
After I moved everything into the new place, all the restaurants were pretty much already closed, so I went to my fail-safe: Papa Johns pizza with buffalo wings. I watched some episodes of Blacklist on Netflix.
Sunday, October 11I finally got to cook. Just some quick tomatoes and eggs with some leftover rice for breakfast. Its one of the simpler bachelor dishes there is. Its just scrambled eggs with some scallions, tomatoes, soy sauce, salt, and sugar. Usually I eat it for dinner or lunch, not breakfast.
I ate that on the stepladder while watching Blacklist. I am thinking theres some plot twist coming about the demise of a certain character this season we will see.
Another day of moving. A lot of back and forth. I didnt think I had that much stuff! By the end of the day, my fingers were giving out. I cooked some hong shao braised pork spare ribs, the same recipe that is in my cookbook. But this time I added a little twist: I put in some sichuan pixian bean sauce and some dry chilis. This gave it a bit of a kick and a more reddish color. I ate that with some rice and baby spinach sauted with garlic.
I had to be ready to meet with my dad on Monday. I cant get away from him. In pre-COVID times, wed usually get dim sum on Saturday mornings, like a working lunch. I like to go to Asian Jewels a lot because its pretty big and pretty convenient. My father has other favorites, but I always drag him over there. We used to have a store across the street, so its a little nostalgic for me because its where we used to meet to take a break.
Whenever theres a lot of stuff going on, were always meeting. He likes to meet in person because we get in arguments on the phone. We both have pretty loud and aggressive voices, so we always feel like we are screaming at each other. In person, its a little more benign though we still have screaming matches sometimes. Were discussing our Financial District location, which, unfortunately, were likely going to vacate at the end of the month. The Financial District is just a ghost town, and we cannot stay there anymore. Well also talk about important stuff: meal kits, delivering liang pi around the city.
Sometimes he puts me in an awkward position. He just wants things to be better, but that can throw people off. We recently improved our recipes for our spinach dumplings, so the filling is more tasty. The skin is supposed to be thinner; its not as doughy anymore. Its supposed to be a kind of hearty bite. He made some adjustments to make it a little better, and I didnt know he did that. So he just told the team that makes the dumplings, and then I get emails from people like, Hey what happened with the dumplings? How come theyre so different? People are creatures of habit. I asked him, What happened? What did you do? And he told me, and I was like, Cant you just give me a heads up, so I know sometimes? And he said, What? I just made it better. I didnt think thatd be a problem. Its not as crazy as him launching new menus without telling me. He waits for me to travel internationally to do that so I dont have any control.

Theres a Major ‘Shark Tank’ Keto Pill Scam You Need to Know About – GoodHousekeeping.com
Shark Tank has been a platform for thousands upon thousands of products, some of which the series' diehard fans would say seem almost too good to be true. The major commercial success associated with the show (which Inc. reports can be worth double or triple a company's revenue in a single year) has pushed more inventors, brands, and businesses to seek endorsement from one of the shows' stars. And when a product is just too outlandish to appear on the show, some entrepreneurs will simply fake an endorsement which is the case for a whole suite of Ketogenic diet products, including some of which actually steal Lori Grenier's image to be used on social media.
As reported by fact checkers at Snopes.com, there have been many digital advertisements for Keto diet pills that purport that the product has appeared on Shark Tank. Some even claim to have been funded or personally endorsed by the business moguls featured on Shark Tank while pitching on the show. The pills are billed as a supplement to help boost weight loss for those working their way through the Keto diet, a targeted program that pushes one's metabolism to process fat (or, to reach ketosis) as the main source of energy, as opposed to carbohydrates like sugar.
But viewers may be surprised to learn that there have only been a few instances when a Keto-related product has crossed the Shark Tank stage and none have ever secured an investment from one of the show's main "Sharks."
A brand called Nui first appeared on Shark Tank in 2018 to seek investment in their Keto-friendly cookie product that skipped added sugar but doubled down on saturated fats. During the episode, guest investor and sports icon Alex Rodriguez ended up sinking a $300,000 investment into the cookie, according to CNBC. In another episode in 2018, a brand known as the Honest Keto Diet tried seeking investment for a supplement that supposedly helped Keto dieters maintain ketosis without strictly observing required sugar limitations that the diet is famous for. The product didn't earn an investment from any of the show's stars, but blogs like The Health Radar believe the appearance allowed fraudulent businesses to start pedaling fake ads.

Fake advertisements for "Shark Tank Keto pills" have even caught the eye of the Better Business Bureau, as officials found that one product used images "taken from a separate Shark Tank episode that does not mention PureFit KETO. "Some advertisements have even gone as far to manipulate images of Greiner, the "Queen of QVC' television personality who has funded more than 35 new businesses and products on Shark Tank alone, per her website.
How widespread are these advertisements, you might wonder? They're big enough of a problem for Grenier to appeal to her social media followers to ask them to stop buying any products associated with the Keto diet claiming to have her endorsement. She also appeared on an episode of The Dr. Oz Show to address the scam once and for all, alongside a Federal Bureau of Investigation cybersecurity agent and Dr. Oz himself, who has been the source of a few fake ads as well.
This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.
"They take our images and they Photoshop our product into their hands, and they make it like we are endorsing or are behind these products, but we are not," Grenier said in a video posted to her social accounts. "I have never done a Keto or diet product, ever."
Keto diet pills have been the subject of many shopping scams (Chrissy Teigen recently shut one down publicly on Twitter) over the years. If you should come across an advertisement floating a Keto product featured on Shark Tank, it probably hasn't ever appeared on the show or earned any endorsement. The Snopes team says these Keto advertisements often allow scammers to participate in something called "dropshipping," which allows them to earn money by getting shoppers to order often questionable products from suppliers directly, earning a commission-like fee in the process. If you're truly interested in hearing more about the Keto diet and how it may help you manage your weight, start by learning about the diet's rules and how it works and consider a meal plan to begin before discussing long term changes to your diet with your doctor.

Diet Coke lets people reward unsung pandemic heroes with a year of free soda – Marketing Dive
Dive Brief:
As the pandemic grinds on, with COVID-19 cases again climbing, Diet Coke is looking to reward people who are striving through an exhausting situation. The sweepstakes allows fans and followers to spotlight everyday people who they view as heroes of the health crisis, including those directly combating the virus or helping to keep families and students engaged.
To enter an everyday boss for a chance to win free soda for a year, users can visit the contest website, enter their nominee's name and contact information and write a short blurb on why they think their hero is worthy. The pay-it-forward aspect to the campaign could resonate at a time when many consumers remain physically distanced and are hungry for a sense of community. It also mirrors promotions from Coke's competitors. Last year around the holidays, chief rival Pepsi ran a mobile-focused campaign that let participants dole out cash rewards to friends and loved ones as part of their seasonal gift-giving.
Diet Coke continues to build on "Drink it Up," which launched near the start of the year, before the virus started to shut down operations in the U.S. A big piece of the brand's 2020 platform is showing support for unappreciated people, including mothers, with video spots centered on the subject.
Coca-Cola froze much of its marketing spend at the outset of the health crisis, but the sweepstakes represents the type of mobile- and digital-oriented outreach the company could be putting a bigger focus on as it ramps investments back up heading into the key fourth quarter and holiday sales period. Coke could also be looking to fortify its core brands as niche beverage offerings struggle during the pandemic.
The marketer is realigning its portfolio in significant ways, and will sunset Tab, the beverage first made famous in the 1970s, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday. After losing the mainstream appeal of its heyday, Coke's first diet cola offering still commanded a loyal following, but has become another victim of the health crisis.
Coke enacted a broad corporate restructuring in August, culling its total business units from 17 down to nine. It also plans to cut its body of 500 brands by more than half to center focus on the labels that can best meet the demands of a fast-changing pandemic market.

Keto is Most Searched Diet of 2020. Here’s How to Make it Healthy – The Beet
Despite the fact that it's hard to sustain and requires dieters to eat copious amounts of meat and dairy, Keto is the most searched diet of the year, with over 25.4 million google searches so far, according to a new survey just released, while Intermittent Fasting is second, with 11.7 million searches and Paleo is third with 3.8 million searches. Meanwhile, the percentage of Americans who are dieting has risen to 58 percent, and 32 percent of those have tried more than three different diets, according to the research. Social media is the first place dieters turn for motivation on their weight-loss journey (62 percent) and then their partners (54 percent) and family members (51 percent), according to the research from Ahrefs, Golfsupport.com.
Meanwhile in another survey just released, the top goals people are pursuing during "quarantine" include: Eat healthier or follow a diet (57 percent); Work out and exercise more (56 percent); Have a more positive attitude (53 percent), according to research by OnePoll for Nutrisystem, which found that 53 percent of the 2,000 respondents said they would be more likely to fail a diet or exercise routine if they pursued these goals alone.
Following a healthy or plant-based keto plan is possible, according to experts, but most people do a keto diet by eating a preponderance of red or processed meats, making it one of the least heart-healthy approaches to weight loss. While individuals don't all lose weight the same way, doctors warn that eating a diet high in red meat and saturated fat raises the risk of heart disease and cut out plant-based fruits and vegetables since they are high in carbs, but in doing so they also lose all the nutrients, vitamins, minerals, fiber and health benefits of a plant-based diet.
After Keto and Intermittent Fasting and Paleo the other highest trending diets, this year include the DASH diet, which is mostly plant-based with a small amount of fish or lean meat, Atkins, the Military Diet, the Sirfood Diet which Adele used to lose 100 pounds, the Whole30 Diet, the Alkaline Diet and the Noom Diet plan.
Ketodiets work on the premise that by following an extremely low-carb, high-fat eating plan, the body learns touse fat as a form of energy, but it does not mean that you have to eat a diet high in meat if you want to take a plant-based approach. In fact, that may be the healthiest way to be keto, according to cardiologists.
Knowing how popular the keto diet is, many people ask:Is it possible to be keto and plant-based? The answer is yes, if you are prepared to substitute animal protein with plant protein such as tofu and tempeh, and keep your fat sources from plant-basedfoods, such as avocados, vegetable oil, olive oil, or flaxseed oil, and be prepared to eat plenty of nuts. Getting health fats from plant-based sources such as avocados, olives, nuts, seeds and vegetable oil makes it possible, though you may not have the same array of choices as someone eating meat and dairy.
Functional medicine expertDr. Will Cole, author ofKetotarian, a predominantly plant-based Keto diet program told Dana Zepeda forThe Beet: A conventional Keto diet can be really low in vegetables due to the fear of eating too many carbs. However, on a vegan keto diet, you focus on low-starch vegetables like dark leafy greens, which give you a more well-rounded nutrient-dense diet in the long run.
Chef Suzi Gerber, who is the author of Plant-Based Gourmet, and a healthy plant-based food expert and chef, shares her list of foods that allow you to be keto and plant-based and it includesplenty of nuts, greens, and nut butters.
The list of vegetables with low "net carbs" which are the number of carbs absorbed by the body after the fiber, water and all other nutrients are taken into account, include: Celery (1 net carb), Spinach (1 net carb), Asparagus (2 net carbs), Avocado (2 net carbs), Cabbage (3 net carbs), Cauliflower (3 net carbs), Zucchini (3 net carbs), Kale (3 net carbs), Cucumber (3 net carbs), Green Beans (4 net carbs), Broccoli (4 net carbs) and Brussel Sprouts (5 net carbs).
On a keto plan, the goal is to consume no more than 50 grams of carbs a day, so you will load up on these dark leafy vegetables, which also happen to be high in antioxidants, nutrients and vitamins, making this the healthiest way to go keto, according to Dr. Andrew Freeman, a cardiologist at Denver's National Jewish Health. His view is that keto is fine, so long as it doesn't cut out all the plant-based healthy foods that your body needs to be heart healthy.

Is Paleo the way to go, yes or no? – Wiscasset Newspaper
Staying healthy has always been important, but never more so than this year, the year of COVID-19. Diet plays a crucial role in keeping our immune system strong its our first line of defense against disease. This weeks article explores the Paleo diet whats allowed on the menu, and whats not, and how those foods support a healthy body and encourage a healthier lifestyle.
The idea for a Paleolithic diet in the 20thcentury gained initial recognition when gastroenterologist Walter L. Voegtlin wrote The Stone Age Diet in 1975. Voegtlin believed returning to a hunter-gatherer diet similar to that of Paleolithic humans would be a healthier option. Ten years later, Stanley Boyd Eaton and Melvin Konner delved into the Paleo eating style, and then in 2002 Loren Cordain published The Paleo Diet.
Going Paleo, your diet will consist of lean cuts of grass-fed beef, pork and lamb; free range poutry and eggs, organic vegetables and fruits, fish (wild caught is best) and seafood; healthy oils including olive, coconut and avocado; and some nuts and seeds. Dairy products, refined sugars, processed, smoked or cured foods (and yes, that includes bacon), foods with preservatives, unhealthy fats (refined vegetable oils), salt and starchy grains and potatoes are all off the table. Ideally, none of these non-Paleo foods are buried in the recesses of your cabinets. Its always best to avoid the temptation.
Weight loss and being healthy are always major motivators when we look for a new diet, a new way to eat and knock off those excess pounds. A 2019 YouTube video presentation by historian Hamilton Stapell of SUNY-New Paltz reviewed results of a 2013 survey he co-authored, to find out who followed the Paleo diet, and why. The primary motivations for subscribing to a Paleo diet for all responding were weight loss and health concerns. Stapell conducted a follow-up online survey in 2018 with 1,506 people responding. The primary reasons were weight loss and recovery from illness. To watch the video, type Stapells name in the YouTube search box.
For whatever reasons people follow a Paleo diet, or another, it all comes down to health. Thepaleodiet.comsays Paleo is the only one to which human beings are genetically adapted. According to the website, following this diet, you are giving your body what it really needs, the foods we are genetically programmed to eat. This kind of diet will reduce those hunger pangs, keep you feeling satisfied, which will lead to weight loss. The foods on this diet all have high nutrient density, or foods high in healthy nutrients and low in calories.
Where do you buy all of this grass-fed meat, free range poultry and eggs? Food cooperatives such as Rising Tide in Damariscotta, Good Tern Natural Foods Store in Rockland and Belfast Co-op in Belfast. Maine co-ops support local farmers. Check out the MOFGA website. You may be surprised to find out how many family farms there are in our state, and whose foods are at these cooperatives.
Some supermarkets sell grass-fed beef and free range products including Trader Joes and Whole Foods. Whole Foods goes a step further and requires all producers to meet specific and rigorous animal welfare standards that apply to all stages of an animals life and environment. For a list of Maine farms dedicated to the welfare of their stock, visit http://www.eatwild.com/products/maine.html
This all sounds great delicious even, but what if youre on a tight budget, living paycheck to paycheck? The paleoleap and thepaleodiet websites suggest using a slow cooker for shank, chuck, shoulder meats that usually cost less. Buy canned wild caught salmon, sardines and mackerel, but if you can buy any of these fresh it is still best.If you cannot buy organic fruits and vegetables, be sure to wash them, especially during the pandemic because people touch loose, displayed foods. And there are websites listing commercial growers who use little or no pesticides. And dont forget to visit epa.gov. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for making sure pesticides still used are safe for consumption and the environment. It evaluates all pesticides by conducting hundreds of different scientific studies.
Is it possible to reap the health benefits of the Paleo diet inexpensively? Yes. First, shop around the perimeter of your supermarket and youll find what you need. Buy the foods on the diet you can afford or eat just one or two meals of the fresh, grass-fed, free range foods preferred on the Paleo diet.
According to the Mayo Clinic website, there have been no long-term clinical studies about the benefits and possible risks of the Paleo diet. Talk to your doctor about it. He or she might have advice similar to the Mayo Clinic: You might be able to achieve the same health benefits by getting enough exercise and eating a balanced, healthy diet with a lot of fruits and vegetables.

Most Indians eat unbalanced diet: Heres what you should put on your plate to promote health and stay fit – Times Now
Most Indians eat unbalanced diet: Heres what you should put on your plate to promote health and stay fit (Image credit: ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition)
New Delhi: A balanced diet is an essential part of leading a healthy lifestyle. It will supply the nutrients your body needs to function effectively. Consumption of proportions of different food groups will help prevent macronutrient and micronutrient malnutrition. Eating a balanced diet will also protect you against certain diseases, including heart disease and diabetes. However, a survey by Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR-NIN) found that most people in India eat an unbalanced diet, indicating that nutritional deficiencies are incredibly common in the country.
A healthy diet, well-balanced diet is, perhaps, the first denfence against diseases, includingCOVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2. According to experts, an average person needs about 2,000 calories per day to maintain their weight, although the amount will depend on various factors such as their age, sex, and physical activity level. The latest guidelines from the ICMR-NIN recommend that an adult should eat a2,000 calorie-diet per day. The ICMR-NIN survey showed that the actual intake is 1,943 calories in urban areas and across the country and 2,081 calories in the rural areas. The report, which highlights the first-ever break-up of the energy that Indians get from different food groups, also noted that these calorifically adequate diets hide major deficiencies.
Basically, your healthy plate should consist of a variety of healthful foods from different food groups, providing adequate amounts of nutrients required for good health. The ICMR-NINs revised plate, My Plate for the Day, will provide you food-based and easily understandable guidelines for creating a balanced meal.
The plate recommends sourcing of macronutrients and micronutrients from at least 8 food groups - with vegetables and fruits forming essentially half the plate of the recommended foods per day.
In an article published in Outlook Poshan, Dr Hemalatha R, Director, ICMR-NIN, and Dr K Damayanti, a Senior Scientist at ICMR-NIN), suggested that a balanced diet should provide around 50-60 per cent of total calories from carbohydrates, preferably from complex carbohydrates, about 20-30 per cent from total fats/oils and a minimum of 10-15 per cent from proteins. According to the experts, My Plate for the Day provides typically 13.5 per cent calories or energy (E) from protein, 29 per cent E from fat and 56 per cent E from carbohydrates required to meet the 2000 calories need in a day.
According to the ICMR-NIN, some of the benefits of regularly consuming foods in proportion as per the model plate are:
The guidelines from the ICMR-NIN also recommend that individuals trying to lose weight may cut down on intake of cereals. However, the guidelines stated that the meal plan is not meant for any specific medical condition.

Hashimoto Diet: Overview, Foods, Supplements, and Tips – Healthline
Hashimotos (or Hashimoto) thyroiditis also called Hashimotos disease is one of the most common thyroid disorders in the United States and other developed countries (1).
Even when treated with medication, its symptoms may significantly affect quality of life (2).
Research shows that diet and lifestyle modifications may drastically improve symptoms, in addition to standard medication. Every person with Hashimotos disease responds differently to treatment, which is why an individualized approach for this condition is so important (2).
This article explains the diet and lifestyle modifications most likely to benefit those with Hashimotos disease.
Hashimotos thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease that gradually destroys thyroid tissue via lymphocytes, which are white blood cells that are part of your immune system (1).
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland that sits at the base of your neck. It secretes hormones that affect nearly every organ system, including your heart, lungs, skeleton, and digestive and central nervous systems. It also controls metabolism and growth (3, 4).
The main hormones secreted by the thyroid are thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) (4).
Eventually, damage to this gland leads to insufficient thyroid hormone production.
Hashimotos disease is an autoimmune condition that affects your thyroid, eventually causing inadequate hormone production.
Diet and lifestyle play vital roles in managing Hashimotos, as numerous individuals find that their symptoms persist even with medication. Plus, many people who exhibit symptoms arent given medication unless they have altered hormone levels (2, 5, 6).
Whats more, research suggests that inflammation may be a driving factor behind the wide range of Hashimotos symptoms. Inflammation is often tied to diet (7, 8, 9).
Diet and lifestyle modifications are likewise key to reducing your risk of other ailments, as people with Hashimotos disease have a higher risk of developing autoimmune conditions, high cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes (10, 11, 12, 13).
Research shows that cutting out certain foods, taking supplements, and making lifestyle changes may significantly improve symptoms and quality of life.
Plus, these changes may help reduce inflammation, slow or prevent thyroid damage caused by elevated thyroid antibodies, and manage body weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels.
Diet and lifestyle changes may significantly decrease antibody levels, improve thyroid function, and reduce symptoms caused by Hashimotos disease.
Here are some evidence-based dietary tips to help treat Hashimotos disease.
Many studies indicate that those with Hashimotos are more likely to have celiac disease than the general population. As such, experts recommend that everyone diagnosed with Hashimotos be screened for celiac disease (14).
Whats more, some evidence suggests that gluten- and grain-free diets may benefit people with Hashimotos disease.
In a 6-month study in 34 women with Hashimotos disease, a gluten-free diet reduced thyroid antibody levels while improving thyroid function and vitamin D levels, compared with a control group (15).
Many other studies note that people with Hashimotos disease or autoimmune diseases in general likely benefit from a gluten-free diet even if they dont have celiac disease (16, 17).
When following a gluten-free diet, you must avoid all wheat, barley, and rye products. For example, most pastas, breads, and soy sauces contain gluten though gluten-free alternatives exist.
A grain-free diet is more restrictive than a gluten-free diet, as it bans all grains. Although this dietary change may also offer benefits, research supporting it is limited.
The Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) Diet is designed for people with autoimmune diseases. It removes potentially harmful foods like grains, dairy, nightshades, added sugar, coffee, legumes, eggs, alcohol, nuts, seeds, refined sugars, oils, and food additives (2).
In a 10-week study in 16 women with Hashimotos disease, the AIP Diet led to significant improvements in quality of life scores and significantly decreased levels of the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP) (2).
Although these results are promising, larger longer duration studies are needed.
Keep in mind that the AIP Diet is a phased elimination diet and should be prescribed and monitored by an experienced healthcare provider.
Lactose intolerance is very common among people with Hashimotos disease (18).
In a study in 83 women with Hashimotos disease, 75.9% were diagnosed with lactose intolerance (18).
If you suspect lactose intolerance, cutting out dairy may aid digestive issues, as well as thyroid function and medication absorption. Keep in mind that this strategy may not work for everyone, as some people with Hashimotos tolerate dairy perfectly well.
Inflammation may be a driving force behind Hashimotos disease. As such, an anti-inflammatory diet rich in fruits and vegetables may significantly improve symptoms.
A study in 218 women with Hashimotos disease found that markers of oxidative stress a condition that causes chronic inflammation were lower in those who ate fruits and vegetables more frequently (19).
Vegetables, fruits, spices, and fatty fish are just some examples of foods with powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
Following a diet low in added sugar and highly processed foods but rich in whole, nutrient-dense foods may help improve your health, manage your weight, and reduce Hashimotos-related symptoms (2).
Whenever possible, prepare your meals at home using nutritious foods like vegetables, fruits, proteins, healthy fats, and fiber-rich carbs.
These foods offer powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.
Some research indicates that certain low carb diets may help reduce body weight and thyroid antibodies in people with Hashimotos disease (20).
These particular diets provide 1215% of daily calories from carbs and restrict goitrogenic foods. Goitrogens are substances found in cruciferous vegetables and soy products that may interfere with thyroid hormone production.
Yet, cruciferous vegetables are highly nutritious, and cooking them diminishes their goitrogenic activity. Thus, its unlikely that they interfere with thyroid function unless eaten in extremely large amounts (21).
Some evidence suggests that soy harms thyroid function as well, so many people with Hashimotos choose to avoid soy products. Nonetheless, more research is needed (22, 23).
Going gluten-free, avoiding dairy, and following a nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory diet are just a few tips that may improve symptoms of Hashimotos disease.
Several supplements may help lower inflammation and thyroid antibodies in people with Hashimotos disease. Plus, those with this condition are more likely to be deficient in certain nutrients, so supplementing may be necessary (24).
Beneficial supplements include:
Other supplements like fish oil, alpha-lipoic acid, and N-acetyl cysteine may also help people with Hashimotos disease (37, 38, 39).
Note that supplementing with high doses of iodine in the absence of an iodine deficiency may lead to adverse effects in those with Hashimotos. You shouldnt take high dose iodine supplements unless your healthcare provider has directed you to do so (40, 41).
Many vitamin and mineral supplements, including zinc, vitamin D, and magnesium, may benefit those with Hashimotos disease.
If you have Hashimotos disease, a nutrient-dense diet may help reduce the severity of your symptoms and improve your overall health. Focus on the following foods (42):
Keep in mind that some people with Hashimotos disease avoid a few of the foods mentioned above, such as grains and dairy. Its important to experiment with your diet to find out what foods work best for you.
Whole, nutrient-dense foods should make up the majority of any healthy diet and may be especially helpful if you have Hashimotos disease.
Eliminating or restricting the following foods may help reduce Hashimotos symptoms and improve your overall health (43):
Some healthcare providers suggest that people with Hashimotos disease avoid soy and dairy as well and sometimes even nightshades and all grains.
However, although these recommendations may help many individuals, its important to experiment with your diet to find the best method for you.
Working with a dietitian who specializes in autoimmune diseases like Hashimotos disease can help you narrow down potentially problematic foods and set up an eating pattern thatll help you feel your best.
Steering clear of added sugar, highly processed foods, and gluten-containing grains may help reduce Hashimotos symptoms and improve your overall health.
Getting plenty of sleep, reducing stress, and practicing self-care are extremely important for those with Hashimotos disease.
In fact, research shows that engaging in stress reduction practices helps reduce depression and anxiety, improve overall quality of life, and lower thyroid antibodies in women with Hashimotos disease (44).
Letting your body rest when youre feeling fatigued is important as well.
Additionally, you should take thyroid medication on an empty stomach at least 3060 minutes before breakfast or at least 34 hours after dinner for maximum absorption (45).
Even coffee and dietary supplements interfere with thyroid medication absorption, so its best to consume nothing but water for at least 30 minutes after taking your medicine (46, 47).
Your healthcare provider can answer any questions about how to ensure maximum absorption.
Keep in mind that when youre first starting medication, it may take a few weeks or longer to start feeling better. If your symptoms arent improving, speak to your healthcare provider about other options.
As Hashimotos symptoms may significantly affect your quality of life and mental health, be sure to find a healthcare team that you trust. This may take some time, but its essential to getting the right treatment.
Reducing stress, getting plenty of rest, and practicing self-care are essential for those with Hashimotos disease. Finding a healthcare provider whom you trust is also key.
Its thought that Hashimotos disease develops from an immune defect coupled with environmental factors, though these factors arent fully understood (48, 49).
Diagnosis depends on symptoms and laboratory results.
Lab results indicating Hashimotos disease include elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), low levels of free thyroxine (FT4), and increased anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) antibodies.
Some people with Hashimotos disease also have elevated TSH receptor-blocking antibodies (TBII) and antithyroglobulin (anti-Tg) antibodies. These antibodies attack the thyroid gland (1).
The diseases destruction of the thyroid is intermittent. During its early stages, people may present with symptoms and lab results that indicate hyperthyroidism or even have normal lab values.
As such, Hashimotos disease is often difficult to detect, and individuals may go for months without the proper diagnosis. Up to one-third of people treated for hypothyroidism dont receive adequate or proper treatment (50, 51).
Hashimotos disease affects both women and men, but women are 510 times more likely to be diagnosed. Your risk increases with age, and most women are diagnosed between the ages of 30 and 50 (1, 50).
This condition is usually treated with synthetic or natural thyroid hormones. Synthetic ones include levothyroxine (Synthroid) and liothyronine (Cytomel), while natural ones include Armour Thyroid and Naturethroid.
Because Hashimotos disease affects nearly every organ system in your body, its associated with a variety of symptoms. These include (1, 51):
Untreated or improperly treated Hashimotos disease may lead to serious side effects, such as an increased risk of heart disease, cognitive disorders, and even death (52, 53).
Hashimotos symptoms vary widely and include weight gain, fatigue, cold intolerance, and constipation. The disease is diagnosed based on symptoms and lab results.
Hashimotos disease is a common autoimmune condition that affects the thyroid. It causes numerous symptoms that may persist even if you take thyroid medication.
Research shows that dietary and lifestyle changes can significantly improve your symptoms and boost your overall health. However, every person with Hashimotos disease is different, so its fundamental to find a dietary pattern that suits your needs.
A dietitian or other healthcare provider who specializes in autoimmune diseases may be able to help you find an eating pattern that works for you.

Diet and UTIs: All You Need to Know – Healthline
Although many websites claim that your diet has a lot to do with UTIs, theres a lack of evidence supporting this association.
While some studies have shown that certain beverages and dietary patterns may increase susceptibility to UTIs, theres limited research on how your diet affects your risk of developing UTIs, or whether certain foods and beverages can limit the length or severity of a UTI.
In fact, according to research, your diet and fluid intake are not considered independent risk factors for UTIs (1).
Still, the available research on dietary pattern, foods, and drinks that may affect your risk of developing a UTI is covered in the following section.
Research on the connection between diet and UTIs is lacking, and diet isnt currently considered an independent risk factor for UTI development. However, some evidence suggests that certain dietary patterns may protect against UTIs.
Some research suggests that certain dietary patterns may protect against UTIs. Plus, some foods and beverages have been associated with an increased risk of developing UTIs.
Studies have linked plant-based diets to a lower risk of developing a UTI.
For example, a 2020 study that followed 9,724 Buddhists for 9 years found that a vegetarian dietary pattern was associated with a 16% reduced risk of developing a UTI. This protective effect was mainly seen in women (2).
Researchers have suggested that certain foods, including poultry and pork, act as food reservoirs for bacterial strains of E. coli called extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC), which account for 6575% of all UTIs (2).
This means that food reservoirs may be a vehicle for transmission of ExPEC. The researchers in the 2020 study suggested that because vegetarians avoid common food reservoirs of ExPEC, vegetarian dietary patterns may help protect against UTIs (2).
Another way that vegetarian diets may help protect against UTIs is that they make urine less acidic. Research has shown that when urine is less acidic and more neutral, it helps prevent the growth of bacteria associated with UTIs (3).
Red meat and other animal proteins have high potential renal acid loads (PRALs), meaning that they make urine more acidic. Conversely, fruits and vegetables have low PRALs, making urine less acidic (4, 5, 6).
These factors could explain why plant-based diets may help protect against UTIs. Still, more research on this potential protective effect is needed.
Studies have also found a connection between the consumption of certain beverages and UTIs.
Older research has shown that soda intake may be associated with recurrent UTIs. An older study from 1985 in 225 women demonstrated that drinking cola soft drinks was strongly associated with UTIs (1, 7).
Some studies have likewise shown that certain beverages can act as irritants to the bladder and are connected to lower urinary tract symptoms.
A study in 30 women found that reducing potentially irritating foods and beverages, including coffee, tea, alcohol, and carbonated and artificially sweetened beverages, reduced lower urinary tracts symptoms, including how urgently and frequently they needed to urinate (8).
However, the researchers could not determine whether the reduction in symptoms was caused by the reduction of one or all of the potentially irritating beverages (8).
Another study that included 4,145 adults also found associations between coffee and soda intake and infections of the lower urinary tract (9).
Conversely, some studies have shown that certain foods and beverages may help reduce the risk of UTIs.
A 2003 study that included 324 women found that frequently drinking freshly squeezed, 100% juice especially berry juice, as well as consuming fermented dairy products like yogurt, was associated with a decreased risk of UTI occurrence (10).
The aforementioned study in 4,145 men and women showed that citrus juice intake was associated with a 50% reduction in lower urinary tract symptoms in men only (9).
Additionally, increasing water intake may help reduce UTI occurrence in certain populations.
A 2019 study in older adults living at nursing homes found that increasing hydration to support the daily fluid intake recommendation of 68 glasses of water per day reduced UTIs requiring antibiotics by 58% and UTIs requiring hospital admission by 36% (11).
Another study in 140 women with recurrent UTIs who drank less than 51 ounces (1.5 liters) of water per day found that increasing daily water intake by 51 ounces (1.5 liters) over 1 year protected against recurrent UTIs, compared with women who didnt increase their intake (12).
Although increasing water intake may be a way to reduce UTIs in certain populations, more studies investigating this potential link are needed, as most studies on this topic are outdated (13, 14).
When you have a UTI, avoiding potentially bladder-irritating beverages, such as coffee, tea, soda, alcohol, and artificially sweetened beverages like diet sodas, is a good idea and may help decrease symptoms (15).
Also, some research shows that certain foods and beverages, including spicy peppers, alcohol, tea, soda, alcohol, artificial sweeteners, and some fruits and juices, may worsen symptoms of bladder-related conditions like bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) (16, 17).
However, these conditions are distinct from UTIs.
While it makes sense to cut these foods and beverages out for potential relief, theres currently no strong evidence that avoiding certain foods or beverages will help cure or significantly reduce symptoms of UTIs.
Keep in mind that this article doesnt address supplements in relation to preventing or treating UTIs. Research shows that certain supplements, including probiotics and cranberry, may help prevent and treat UTIs (18, 19).
Some evidence suggests that vegetarian diets may protect against UTIs. Drinking soda and coffee may increase your risk of UTIs and irritate your bladder. Staying hydrated and consuming freshly squeezed juice and fermented dairy may help reduce UTI risk.
In addition to trying out some of the dietary recommendations listed above, lifestyle changes may help reduce your risk of developing a UTI.
Risk factors associated with UTI occurrence include (1, 20):
Other factors claimed to increase your chances of developing a UTI include wearing tight underwear, hot tub use, not urinating after sex, and douching, although strong evidence to support these claims is lacking (20).
While you may not be able to influence some of these factors, if you frequently get UTIs, trying to avoid risk factors that are under your control, as well as making certain dietary and lifestyle changes, may help.
However, keep in mind that theres currently a lack of strong evidence to suggest that any foods or beverages can treat or prevent UTIs.
Moreover, its essential that you see your healthcare provider if youre getting frequent UTIs so that you can get proper treatment. Untreated UTIs can lead to serious complications, including urosepsis, a potentially life threatening infection (21).
Certain lifestyle modifications may help reduce UTI occurrence and UTI symptoms. However, its best to consult your healthcare provider if you frequently get UTIs. Leaving a UTI untreated can result in life threatening complications.

The Benefits of Honey + How to Incorporate It Into Your Diet – Health Essentials from Cleveland Clinic
Winnie the Pooh might have been on to something. While honey is known as a natural way to sweeten foods, it may have benefits for your body, too, says registered dietitian Mira Ilic, MS, RDN, LD.
Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services.Policy
Honey is a liquid sweetener that bees make. After they collect nectar from flowers, they take it back to the hive and regurgitate it. Then, the other bees chew it until it becomes honey. The bees deposit the honey into tiny, waxy storage units called honeycombs. They fan it with their wings to dry it out. This process makes it stickier.
Honey gets its sweetness from its chemical makeup, Ilic says. Its made up of two simple sugars called glucose and fructose, along with some minerals.
The U.S. boasts more than 300 different types of honey. You can buy it:
Whether honey is light or dark in color depends on which kind of plant the bees who made it took the nectar from. For instance, dark buckwheat yields dark honey, says Ilic. But nutritionally, theres evidence that darker honey has less water and more antioxidants than light-colored honey.
Honey has so many different tastes you can enjoy compared to plain sugar, she adds. It can be sweeter or more bitter, depending on the flower source.
Light-colored honey tends to be mild in flavor. Varieties include:
Dark honeys are known for their stronger flavors. Examples include:
Store honey in a cool location away from sunlight. But sometimes, even in the perfect spot, honey can crystallize and solidify. Honey with a higher ratio of glucose versus fructose crystallizes sooner, Ilic explains. Glucose may also attach to the little particles of honeycomb and pollen in raw honey and is more likely to crystallize as a result.
But crystallized honey is still safe to eat: Ilic recommends using it as a spread, like butter. You can also re-liquefy it by putting the container in a warm water bath.
Honey contains antioxidants, minerals, enzymes that have many potential health benefits. Theres also evidence that honey can:
Many other claims have been made about the health benefits of honey some based on very small studies, others overstated and based on mixed study results, Ilic says. Additional studies are needed.
While honey has health qualities that other sugars only dream of, Ilic says its still an added sugar and eating too much of it can wreak havoc on your health. The American Heart Association recommends:
Those limits include all sources of added sugar in your diet, so use honey in moderation to avoid exceeding the limits, says Ilic. Try sweetening plain yogurt with a light drizzle of honey and add your own fruit, instead of eating flavored yogurt with too much added sugar. You could also use honey in sauces and marinades or as a skin mask.
If you want to use honey medicinally, Ilic says talk with your health care professional first.
Ilics first tip? The best honey doesnt come in a cute little plastic teddy bear. That kind of honey is processed and less beneficial than its counterparts.
The clearer the honey, the more processed it is. Raw honey seems to be the better choice, she says. Its likely to have some pollen and more enzymes because its not treated with heat. Pollen may have beneficial properties. But pollen does make honey look foggier.
If youre buying honey from a local source, she also recommends asking:
Ilic adds that an organic label doesnt automatically mean the honey is healthier or betterquality. Bees sometimes fly a few miles past their pesticide- and herbicide-free property to ones with flowers that arent. And even organic honey may be ultra-pasteurized.
