The best exercise to reduce visceral fat – what you should be doing – Express

It is therefore imperative to reduce visceral fat to stave off the risk of serious complications.

Exercise is a tried-and-tested method for burning the harmful belly fat and different forms of exercise have been evaluated for their visceral fat-burning ability.

One of the most authoritative assessments came in the form of a systematic review of different exercise regimes.

The systematic review and meta-analysis, published in the journal PLoS One, was the first to investigate the effect of exercise without diet on visceral fat specifically in overweight and obese adults.

Examples of aerobic exercise include swimming, running and cycling.

For optimal benefits, you should combine aerobic exercise with resistance training, such as lifting weights, advises Harvard Health.

"Thirty minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on most days plus resistance exercise a few days a week has been shown to reduce visceral fat," reports the health body.

Sit-ups tighten abdominal muscles, but they will not decrease visceral fat, however, it adds.

In addition to increasing the amount of exercise you do each week, it is important to overhaul your diet.

When it comes to reducing visceral fat, the diet that seems to come out on top is a low-carbohydrate diet.

In fact, many studies have shown that low-carb diets are more effective at reducing visceral fat than low-fat diets.

In an eight-week study including 69 overweight men and women, scientists found that people who followed a low-carb diet lost 10 percent more visceral fat and 4.4 percent more total fat than those on a low-fat diet.

Additionally, the ketogenic diet, which is a very low-carb diet, may also help reduce visceral fat.

A low-carb diet is one that restricts carbohydrates, primarily found in sugary foods, pasta, and bread.

You should also limit your intake of certain items to reduce visceral fat.

Several studies have shown that drinking too much alcohol may encourage fat to be stored as visceral fat, for example.

Scott and Sandi Borchetta are funding music education with a new grant program – Tennessean

As Nashville record company Big Machine celebrates 15 years of chart-topping success, label founder Scott Borchetta says hes setting sights on investing in the future of music.

Borchetta and wife Sandi Borchetta launched this week a $150,000 fund to aid non-profit music schools and education projects. The money plans to be distributed in $10,000 grants to 15 qualifying programs.

Applications opened Thursday via Music Has Value, a fund launched by the couple in 2015 to support those who make music, aspire to make music, and access and appreciate music.

Theres just not enough support in music education, said Scott Borchetta, the 58-year-old president and CEO of Big Machine, label home to Tim McGraw, Thomas Rhett, Sheryl Crow and more. Theres a lot of big challenges that the education system has. We look at this as a long-term investment in the culture of music.

Scott Borchetta, President and CEO, Big Machine Label Group was given the honor of saying "gentleman start your engines" during the 2019 Big Machine Vodka 400 at the Brickyard at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2019.(Photo: Michelle Pemberton/IndyStar)

Read along for highlights from an interview with Borchetta about the new program and how Big Machineapproaches new music after 15 years.

Who earns a shareof the $150,000 grant remains mostly open-ended. The application asks for a brief description of the project, how it plans to be implemented and what impact may look like, but doesnt demand how the money must be spent.

It would be foolish for someone not on the ground floor to decide what resources teachers or students need, Borchetta said.

We wanna empower those people who are requesting it, Borchetta said. And give them ownership. When you do that, the pride rings through so loudly and that passes on to the kids.

And the seismic impact of COVID-19 on education didnt sway his decision to implement these funds, but it did elevate the needs for so many, he said.

What they need is support and they need financial aid, Borchetta said. And theyre on the ground with those kids.

Fifteen grants coincide with a decade-and-a-half of Borchetta spearheading Big Machine, an anniversary that arrives in an unprecedented year for music business. Due to COVID-19 precautions, touring remains indefinitely halted and music promotion continues to be a virtual exercise for most artists.

Still, despite the heavyweight gut punch tossed by the global pandemic in March, Big Machine continues to roll out music from notable Nashville artists at capacity, Borchetta said. For example, the label pushed McGraws new studio album Here On Earth, to No. 1 on Billboards Top Country Album chart this summer and, this week, scored the most country radio ads for a new Pearce single, Next Girl.

And, as streaming molds modern music consumption habits, Borchetta said the label continues to focus on single releases.

(Fans) consume music faster than ever, they dont want 15 or 20 songs at a time, Borchetta said, adding: If you pull apart the biggest consuming albums every week, its not that all of those tracks have huge consumption, its a handful of them. You still want platinum-consuming albums. But you need those big singles that can cross terrestrial (radio) and digital boundaries. You have to have that.

Theres not a world where we can survive that we dont have hundreds of millions of streams. We are there.

How does Borchetta approach the future? With a deep bench, he said.

I always refer to the label as the Lakers, Borchetta said. Whether it was Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabar or Kobe Bryant and Shaq and now LeBron -- youre always going to have superstars. Were always working on making sure weve got that deep bench.

And he said filling that bench with the next line of top talent never gets old.

That probably drives me, Borchetta said, adding: I still love getting No. 1 records. Thats always exciting. Between discovery and success falls everything else.

OPERATIONAL PROGRESS DURING THE PERIOD AND POST-CLOSING

NEXT-GENERATION ANTIMICROBIALS

DNV3837: Initiation of Phase II clinical trial in Clostridioides difficile infections

The Phase II trial testing the antibiotic candidate DNV3837 in Clostridioides difficile1 gastrointestinal infections (CDIs), enrolled its first patient in January2.

This trial aims to evaluate the efficacy of DNV3837 in a pathological context, in patients with moderate to severe CDI, as well as to consolidate safety and pharmacokinetic data. The trial is multicentric and concentrated in the United States where prevalence is higher and regulatory authorities are looking for new therapeutic options.

Post-closing3, DEINOVE confirmed the continuation of this trial despite the tense health context in the United States, related to the Covid-19 pandemic. Several of the investigative centers have maintained their clinical research activities and continue to screen and include patients. The DEINOVE scientific team and the CRO Medpace are following the situation closely.

AGIR program: DEINOVE validates the second key milestone and receives 1.5M from Bpifrance 4

The challenge for AGIR is to accelerate exploration of the antibiotic activities of multiple strains under various conditions in order to rapidly detect new structures.

The first stage of the program had led to the setting up of a robotic platform for extracting and screening strains. The second stage allowed the screening of an increasing number of strains, the validation of the automated tools developed by DEINOVE and the detection of some thirty hits. The characterization of active extracts makes it possible to identify potential new, previously unknown, bioactive molecules.

According to the terms of the collaborative research program selected in 2017 by the Investments for the Future program, the results obtained enabled DEINOVE to validate the EC2 of the AGIR program and to receive 1.5M.

NEXT-GENERATION ACTIVE INGREDIENTS

New industrial production of Phytoene to supply the market5

In early 2020 DEINOVE launched the production of a new batch of phytoene-based active ingredient to meet the needs of its distributors. The product has been sampled by nearly 100 brands, which are carrying out various projects for the development of cosmetic products incorporating this active ingredient.

Launch of a new active ingredient based on Neurosporene, an exclusive carotenoid6

Neurosporene is a novel carotenoid on the market with exceptional antioxidant properties. It has the particularity of absorbing blue light, responsible for early aging of the skin, including the formation of brown spots. Efficacy studies, particularly clinical studies, have demonstrated its beneficial effect on the health and beauty of the skin.

The introduction of this active ingredient to the market was initiated in April 2020.

Commercial launch of the new active ingredient co-developed with Hallstar France7

BIOME Oloactif is an active ingredient produced from a rare extremophilic bacterium that DEINOVE has managed to cultivate, and whose potential is reinforced by the original oleo-eco-extraction technique patented by Hallstar France (formerly Olos). Thanks to its unique composition of innovative active molecules, it helps strengthen the skins barrier function.

The official launch of this active ingredient took place in April 2020.

The planned partnership with Sharon Laboratories is finally abandoned

In February 2020 DEINOVE announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Israeli group Sharon Laboratories8 for the development and marketing of an innovative range of bio-based cosmetic ingredients. This agreement was to be finalized before the end of March 2020. The rapid development of the Covid-19 pandemic and the deterioration of economic conditions doomed this project9, given the significant uncertainties in the short term. DEINOVE retained the $200K collected on the signature of the MoU.

FINANCIAL RESULTS FOR THE FIRST HALF OF 2020

The consolidated financial statements of the DEINOVE Group for the first half of 2020 include the accounts of the Company, as well as the accounts of the wholly-owned subsidiary MORPHOCHEM.

OPERATING REVENUE

The Group recorded 596K in operating revenue over H1, mainly comprising the payment by Bpifrance of the grant corresponding to the completion of the second key milestone of the AGIR program for an amount of 381K, and the amount received from Sharon Laboratories on the signature of the MoU (181K), amount that was retained despite the abandonment of the partnership caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the deterioration of economic conditions.

For the first half of 2019, operating income amounted to 405K, mainly including the part of the grant corresponding to the first milestone of the AGIR program (397K).

During the first half of 2020, the Groups operating expenses reached 5.5M, of which 81% was spent on R&D activities.

When comparing H1 2019 and H1 2020, operating expenses are down 17% (-1.1M). Subcontracting and external study expenses, which mainly include CRO services related to the DNV3837 clinical study, decreased by 28%, mainly due to the internalization of certain operations. The Rents, Maintenance and Servicing costing item decreased by 31%, as a result of the second quarter rent waiver as part of the Covid-19 support measures. Miscellaneous Expenses (+38% over the period), include 36K of OCA-related costs. Fees increased by +10% due to costs incurred with Sharon Laboratories (76K) and pre-financing costs of the R&D Tax Credit (23K). The Missions and Travel item is down -66%.

Staff expenses decreased by -16%, with 2 FTE less and use of partial activity for the teams based in Lille. Depreciation, Amortization and Provisions (-7%), include a provision for risk on the amount of the R&D Tax Credit 2019 (28K) and 2020 (9K). The 2019 R&D Tax Credit has since been formally validated for its full amount by the tax authorities.

NET INCOME

The consolidated net loss for the period amounts to 4.6M. It includes a negative financial result of -6K mainly comprising a gain on securities transactions related to the liquidity contract (+5K) and financial expenses related to leasing, pre-financing of the R&D Tax Credit and foreign exchange losses (- 11K in total).

Income tax includes almost exclusively the R&D Tax Credit. The Groups receivable for the first half year was estimated at 544K (compared to 1.140K in H1 2019).

The Exceptional Result at June 30, 2020 is mainly composed of a provision of 38K related to certain expenses charged to the 2019 and 2020 R&D Tax Credit (including 28K for 2019). The eligibility of these expenses on the 2019 R&D Tax Credit has since been validated by the Direction Dpartementale des Finances Publiques (Public Finance Departmental Director) by a letter dated 04/09/2020.

FINANCIAL SITUATION

Financial requirements for the first half of the year mainly concerned operating expenses, for 4.9M (excluding depreciation and amortization), to which were added investments in laboratory equipment (including lease payments) for 0.1M.

Over the same period, the Group received 1.5M in public aid under the AGIR program and 2.1M under the 2019 R&D Tax Credit (via pre-financing by Socit Gnrale Factoring). DEINOVE received the sum of 2.5M (net) under the second and third tranches of the OCA subscribed by the ESGO Fund (L1 Capital). At June 30, 2010, the Groups net financial position amounted to +3.2M.

A family favorite in Concord, the Wicked FIT 5k is a Halloween costume-themed virtual 5k run/walk that will benefit programs for families and individuals experiencing homelessness in New Hampshire.

Families in Transition-New Horizons will host their 9th annual Wicked FIT Run on Oct. 31. The Halloween-themed event is being held as a virtual 5k. People from all around the country can participate by sporting costumes and walking or running in their community and peer-to-peer fundraising leading up to the event date. Proceeds from sponsorships and event registrations benefit programs supporting families and individuals experiencing homelessness and food insecurity in the Granite State. The event kicks off with a live boadcast on Facebook at 9:30 a.m. on the morning of Halloween, and registrants are encouraged to share their journey with pictures and videos on social media.

This is a fantastic opportunity for families to get in the Halloween spirit with the uncertainty of trick-or-treating schedules in various communities, said Michelle Casale, events manager of FIT-NH. Weve received wonderful feedback from our 2020 virtual event attendees. This is our last virtual 5k fundraiser of the year, it supports the demands of a much-needed cause, and we invite everyone to join in the fun.

FIT-NH operates homelessness services, food programs, emergency shelters, and affordable housing around New Hampshire, including 16 apartments in Concord that serve as homes for families and individuals experiencing homelessness. They also conduct homeless outreach and evidence-based case management in Concord and Manchester. The FIT-NH Outreach team works to eliminate barriers to successfully obtain housing and sustain recovery, including connecting people to resources and access to shelter and referrals to substance use treatment and mental health services.

The support of our generous sponsors and event attendees allow us to meet the demand of our programs, said Pamela Hawkes, vice president of resource development. Without them, we would not be able to maintain essential services and continue to adapt and pivot our programs during this trying time. We encourage businesses and members of the community who are committed to providing vital resources to get involved.

The event is supported by contributions from key sponsors and partners, including Community Partner Sponsor Spectrum Marketing Companies. Individuals and teams can register online to create their own fundraising pages and participate in the fundraising efforts leading up to Oct. 31. Participants can walk or run the event anywhere anytime; in their neighborhood, on a trail, or on a treadmill and share photos and videos with FIT-NH on their Facebook or Instagram pages.

Research: Why Breathing Is So Effective at Reducing Stress – Harvard Business Review

Executive Summary

Anxiety in the workplace is a serious problem. What can you do to stay calm, rational, and productive when dealing with a stressful situation? In several recently published studies, the authors explored the effectiveness of different techniques and found that one method SKY Breath Meditation offered the best results for both immediate and long-term stress reduction. This comprehensive series of breathing and meditation exercises engages the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the bodys rest and digest activities, helping you to calm down and think rationally in the face of stress. These simple techniques can help you sustain greater emotional wellbeing and lower your stresslevels at work and beyond.

When U.S. Marine Corp Officer Jake D.s vehicledrove over an explosive device in Afghanistan, he looked down to see his legs almost completely severed below the knee. At that moment, he remembered a breathing exercise he had learned in a book for young officers. Thanks to that exercise, he was able to stay calm enough to check on his men, give orders to call for help, tourniquet his own legs, and remember to prop them up before falling unconscious. Later, he was told that had he not done so, he would have bled to death.

If a simple breathing exercise could help Jake under such extreme duress, similar techniques can certainly help the rest of us with our more common workplace stresses. The combination of the Covid-19 pandemic and battles for social justice have only exacerbated the anxiety that many of us feel every day, and studies show that this stress is interfering with our ability to do our best work. But with the right breathing exercises, you can learn to handle your stress and manage negative emotions.

In two recently published studies, we explored several different techniques and found that a breathing exercise was most effective for both immediate and long-term stress reduction.

In the first study run by our research team at Yale, we evaluated the impact of three wellbeing interventions:

Participants were randomly assigned to one of the three programs or to a control group (no intervention). We found that the participants who practiced SKY Breath Meditation experienced the greatest mental health, social connectedness, positive emotions, stress levels, depression, and mindfulness benefits.

In a second study, conducted at the University of Arizona, SKY Breath Meditation was compared to a workshop that taught more conventional, cognitive strategies for stress-management (in other words, how to change your thoughts about stress). Both workshops were rated similarly by participants and they both produced significant increases in social connectedness. However, SKY Breathing was more beneficial in terms of immediate impact on stress, mood, and conscientiousness, and these effects were even stronger when measured three months later.

Before and after the workshops, participants underwent a stress task that simulated a high-pressure performance situation, akin to presenting at a business meeting. In anticipation of the stressful performance, the group that had completed the cognitive workshop showed elevated breathing and heart rates, as expected. In contrast, the SKY Breathing group held steady in terms ofbreathing and heart rate, suggesting the program had instilled in them a buffer against the anxiety typically associated with anticipating a stressful situation. This meant that they were not only in a more positive emotional state, but also that they were more able to think clearly and effectively perform the task at hand.

Similarly, in a study with veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan who struggled with trauma, we found that not only did SKY Breath Meditation normalize their anxiety levels after just one week, but they also continued to experience the mental health benefits a full year later.

So what makes breathing so effective? Its very difficult totalk your way out of strong emotions like stress, anxiety, or anger.Just think about how ineffective it is when a colleague tells you to calm down in a moment of extreme stress. When we are in a highly stressed state, our prefrontalcortex the part of our brain responsible for rational thinking is impaired, so logic seldom helps to regain control. This can make it hard to think straight or be emotionally intelligent with your team. But with breathing techniques, it is possible to gain some mastery over your mind.

Research shows that different emotions are associated with different forms of breathing, and so changing how we breathe can change how we feel. For example, when you feel joy, your breathing will be regular, deep and slow. If you feelanxious or angry, your breathing will be irregular, short, fast, and shallow. When you follow breathing patterns associated with different emotions, youll actually begin to feel those corresponding emotions.

How does this work?Changing the rhythm of your breath can signal relaxation, slowing your heart rate and stimulating the vagus nerve, whichruns from the brain stem to the abdomen, and is part of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the bodys rest and digest activities (in contrast to the sympathetic nervous system, which regulates many of our fight or flight responses).Triggering your parasympathetic nervous system helpsyou start to calm down. You feel better. And your ability tothink rationally returns.

To get an idea of how breathing can calm you down, try changing the ratio of your inhale to exhale. This approach is one of several common practices that use breathing to reduce stress. When you inhale, your heart rate speeds up. When you exhale, it slows down. Breathing in for a count of four and out for a count of eight for just a few minutes can start to calm your nervous system. Remember: when you feel agitated, lengthen your exhales.

While a short breathing exercise like this can be effective in the moment, a comprehensive daily breathing protocol such as the SKY Breath Meditation technique will train your nervous system for resilience over the long run. These simple techniques can help you sustain greater wellbeing and lower your stresslevels at work and beyond.

Adidas Is Taking These New Steps to Address Its Race Issues And How Beyonc Is Playing a Role – Footwear News

Adidas says its doing the work to create lasting change across an organization (and world) that has recently had its share of diversity and inclusion challenges and its tapping into its star-studded celebrity roster to get a boost.

The Germany-based athletic brand today keeping in theme with its goal of greater transparency provided an update on its progress toward several diversity and inclusion targets it outlined in June.

Among the areas where the company said it has been making headway include in hiring and career development, where it said it already is outpacing some of its goals. Adidas pledged in June to fill 30% of all new positions with Black and LatinX employees, and 50% of all positions with diverse talent of all categories. It is also targeting 20% to 23% Black and LatinX employees in corporate roles by 2025, and 12% in leadership positions in the U.S. by that time.

So far, the company said it is already hitting above those targets in the U.S. for Black and LatinX people at both Adidas and owned-brand Reebok.

Adidas is also joining forces with Beyonc with whom it has worked for the past two years committing $10 million over the next three years to fund BeyGOOD partner social programs, organizations and/or initiatives that help bring equity to those disproportionately impacted by social and racial injustice. As an immediate first step, Adidas has matched Beyoncs recent $1 million contribution to NAACP for BeyGOODs Black-Owned Small Business Impact Fund.

Adidas in June joined the growing roster of global corporations stepping up to recognize Juneteenth as a company holiday the company said today that it accepted that challenge from longtime collaborator, Pharrell Williams.

Regarding itsanti-discrimination and non-retaliation policy, Adidas said its since strengthened that part of its enterprise by, among other things, conducting a series oflistening sessions that included more than 700 employeesled by close to 40 leaders from the Committee to Accelerate Inclusion & Equality, executive board and senior leadership team. The athletic behemoth said its leadership team, including the executive board, has also participated in training sessions on creating accountability for inclusive, responsive leadership.

Adidas shared today that it is also chipping away at its goal to invest $120 million toward initiatives in the U.S. focused on ending racial injusticeand/or supporting Black communities through 2025.

One of its first initiatives is Close the Gap, which the company described as a program built in partnership with Impact Hub, the worlds largest network of social ventures and entrepreneurs, which will give its employees in North America and Germany, a chance to work with BIPOC-led social ventures. It said its also matching employee donations by 200% through DEED, its online donation platform, to support nonprofit organizations driving racial justice and human rights for underrepresented communities. This currently benefits the NAACP, the National Urban League, Campaign Zero, ACLU, The Innocence Project, Transgender Law Center and the Minnesota Freedom Fund).

Whats more, Adidas is dedicating some of its $120 million investment to developing young talent: It is collaborating with Reebok on a scholarship program that will provide debt relief for 50 Black and LatinX students at HBCUs, each receiving a grant of $10,000. It will also fund 50 university scholarships a year for Black and LatinX students at HBCUs over the next 5 years.

Reebok has separately pledged to invest $15 million over the next five years into Black and LatinX communities and organizations focused on ending racial injustice and plans to re-launch the Reebok Human Rights Award to support and honor activists who are working to dismantle systemic racism. The Boston-based brand further plans to Increase its focus on its non-profit school exercise program, BOKS, to Black and LatinX communities, including a new $200,000 grant program.

Stoked by national unrest over racial injustice stemming from the killing of George Floyd, years of internal dissension surrounding Adidas treatment of Black and other minority employees, had come to a head in June. Protests by Black employees and their allies as well as media reports recounting purported instances of discrimination at the brands North America HQ in Portland Ore., culminated in late June with the resignation of Karen Parkin, the companys head of Global Human Resources.

Earlier that month, a 13-member coalition representing more than 200 Adidas employees called for Parkins resignation. They cited comments she made last year at a company meeting in Boston at Reeboks HQ, where she described concerns over racial disparities as noise and further suggested the company did not need to take action as the criticisms were only present in its North America offices for Adidas.

The same coalition had also already delivered to Adidas North America management, including president Zion Armstrong, a 32-page deck, dubbed Our State of Emergency.

In addition to claims that management doesnt grasp the discrimination minorities might face and that the difference in perception is largest in Germany, the document had listed four major asks. The coalition had demanded the company invest in its Black employees; the Black community; the fight for racial justice and change for Black people and demonstrate accountability.

Adidas had respondedwith its new D&I initiatives.

This is a global effort, and we have global programs in place to support BIPOC communities, the company said today. Many of our early commitments were made in the U.S., but thats only the beginning. We are working to introduce similar programs in all of our markets, informed and developed by our employees. As we go forward, we will continue to strive for better, for those at the heart of our brand. Were making promising strides, but were only getting started.

Cardiac rehabilitation in India A way to go – The Times of India Blog

Cardiac rehabilitation is increasingly recognized as an integral component of the patient care with CVS diseases. Its application is a class 1 recommendation in most cardiovascular clinical practice guidelines.

Core component of cardiac rehabilitation

The main components of cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention are outlined in a detailed manner in a statement from American Heart Association and American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. The statement highlights the integral role of cardiac rehabilitation in secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

Interventions aim to optimize the risks of heart diseases. Healthy behavior and complying with that behavior reduces ill effects of cardiovascular diseases and promotes an active lifestyle for patients.

Physiological aspects focus on improvement in habits of exercises and tolerance towards it. Optimization of risk factors towards the heart, including improvement in lipid and lipoproteins, body weight, and blood glucose levels. An important role, however, especially for older people is functional independence.

Cardiac rehabilitation post PCI

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a safe, effective, and non-surgical treatment of coronary artery disease. The demand has increased exponentially since 1980, it has therefore become main choice of treatment for many individuals with coronary diseases. PCI aims at reduction of disease progression and improving the functionality of the heart in these individuals. Exercise is one of the major components for preventing cardiac diseases and it is a good strategy for rehabilitation.

Exercise programs that involve physical activity and counseling can make clinical outcomes better in the patients. Data indicates the benefits of exercise in improving quality of life and reducing occurrence of coronary heart disease among the general population.

Role of cardiac rehabilitation in heart failure

Heart failure is a major problem and this problem is constantly on the rise, worldwide. It is the most common reason for patients to be hospitalised. Hospitals records display that annual number of patients that have been discharged after a heart failure have risen since 1975, today the number has reached 1 million per year.

Statistics display that heart failure is a primary disease amongst the elderly and it affects 10% men and 8% women who are over 60 years of age. Developed nations have adapted strategies for risk reduction, prevention, and treatment.

In Asian countries theres a lot of data regarding the prevalence of heart failure, the risk of heart failure increases with age. People above 60 years of age in India is expected to increase from 105 million in 2011 to 376 million in 2051, as per reports. Intertwined with is the problem of increasing financial burden on the country and individual disablement resulting from this chronic disease, which is evident as exercise intolerance because of dyspnea and fatigue.

Studies are in progress to evaluate exercise training as an intervention for heart failure. Studies have seen positive outcome in the functional capacity, symptoms and quality of life when a patient is trained with a tailor-made exercise regime.

Various evidence supports the benefits of an exercise training for the stability in a heart failure patient who is receiving optimal medical treatment. Functional capacity improves symptoms of dyspnea, and fatigue reduces, and it benefits the quality of life.Trials have found improvement in exercise capacity. It has also been seen that there has been a modification of multiple measures of metabolic functions, vascular tone, cytokine production and neural activation.

Therefore, these suggest the important role of exercise in improvement of symptoms related to heart failure known as exercise intolerance.

Where the problem lies? (Author view)

I personally believe that in India we are concentrating on curing the disease without exploringits pattern or recurrence schedule. Patients are readmitting themselves with fresh blockages in the heart after a certain amount of time, it may be in a different part of an artery, but blockages have been present.

Steps have been taken to educate the patient about the dos and donts to prevent the reoccurrence of the blockages, but we are still way behind. According to a report by National Intervention Council of Cardiological Society of India, a total of 152,332 PCI procedures were performed in 332 centres in 2011. It was noticed that there was a growth of 28.8% as compared to the previous year. 13.6% of these were done in patients who were less than 40 years of age and 14.5% were done in patients whose age was more than 70 years. The report has clear mentions of the exponential rise each year in the PCI procedures and the trend of the younger population getting affected by the disease.

There may be various reasons for the occurrence of the above. My single point here is that after being aware of all the data and its increasing trend how many hospitals specializing in cardiology are displaying their interest in cardiac rehabilitation and how many centers have arranged for such rehabilitation. The number is negligible.

Looking at all the benefits of exercising in a heart failure patient, the emphasis is still very low, or one can say it is under prevalent in India. The reason for this is lack of facilities and infrastructure for cardiac rehabilitation and lack of awareness amongst cardiologist and masses about cardiac rehabilitation.

India definitely needs more therapists displaying interest in the underdeveloped cardiac rehabilitation and more cardiologist should back it up to provide better quality of life and help the patient in accommodating their dyspnea.

The future of cardiovascular disease treatment should be a mix of curative, preventive and providing a more conditioned state of health to the patients, where symptoms can be treated or prevented as closely as possible.
