The best workout apps and YouTube videos for when you can’t leave home – Mashable
The world of online fitness is so vast it can be intimidating. Which app or YouTube video will serve your personal fitness goals the best? Which has moves you can safely do on your own? What if you dont have any weights or equipment? Which of these exercise gurus is actually legit?
In times when you cant attend a gym or IRL workout class, digital fitness doesnt have to be stressful.
"Not every workout has to be vigorous or an hour long to reap the benefits of exercise Azul Corajoria, a Tier 3 personal trainer at Equinox, told Mashable. Often times I tell my clients that the best workout is the one they'll actually do. Even if that means its at home for 30 minutes, move your body.
The first step to staying active in close quarters is to let go of that decision paralysis. Recognize that whatever app you download or YouTube channel you throw on, youve already taken an impressive step toward caring for yourself in possibly abnormal circumstances. It doesn't have to be perfect. No matter if youve chosen a cardio workout or a HIIT session, youre getting your blood flowing, youre juicing your endorphins, and youre reminding your muscles what they can do. Its just about finding what works for you. Deep breath in, deep breath out.
Now that weve made that choice a lot less terrifying, lets delve in to the world of whats actually out there. Here are some of the consistently best-reviewed and recommended at-home workout apps and YouTube channels.
Totally free, free trials, and premium offerings abound in the app store.
From trainers to Apple editors, the Nike Training Club app comes highly recommended. Its nice interface and variety of programs and trainers make it an an app store editors choice, too. Heres what the app store editors have to say about it:
Getting in shape can be a challenge, so making exercise fun and engaging is crucial to staying on the right track. This Nike fitness app features a polished collection of visual workouts, hosted by celebrity athletes like Serena Williams. It's equally effective at home or at the gym. While each lesson can be taken on its own, Nike Training Club also features month-long structured programs thatll help you achieve even better results.
I usually work out in a gym, but this is the app Ive downloaded for my home workouts. I like how easily searchable it is and how it has exercises that are long or short (some in 5 minutes!), some that use equipment and others that just use bodyweight, and collections like Big workouts for small spaces and Boost your mood.
Most importantly: this app is free. There are premium programs that put you on weeks-long routines, and give you access to fitness & nutrition expertise from our Master Trainers. But if youre just dipping your toes into app-based fitness, the free version seems more than sufficient.
The masters of live workout classes just made it easier than ever to get in on the action. Peloton is extending its free 30-day trial of the Peloton app to 90 days to help people cope with staying at home.
For those of you wondering: no, you dont need a Peloton bike to find the app useful. Peloton actually offers live workout classes in HIIT, yoga, running, strength, and other regimes that require no equipment at all. Peloton adherents love the live element, because it adds an urgency and communal element to something youre doing on your own. Plus, Peloton is known for its beloved, inspiring instructors. Nothing like some motivation to get you moving.
Access to the app comes standard for people who own Pelotons tread bike and subscribe to All Access Membership. If you dont have a bike, a Peloton Digital Membership costs $12.99/month.
Aaptiv is an app for audio workouts, meaning your trainer is in your ear, not on a screen. This is a popular app for the gym since it has multiple treadmill and other cardio equipment-based workouts, but its useful at home, too, since it has strength training, HIIT, and yoga, and outdoor running if you want to venture outside. Its known for its great playlists peppered with instructions and motivation from trainers. It also refreshes its content often, with 30 new workouts every 30 days. Not too shabby!
Aaptiv packs great audio-only classes for all those workouts that just dont make sense for video, the app store editors say. Smart design, great music, and a huge library of classes make even the most hardcore exercises enjoyable.
Unfortunately, all that content doesnt come free. Aaptiv has a 7 day free trial, and then charges $14.99/month or $99.99/year.
Kait Hurleys Move + Meditate program might not have a big name like Peloton or Nike, but her workouts that combine high intensity exercise with meditation could be the perfect fit if youre looking for more than just a good sweat. You can just exercise, just meditate, or do an exercise session (like HIIT or running) that ends with a meditation. Hurleys soothing encouragement might be just what you need to get you on the move and centered. You can try a 14 day free trial, and then its $19.99/month for a monthly subscription, or $119.99 for a year (which comes out to $9.99/month).
The best thing about fitness on youtube? Its free-99, baby!
With nearly six million subscribers and multiple Reddit community endorsements, the husband and wife team that run Fitness Blender could be the virtual trainers youre looking for. They have over 500 workouts of multiple lengths, and the titles specify whether you need equipment or not. There's no music in these one-on-one trainings conducted in a white void. However, the explanations of the movements and the countdown timer are super visually clear and usually loud enough that you can play your own tunes through a speaker if you want. I recently chose Lizzo's album and it was the perfect accompaniment to what turned out to be a VERY sweaty HIIT session.
A name that kept coming up in my YouTube search was Cassey Hos blogilates. Maybe its just because blogilates is catchy, but multiple reviewers caused her beginner-friendly pilates-esque YouTube classes and burning bootcamp videos fun and encouraging, but super hard. Pilates is all about small targeted muscle and core strengthening a great idea for anyone who wants to improve their health all around.
This YouTube channel used to post daily fitness videos, but is not so active lately. However, a trove of celebrity-focused videos led by Instagram fitness influencers remains on the YouTube channel, which has over 3 million subscribers.
PopSugar has tons of workout class options, but some of the standout offerings are in their dance and cardio sections. Want to do Zumba in your home? No problem. How about hip hop or latin dance? You got it. Just because youre cooped up inside doesnt mean you cant have fun.
The Times set the world ablaze when it claimed you could get a full workout in just 7 minutes of high intensity interval exercise. The workout is based on an article in a fitness journal that crafted 12 optimal moves into an extremely compact full body workout. You can guide yourself just by looking at this diagram, doing each move for 30 seconds, with 10 seconds of rest in between. But if you want the ease of an app, that exists, too.
I recently strapped my Apple Watch back on after months of not wearing it. Ill likely be working from home for the next couple weeks, and my beloved gym is closed, so Im giving myself another tool and reminder to keep moving. My Apple Watch tells me to stand once an hour - a good reminder for my couch-bound self. Apple also suggests setting Activity Sharing or Activity Competitions with coworkers and friends so you can keep each other motivated from a distance.

A Good Fitness Program Is Always Among The Best Weight Loss Tips – California Herald
This is absolutely true. A good fitness program can really help you lose weight. Exercise and fitness are among the best tools and steroids for mass someone can utilize not only to lose weight but also manage to keep the weight off. Of course in order to achieve weight loss with exercise and fitness you need to follow some simple weight loss tips that can help you use them efficiently. In this post we will outline the 3 most important weight loss exercise tips.
First you need to make sure that you find an exercise and fitness program that you like.
This is important because if you try to follow a program that you do not like very soon you will get bored and quit. This will not only destroy your weight loss efforts but it will also make you reluctant to take another shot and eventually this will decrease your confidence in trying to lose weight. On the contrary, if you follow a fitness and exercise program that you like and enjoy, this will give you courage and strength to work hard until you achieve your weight loss goals.
Second, you need to choose a fitness program that is realistic for your physical capabilities.
A lot of programs can bring good weight loss results but there are some programs suited for advanced users and require a lot of effort and stamina. If you are new to exercise and fitness you should choose a program that is suitable for beginners. This will be easier for you to follow and also you protect your self and health from unpredictable results. When starting with fitness for the first time you should not push your self too hard because this may be the cause of other more serious health problems. Start easy at the beginning and gradually get into more intense and hard training programs.
Third, it is necessary that you create your own personalized weight loss plan.
The plan will help you keep track of your weight loss progress and also it will be your reference point. For example if you need to lose 20 pounds the first thing you need to do is to create your weight loss plan. In the plan you will have 5 milestones spread over a period of 3 months each. Your weight loss goals will be to lose 4 pounds every 3 months. In other words you will have to adjust your diet and your exercise and fitness program so that you lose about 1.3 pounds per month. This is a very realistic amount of pounds to lose and having the plan will help you concentrate on each milestone separately. This is a much better and easier approach than having in your mind that you need to lose 20 pounds. You need to know in advance that weight loss takes a lot of time and needs a lot of effort and hard work.
Verdict
The only way to achieve fast weight loss results that will last for a long time is through exercise and fitness. Exercise will help increase your metabolism, which is responsible on how fast or slow your body can lose weight. The more your exercise the better will be the results. Last but not least exercise and fitness have a lot more to offer to your overall health than just weight loss.

Update: Black Oak League Bowling And More Cancellations - MyMotherLode.com
What happens next? Nicholls athletics deals with virus best it can – Daily Comet
Stefanie Slekis tried to answer as many questions as she could while rumors and concerns about the COVID-19 coronavirus and the state of the program swirled through the Nicholls track and field program.
The Colonels coach called a team meeting on March 12, in the hopes of giving her athletes some heads up on what might be heading their way. Over the next 48 hours, their season would be put on hold until at least the end of the month and then for the remainder of the year.
In the days to come, athletes, several of which are international students from all over the world, worried they might not be able to get home for months as countries began locking down their borders. A few heard unfounded rumors through social media the Texas border would soon close, meaning even U.S. students may be stuck in Louisiana for the time being.
On top of that, they have dorms to move out of and potential online classes to set up. They have to return books at the end of the semester. International students have visa requirements to fulfill. They were unsure if they could continue training as a team or if their coaches could send suggested workouts they could do on their own.
What about eligibility? Will seniors be allowed an extra year to compete and what would that mean for scholarship counts?
In what felt like one of the longest weeks of many peoples lives, the rapid fire of breaking news reports could not compete with the rising rate of questions. Every clarification created more confusion and every solution only seemed to bring about more problems.
The world, and the sports world in particular, was in chaos with everyone doing their best to figure it out one step at a time.
Augusta (Marie Christensen), who is from Denmark, asked me, Theyre talking about closing the borders until July in Denmark. I think I might need to get home, Slekis said. Youre looking at if somebody doesnt get home now and the borders close and cross country starts in August, they might not get to go home until December or next summer. Our team, we were following it pretty close already because of the international students on our team. Our Texas kids were following it, too, and one of my Texas girls was following things and talking about the National Guard and that they might close the Texas border, she thought.
So they were really paying attention, and because of all that happening, they realized this is bigger than us being able to go run.
The decision to shut down all NCAA winter and spring athletics for the remainder of the year is one that filled many programs with mixed feelings.
Nicholls womens basketball coach DoBee Plaisance thought the teams seven game win streak going into the postseason was a sign they were going to win the whole Southland Conference Tournament. But even as they received news of its cancellation just minutes before loading the bus for the arena, Plaisance voiced her total support in doing what was best for the health of the student-athletes.
The move is even worse for spring sports who had only just begun when they were told they could no longer play.
Nicholls baseball coach Seth Thibodeaux said he understood the decision and knows it was for the best, but that doesnt negate the bitter disappointment of a season ending before it could really start.
The Colonels were preparing to host their Southland home opener against Central Arkansas this past weekend and just beginning to feel good about their play after a rough start. Now, Thibodeaux cant help but think about how a series loss at New Orleans would, unbeknownst to them at the time, be the final weekend series of the year.
Its tough for everybody, Thibodeaux said. Theyre a little depressed. Were a little down, but were trying not to be all doom and gloom. Our goal is to make the best of it. But its a tough time. Its different.
Its a situation few can compare to any other in recent history.
Thibodeaux was an assistant coach at Southeastern Louisiana during the devastation of Hurricane Katrina back in 2005, which altered many athletic schedules for months. But that was also during the fall and didnt prevent players from meeting for team activities when they were able, leaving him in uncharted territory for how to proceed now.
The lack of experience left teams scrambling to figure out ways to keep players in shape while sitting at home. For many that meant creating exercise programs that focused on body weight lifts and conditioning.
Nicholls beach volleyball coach Kallie Noble said her program sent players individual workouts they could do from home after all but three players left Thibodaux to be with family.
As a coach, you just let them know this is one of those things that are out of your control, Noble said. You can either sit and dwell on it and be upset or you can pick up the pieces and move on.
"Today they received their at-home workouts because we assume they cant go to a gym right now and we dont want them going to a gym right now so an at-home workout for now and then as things hopefully clear up in the next few weeks theyll transfer into their summer workout packet."
For Slekis and the track team, the quarantine wont change much as they essentially shift to offseason workouts where she can recommend trainings sessions and advise runners on how best to proceed. She noted running outside by yourself can be beneficial for your immune system while still practicing the recommended social distancing in order to fight the spread of the disease.
I just sent out really light training for this week because so much is going on, Slekis said. I have girls taking international flights. Other kids drove home to Texas. So I just sent a team email saying heres where were at, hers some ideas on what to do this week, some light workouts I thought they could do and some suggested mileage for the week.
Slekis credited Nicholls leadership, under Interim Athletic Director Lindsey McKaskle, for being helpful in guiding teams while so much uncertainty floated around the situation. With little information coming out of the NCAA and the Southland at the moment, teams have tried to gather as much guidance as they can where they can.
But the questions about what happens next rage on.
All programs are in a complete dead period for the time being before they can hope to resume any team activities or bring recruits to campus for official visits. Nicholls will roll out online classes over the next week as many other schools across the country do the same.
As of now, the Southland Conference halted all team events until March 30, including practice and spring football, but said in a statement that it reserves the right to alter plans as more developments about the virus roll in.
When teams will be able to return and what the landscape of their sport will look like when they do remains an open question.
At the end of the day, it may really benefit some players if they get another year, Thibodeaux said. The tough part is that theres some players maybe starting medical school, maybe starting law school, maybe in their fifth year trying to get their masters and finishing up. Thats really hard.
Theres so many good things that are going to come out of this, even though it doesnt look like it right now. The tough part is that I know my team was not ready to stop.

Fitness classes are beloved by many, and for good reason. Be it the collective nature and sense of belonging in classes, the gratification of learning a new skill, or the physical and mental health benefits, there are countless reasons why we find workout classes so empowering. While I personally prefer the studio of a Rumble class over essentially any other method of fitness, circumstances often arise that find me there less often than I'd like.
Unfortunately, due to growing developments regarding the novel coronavirus, many gyms and studios nationwide have temporarily closed. Social distancing is now more of a priority than ever before, and many find themselves adjusting to a new normal. To manage the anxiety that comes with such an adjustment, The American Psychological Association suggests developing a daily routine and maintaining a healthy lifestyle to the best of your ability.
Thankfully, at-home workouts are more accessible than ever. Programs like ob focus entirely on at-home fitness and studio-centric apps like ClassPass offer videos as a worthy alternative to in-person classes. We've broken down some of our favorite workout apps and video services that help you stay fit while staying inside some may even help replicate that feeling of being in your favorite class.

Before Trumps inauguration, a warning: The worst influenza pandemic since 1918 – POLITICO
Rather than heed the warnings, embrace the planning and preserve the structures and budgets that had been bequeathed to him, the president ignored the risk of a pandemic, Rice wrote. (Trumps former national security adviser John Bolton, who oversaw the dissolution of the NSCs global health security and biodefense section, has defended it as necessary streamlining, countering that global health remained a top NSC priority. Trump, when recently asked about the reshuffling, called the question nasty and said, I dont know anything about it.)
Lisa Monaco, Obamas homeland security adviser, explained the thinking behind the January 2017 session in a recent essay for Foreign Affairs. Although the exercise was required, the specific scenarios we chose were not, she wrote. We included a pandemic scenario because I believed then, and I have warned since, that emerging infectious disease was likely to pose one of the gravest risks for the new administration.
None of the sources argued that one meeting three years ago could have dramatically altered events today. But Obama aides say the Trump administrations fumbling of the coronavirus outbreak is partly rooted in how unprepared and in some cases unwilling it was to engage in transition exercises at all in late 2016 and early 2017.
David Shulkin, who was an Obama appointee at the time but had been nominated to be Veterans Affairs secretary in the Trump administration, said in an interview that with the exception of this exercise, which he didnt recall well, he noticed that in his agency, there had been little coordination and very little interest in working with the Obama appointees.
They had said we dont really have a lot of need to talk to the Obama appointees, he said.
That botched handoff sparked weeks of confusion, all the way up to Inauguration Day. There was a frenzy before the transition where I was asked to consider staying because the [preparedness] mission was so important, said Nicole Lurie, who served as Obamas Health and Human Services assistant secretary for preparedness and response, where she worked on crises like the Ebola virus outbreak and attended the pandemic exercise. Then through the HHS secretarys office, the next day, I heard they changed their mind.
The Trump campaign, like the rest of America, was shocked to win the November 2016 election. Soon afterward, Trump cast aside his teams transition prep work that had happened already and started over; some of his aides described tossing carefully collected binders full of possible personnel picks into trash bins. It was days, sometimes weeks, before his nominees and their aides showed up to meet the people they were replacing if they did so at all or to engage in transition meetings. Obama aides said they left detailed memos for their successors, but that quite often it appeared those memos were never read. Many on the Obama side were genuinely surprised that so many actually showed up for the Jan. 13, 2017, exercise, and there were expectations that some would skip it. On the Obama side, several agencies were represented by their second-in-command at the meeting for reasons including a belief that Trumps principals wouldnt show.
The gathering was held to satisfy a requirement in a 2016 law that updated the procedures around presidential transitions to require, among other things, that the outgoing administration prepare and host interagency emergency preparedness and response exercises. Obama also mentioned it in a 2016 executive order laying out his transition goals.

Gold's Gym to temporarily close corporate-owned US locations, offering digital workout programs through end of March - FOX Carolina
Ocean County closing nature centers and certain but not all parks – wobm.com
Social distancing is of paramount importance to everyone in the state and is continuing to be relayed and strongly encouraged by health officials, lawmakers, law enforcement and others.
As a result, Ocean County Parks and Recreation has announced will be keeping its 27 parks and two golf courses open to the public, but closing the visitor and nature centers until further notice.
The visitor and nature centers at Jakes Branch County Park in Beachwood, Cattus Island County Park in Toms River, Wells Mills County Park in Ocean Township, and Cloverdale Farms County Park and Cedar Bridge Tavern in Barnegat Township have been closed to the public, but bathroom facilities will remain open.
Childrens programs, exercise, yoga and wellness programs, nature and outdoor events, weekend drop-in walks and feedings, van trips and hikes have been canceled until further notice.
In addition, the Ocean County Golf Courses at Forge Pond and Atlantis will beclosed until further notice.
Ocean County Parks and Recreation has also closed the county dog parks at the Ocean County Airpark in Berkeley Township and Ocean County Park, Lakewood.
Playgrounds, tennis courts and basketball courts also will be closed at all Ocean County Parks.
As the weather warms up, residents may want to get out of their homes for a bit and visiting one of our parks can be an option, Ocean County Freeholder Virginia Haines, who serves as Chairwoman of Ocean County Parks and Recreation, said. While our events and programs are canceled and nature centers are closed, we encourage families to take advantage of our parks and golf courses to get fresh air and exercise as we work together to get through this.
Our county parks are second to none and they are a great escape. You can visit a park and still be away from large crowds, Ocean County Freeholder Director Joe Vicari said. Luckily for us, nature allows us to have a break from everything that is happening right now.
For questions or information on program refunds, you can call 732-506-9090.
Information can also be found on oceancountyparks.com or on the Parks Facebook page @OceanCountyParks.
