Got resistance bands? Just a kettlebell? These workout videos use the fitness gear you might have at home – CBC.ca
It's been a few weeks since you've been in the gym (maybe longer for some) and you're getting the hang of the HIIT workouts that are plentiful online. Popular gyms and studios are giving you the chance to try their classes often for free. If you happen TO have a piece of equipment or a gym prop at home that you haven't put to use lately; here are some free workouts that incorporate simple pieces like resistance bands, mini bands, dumbbells and kettlebells.
By now you might know that you don't need a set of dumbbells many fitness instructors will suggest cans, water bottles or even bags of rice for weighted exercises. Home fitness fanatics are scavenging their homes for improvised props to add a little strength-training to their routines. Is it heavy-ish? It will do.
Resistance bands
This unassuming piece of elastic takes up little space but can have a huge impact on your physical fitness. You may have acquired one for rehab exercises from your physiotherapist but it's an inexpensive and multi-purpose piece of equipment that's excellent for stretching and building strength.
Sculpt with Stretch Band by Body Harmonics
A popular Pilates and movement studio, Body Harmonics has a collection of workout videos for those looking to get toned, strong and energized with proper movement. A favourite for those who regularly practice Pilates, they're offering a free 14-day trial of their library if you sign up before the end of April (a 7-day free trial is available after that).
Instagram Workouts by Kurt Gordon
A personal trainer and popular Fit Factory instructor, Kurt is the type of boot camp instructor you love to hate; intense and he expects you to work hard. With gyms closed, he's posting exercise programs on his Instagram account including one with resistance bands that will make you wonder how a long elastic band can make life so hard.
Studio Lagree
Certain studios have a cult following and Studio Lagree is one of them. Adapting to having to shut their doors temporarily, the studio is posting regular live workouts on Instagram that incorporate bands and dumbbells (with options to swap one for the other depending on what you have available.)
Resistance band workout with Rosalie Brown and Melinda
A veteran in the fitness industry, Rosalie Brown has sold over 1 million personal training DVDs and transitioned to logging workouts on her YouTube channel. Often shot from her home, this suits those who prefer a trainer who coaches you gently.
Mini bands
Also called Booty Bands because of their use for building Kardashian-like posteriors, these bands can be found with various resistance levels and cost just a few dollars. If you have a regular resistance band, tie it into a loop to be used as a mini band.
Explosive Bodyweight HIIT Workout by Shea Pierre
Celebrity Trainer for City Shred, Head Strength Coach for the Toronto Argos and Founder of Pierre Elite Performance Gym and Online Training, Shea's fast-paced videos on YouTube are challenging and explosive. He has his own line of fancy adjustable training bands, but mini bands can be used for the same exercises.
30 Minute Butt and Thigh Workout with Sydney Cummings
Using very simple equipment, this popular online fitness trainer regularly adds new workouts to her YouTube channel so you'll always find something new. Almost 2 million people have viewed this particular workout so we can assume we'll all have perkier butts because of it.
Dumbbells
The same week that everyone hoarded toilet paper and pasta, forward-thinking fitness buffs ordered dumbbells and kettlebells. If you have them but haven't picked them up yet, here's some inspiration.
Sydney Cummings YouTube
This workout was made to be apartment friendly but don't assume you won't work as hard as if you were in a gym. Browse Sydney's library of free workouts for more dumbbell ideas.
Body Harmonics Restorative Workout
Not everyone wants to grunt and lift heavy weights. Body Harmonics offers this workout with light dumbbells, weighted balls or even bags of rice, to give you just a bit of resistance with a workout that's gentler on your body. Take advantage of their free trial to test out their programs.
Dumbbells with Kelsey Wells
With almost 3 million Instagram followers, personal trainer and creator of the PWR programs, Kelsey Wells created this 20 minute dumbbell workout that's easy to follow and perfect when you're short on time. Her online programs are for subscribers but you can try them free for 30 days.
Kettlebells
Don't be deterred if you don't have kettlebells at home, many of the exercises can be done with dumbbells (or that large jug of laundry detergent). Form and technique are essential to avoid injury so don't push yourself if you're not familiar with the movements.
Kettlebell Basics with Hannah Eden
We can always use a little refresher, especially if you haven't picked up your kettlebells in a while. Celebrity trainer Hannah Eden's YouTube channel also includes short exercise demos so you can make sure you're doing things correctly before you get fully into the swing of things.
30 Minute Kettlebell Workout with Sydney Cummings
Build strength and sweat with this half-hour workout. Sydney's YouTube channel offers an extensive variety of easy home workouts.
10 Minute Kettlebell Butt Workout with Sydney Cummings
In case the previous workout feels too long and you want to build those glutes try this shorter kettlebell workout.

Exercise Research shows this 23-minute workout can do amazing things for your health – Ladders
Public health guidelines recommend 30 minutesof daily exercise of moderate intensity, but with new social distancing rules, some are finding that harder to obtain than usual. With online exercise classes, it is definitely possible to get some exercise in right in your home. When it comes to HIIT workouts, or High-Intensity Interval Training, the 7-minute workout might be your cup of tea. But if there is anything that the Coronavirus pandemic has given most us, its more time to try new things.
So instead of the 7-minute workout, you might be able to fit the 23-minute workout into your routine. Research shows that one 23-minute HIIT session per week has the ability to boost youraerobic capacity, lower your blood pressure, and lower your body fat.
The most interesting part of the study is that one session per week is nearly as effective as three 23-minute sessions per week.
This study, which waspublished in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, aimed to analyze HIIT exercise programs in a real-world environment instead of a laboratory setting. In this study of 250 overweight and obese adults, the researchers created four groups. One group performed a HIIT workout three times a week, while another did one HIIT workout per week, the third did three moderate-intensity workouts per week, and the last group did nothing as a control.
An analysis of the results found that both of the HIIT workout groups lost more body fat than the other two groups. Additionally, the group that worked out only one time per week lost nearly as much weight as the group that worked out three times per week, and also saw similar aerobic and blood pressure benefits.
The research shows that you will only see these results if you honestly participate in a HIIT workout, which means you give as much effort as you can for a short period of time, then you rest for enough time for your body to recover, and then you return to maximum effort.HIIT workouts go beyond what makes you feel comfortable.
For example, a HIIT exercise for a runner could look like this:sprinting for 30 seconds, jogging for 30 seconds, sprinting for another 30 seconds, etc.
A light jog or spin on the electrical bike for 23 minutes will not provide the same health benefits as a 23-minute HIIT workout.
While HIIT workouts certainly are not as much fun as others, you do see rewards such as saving time, and seeing the health benefits listed above from just one workout per week.
Participants in this study reported doing HIIT workouts in a variety of ways, including using hills, stairs, running, exercise equipment such as bikes, elliptical trainers, and rowing machines, as well as home-based circuit-type exercises such as burpees and star jumps. Some participants reported taking part in commercial gym, online or app-based HIIT workouts. Others said they took participated in high-intensity sport-based training such as futsal or squash. All of these activities produced exercise of adequate intensity, which is 80% or greater heart rate peak (HRpeak).
You can use this video as an example for what a 23-minute HIIT workout looks like:

NYC Playgrounds Ordered Closed – I Love the Upper West Side
During my days at the 76th Street and River Side Park playground, when my children were little, theres one incident that stands out among others. I was standing by the jungle gym. An agile little four-year-old boy ran to the bottom grid, and climbed his way quickly to the top.
He stood tall, held his hands up in victory and then fell straight down. He was caught, just before he hit the ground, by another childs father, who had been standing inside the grid of climbing bars, watching his own toddler. The man held onto the boy. Are you OK? Yup, the boy answered and ran off. Well Im not, I heard the man say, shaken by the fact that only chance allowed him to save the boy from what likely would have been a catastrophic injury.
Lucky escapes in the playground, whether from accidents or exposure to a deadly virus, are not what we New Yorkers want. We have to be proactive. Im tired of being behind this virus, said Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has announced that NYC playgrounds will be closed after determining that compliance with social distancing in public playgrounds has been insufficient. Supporting Cuomos decision, City Comptroller Scott Stringer said A crisis calls for clear, decisive action. I commend the governor for doing the right thing. As a parent, I understand the desire to have spaces for kids to play, but public health must come first.
I know how hard it is to keep children confined. But, even thinking of and reminding ourselves of the terrible risk is enough motivation to come up with some original indoor exercise routines and theres electronic help; something that would have been less available even a decade ago. My daughter and her family set up their own home gym with a couple of mats, some weights and access to a TV screen; gym-time has a regular routine. Some private gyms are offering access to month-long remote gym programs as well.
The kids use the remote to turn on a video exercise program. And, on to stretches, weight lifting and other strength-developing routines.
Sharing is caring!

Encinitas Environmental Education Collaborative organizations respond to health crisis in many ways – Encinitas Advocate
Encinitas non-profit and public organizations in the Encinitas Environmental Education (E3) Collaborative are stepping up in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to an E3 news release. In a Zoom video conference March 30, leaders of the seven organizations in the Quail Gardens/Saxony corridor shared updates on how they are responding to the recent public health crisis.
Despite state mandates that have closed their facilities to visitors to ensure social distancing, these devoted organizations continue to serve their members and the broader community. Here are some examples.
The Magdalena Ecke YMCA facilities are closed to members, but it is offering online exercise programs, looking to partner with local agencies on blood drives, opening its gym for blood drives, and providing its buses to deliver supplies and care kits to needy families, among other initiatives.
The San Diego Botanic Garden staff continue to maintain the grounds and plant collections while posting botanic education projects for house-bound families.
The Encinitas Union School District continues serving families in its district with online instruction, working to make sure children are cared for, loved and learning. In addition, EUSD is providing meals for district families, incorporating fresh vegetables from Farm Lab.
Coastal Roots Farm has stepped up its ongoing organic produce donations to various social services agencies in addition to continuing its twice-weekly Pay-What-You-Can Farm Stand open Thursday 12-3 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Education and administrative staff have shifted to support farm production and food distribution to fill in for volunteers now staying at home. Around 70% of the customers at the Farm Stand report that the COVID-19 crisis has hurt them economically.
While the San Dieguito Heritage Ranch is closed for the duration, its volunteers are continuing those activities they can do behind the scenes, such as continued research and planning new exhibits.
The Leichtag Foundation is supporting community organizations dealing with the financial impacts of the coronavirus with information and bridge loans, as well as increased communications and connectivity. The Hive has moved its programs online and is also offering activities such as a virtual art show and encouraging its nonprofit members to do things away from their devices and screens.
Seacrest Village continues to serve its senior population with great care and dedication. By taking aggressive safety measures quickly, Seacrest is protecting its residents and staff from possible infection. Using closed-circuit technology, residents enjoy recreation, social, and spiritual support in their rooms, while the facility strictly limits contact from outside visitors.
The Encinitas Environment Education (E3) Collaborative consists of Seacrest Village, Encinitas Union School District Farm Lab, the Leichtag Foundation, Coastal Roots Farm, the San Dieguito Heritage Ranch, the San Diego Botanic Garden, and the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA. News release

Stay mentally and physically well with these tips from Georgia Gwinnett College – 11Alive.com WXIA
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. The director of wellness and recreation at Georgia Gwinnett College, Carl Woods, is providing tips and tricks to cope with the new normal of staying at home during the coronavirus.
Its a huge loss and almost depressing for some people when they cant go to the gym every day, said Woods. But there are plenty of ways to stay active at home and even people who dont exercise regularly should set aside the time.
Woods points out that exercise is good for the mind as well as the body, and in a crisis like this keeping ones mental health is as important as anything.
Its really important to do the basic things drink water, walk before and after meals, and watch your meal consumption because our bodies arent burning as many calories as they normally would going to our places of work and back each day. Doing the physical basics can set you on the path to holistic health.
Most people are thinking they cant go out but couldnt be farther from the truth, he said. Were practicing social distancing, not complete isolation. We just have to be cognizant and respectful of other peoples space and make sure our hygiene is where it needs to be for the safety of others. So go to the park and have a walk, but be sure to choose a park or trail that is not crowded. If you have to pass someone, do it quickly and maintain that distance of six feet of separation. Be sure to check the parks website or social media page for up-to-date hours of operation and/or closures. It might seem odd at first but this is our new normal for now.
Here are Woods seven favorite tips to keep your mind and body in shape during this national crisis:
Carl Woods has been the director of wellness and recreation at Georgia Gwinnett College since 2014. He earned his undergraduate degree in health and physical education from Clark Atlanta University and his masters degree in urban teacher leadership from Georgia State University.

"We have implemented pandemic planning activities across our organizations, increased screening of staff and resident symptoms, increased staffing to provide extraordinary cleaning and sanitation measures, are educating our residents on proper hand hygiene, social distancing, and cough/sneeze etiquette, and we are complying with mandatory visitor closures. Additionally, regular staff education is an important part of our prevention measures."
Julie Hoeg, CEO of the Sunset Community in Pugwash and Vice-Chair of Diverse Abilities NS, adds the second priority focus has been re-imagining social and recreational programming and helping residents to understand why preferred activities, such as community outings and visits, are not possible at this time.
"Social inclusion and participation in local community are fundamental tenets of everything we do in our sector, so we are being very creative in supporting our residents adjust to the changes arising from the pandemic situation and make life as normal as possible," says Hoeg.
Examples of these creative measures include:
Additional efforts have also been undertaken to keep families and friends in touch with their loved ones through the use of technology, such as Facetime and Skype, as well a regular phone calls.
The organizations have also taken steps to ensure they are continuing to meet the needs of participants receiving services in community programs and that they are being supported with coping with the required isolation that all Nova Scotians are currently experiencing. Staff from regular day programs and social enterprises have been redeployed to provide extra assistance and ensure adequate staffing is in place.
"Recognizing and supporting our staff is also critically important during the pandemic," says d'Entremont. "They are the unsung heroes whose commitment to provide high quality care and support to some of Nova Scotia's most vulnerable citizens is unwavering."

Sir Isaac Newton said it best: An object remains at rest unless acted upon by a force.
In other words, youre going to stay plastered to that chair unless you decide otherwise.
Following safety precautions is only half our battle against COVID-19. As I mentioned last week in my article for older adults, we have another crisis brewing amid the coronavirus pandemic: serious health problems as a result prolonged sedentary behavior.
How serious?
Just like older adults, research shows that young people also become more vulnerable to conditions like cancer, diabetes, stroke, heart disease, depression, anxiety, obesity and chronic pain from extended periods of inactivity. For the foreseeable future, were stuck in a perfect storm for contracting or exacerbating these health problems.
Stay home does not mean stay immobile.
Daily exercise and healthy eating habits help prevent serious health conditions while enhancing sleep, energy and even earning potential. If you already embrace these habits, keep up the great work and encourage family, friends and others you care about to do the same.
If you dont, its the perfect time to look in the mirror (figuratively and literally) and make some healthy changes. Now more than ever, the tried-and-failed excuse I dont have time has no merit, given that most of us are stuck at home and looking for ways to be constructive.
The first step is to commit to making time every day for yourself. Taking care of yourself yields a priceless return thats contagious with people close to you. Ask any doctor: Its the ultimate medication with zero side effects.
The second step is to establish the time of day youll do your program, which should be the same every day to develop habit for you and family and friends, so they know not to bother you during this time. Next, what program are you going to follow? Here I will outline a basic home program requiring only a set of dumbbells that safely trains all muscle groups. Even if youre an experienced trainee, reviewing the program ensures youre using safe technique.
There are a million different ways to exercise. The universal key is to do so in a manner that protects your joints to avoid injury. Please take a moment to review proper technique in a video of the exercises by watching above or clicking here. Included in the videos linked are stretches, which are an important part of every health program but also need to be done carefully to protect joints. I suggest reviewing the lat stretch, hip stretch, pec stretch and hamstring stretch, all of which can reduce joint stress and pain if done correctly.
The lateral raise, wall press, bridge, hip abduction, bench dip, seated dumbbell curl and crunch included in the video are optional and should be added gradually if you havent trained in a while.
Focus on learning technique by doing 25-30 repetitions of each exercise at a moderate intensity. If your technique is off, youll notice the exercises are too easy along with joint discomfort, which is counterproductive. Review the video often and invite a family member to watch you to help get technique right.
Figure A: Squat. To protect your knees, don't go deeper than 50 degrees.Ty Downing
The first movement is the squat (Figure A), which targets the thighs, glutes and hips while indirectly using the hamstrings, lower back and calves. The keys to this movement: minimize arching of your low back, dont squat lower than 50 degrees of knee bend and stay back on your heels. Almost every strengthening program includes squatting deeper than 50 degrees of knee bend, which research shows dramatically increases knee forces. This can lead to knee problems, especially if you have arthritis.
Figure B: Lunge. Relaxing the back knee and focusing on the front knee is challenging.Ty Downing
The second movement is the lunge (Figure B), which trains the same muscles as the squat but challenges balance more. The range of motion is the same, but the hard part is relaxing the back leg and focusing on the front thigh. Keep the front knee slightly outward, as collapsing it toward midline increases knee and ankle forces.
Figure C: Bent-over row. Note that the dumbbells and hands are wider than the hips.
Figure C2: Perfect posture should be maintained throughout the movement.Ty Downing
Next is the bent-over-row (Figures C, C2) for the back, shoulders, neck, forearms and biceps while indirectly using the glutes, thighs, low back, hamstrings and calves. This is one of the hardest movements to do correctly due to body position, so make sure you set up correctly and maintain throughout. Keep your elbows and hands slightly away from your body and head and trunk still. The payoff is that you train 10 muscle groups at once.
Figure D: Side plank. Supportive shoulder down, belly in.Ty Downing
The side plank (Figure D) trains your hips, sides of your trunk and lat muscles, which are the biggest muscles in your back. Take special care to keep your supportive shoulder down to protect your shoulder, and your belly in to protect your spine. More advanced trainees can do this movement off their feet.
Figure E: Pushup. Hips higher than shoulders, elbows straight out to side.Colin Hoobler
Finally, the pushup (Figure E) is excellent for your chest, shoulders, triceps, neck, tummy and hip flexor muscles. The most difficult parts of this movement are keeping your head still, hips up and back straight, not arched. Keeping the hips up does two things: It makes your chest muscles work harder and protects your lower back.
Completing this program should take about 10-15 minutes and you should feel great afterward. If you have any health problems, get clearance from your doctor first. If you feel sharp pain or that something is wrong, stop and check your technique.
In addition to this program, get outside and walk briskly for at least 30 minutes every day. Research shows that our immune systems respond positively when exposed to nature, so take an umbrella with you and stick to the 6-foot spacing and hygiene rules.
At some point, well be out of this debacle and not only will you feel and look better, youll have healthy habits that will serve you well for the long haul.
Because Ralph Waldo Emerson was also right: The first wealth is health.
