This Is the Soup I Make Every January To Start the Year Off Right – Yahoo Lifestyle

I try very hard not to look at January as any sort of reboot, detox, or kickstart month. It is too easy to fall into a trap of focusing on the first month of a new year to be the start of something big, especially around eating. I know too many people who start weight loss or fitness programs, become vegetarian or vegan, sign on for Whole30 or Drynuary, only to end January feeling worse about themselves or like a failure if those things have not magically produced change.

Instead, I like to think of January as a month to ease myself into the new year. The bridge between the holidays and the year ahead, a month to be kind and forgiving of myself.

January is both about reflection on what preceded it and trying to have some intentionality about the year ahead. Any year is a marathon, not a sprint, and so I think of January as the beginning of training. No one would expect me to do 20 miles right out of the gate.

After years of thinking of January as the month that would start the diet that would finally work, or the exercise program I would love, or whatever else I was looking to reformat, years of resolutions broken, I finally stopped making any predictions or prognostications or promises and just decided to use January to slowly start to focus energy in positive directions where possible.

When it comes to eating, after the indulgences of the holiday season, I am usually pretty ready to lighten my consumption, and eat things that are easy and bright. The doldrums of winter are setting in, so I want light and punchy flavors, some heat to balance the cold outside, and whatever freshness I can muster up. So sometime in the first week of January, I make some version of this soup. It makes a lot, because both my husband and I work from home and so we are eating both lunch and dinner in most days. It is less of a recipe than a ratio, because I dont want to bother with following anything prescriptive, and I dont want to feel burdened by access to ingredients or amounts.

In a big stock pot, I heat up some coconut oil, canola, or peanut oil till it shimmers, and then throw in a couple cups of chopped onion, a quarter cup of chopped garlic, about a half cup of thick slices of fresh ginger, and one or two chopped serrano chilis. Once they have sweated down, I pour in about six quarts of water, a quarter cup of fish sauce, and a quarter cup of soy sauce. Once this is simmering, I taste and adjust seasoning with salt, pepper, red pepper flakes if I want more heat, more fish sauce or soy sauce if it needs punch. Then I add about 10 cups of assorted cut-up green and white vegetables. This might include everything from broccoli and cauliflower to spinach, watercress, snow peas, snap peas, bok choy, or napa cabbage. I usually include a bunch of chopped scallions. I simmer till the veggies are tender but not mushy, and then let cool and stash in the fridge. I can reheat it a bowl or a pot at a time.

I can serve it over rice or noodles or with nothing. I like a squeeze of fresh lime and some fresh chopped parsley, maybe some crunchy bean sprouts on top. My husband likes his with cilantro and chopped avocado on top. If I make chicken, I might add some shredded chicken in for protein.

It never feels like diet food, deprivation food, or food that is what you are supposed to eat. It feels like a bowl of green in the winter where access to green is limited, and its filling without being heavy. It can be the starter to a larger meal or a meal all on its own. It is great with a beer. Or without. Mostly it feels like the most delicious and tender bit of self-care. And a very good way to start the year.

Each year, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) releases its Top 10 Fitness Trends. With wearables, group training and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) topping the list, it is sure to have an effect on campus recreation. Lets take a look at the top 10 trends for 2020 and how they integrate with our campuses.

What is it?

Wearable technology first appeared on the Top 10 list in 2016 and hit the No. 1 spot. After remaining No. 1 in 2017, it dropped to No. 3 in 2018, went back to No. 1 in 2019 and its here to stay. Wearable technology includes any fitness trackers, smartwatches, heart rate monitors, and/or GPS tracking devices.

What does it mean for Campus Recreation?

Our students, faculty/staff, and members are more vested in their own behaviors and habits than ever before. Wearable technology can increase self-efficacy in our members and it is no longer an added value, its an expectation. Find creative solutions to incorporate wearable technology in your programs whether they are structured, self-directed or even virtual. Many physical education and activity courses are even moving to a hybrid or complete online model with the use of wearables.

What is it?

HIIT training are exercise programs that consist of short bursts of high-intensity efforts followed by short periods of rest. Although sustained efforts of more than 90% maximum effort can cause potential injuries or other hazardous effects, HIIT isnt going anywhere. HIIT hit the trends report, for the first time ever, strong in 2014 at the No. 1 spot and hasnt left the top five since.

What does it mean for Campus Recreation?

HIIT is becoming a bread and butter of our operation whether we provide structured HIIT opportunities or our clientele participate self-directed. Education to our staff is essential for HIIT. It needs to become a part of our staff training programs, onboarding and continuing education. Remember true HIIT training is 30 minutes or less; if you are able to sustain HIIT training in excess of 30 minutes then you arent doing HIIT.

What is it?

The term group training can be quite confusing. In 2019, ACSM did not separate large group training and small group training on the worldwide trends survey; therefore, in this case, group training is intentionally designed, in-person movement classes led by an instructor for groups of five or more participants. Small Group Training can still be considered to be in this category, but remember, small group training is back-of-house terminology for programs like HIIT, etc.

What does it mean for Campus Recreation?

Group exercise programs arent going anywhere. What we consider to be group exercise is going to continue to evolve; the outcome wont change but the pathway will. We need to be delivering memorable movement experiences that cause our participants to miss us when they arent there. Live, in-person classes arent going away, but we need to start implementing virtual programs that reach people where they are.

What is it?

Training with free weights showcases that instructors and trainers teach participants proper form with the use of barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells and/or medicine balls. Resistance is increased and progressed as form is executed properly. Training with free weights hit the Top 10 list for the first time in 2020 and debuts at the No. 4 spot.

What does it mean for Campus Recreation?

We need to remember all of our clientele are typically training in one of the following four categories: health, function, fitness or performance. For those training for fitness, its important to progress clients away from pin-selected equipment to training with free-weight equipment when ready. Our movements in our training space should mimic the five primary movement patterns we execute in daily life: bend and lift, push, pull, single leg movement, and rotation. Consider hosting a form workshop and have your personal trainers take charge.

What is it?

Personal training is considered a one-on-one exercise program and continues to trend as it becomes more accessible with online, in-home, in-club and worksite training programs on the rise, as a large shift in personal training has moved online. The ACSM trends report began in 2006 and personal training has remained in the top 10 ever since. Personal training jumped from the No. 8 spot to the No. 5 spot for 2020.

What does it mean for Campus Recreation?

Personal training is changing and so should we. Think about offering online programs, moving toward a membership model with personal training, and having more than one trainer work with a single client. Read more about the changes in personal training by checking out this blog post.

What is it?

According to ACSM, Exercise is Medicine (EIM) is a global health initiative that encourages health care providers to include physical activity assessment and associated referrals to certified fitness professionals in the community as part of every patient visit. In addition, EIM recognizes fitness professionals as part of the health care team in their local communities. EIM took the biggest jump for 2020 and went from No. 10 to No. 6 on the list.

What does it mean for Campus Recreation?

Exercise is Medicine will continue to rise. Take advantage of the access to relationships on campus with your health center and/or medical schools if you have one. Keep the conversations moving to see what it takes to implement a referral program on your campus.

What is it?

BWT hit the top 10 trends report in 2013 and hasnt left yet. BWT is a combination of variable resistance and neuromotor movements in all planes of movement utilizing the body as a machine. It uses minimal equipment and maximizes workout effectiveness. It can also be argued as the most affordable way to train.

What does it mean for Campus Recreation?

Ive said it once and Ill say it again. Simply put: less equipment, more open space.

What is it?

This trend emphasizes the need for offering programs for baby boomers and the active aging generation. In general, people are living longer, healthier/active lives, working longer, and potentially have more discretionary funds to spend.

What does it mean for Campus Recreation?

We may see our faculty/staff work longer in their careers and see an increase in their membership and engagement with us. We are also seeing an increase in the non-traditional student which can increase the age diversity of our typical member. When creating programs for your campus rec department to offer, consider who your ideal member is for that program and ways to be inclusive of all age groups. Look for opportunities to partner with your community on programs like Silver Sneakers when your foot traffic is typically lower.

What is it?

This trend incorporates behavioral science into health promotion and lifestyle medicine programs. Health and wellness coaching can be delivered in a one-on-one or small group setting both in-person and online. Its based on motivational interviewing and a practical application of health behavior theory. Health and wellness coaching has been in the top 20 since 2010.

What does it mean for Campus Recreation?

I can confidently say that health and wellness coaching needs to be close to the top of your priority list in campus recreation. Mental health is continuing to be a top concern on our campuses and our helping professionals, like counseling centers, are often understaffed and overbooked. Take time to build relationships on how you can help each other. Find out why people are falling into the river and try to prevent them from doing so. Theres no time for territory wars when it comes to health and wellness coaching because the well-being of our students and community is everyones responsibility.

What is it?

Employing certified fitness professionals replaced the broader term prior to 2019 which was educated, certified and experienced fitness professionals. Hiring certified health/fitness professionals through accredited education programs and certifying bodies is more important than ever. The National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA) allows employers to easily validate employees certifications along with the US Registry of Exercise Professionals (US Reps).

What does it mean for Campus Recreation?

If we say we prepare our students for their future, then we need to actually do so. We should be offering educational and certification programs on our campuses that prepare our students to sit for group fitness, personal training, and/or health coach certification exams. Most educational partnerships are offered at no cost to the Campus Recreation department, and students receive extensive discounts to the certifications. With the rise of US Reps, its more important than ever fitness facilities are hiring credentialed health and wellness professionals.

The ACSM Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends is always one of my favorite reports to read each year. It always sparks interesting discussion and often we will rebuttal, in many online social media platforms, why something popular in an area didnt make the list. Just because there is regional popularity on something doesnt always mean its an international trend. Campus Recreation departments need to stay in the know of whats happening around the world with movement trends. Our goal is to prepare our students for success beyond college so we would be doing them a disservice by not preparing them for whats actually ahead. As we embark on this new decade, how will you create change?

Hope Mills Parks and Rec opens new fitness center – The Fayetteville Observer

New and improved workout space will benefit community

HOPE MILLS Just in time for those healthy New Years resolutions, the Hope Mills Parks and Recreation Center has unveiled a brand new fitness center.

"This is just so nice," Erika Worley said as she took a break from the lat pulldown machine. "I didnt expect this."

The rec centers new fitness room opened Monday at the 5770 Rockfish Road location with two treadmills, two ellipticals, a seated elliptical, a recumbent bicycle and circuit exercise equipment including three multifunction machines. The center also features a new station with TRX suspension training along with free weights, kettlebells, foam rollers and mats.

The room has rubber flooring, natural light, and a pair of new smart televisions.

Use of the fitness center is free for ages 55 and up, and it costs $3 per session for ages 18-54.

"I think this provides encouragement for folks to live a well-rounded, healthy lifestyle." said programs coordinator Kasey Ivey. "Its been a labor of love for me, personally and professionally, because I have a fitness background."

Ivey is happy to see the improved setup along with the addition of a personal trainer.

Monika Cotter already instructs the parks and recreation centers Under Construction and FUNctional Fitness classes. Now, shes on-hand for guidance in the fitness center with assessments and training.

"Shes in here to help folks get orientated, make sure theyre wiping down the equipment, make sure the new guidelines are followed," Ivey said.

"If someone wants to know, How much weight should I use? or How many reps do I do? She cant safely guide someone if she doesnt know their starting point. So shes doing fitness assessments and personal training."

Assessments cost $25 and are required before personal training sessions can be booked.

But if you just want to get in the center and work out on your own, "you can schedule an orientation and Ill go over how to use the machines and things like that now," Cotter said.

She pointed out different muscle groups that machines in the room target. "With these machines, you can hit a little bit of everything," Cotter said, emphasizing that exercise should be fun.

"I hope people will learn to love working out. You want it to be fun so that you can stay consistent and make it a healthy lifetime habit."

Husband and wife Sooky and Paul Abril have made a habit of good health.

"Were regulars here," Sooky said. "We started coming in 2012 and we come four days a week, in the mornings."

She liked the added space and natural light in the new fitness space, along with the benefits of exercise.

"It helps me build muscle and I dont breathe as hard at work and I just feel healthier as I come here more and more," she said.

Paul, an Army veteran, also approved. "This is one of my priorities," he said. "Youve got to keep moving.

"The best medication is movement."

Worley said that she, too, comes to exercise multiple times a week.

"You read about it in the paper every day and you hear about it on the news, how important it is to exercise," she said. "Im so much healthier than a lot of people my age. I hardly ever get sick."

The treadmills can improve cardiovascular health and burn calories. The ellipticals are also cardio machines that target the glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, and tibialis anterior. The seated elliptical offers the cardio workout with less pressure on the back and knees.

The circuit equipment works everything from the hamstring, glutes and quads to shoulder and chest, biceps, triceps and lats.

The equipment is leased from Gym Source, which also designed the fitness center layout. Preventative maintenance is worked into the contract, and the company also handles repairs.

The TRX station, according to Cotter, "is great for flexibility and stability.

"Out of all the equipment you can possibly have, I feel like this is one of the most important," she said.

"You can do squats, rows, abs, cardio, and it offers stability."

TRX stands for Total Resistance Exercise, and it uses ones own body weight to develop strength, balance and flexibility through suspension training using straps.

The station is situated beside a 6x8-foot mirror behind the cardio equipment. "So now folks actually have space and equipment for their stretching and recovery as well," Ivey said.

Shed like to see the equipment utilized by the entire 18-and-older age range for which its intended.

Cotter also provides training to ages 14-17, with parent or guardian supervision, and she can specialize training for specific sports.

"I am really excited," Cotter said. "Its beautiful and I think its going to be great for the community. "I love seeing everybody here enjoying it and getting active."

Gym Class Without the Gym? With Technology, It’s Catching On – WTTW News

Grace Browns schedule at West Potomac High School in northern Virginia is filled with all the usual academics, and shes packed in Latin, chorus and piano as extras.

What she cant cram into the 8:10 a.m.-2:55 p.m. school day is gym class.

So shes taking that one minus the gym, and on her own time.

The 14-year-old freshman is getting school credit for virtual physical education, a concept that, as strange as it may sound, is being helped along by availability of wearable fitness trackers.

For students whose tests and textbooks have migrated to screens, technology as gym equipment may have been only a matter of time.

Grace, who lives in Alexandria, wears a school-issued Fitbit on her wrist while getting in at least three 30-minute workouts a week outside of school hours. She has an app on her computer that screenshots her activity so she can turn it in for credit.

While online physical education classes have been around for well over a decade, often as part of virtual or online schools, the technology has made possible a new level of accountability, its users say.

Were asking kids to wear this while they do an activity of their choice, and they can change the activity as they desire, as long as its something that they understand is probably going to get their heart rate up, said Elizabeth Edwards, department head for online physical education at Fairfax County Public Schools, which includes Graces high school.

Though a physical education instructor isnt shouting from the sidelines, teachers do guide assignments by setting goals such as fat burn, cardio or peak, relying on the technology to be their eyes and ears. Students also are required to sign in for a weekly 60-minute to 90-minute classroom session with the teacher.

Teenagers who play soccer, swim or dance all year may satisfy the workout requirements without doing anything extra. Grace has been adding bike rides and jogs to her days.

For her, online PE freed her up to take three elective courses, instead of two in school. For others, its a welcome way to take a required class that students otherwise may find socially or physically challenging.

We definitely exercise more in online PE, Grace said. Theres a lot of standing around in regular PE. Online, I do much harder workouts.

A survey of more than 3,000 fitness professionals by the American College of Sports Medicine named wearable technology the top trend in fitness for 2020.

Its not clear how many schools are embracing the trend. It comes with some cautions.

Technology and the collection of any student data always raises the specter of student privacy concerns. And some worry that students exercising on their own may miss out on important social concepts such as teamwork.

There is a difference between physical activity and physical education, said Chris Hersl, former vice president for programs and professional development at SHAPE America, which wrote national standards for K-12 physical education.

Physical activity is great for the body. We want everybody to move, he said, but physical education is a class where students are taught how to move their body and the social context in which to do that.

Joliet Township schools in Illinois uses fitness trackers as part of a blended learning conditioning program that has students who sign up for it work out two to three times a week in the gym with an instructor and the other days on their own.

Its a flexible schedule where they still have in-person physical education classes and theres still instruction happening, but theyre able to use the Fitbit to monitor how students are working outside the classroom, said Karla Guseman, the districts associate superintendent for educational services.

She said its one of numerous blending learning options that Joliet Township High School offers to give students both more control over the pace and time of their work, and more responsibility to get it done.

Were trying to give them an opportunity to see what post-secondary might look like, Guseman said, when you dont meet every day but youre still expected to do work for a course or preparation between class periods.

A virtual school that is part of the Springfield, Missouri, public school district started with a single class -- physical education, said Nichole Lemmon, the creator of the program, called Launch, which uses Garmin fitness trackers.

Eight years ago, it was the very first online class by our developers to meet a really niche student who could not fit PE courses into their schedule, Lemmon said. Maybe they wanted to take more honors level courses, or advanced placement, or international baccalaureate classes and PE was hard to fit in, so we allowed them to do it outside of the school day.

A telling illustration of the technology-driven 24/7 school day is the peak log-in time on the schools portal system: 10:03 p.m.

They may not be working out at 10 p.m., but thats when theyre turning in their workout. The notion that education now runs 7:30-4, 8-3, is really antiquated, Lemmon said, and our students are begging to be able to have more flexibility in the time of day they learn.

During the past summer session, there were 22,600 students enrolled, and the most popular courses were PE, she said.

Teachers help students set up their fitness devices, entering the students height, weight and age, and coming up with a target heart rate. As an added layer of instruction and accountability, Launch students are required to send video back to the teacher, who checks their technique as they stretch or lift weights, for example.

They work with their PE instructor to set a fitness goal and then they get their workout however they want to, Lemmon said. It really does promote lifelong fitness because its about working out the way they want to, not theyre required to do a particular activity in gym. ... We have a lot of kids -- a locker room is their worst nightmare. Its not where they want to be.

Graces mother, Rhonda Brown, remembers how hard gym class soccer and softball games were for her because of blindness in one eye.

Youre talking to someone who was always picked last for every sporting activity. I have nightmares sometimes, she said.

Shed like to see the county go even further and grant waivers from PE to kids that play school sports.

Were so stuck in the traditional classroom setting. These kids are burning 2,000 calories during a practice and more at every game., she said. I wish the schools would catch up with the times.

I joined LIVE WELL because I needed an exercise program that would help alleviate the chronic pain of fibromyalgia and arthritis and help my body move with more freedom, says member Connie Godfrey. My program is built upon the exercises my body needs to heal and become stronger, while tracking and monitoring my progress.

Connie has come to LIVE WELL for two years and now frequents the newly opened North Delta clinic. At 50, her health is more important to her than ever before.

The incredibly fun, knowledgeable and caring staff take the time to check in with each member on a personal level. Cecilia Valenzuela joined LIVE WELLs Surrey location in 2017, enjoying workouts designed for her unique health and fitness needs. Taking into account her abilities and limitations, her routines constantly evolve with her changing health.

I have chronic and painful joint issues because of Lupus and Fibromyalgia. I also had liver failure in 2013 and kidney failure and pnuemonia with bilateral collapsed lungs in 2016. I couldnt even laugh. I needed an exercise program created for my health challenges.

Today, Cecilias regular exercise program has made her pain more manageable, reducing the number of flare-ups and related hospital visits.

Shes also seen other health benefits, too. Im more flexible and my cardiovascular health has improved. I could only walk five minutes and now Im walking over an hour. My strength has increased, Ive lost weight and Ive reduced my waist and hip measurements by four inches!

Often members enter the program as a couple or with a friend. Whether its someone you already know or a friend you make by joining, its just part of the support network built into the LIVE WELL community. In fact, only a year after Cecilia joined, her husband Victor also joined LIVE WELL in Surrey.

Ive had three car accidents, the last one was in 2018. My memory is still affected and I have chronic pain from my neck to my lower back, Victor says. Since joining the program, hes seen improvements to his pain levels, strength and flexibility.

For Victor, safety and supervision are key. My Clinical Exercise Physiologist challenges me to do more and I know the exercises he prescribes to me are safe. I like the attention I get from the staff and Im confident in their advice.

Working with your Physician

After reading about LIVE WELLs clinical approach to health, Qamrul Mohammed joined as a North Delta member even before that clinic opened last spring.

Stacey Solomon has proudly shown off her curves in a gorgeous striped bikini while taking a bath with her baby son, Rex.

The mother-of-four took to Instagram to share the cute snap which she claimed to be the best self-timer picture she has ever taken.

In the wholesome snap, Stacey poses with her legs crossed while excitedly sticking up her two thumbs while gorgeous baby Rex smiles alongside her with a rubber duck in his hands.

The 30-year-old Loose Women star was testing out a tub divider, having previously revealed she couldn't bathe with her son due to her love of hot water and bath bombs.

Before heading to the Dancing On Ice studios to support her boyfriend and Rex's dad Joe Swash, Stacey decided to test out the divider which was sent to her by the company.

Although she tried to avoid it, some of the bath bomb's colour did seep into her son's side of the bath, but Stacey reassured fans that his water temperature had remained cooler.

She captioned the post: "Best self timer picture I've ever managed to get.

"It worked for about 15 minutes, now it's starting to seep through... But the temperature for Rex is still good, which is a win. Just no bath bomb next time! I LOVE IT".

Sharing a link to the product, she added: "Don't worry, we are on our way to see Joe now, we aren't still in the bath."

This comes days after the 30-year-old won huge praise from fans after showing a candid picture of herself at the pool with baby Rex.

The snap sees Stacey in a tropical two piece bikini, cradling her youngest son on her knee as they both sport huge grins on their faces.

As she posted it to Instagram , Stacey said she was proud of her body and wouldn't be changing a thing about herself in the new year.

January is often the time celebs leap on the weight loss bandwagon and plug diet products and exercise programs, but Stacey was happy to buck the trend.

"Why change something that brought me the most happiness I could ever imagine. That brought me the smiley seven month old in the picture and the most amazing 11 year old taking it. I wouldnt have it any other way," she mused.

Costa Rican government responds to Level 2 travel advisory from the United States – The Tico Times

Costa Rican authorities held a Tuesday evening press conference as a response to the Level 2 travel advisory from the U.S. State Department.

The advisory warns visitors to Costa Rica should exercise increased caution due to crime, a label the Central American government categorically rejected.

Below is a statement from Costa Ricas Foreign Minister, Manuel Ventura Robles, regarding the change:

Costa Rica and the United States of America maintain close and solid relations of friendship and cooperation based on mutual respect and a long tradition of values shared by democracy, human rights and freedom.

At the same time, more than 1.2 million U.S. citizens visit us every year to in an environment of peace, tranquility and security enjoy our natural beauties, the warm welcome by Costa Ricans and the human well-being of Costa Rica.

We are sure that U.S. tourists will continue to arrive in Costa Rica and will be able to tell other visitors of their country about our hospitality and our peace, of our beauties as famous artists, celebrities and other important personalities often do.

On this occasion, we express the energetic protest by the Government of Costa Rica over the decision to change the level in recommendations to U.S. tourists when visiting our country.

As a Government, we also hope to overcome this situation promptly and continue to deepen our relations between two sister nations to whom friendship and respect unites.

Over the first 11 months of 2019, more than half of the 2.8 million tourists who visited Costa Rica came from North America. Of those, nearly 1.2 million hailed from the United States.
