Trainer aims to shed the stress for mothers – Warwick Beacon

By LAURA WEICK

Robert B. Foster, owner of RBF Fitness and Nutrition in Warwick, noticed that COVID-19 has caused people, especially busy mothers, to lose faith in their abilities. By addressing both ways to get in shape and deal with stress, he hopes to help those stuck at home navigate quarantine and beyond.

Although Foster trains people of all ages, genders and backgrounds, he has tailored one of his programs especially for mothers juggling working from home and taking care of children. Working with mothers has been a focus for Foster before the pandemic, but he found that social distancing during the pandemic has made mothers restless.

What I found with the quarantine is that people are really really frustrated, especially moms with distance learning going on, Foster said. Exercise became an outlet for them. It gave them something more to focus on and it gave them that personal development type stuff instead of just push-ups and squats.

Fosters approach to training begins with what he describes as a pain assessment. He consults clients regarding not just their physical health, but also emotional and mental health. He said many of his clients desires to get in shape are often motivated by issues such as stress and low self-esteem, which the pandemic has intensified among many.

When people want to get into better shape, its usually a deeper reason than I want to lose pounds, Foster said. You want to get deeper into what the pain is. I find the one that really gets deep are the ones who will see the program through, and those that dont fall off.

After determining clients physical and emotional needs, clients learn exercises that work for them. Foster recommends a combination of cardio and strength training depending on the clients abilities and goals.

Foster also has clients write down reasons they have difficulty exercising, and he found that one of the most common excuses is lack of time. He helps clients find gaps in their days so they can workout whenever they are free, even if its just a few 10 minute sessions each day. Foster said that people dont need expensive equipment for a good workout either: hes seen people use household objects like milk jugs or laundry detergent bottles instead of weights and still make progress.

People who are on a tight schedule want to keep it fast-paced, Foster said. Its keeping your body moving, keeping your heart pumping. Even low impact exercises done at a lower intensity give you a cardio effect.

Time management is something Foster knows all too well. Foster was always athletic growing up, and knew he wanted to work in fitness as early as high school. However, he ended up managing a restaurant for 20 years with personal training as a side gig that eventually became full time. As a father of five, he found that working full time in fitness has helped him manage his time better.

Having to work nights and weekends at a restaurant, I missed a lot of stuff, Foster said. The fitness thing started as just for fun in my home, but it grew into something bigger.

Foster also makes dietary recommendations to go with his workouts. He explained that good diets require food with substance instead of empty calories.

One big misconception is that its more expensive to eat healthy, Foster said. But the healthier food is more nutrient dense so you stay fuller longer, so you need less so you buy less. Dont shop too many days in advance, if at all possible. I shop every single day, sometimes twice a day, but that works for my schedule. But if you drop $300 a time, you might buy excess and be prone to overeating.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Foster is offering sessions and classes virtually as well as outdoors, with plans to reopen his indoor facility on 25 Coronado Road this Sunday. He hopes that by gaining strength through workouts, they also gain a sense of self-worth. Those interested in the program can contact Foster at (401)-359-4652 or rob@rbffitness.com. The first week of the program is free, and unlimited classes cost $125 per month.

The practice is open virtually and outdoors from 5:15 a.m. to 10 a.m., and later 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. A full schedule of sessions can be viewed at rbffitness.com. In-person sessions are limited to 15 people for outdoor sessions, and semi-private sessions are limited to up to three people.

Most people when they start with me, they have lower self esteem, but when going through the program its not just weight loss gains, but people feel more confident that they can run again and or can climb that rope, Foster said.

Fitbit’s $329 Sense watch monitors stress response and heart health – Engadget

This feeds into Fitbits renewed focus on helping users track and manage stress, which now goes beyond the guided breathing exercises already available on most of its wearables. The EDA sensor records and shows data on a graph in the Fitbit mobile app alongside the new Stress Management Score, which is yet another all-encompassing number that takes into account heart rate, sleep and activity data. The higher the number, the better your body is doing at physically managing stress. This number will change regularly, and when its on the low side, itll be coupled with advice on how to manage stress, breathing exercises you can do and other resources.

Users will likely be more familiar with the Senses ECG capabilities now that many wearables are trying to incorporate the technology. Fitbits feature works similarly to that on the Apple Watch Series 5: place two fingers on the corners of the Fitbit Sense for 30 seconds and itll take a reading of the electrical signals coming from your heart. ECG measurements have become popular in wearables because they allow a user to get a quick glimpse into their hearts health and possibly learn of early signs of conditions like atrial fibrillation. None of the most popular wearables on the market, including the Fitbit Sense or the Apple Watch, are considered medical devices, but they are capable of providing limited data that a user can then take to their doctor if they believe something isnt right.

Aside from these two features, there are two others that up the Senses health-monitoring game: a skin temperature sensor and high and low heart rate alerts. The former does exactly what youd expect it monitors your body temperature throughout the day and takes baseline measurements at night while youre sleeping so you can better understand fluctuations over time. The latter uses Fitbits updated heart rate monitoring technology to alert you when your pulse is above or below a certain BPM threshold.

Both of these are practical, albeit unexciting, features mostly because theyre automatic: you dont have to prompt the smartwatch to take your temperature or to check if your heart rate is sky high itll just do it. Also, changes in body temperature can be early signs of illness, showing up before other symptoms, and knowing when your heart rate suddenly increases can prompt you to take a deep breath, relax and possibly remove yourself from a stressful situation.

Fitbit

Most of the Sense smartwatchs extraordinary features lie under the hood as the actual wearable looks pretty similar to the companys Versa smartwatches. It has that familiar rounded square case with detachable bands, and now it supports infinity bands that look very close to those that come with the Apple Watch.

The Senses case is made of aluminum and stainless steel and it has a slightly larger AMOLED display than other Fitbit smartwatches. In addition to built-in GPS, it also has the new PurePulse 2.0 heart rate monitor, onboard storage for music, an SpO2 sensor, Fitbit Pay support and a new built-in speaker that lets compatible voice assistants reply to your queries audibly and lets you quick-answer phone calls (while your smartphone is on and nearby, of course there are no LTE capabilities on this device).

Fitbits trying to do two things with the Sense smartwatch: compete with devices like the Apple Watch and the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3, and encourage users to pay for Fitbit Premium. The first is a bit more obvious than the second: the Senses spec sheet puts it squarely in competition with other premium smartwatches and features like EDA and ECG measurements emphasize its potential as a long-term health device.

But that last fact feeds into the companys apparent strategy for Fitbit Premium: give users devices that can track tons of health data, give them just enough of that information to satisfy most peoples needs and put the rest behind a paywall. The most detailed data for Fitbits advanced health metrics, such as the breakdown of how that new Stress Management Score is calculated, will only be available to Fitbit Premium users. In addition to data, Fitbits continuously adding resources to Premium things like meditation sessions, exercise programs and healthy eating routines to persuade users to pay $10 per month or $80 per year for the service.

To reduce the risk of COVID-19 spreading, we recommend that shareholders refrain from attending the Extraordinary General Meeting in person and instead cast their votes by correspondence or proxy. The Company will also reduce its number of representatives at the Extraordinary General Meeting to reduce the risk of infection.

Agenda

Items on the agenda, including complete proposals:In light of the contemplated listing of the Company in the United States and the offering of American Depositary Shares, the Board of Directors proposes a number of items to be approved by the Extraordinary General Meeting including in relation to the authorization to undertake the offering, U.S. specific risk management and the remuneration level and structure. The complete proposals are set out below.

In general, the Board of Directors believes that the offering of American Depositary Shares and the U.S. listing will benefit the Company and its shareholders as it would provide additional capital to fund the Companys product candidate, arimoclomol for the treatment of NPC through regulatory approval, support the Companys further clinical development of its product candidate for other indications, including ALS, sIBM and neurological Gaucher disease and establish a public market for the American Depositary Shares and facilitate future access to the public capital markets.

Item 1: Approval of amendment to an authorization to the Board of Directors to increase the share capital of the Company without pre-emption rights for existing shareholdersFor the purposes of ensuring flexibility and facilitate the contemplated capital increase related to the offering of American Depositary Shares and the U.S. listing, the Board of Directors proposes to amend Article 3.1 in the Articles of Association with the following wording:

In the period until 26 March 2025, the Board of Directors is authorised to increase the Companys share capital in one or more issues of new shares without pre-emption rights for the Companys existing shareholders by up to a nominal amount of DKK 10,815,000. The capital increase shall take place at market price as determined by the Board of Directors and shall be effected by cash payment, debt conversion or contribution in kind.

Item 2: Approval of an authorization to the Board of Directors to decide whether a general meeting shall be held fully by electronic means In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic including the prohibition imposed on larger gatherings as well as to ensure flexibility with respect to future general meetings of the Company, the Board of Directors proposes to adopt a new Article 4.3 of the Articles of Association with the following wording to authorize the Board of Directors to decide that general meetings may be held completely or partially by electronic means:

If the Board of Directors finds it appropriate, and if the general meeting can be conducted in a technically safe manner, the Board of Directors may decide that the general meeting shall be held fully or partially as an electronic general meeting. If so decided, shareholders will be able to attend, express their opinion and vote at the general meeting by electronic means. Accordingly, the current Articles 4.3-4.7 will be re-numbered to Articles 4.4-4.8.

Item 3: Approval of amendment to Article 6.6 of the Articles of Association regarding exercise of voting rights The Board of Directors proposes that the current Article 6.6 of the Articles of Association be amended as follows:

Each share of the nominal value of DKK 1 shall carry 1 vote. A person registered as a holder of shares of the Company in VP Securities A/Sand acting in a professional capacity on behalf of other natural or legal persons, including holders of American Depositary Shares representing shares of the Company, may exercise voting rights attached to any such shares in a manner that is not identical to the exercise of the voting rights attached to other shares of the Company held by such person

Item 4: Approval of an authorization to the Board of Directors to let the Company indemnify the Executive Management and employees in relation to certain claims related to the offering of American Depositary Shares and the listing of the Company in the United States to be included in the Articles of AssociationThe Board of Directors proposes that the Extraordinary General Meeting authorizes the Board of Directors to resolve to let the Company indemnify the Executive Management and employees of the Company and its subsidiaries in relation to certain claims related to the offer, sale and listing of the Companys securities in the United States and in respect of the Companys reports filed with or furnished to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission thereafter.

It is the view of the Board of Directors that the proposal is necessary in order to attract, motivate and retain qualified members to the Executive Management and employees. The Board of Directors has concluded that the planned offer, sale and listing of the Companys securities in the United States entails a significantly increased risk exposure for the Executive Management and for certain employees of the Company and its subsidiaries, which significantly exceeds the level of exposure that would normally be expected as a member of the Executive Management or as an employee of a Danish listed company. On this basis, the Board of Directors finds that it is necessary and in the Companys interest to be able to indemnify members of the Executive Management and employees of the Company and its subsidiaries for certain claims made personally against such persons in connection with their services to the Company.

If the proposal is adopted, a new article 9.2 will be included in the Articles of Association of the Company with the following wording:

The Board of Directors are authorized to resolve to let the Company indemnify members of the Executive Management and employees of the Company or its subsidiaries for certain claims against these individuals in connection with their services to the Company.

The Companys indemnification covers claims and reasonable legal costs arising from the offer, sale and listing of the Companys securities in the United States and/or the Companys subsequent status as a listed company in the United States, including in respect of the Companys reports filed with or furnished to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission thereafter.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, the Companys indemnification shall not cover the following claims:

The indemnification is limited to a maximum amount per claim per person equivalent to the gross proceeds obtained by the Company in connection with the offering of American Depositary Shares in the United States.

The indemnification shall remain in force for a period of five years after the resignation of the indemnified person from the Company or its subsidiaries, if the claims made within such period are related to such persons services to the Company.

Item 5: Approval of indemnification of the Board of Directors related to the offering of American Depositary Shares and the listing of the Company in the United StatesThe Board of Directors proposes that the Extraordinary General Meeting approve that the Board of Directors shall be indemnified by the Company in relation to certain claims related to the offer, sale and listing of the Companys securities in the United States and in respect of the Companys reports filed with or furnished to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission thereafter.

It is the view of the Board of Directors that the proposal is necessary in order to attract, motivate and retain qualified members to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors has concluded that the planned offer, sale and listing of the Companys securities in the United States entails a significantly increased risk exposure for the Board of Directors, which significantly exceeds the level of exposure that would normally be expected as a member of the Board of Directors in a Danish listed company. On this basis, the Board of Directors finds that it is necessary and in the Companys interest to indemnify members of the Board of Directors for certain claims made personally against such board members in connection with their services to the Company. The indemnification will become effective as of the date of approval by the Extraordinary General Meeting.

The Companys indemnification covers claims and reasonable legal costs arising from the offer, sale and listing of the Company in the United States and/or the Companys subsequent status as a listed company in the United States, including in respect of the Companys reports filed with or furnished to the U.S.

The indemnification shall remain in force for a period of five years after the resignation of the member of the Board of Directors from the Board of Directors, if the claims made within such period are related to such persons service as member of the Board of Directors.

Item 6: Approval of adjustments to the Companys Remuneration Policy The Board of Directors proposes the following adjustments to the Companys Remuneration Policy to be approved by the Extraordinary General Meeting in light of the Companys contemplated listing in the United States and as result of an external benchmark analysis of comparable peer companies in order to ensure that the level and structure of remuneration for the Board of Directors and Executive Management remain attractive in order to attract, motivate and retain qualified professionals:

The Board of Directors proposed and updated Remuneration Policy is set out in Appendix 1.

Item 7: Approval of remuneration of the Board of Directors for 2020In light of the U.S. listing, the results of an external benchmark analysis of comparable peer companies, and with the view of continuously attracting, motivating and retaining qualified members to the Board of Directors in line with the principles set out in the Remuneration Policy to be approved under item 6 above, the Board of Directors proposes that the following remuneration level for 2020 be approved by the Extraordinary General Meeting with effect from July 1, 2020 and on a proportionate basis for the remainder of the current financial year:

The members of the Board of Directors will receive annual supplementary fees for their work in the Companys Audit Committee, Remuneration Committee, and Nomination Committee. The Board of Directors proposes that the Extraordinary General Meeting approve the following supplementary fees for 2020 be approved by the Extraordinary General Meeting with effect from July 1, 2020 and on a proportionate basis for the remainder of the current financial year:

In addition and as approved by the Annual General Meeting held on March 26, 2020, members of the Board of Directors may receive a fixed travel allowance, as determined by the Board of Directors, and be reimbursed for expenses in connection with board meetings (e.g. related to travel and accommodation). Further, the Company may pay or reimburse social security duties and similar taxes imposed by public authorities in relation to board fees.

Item 8: Approval of share-based remuneration for the Board of DirectorsIn light of the U.S. listing, the results of an external benchmark analysis of comparable peer companies, and with the view of continuously attracting, motivating and retaining qualified members to the Board of Directors, the Board of Directors proposes that the Extraordinary General Meeting approves a new grant of share-based remuneration for 2020 in the form of restricted share units corresponding to 50% of each Board members fixed annual base fee and up to 100% of any new Board members fixed annual base fee, such base fee to include additional base fees to the Chairman and Deputy Chairman but excluding any additional fees for committee membership. The new grant of restricted share units for 2020 will be made pursuant to and in accordance with the principles set out in the revised Remuneration Policy approved by the Extraordinary General Meeting under item 6 above.

Exercise of the new grant of restricted share units will be contingent on certain conditions including (i) the initiation or completion of an offering and listing of American Depositary Shares in the United States and (ii) that the individual member of the Board of Directors does not exercise the restricted share units granted in March 2020 and approved at the Annual General Meeting on March 26, 2020. Accordingly, the value of the grants of share-based remuneration to the Board of Directors made in 2020 does not exceed 50% of the Board members fixed annual base fee, including additional base fees to the Chairman and Deputy Chairman but excluding any additional fees for committee membership, and up to 100% of any new Board members fixed annual base fee as an initial on-boarding grant, such base fee to include additional base fees to the Chairman and Deputy Chairman but excluding any additional fees for committee membership. The taxation of the individual board members on the basis the share-based remuneration is of no concern to the Company, save that the Company may provide a tax gross-up for any additional taxation imposed as a result of non-exercise of restricted share units granted in 2020.

Item 9: Election of new member of the Board of DirectorsThe Board of Directors proposes to elect Carrolee Barlow as new member of the Board of Directors. Please see Appendix 2 for a description of the nominated candidates qualifications and positions, including information about other executive/management functions held by the candidate in Danish and foreign companies.

Item 10: Approval of authorization of the Chairman of the meetingThe Board of Directors proposes that the Chairman of the Extraordinary General Meeting is, with a right of substitution, authorized to file the resolutions passed by the general meeting with the Danish Business Authority and to make any such changes and additions as the Danish Business Authority may require as a condition for registering or approving the resolutions passed by the general meeting.

Adoption requirementsThe proposals under item 1-4 on the agenda shall be passed by at least two-thirds of the votes cast as well as at least two-thirds of the share capital represented at the Extraordinary General Meeting, cf. Article 7.2 of the Articles of Association.

The proposals under item 5-10 on the agenda shall be passed by a simple majority of votes cast, cf. Article 7.1 of the Articles of Association.

CrimFit Nutrition Program brings exercise and nutrition education to thousands of Flint kids at home – Model D

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues and Flint kids begin online-only schooling, opportunities for physical exercise and nutrition education will be scarce. But a team of Crim Fitness Foundation (Crim) staffers is working to address that by bringing the Crims Nutrition Program (CrimFit) out of the classroom and into families' homes.

The Crim is no stranger to Flint families' needs, as it has been implementing health-oriented programming in the citys public school system for years. With the COVID-19 pandemic preventing Crim staff from visiting children at school, their education methods have had to change.

Meredith Sherman leads CrimFit programming.

To continue programming this year, the Crim is using funding from Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) grants from Michigan Fitness Foundation (MFF). SNAP-Ed is an education program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture that teaches people eligible for SNAP how to live healthier lives. As a State Implementing Agency for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, MFF offers competitive grant funding for local and regional organizations to conduct SNAP-Ed programming throughout Michigan.

SNAP-Ed funded programs are tailored to their communities' needs. In Flint, CrimFit focuses on limited access to healthy, affordable foods and the unhealthy eating and exercise habits that result.

Sharon Davenport, Crim program director of physical activity, sports, and nutrition, says her teams goal is to increase fruit and vegetable consumption and increase daily physical activity.

To many, that may sound like an obvious step to take. But in a city where many families cannot afford to make healthy eating or physical activity a priority, introducing fruits and vegetables and scheduled exercise is easier said than done.

By working with children from kindergarten to eighth grade, CrimFit is playing the long game and introducing health-conscious habits during children's most important developmental years.

We are really working to introduce them to new foods that they havent had, new ways of using foods that they already have, and creating a healthier environment at home, Davenport says.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, CrimFit delivered PE-Nut (Physical Education and Nutrition Working TogetherTM) programming that included six visits to every classroom in kindergarten, second, fourth, and sixth grades, and Linking LessonsTM programming in eighth grade, in around 17 schools over the course of an academic year.

Kelsey Crossman leads CrimFit programming.

Samantha Farah, project manager for the Crim, says those visits introduce new foods to kids, as well as reintroducing known foods in new recipes in the hopes that kids will learn to like them.

Its also about giving them the opportunity to taste things," Farah says. "Kids could say, Oh, I hate carrots.' Then we try to present them in a different way, and then theyre like, Oh, actually, these arent so bad.

While the main focus is on kids, Davenport says success can be limited if parents and community members dont embrace the same habits.

Like Davenport, Farah agrees that while introducing veggies and fruits to students is a good way to start, unless kids see their parents eat or cook similarly at home, their taste for healthy foods wont stick.

CrimFit reaches families where they eat, live, learn, shop, work, and play. I think weve done a really good job of really trying to involve families and the community," Davenport says.

To make sure some of these habits make it back home, CrimFit hosts "tasting tables" where parents and kids can try foods together. From there, parents are sent home with new and healthy recipes to try.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, the CrimFit team has had to try new ways of distributing information and promoting physical activity.

Jared Badour, a program coordinator for the Crim, is one of the team members who would regularly visit schools. Over the summer, Badour and other CrimFit staff members recorded over 50 lessons on nutrition and exercise for kids to watch over the course of the school year.

As with the program's pre-COVID-19 nutrition education lessons, Badour says CrimFit is working on taking a multifaceted approach in order to reach as many students as possible through different media.

Jared Badour leads a class in strengthening exercises.

Badour says CrimFit in collaboration with MFF is currently planning on hosting outdoor physical activity demonstrations while closely following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

You cant even be in a gym right now, so we are planning on coordinating with local parks and putting out information to neighborhoods and parents to let people know what were planning, Badour says. Im definitely excited about that. I wouldnt say it's back to normal, but it's an in-between where we can be in person but still socially distance.

The COVID-19 pandemic has cast a shadow of uncertainty over almost every aspect of life. Even now, many parents, teachers, and children are not sure what the coming months will look like. Despite this, CrimFit and its partners have made it a priority to provide consistent and effective nutrition education and physical activity promotion to thousands of Flint families.

When youre well-fed, when you have the proper amount of exercise, especially for kids, theyre better learners," Farah says. "That's why we do it. We want to improve those overall health outcomes."

TL;DR: Goplus treadmills are up to 22% off at Amazon as of Aug. 24. (But hurry, these deals of the day will go fast.)

When the pandemic first hit the U.S., we saw a huge increase in home gym equipment sales because no one was able to go to the actual gym anymore. While dumbbells have experienced a months-long shortage, other exercise equipment like treadmills have been able to consistently stay in stock.

We've even seen some decent discounts on treadmills over the last couple months, and as of Aug. 24, there's a whole slew of Goplus treadmills on sale for Amazon's deal of the day. Here are a few of the treadmills included in the sale:

If you're working from home, this is a super cool treadmill to get. It functions as a standard treadmill with handles for gripping and heart rate monitoring, but you can also fold the bar down to convert it into an under-desk treadmill. This means you can get your steps in any time of the day. The machine features a 2.25 horsepower motor that stays relatively quiet. It's lightweight and easy to move about the house and it's decked out with features like Bluetooth speakers and a remote control.

Maybe you already have a treadmill, but you've always dreamed of working at a treadmill desk. This option is for you. It sits under a standing desk (not included) and is slim enough to be stored under the couch or bed and out of the way. The machine reaches up to 4 mph, so it's best for walking or jogging and it comes with a remote that allows you to control your speed and exercise programs.

Opt for a heftier piece of equipment here with a more standard folding treadmill this one does not go under a desk. It has a built-in Bluetooth speaker and a nice LED display. While it is a bit bulky, this treadmill folds up nicely for easy storage.

This is another standard treadmill suitable for walking, jogging, and running it goes up to 7.5 mph. The LCD display shows you metrics including time, distance, calories, speed, pulse, and incline. This folding treadmill has 12 workout programs built in to help you reach your fitness goals.

Updating My Workout Wardrobe Is the Only Motivation I Need to Get Moving – Yahoo Lifestyle

So, I'd be lying if I said I was keeping up with that well-thought-out workout plan I came up with at the beginning of stay-at-home orders. I've become a little too comfortable with doing the, well, bare minimum to keep me semi in shape.

Within seconds of scrolling the site, my motivation to get myself on my mat and logged into that Zoom pilates class I've been RSVPing "maybe" to for months skyrocketed. SIUE Mental Performance Coaches Partner With STL Gallagher Teams To Give Players Mental Edge – RiverBender.com

EDWARDSVILLE Keep your head in the game. Its a common sports phrase that points to the importance of mental focus in competition.

As many athletics organizations had to limit or place in-person training on hold amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Club (SLSG) used the opportunity to strengthen players mental training. This summer, they partnered with Southern Illinois University Edwardsvilles Exercise and Sport Psychology graduate program to pair mental performance coaches with athletes.

Mental performance coaches work with individuals to help them handle the challenges they experience as athletes, said Lindsay Ross-Stewart, PhD, graduate program director and sport psychology consultant for the SIUE Cougars. People often think about sport psychology skills as being something for elite athletes, but skills such as how to handle ones emotions, dealing with pressure, staying focused and being confident are incredibly important for youth athletes, as well.

Seven graduate students were each matched with a SLSG youth team, meeting four times to teach topics on what is sport psychology, goal setting, dealing with stressors and confidence building techniques.

One of the unique outcomes of everyone being at home was that coaches and teams were looking for ways to use that time to gain a mental edge, since they couldnt physically practice, Ross-Stewart explained. The coaches learned the mental techniques that were taught to their athletes, so they can refer to them all season.

We are grateful for the opportunity that the SIUE staff and students provided for our membership, said St. Louis Scott Gallagher Illinois Program Director Shawn Hewitt. Allowing the players to meet virtually to talk through topics that directly impact them proved to be a valuable resource to aid in the players development. Discussing these topics also helped elevate our coaches understanding of the mental side of the athlete and team encounters on and off the field. We look forward to working with Dr. Lindsay Ross-Stewart and her students this upcoming year.

This was a great opportunity for our players to focus on a different aspect of their game, added SLSG Illinois ECNL Director Laura Heffington. As we were limited to virtual meetings and training, the ability to have our players working directly with graduate students on mental strength was a huge asset. The exercises that our players went through are not only tools that can be valuable to sport, but also assets in school and other stressful areas of their lives.

Participating SIUE graduate students emphasize the value of such professional interaction with youth athletes, as they prepare for careers as sport psychologists.

I utilized videos and goal sheets, and challenged them to discuss and be open about their experiences, despite it being a group Zoom session, recalled Savana Robinson, of Des Moines, Iowa. The girls were consistently engaged and never skipped a beat on wanting to delve into techniques to better nervousness, stress or motivation. The competitive nature of Gallagher has made the girls realize the importance of mental strength in sport, which is unique to find at such a young age.

Graduate student Harben Branco Filho, of Brazil, came to the U.S. at age 17 to play soccer and pursue his education. As a mental performance coach, he was able to gain applied experience that combined his passions for sport and psychology, with the added privilege of helping others.

We explored the topics of motivation, confidence and dealing with anxiety, Filho said. Such topics can be complex even for adults, so one of the major focuses was to tailor the information according to the athletes own reality. We must be sensible and creative to adapt the complex information we learn to everyday language that these young people are able to understand and apply to their lives.

This experience was crucial to help me draw connections from the classroom material to the real world, he added.

Every experience I get to work with athletes on improving their mental skills is a big stride in my growth as a consultant, agreed graduate student Courtney Kendrick, of Jonesboro.

Athletes have to train their mind like they train their body, she explained. Oftentimes, youth athletes are in the developing stages, and this means that they are easily influenced and still learning their way. If we, as coaches and consultants, include mental training skills into practice and the team program, we can shape and improve these skills, setting these young athletes up for success.

Other graduate students serving as mental performance coaches were Landon Braun, of Jefferson, Iowa, Alyssa Lowe, of Mt. Zion, Cameren Pryor, of Raleigh, N.C., and Maira Ogata Negri, of Brazil.

Ross-Stewart mentored the students throughout the trainings. She hopes to continue this partnership in the future online, or in-person when circumstances become safe to do so.

By preparing the next generation of leaders in a knowledge-based economy, SIUEs Graduate School fulfills the regions demand for highly trained professionals. Graduate school offerings include arts and sciences, business, education, engineering, nursing and interdisciplinary opportunities. SIUE professors provide students with a unique integration of theoretical education and hands-on research experiences. Students can obtain graduate certificates or pursue masters degrees, and be part of a supportive learning and rich intellectual environment that is tailored to the needs of adult learners. The Graduate School raises the visibility of research at SIUE, which ranks highest among its Illinois Board of Higher Education peers in total research and development expenditures, according to the National Science Foundation. Doctoral programs are available in the Schools of Education (EdD) and Nursing (DNP). The School of Engineering and the Department of Historical Studies feature cooperative doctoral programs (PhD), and the College of Arts and Sciences features an Environmental Resources and Policy cooperative PhD.
