Researchers team up to support people with disabilities – UBC Faculty of Medicine
With gyms, recreation centres and sports programs closed due to COVID-19, people living with disabilities are looking for creative ways to stay active at home.
For many people, staying active during COVID-19 isolation can be a struggle. More so for people living with disabilities, says UBC Okanagans Kathleen Martin Ginis.
Martin Ginis is a professor in UBCOs School of Health and Exercise Sciences and director of the UBC Faculty of Medicine Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management. Shes also the director of the Canadian Disability Participation Project (CDPP)a group that has revived a service called Get in Motion to support people with disabilities get regular physical activity.
Get in Motion was a phone-in coaching service led by Martin Giniss lab, but put on hold a few years ago. Now, with people self-isolating, there is a push from public health authorities for people to get a daily dose of physical activity. However, Martin Ginis and her colleagues from Queens University, Amy Latimer-Cheung and Jennifer Tomasone, say Canadians with disabilities have fewer options than others to get exercise.
People with a disability are at increased risk for social isolation under usual circumstances, but especially so during the COVID outbreak, says Martin Ginis. They also face unique barriers and challenges to physical activity. With the closure of adapted physical activity and recreation programs, we are very concerned about the health and well-being of Canadians with disabilities. We are offering the Get in Motion service as a way to manage some of the psychosocial and physical health risks of being inactive at home.
Martin Ginis explains that adapted sport and exercise programs were closed across the country because of COVID-19.
We had been talking to our community partners who were closing their programs and we were all feeling upset about the impact these closures will have on community members with disabilities, she says. We were all thinking I wish we still had Get in Motion and then Amy Latimer-Cheung started the ball rollingand got the service back up and running.
Based virtually out of Latimer-Cheung and Tomasones lab at Queens, Get in Motion is available for all Canadians with physical disabilities, as well as for Special Olympics athletes. Participants can connect with a volunteer physical activity coach via phone or online conferencing. The volunteer then guides that person through an at-home physical activity program.
The CDPP is based out of UBC Okanagan and Martin Ginis has several students actively counselling Get in Motion participants while others are being trained.
Get in Motion volunteer Sarah Lawrason is a second-year doctoral student who studies physical activity participation among people with spinal cord injuries who walk. She was matched with someone who fits into her research population.
My client lost access to her regular physiotherapy when COVID-19 happened. We talk once a week about her exercise goals, says Lawrason. She appreciates the accountability of checking in and setting a goal each week and she's enjoyed the resources I've sent her that have similar exercises to her normal routine.
Lawrason notes, however, this is definitely a two-way relationship where both the coach and the client are benefitting.
Initially, I was really excited to start coaching as it aligns with my own research, she says. But I also really look forward to my calls each week because it's a new friendly person to talk to when I'm feeling isolated.
The CDPP has documented data about the benefits of sport and exercise participation for Canadians with disabilities including improved health, well-being and overall life satisfaction.
Our research has shown that a sense of belonging is key to people with disabilities experiencing full and effective participation in sport and exercise, says Martin Ginis. With Get in Motion, we are striving to provide that sense of belonging through phone calls with trained volunteers who have experience with adapted sport and exercise. Because the belongingness piece is removed if you are doing this all alone.

Portland Tennis and Education program stalled, but other service to families fills in – KGW.com
With no onsite tennis instruction or education mentoring, the nonprofit serving low income students in North Portland is serving up more food than tennis.
PORTLAND, Ore. Things are not the same at St. John's Racquet Center. Instead of kids coming here for Portland Tennis and Education programs, donated food is stockpiled in the lobby.
"We had a big food drive on Tuesday and we're trying to organize as many groceries for the families as possible," said Executive Director Jorge Fuenmayor.
Portland Tennis and Educationhas long history of bringing a sport often associated with country clubs to the city's poor and under-served. Along with tennis, the nonprofit provides after school and summer educational programs, mentoring kids. The classrooms we featured on news stories in the past are empty right now. But the work continues in a different way.
"Were really trying to address the basic needs of the families by helping them with food, school supplies, electronic equipment so that the kids can do digital learning, and then adding in a bill assistance program that were just starting right now," said Associate Director Stephanie Haas.
And they are providing a chance for the 70 kids in the program to get with their groups, remotely, and check in with mentors, too. The scholar athletes can still get some exercise, finding workouts and other information on a website made just for them.
The food deliveries are happening two or three times a week; another chance to connect, at least for a brief time. Fuenmayor says these families work hard for little pay. And now, 26 of 37 of them have lost their jobs.
"So a lot of concern about how to put food on the table how to pay the bills- some of the other families are doing OK but at the same time starting to worry about what's next," said Fuenmayor.
It's a tough time for the nonprofit as well. For now, PT&E has laid off over 80 percent of its staff and volunteers. But the hope is that tennis and education will come alive again in the future, at St. John's Center. In the meantime, donations of food, school supplies and financial assistance are appreciated. Tyra Vigil, an Exercise Science program student at Keiser Universitys Flagship campus is applying the knowledge and skills shes learned toward her externship at ECB Athletics in Panama City Beach, Florida.
Vigil, a Keiser University Flagship campus senior, is aiding in the development of social distancing strength and conditioning exercises designed to assist athletes in maintaining and building flexibility and muscle mass as they face COVID19 restrictions. She credits professors Dalton Oliver and John Crimmins for much of the knowledge shes gained and recommends that those entering the profession bea sponge to the insights of their teachers, coaches and other healthcare professionals while not hesitating to ask questions.
ECB Athleticsis a non-profit, veteran owned organization established to inspire, train, and coach young athletes by providing elite training at the collegiate, high school and youth levels. Its programs are designed to support and strengthen athletes, regardless of age, athleticism, sport or goal.
Keiser Universitys Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Sciencecombines both didactic instructions integrated with supervised practice and externships necessary to provide the student with the necessary tools to be successful in this field. The focus of this program is to prepare the student to take three nationally recognized and accredited field certifications. In addition, the coursework focuses on preparing the student with a strong foundation in science-based General Educations and a balanced offering of Core classes. Following graduation from the Exercise Science program, students will have the necessaryrequirements to pursue a degree in a variety of medical fields including physical therapy.

This decision was based on an early review of the data collected by Cancer Research UK in the VAC2 trial under a clinical trial and option agreement. In addition, Cancer Research UK will provide input on the potential use of VAC in the infectious disease space to develop a vaccine against SARS-CoV-2, the virus which causes COVID-19. Clinical data recently collected by Cancer Research UK in the ongoing trial of VAC2 has shown peripheral immunogenicity in patients with non-small cell lung cancer, providing validation of the underlying mechanism of using allogeneic dendritic cells to present antigens to the bodys immune system. Evidence of immunogenicity was a key clinical signal which was necessary before we would consider taking over the program, stated Brian M. Culley, Lineage CEO. Aged care residents benefit from tailored exercise programs – Have a Go News
Tailored exercise programs led by accredited exercise physiologists dont just provide physical benefits for residents living in aged care they improve mental wellbeing and social engagement, according to new Edith Cowan University (ECU) research.
A series of studies led by ECU Associate Professor Annette Raynor from the School of Medical and Health Sciences has investigated the benefits of a 12-week exercise program delivered by an accredited exercise physiologist for older adults living in three different residential aged care facilities in Perth.
According to health authorities, more than 50 per cent of the 230,000 Australian residents living in aged care experiencesymptoms of depression.
The new studies have provided preliminary evidence for the feasibility and effectiveness of an accredited exercise physiologist-led therapy program to promote residents physical and psychosocial wellbeing.
Associate Professor Raynor said previous research on exercise in aged care had tended to focus on thephysical effectsof resistance training and balance programs on fall prevention and in promoting functional capacity and mobility.
This focus on the physical outcomes from exercise often decreases the significance of psychosocial benefits, such as enhanced independence, elevated mood and reduced agitation that can also be achieved with exercise, Associate Professor Raynor said.
The program led to improvements in residents sense of independence, autonomy and social engagement. Residents demonstrated improvements in balance, strength, flexibility and mobility. The individualised structure of the program enabled residents to foster personal connections and accommodated specific needs relating to cognitive and physical impairments.
While the exercise programs achieved physical improvements in balance, strength and flexibility, other significant benefits such as increased connectedness and motivation were also observed.
Associate Professor Raynor said staff had noticed that residents were coming out of their rooms more often, joining in activities, their mood was enhanced and they were generally more happy.
One lady we worked with had experienced a stroke. She couldnt dress herself or go to the toilet unassisted. Prior to her stroke she had been very independent and found her current situation frustrating.
Through the exercise program she regained some independence, was able to join classes, choose her own clothes and go to the bathroom on her own, Associate Professor Raynor said.
These are the changes we were looking for an increase in strength and functional ability are great, but the extra benefits that this enhanced physical ability brings to the residents quality of life demonstrated the meaningfulness of the program.
Associate Professor Raynor said exercise interventions in aged care in WA were typically not delivered by exercise physiologists, who are specifically trained to deliver tailored exercise programs.
Because this exercise program was led by an exercise physiologist, they could prescribe and deliver one-on-one or group sessions tailored specifically to each individual.
This also meant they could build personal relationships and adapt the exercise to the residents needs, she said.

Saniona (OMX: SANION), a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company focused on rare diseases, announced today that the exercise period for the warrants of series TO 1 that was issued in connection with Sanionas rights issue and directed issue in the first quarter of 2020 will begin on May 11th. The exercise period runs from May 11th until and including May 25th, 2020. The holder of warrants of series TO 1 has the right to subscribe for one (1) new share in Saniona for each warrant held at a price of SEK 25.00 per share. The subscription price has been determined within the interval SEK 25.00-30.00 per share in accordance with the warrant terms based on the volume weighted average price of Sanionas share during the period from and including April 22nd, 2020, to and including May 6th, 2020. Upon full exercise of all warrants of series TO 1, Saniona will be allocated approximately SEK 37 million (before issuing costs). The holder of warrants must apply for subscription of new shares, by exercise of warrants, no later than 5:00 p.m. CEST, May 25th, 2020, alternatively sell the warrants of series TO 1 no later than May 20th, 2020 (half day of trading on Nasdaq Stockholm). Action from you as a warrant holder is required how to exercise your warrants of series TO 1:
In order for your warrants not to expire worthless your action is required. You must apply for subscription of new shares, by exercise of warrants, no later than 5:00 p.m. CEST May 25th, 2020, alternatively sell your warrants no later than May 20th, 2020 (please observe that it is a half day of trading on Nasdaq Stockholm where the warrants are traded under the short name SANION TO1).
You can have your warrants registered in two ways:
1. In a securities custody account with a bank or other nominee (for example, Avanza or Nordnet), in an investment savings account (Sw. Investeringssparkonto) or endowment account (Sw. Kapitalfrskring). Your warrants are then nominee registered.
2. In a VP-account (a VP-account starts with three zeros). Your warrants are then directly registered.
If your warrants are nominee registered
Subscription and payment of new shares, by exercise of warrants, shall be made to the account-holding bank/nominee with which the warrants are registered. The Importance of a Supportive Employer and Flexible Work Environment – Society of Women Engineers
The current world pandemic has highlighted to me the importance of an employer who is supportive of the employee, both professionally and personally, and encourages a flexible work environment. I work for HP Inc., and I feel very fortunate to work for them right now. Having a flexible working arrangement has been a defining characteristic of my career and is something that I value highly.
Three main components create a flexible work environment: time, location and assignment. I have utilized all these components throughout my career at HP.
Flexibility with time is varying when you are working within the day as well as the total time spent on work activities. Many engineers shift their work hours to accommodate meetings across time zones (coming in early or staying late), specific projects (timed-testing and specialty tests), exercise programs, family activities, and volunteer projects. I volunteered with SWE outreach programs and FIRST Robotics, and for both activities I left work early to spend my time encouraging students to pursue engineering careers. I have also shifted my time to volunteer for non-engineering activities, like elementary school field trips, doctors visits, and sporting events for my kids. The willingness of HP to accommodate these activities allows me to be a complete person and fills my bucket, creating a happy employee.
Flexibility with location is something that many employees are experiencing currently. However, before the pandemic began, working from home was a key component to my success as a parent and employee. Right now, Im working from home 100%, and while its not ideal, it enables me to help my kids with their schoolwork and take care of family matters. During normal times, I would take morning or evening telecons from home to allow quick transitions from work to kid activities. Some employees even use alternate locations as a home base during conferences or while visiting family.
Assignment flexibility allows managers to work with individuals to vary the experience for optimal productivity and fit, depending on ones life situation and the business situation. Certain projects lend itself to remote management while others require on-site or in-person presence. Assignment flexibility requires buy-in from team members and management. Two ways I have experienced assignment flexibility are first, being assigned to projects that dont require extensive travel when my kids were little, and second, taking on a role that involved test areas which were able to continue work while I was not physically present, allowing my impact to not be limited to my personal work hours. I also see this flexibility firsthand as coworkers grapple with medical issues or home situations demand more attention than work.
Management by Objective is necessary to create this flexible environment. Employees can contribute to the best of their ability throughout their career, benefitting both the employer and the employee. Employees are happier, healthier, and more dedicated to coworkers when allowed to be contributing members of their communities in addition to accomplishing their work objectives.
As I prepare to travel to another state and care for my mother, a recovering COVID-19 patient who was on a ventilator and hospitalized for four weeks, I am reminded of why I value the flexible work environment. I plan to work remotely and use some PTO during my time away from my family. Throughout her illness, my management and coworkers have been extremely supportive of my needs and accommodating with my projects. They have gone out of their way to show care and concern. This isnt the first time. I have seen these caring actions and flexibility offered to many employees throughout my tenure at HP. I realize that not every job and function has this remote work capability, and I am grateful for my current situation.
