Early Career Scientists Receive Lupus Research Grants Supporting Critical Studies and Growth of Field – Lupus Foundation of America
Today, the Lupus Foundation of America announced the recipients of the 2020 Gary S. Gilkeson Career Development Award (CDA), a two-year grant supporting the professional growth of early career scientists as they establish their studies in lupus research, helping to grow the lupus research field.
The Lupus Foundation of Americas Career Development Award plays such an important role in filling the need for more lupus-focused researchers by supporting young scientists at such a pivotal time in their careers ensuring that they have mentorship during their research, and providing funding that can be difficult to obtain at such an early career stage, shared Karen H. Costenbader, MD, MPH, Chair of the Lupus Foundation of Americas Medical-Scientific Advisory Council.
The grants support young scientists at a crucial time in their career as they forge their career path. This year, three grantees will be focusing their studies on lupus-related kidney disease (lupus nephritis), an incredibly important area of lupus research. Each grantee works with an established clinical scientist as a mentor, ensuring that grantees have the support and guidance needed during their research.
The focus of the Career Development Award on young scientists at the beginning of their careers allows experienced mentors like myself to work with very intelligent and driven investigators while guiding them in their studies. The grant also ensures the future of lupus research is bright and increases the likelihood of new breakthroughs, shared Brad H. Rovin, MD, FACP, FASN, Director of Nephrology, Professor of Medicine and Pathology, The Ohio State University, and member of the Lupus Foundation of Americas Medical-Scientific Advisory Council.

Additionally, the Lupus Foundation of America with support from the John & Marcia Goldman Foundation will be providing the second year of funding for the 2019 Career Development Award recipients, who have made significant progress in their research.

The Brilliant Personal Trainer Who is Helping Women Take Control of Their Lives through Her Exercise Regime – Yahoo Finance
NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / August 18, 2020 / It's 11 AM on a Thursday. You've just woken up, and you've hit a roadblock again, not knowing how to go on about your day or how to keep your body active during this pandemic, because the world is having trouble offering you the best regime for your overall wellness these days. If this narrative sounds familiar, personal trainer Jaime Filer is here to let you know that this habit can stop now, and for good.
Starting when she was just 17 years old, Filer had a head start in her career track to become a personal trainer; she started studying for the certification so that she could take the test the day she turned 18. However, it hadn't been all smooth sailing for her to reach that point. She began seriously working out when she was just 14 as a result of an eating disorder. Her first diet started when she was 11 years old, and it intensified to the extent of hospitalization where she was diagnosed with anorexia. She was admitted twice by the age of 15 and once more at 16 for kidney dialysis. Her weight decreased from 110 lbs to 104, and eventually 95 at the height of 5'7", indicating a very low Body Mass Index and severe malnutrition. Throughout her late teen years, Filer had started to compete in bodybuilding, thinking that her 3% body fat was enough to put her on a stage. It all came to a head when one of the judges told her that her body "belongs in the hospital, and not on stage." "It was my love for fitness that almost killed me," Filer stated, "But if it wasn't for fitness, I also wouldn't be where I am now". It took her about three years, lots of intensive outpatient therapy, and a ton of support from friends and family in order for her to recover and to finally say, "This ends now".
At a young 32 years of age, Filer is going into her 15th year of personal training. She is committed to helping other young women like her overcome emotional eating and eating disorder issues and show them the path to taking control of their lives again, "We set the expectations so high of ourselves since the explosion of social media, and the last thing I want is for another young girl to suffer the way I did," Filer stated. With that, her personal training journey narrowed down from training everyone to specifically women who are struggling with body image and eating habits. Filer graduated from college with a kinesiology and physiology degree, as well as a diploma in personal training. She started off her career working in a gym and absolutely hated it. Her love for traveling and her revulsion towards working in a confined setting propelled her to begin her own online fitness training program. Her online business started to take off right after college in 2015 where she structured her program to be as accessible as possible to her clients every single day of the week. "The usual personal trainer would work for 13 hours a day, training only maybe 8 or 9 people, but I am giving way more than 9 clients a day access to me," Filer claimed. She programs client's check-ins so that they can contact her through email, texts, or direct messages as they come in, with no bound of physical scheduling.
Story continues
Filer puts on daily entertainment, education, motivation, and inspiration for her followers through Instagram. She always strives to put out messages that will speak personally to her clients and other women who need the message. Her steps to on-boarding clients include getting on a phone call with them and learning more about them, "I would take on everyone who is ready to get on my program, but obviously there are some clients who just aren't ready yet and need to seek guidance from a qualified professional who is more knowledgeable in handling what they are struggling with at the moment," Filer suggested, "But when they're ready, I will be here with open arms". After the phone call, Filer will then provide them with a range of fitness program options that are customizable for each person. Filer's fitness programs are not only unique because they are flexible to customization, but they're also unique because it's based on her kinesiology and physiology expertise. It's quite challenging for people to look for an alternative workout routine at home that is not repetitive and will not result in injuries. Filer guarantees a variation of exercise routines that are fun, dynamic, reduce the risk of injury, and are safe to do regardless of how much (or how little) equipment you have. Her latest program includes the Inner/Outer Strength plan' dedicated towards helping the body and mind move towards a positive place.
Some of the tips that Filer would love to share for anyone who is looking for a healthy change in their daily routine during the quarantine are:
1) Create habits that are healthy, and regularly exercise.
"It's so easy to lose sight of your entire day because you don't go out anymore so setting a schedule for you to see how your week is going to go is very helpful in order to keep a track of your movement!" Filer stated.
2) Just start moving!
"If you can't go to the gym, download an app or find a walking buddy to keep track of your movements just to keep you going! There's no excuse," Filer claimed.
3) Do what you can, where you are, and with what you have.
"Take your circumstances and make use of the things that are available to you!" She suggested.
Besides being a fitness coach, Filer teamed up with Mathew Park, an exceptional entrepreneur, in order to help fellow personal trainers amplify their business. The clients of Trainer Revenue Multiplier' are other trainers who are struggling to keep their business going. With a background of being born and raised as a Canadian in a family full of advocates, Filer is definitely familiar with the challenges that aspiring business owners face and strives to help them grow. Filer is definitely an inspiration for all as she never let the obstacles and challenges she faces become bigger than her dreams and passion.
"It's like a Greyhound when the gate finally opens; it doesn't matter what's trying to stop me, I just know that this is what I was meant to do," Jaime stated.

Keep Moving Safely with Duke Recreation | Duke Today – Duke Today
At 5:15 p.m., Christine Moorman and her husband Ed Holub leave their home office areas, change into exercise clothes, unravel exercise mats in their living room and pull up a live virtual fitness class offered by Duke Recreation & Physical Education.
They pick from their favorite offerings: Pilates, kickboxing, high-intensity interval training.
Both of us sit for most of the day, so the classes are our signal that its the end of the workday and time to start moving, said Moorman, the T. Austin Finch Sr. Professor of Business Administration at the Duke Fuqua School of Business. The classes are our way to decompress together. Got Questions?
Find up-to date information about Duke Recreation & Physical Education facilities, memberships and services online.
North Carolina is in Phase 2 of its reopening plan until at least Sept. 11, which keeps gyms and fitness centers closed, but Duke Recreation & Physical Education has found alternate ways to keep staff, faculty and students healthy and moving safely.
At Duke, the Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion will be open for limited hours to some Duke Recreation & Physical Education members, and you can still rent outdoor equipment. Duke Rec has created virtual fitness offerings and is offering a new digital membership, as well as limited in-person, outdoor programs that are on-site, like outdoor group fitness classes, to keep community members active while adhering to public health measures such as masking and physical distancing.
For us, its about providing healthy opportunities that are safe and accessible, said Felicia Tittle, executive director of Duke Recreation & Physical Education andphysical activity and movementco-convener forHealthy Duke. The overall health of our community is so vital. You cant have people be their best selves without resources for their physical and emotional well-being.
Here are some membership updates:
Since Wilson and Brodie closed in March, Duke Rec has provided reoccurring group fitness classes, at-home video workouts and weekly blog posts about recreational resources. Duke Rec & P.E.'s social media accounts also highlight at-home workout tips and ideas for staying active. Individuals can stay connected to the Duke Community beyond the gym through apps such asStrava.
For all of us, it was about the community and the connection, said Leigh Ann Garstecki, director of fitness and wellness for Duke Recreation & Physical Education. People are logging onto our classes because they want to be connected to the people they know.
The relationship with fitness instructors has kept Moorman and her husband participating in virtual exercise classes almost every day since March. The couple has been a member of Duke Recreation & Physical Education for five years and will continue with a virtual membership.
Overall, they are just world-class instructors, Moorman said. They are so enthusiastic and give a lot of exercise adaptions. We look forward to seeing them and we can tell they care about helping us. Its a little corny, but theyve become part of our daily life during the pandemic.
For an extensive FAQ on re-opening and offerings, visit the Duke Recreation & Physical Education website.
Help share the proactive and extensive work being done by all Duke community members during the COVID-19 outbreak. Send ideas, shout-outs and photographsby clicking hereor writeworking@duke.edu.

Battle of the virtual conventions: How the GOP team is studying the Democrats show – POLITICO
Part of our message will focus on how the suburbs are becoming unsafe because inner cities are unsafe, and Biden and Kamala are going to make it even worse. People who have been impacted by the lawlessness will speak, said the outside Trump adviser.
Trump himself has also pushed to be featured more prominently in the Republican convention, alongside other party figures including Vice President Mike Pence, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Sens. Tom Cotton (Ark.), Tim Scott (S.C.) and Joni Ernst (Iowa), among other speakers.
Two Republicans close to the campaign said the president plans to have a presence each of the four days of the convention, either by video or through an appearance by one of his family members. Trumps wife Melania and eldest son Don Jr. are both expected to speak. Even Michael Flynn, Trumps former national security adviser, whose stature as a MAGA star grew exponentially after he was ensnared in the Russia investigation, had been considered to speak at the convention next week, according to three people familiar with the situation, though he was ultimately passed over for other names.
Democrats do not seem worried about the last-word advantage GOP officials believe they have, in part because of differences in their production resources. The format of the Republican National Convention went through numerous iterations before Trump finally announced at the end of July that he was canceling the most prominent physical portions altogether, leaving campaign aides and officials involved in planning the convention scrambling as they worked to assemble a virtual convention in one month.
Weve got all the Hollywood people on our side so we get all the best advice, boasted Daughtry.
As for Republicans making potential changes to their speaking roster and programming based on the Democrats convention, Daughtry said its nothing new: Anytime we go first, they are always in a scramble to adjust their convention.
Other Democrats involved in the partys convention said they were especially proud of how their program has so far weaved in accounts from ordinary people along with bold-faced names. That process began on June 29 when the party realized that in-person convening would be difficult, if not impossible, in the age of Covid-19.
As a result, they set up a portal inviting people to submit their own stories and videos and then selected certain entries to insert throughout the televised program each evening. The crowdsourcing attempt brought in over 1,000 submissions, according to convention spokesperson Ofirah Yheskel.
Its what the internet is all about, or at least what the internet should all be about, said Lindsay Holst, a senior adviser for special projects at the convention. The real opportunity of the internet is connecting with people beyond your own lived experiences.
Trumps team believes the combination of their own stories from ordinary voters, combined with the elegance of the White House as a backdrop, will make their own convention feel more energetic and organized than the Democrats program despite the restrictions Covid-19 has imposed on both parties.
The RNC filed a permit earlier this week to launch fireworks from the Washington Monument as soon as the president finishes his acceptance speech at the White House, another flashy move aimed at capturing viewers attention. Tim Murtaugh, communications director for the Trump campaign, said the studio from which Longoria Bastn hosted the convention on Monday night made the program feel indistinguishable from a regular CNN segment at times.
But they are also borrowing ideas from the Democrats convention playbook. After several Republicans spoke in favor of Biden during the DNC on Monday they included Kasich, the former Ohio governor, former California GOP Senate candidate Meg Whitman, former Rep. Susan Molinari (R-N.Y.) and former New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman Trump campaign officials confirmed that they, too, will focus part of their programming on bipartisan support for the president. According to two officials familiar with the planning, Georgia Democratic Rep. Vernon Jones, who announced his support for Trumps reelection earlier this year, will make an appearance next week.
Anita Kumar and Meridith McGraw contributed to this report.

I know I'm not the first, and I know I won't be the last to experience anything like this. But when it comes to losing a loved one and you're trying to mentally focus, and that's just like focusing on the job or just focus operating the vehicle, you know there's a lot of things that come with that, like depression, petticoat, tags, anxiety. And I experienced all that high blood pressure, a whole list of things and had to get medicated on those things. So my goal is to help others that has lost a loved one and let them know all the things that they can do to overcome their fear, their anxiety, panic attacks, and let them know that their organizations out there that I have Joan one does help it. So it is a way to cope with it, and entrepreneurs on the move actually birth the foundation, the Michael Hey Foundation, because Michael was actually on his way to be an entrepreneur. Following the tragic workplace death of Micheal Fernandez Haith of Irondale, his family has created a foundation in his honor. Haith died in September of last year at Precoat Metal. Hueytown police said Haith was pinned between two large steel coils which led to his death. The Michael Haith Foundation operates under a group called Entrepreneurs on the Move. "There are different programs available such as children dealing with the grief of losing a loved one. How to manage stress levels, we have tools and resources for referrals to different specialist after scheduling a consultation with one of our advisors. Mental anxiety, panic attacks, fear is all associated with the program depending on which level the individual is on. We also have a work and balance plan of exercise to help reduce stress levels. Also, we have a doctor that is in our network that we can refer to them to for psychiatric help as well as grieving counselors," Haith's sister Adrienne Haith-Crawford said. Haith's family was presented with a proclamation back in April from Governor Kay Ivey's office. The proclamation honored those who were being remembered on Worker's Memorial Day which is April 28th. Haith is a graduate of Shades Valley High School and a father of two sons. If you would like to learn more about the foundation, email Crawford at agcrawford99@yahoo.com.

Best workout subscription apps for 2020: Peloton, Daily …
Workout videos (and gym fitness overall) have certainly come a long way sinceJane Fonda's Workoutfrom the 1980s. Now, in the age of Netflix and Hulu, all you really need is YouTube or a streaming app to take a virtual exercise class anywhere you're connected to Wi-Fi.
Streaming workout subscriptions, and the apps you use to access them, do the same thing those old exercise VHSes and DVDs did -- bring the gym to you and allow you to do strength training, HIIT or cardio workouts on your schedule. But they go a step beyond by offering large libraries of fitness classes that you can stream unlimitedly.
With so many options to choose from, it can be hard to figure out which workout plans are worth your money. In this guide, I cover the best streaming workouts you can buy and what to consider before signing up.
Read more:Peloton alternatives: 4 great indoor exercise bikes that cost less
Streaming fitness subscriptions are basically Netflix for workout videos. You pay a flat monthly fee to stream unlimited workout classes on your TV, computer, tablet or phone. Usually these classes are prerecorded and available on demand, but some services -- such as Daily Burn -- also offer live classes that you can tune into.
Most fitness streaming subscriptions are standalone products, but you can also find exercise videos onAmazon Prime Video.
Though streaming fitness subscriptions are no replacement for a personal trainer, they are an easy way to fit in a workout when you can't or don't want to head to the gym.
Read more:The 7 best fitness subscription boxes in 2020 for every workout style
Just a note that I am purposely not covering any services for fitness programs that are exclusive to a specific product, such as Mirror or Fightcamp. This list includes services anyone can sign up for, without purchasing anything else to get started.
True to its name, Daily Burn offers new daily classes at 9 a.m. ET. If that time doesn't work for you, you can always watch the recorded version later in the day, plus so many more.
Daily Burn aims to help everyone get fit, regardless of fitness level. By answering a few questions about your goals -- weight loss, burning more calories, toning, improved fitness -- the service can create workout and nutrition plans for you.
Because the company has been around since 2007, there's a lot of variety of video classes with Daily Burn. You'll get everything from pilates and exercise basics to high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and kickboxing. There are even pregnancy and postpartum workouts.
Daily Burn has one of the more generous free trials -- 30 days. After that, it's $19.99 per month.
Daily Burn also has standaloneYoga membership for $9.99 a month, a Runningapp for $7.99 a month and a HIIT membership for $12.99 a month.
Yes, Peloton sells a Peloton bike and treadmill that include a subscription to their streaming workout content. But, you don'thaveto buy either machine to access those videos.
For $13 per month, you can stream unlimited bootcamp, strength, yoga, running and cycling classes, with and without equipment. There are also audio-only classes for outdoor runs.
ThePeloton apphas live-streamed classes available every day, and you can pick from the on-demand options whenever you want. Each class provides a training plan so you know what to expect before you start.
Peloton offers a 30-day free trial to get started.
Do you already like yoga, but wish it was more... intense? CorePower is for you. The company has yogastudios all over the US, but you can also take classes virtually with CorePower on Demand.
Classes range from CorePower's full-body yoga flows and sculpting to meditation and technique lessons. There are new classes released every month to give you variety.
If you, like me, prefer a more traditional yoga approach, Glo (which used to be YogaGlo) is one of the most popular subscriptions out there. It has a vast network of teachers who have produced hundreds of yoga, pilates and meditation classes. If you are just starting out with yoga, or are looking to improve your poses, there are more than 80programsto guide your practice.
There are classes from many different styles including hatha, yin, vinyasa and iyengar, and there are classes for every level of experience within those styles. Like CorePower, Glo also has high-intensity conditioning classes for building core strength, toningand getting your heart rate up.
Glo gives you a 15-day trial and it's $18 per month after that.
Aaptiv is unlike the rest of the services on this list in that it is audio-only. What makes it so great is that you can use Aaptiv to coach outdoor workouts, including running and cycling, and workouts on a treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical. Aaptiv also has classes for yoga, strength training and other indoor workouts.
All told, there are about 2,500-plus workout classes, with around 30 more added weekly. You can pick workouts based on time, difficulty level, trainer and even choose the music you want to hear. If you ever need cues on how to perform an exercise more, you can use Aaptiv's visual workout guides which show you how to perform 250 movements, such as deadlifts or dumbbell rows.
$99 per year with a free seven-day trial or $14.99 per month (without a trial)
Ballet-inspired barre classes are a wildly popular way to tone your body. There are plenty of nationwide studios teaching barre, but you can also take them online. Barre3, which has studios in 33 states plus the Philippines and Canada, has a streaming subscription with more than 500 classes.
Videos range from calming yoga-like flows to challenging balance and flexibility workouts. There's a new 30-minute class added every week. While you don't need any equipment to get started, Barre3 recommends getting a few props: a core ball, a resistance band and lightweight dumbbells.
There's a free 15-day trial, and after that it's $30 per month.
Rather than heading to a Crunch gym in person (or if you don't live anywhere near one), you can get some of its popular classes at home.
There are more than 85 streaming workout videos available, all inspired by real classes taught at Crunch and hosted by Crunch instructors. There are also often real Crunch members in the videos.
Classes include total body bootcamp, kickboxing, yoga and barre, and they are organized into playlists like "No Equipment Needed" and "Quickies," which are just 15 minutes.
It's free for current Crunch members, or $9.99 per month with a 10-day free trial for everyone else. You can also pay $90 for a year-long subscription.
Do you really want to workout with celebrity trainer? Then go straight for Tracy Anderson's TA Online Studio.
Tracy Anderson has become a favorite of Gwyneth Paltrow, Robert Downey Jr., Kim Kardashian and Madonna for her research-backed "Method" that asserts that anyone can get lean and muscular.
Since most of us can't flock to her studios in Manhattan, LA, Madrid or the Hamptons, she offers online classes you can take anywhere. There are workouts for every fitness level, from beginner to advanced, and they are a mix of dance cardio and muscular structure classes, designed to work your accessory muscles to ultimately tone your entire body.
The TA Online Studio does not come cheap. It's $90 per month, or $809 annually (Which is $270 cheaper than one year of classes paid monthly). There's also a free two-week trial to get started.
First, almost all of the fitness streaming services are cheaper going to a gym or fitness studio for your workout routine. Most cost around $10 to $30 per month -- which is often as much as you'll pay for a single class at a studio.
Second, just like the fitness DVDs and VHS tapes of yore, you can workout wherever and whenever you want. In fact, it's easier with a streaming subscription because you no longer need a DVD player and a TV. You can access videos from your phone or tablet or computer.
So when you're traveling, or if you'd rather not go to the gym, fitness streaming services make it easier to workout at home.
Read more:8 ways to measure your fitness that aren't heart rate
The biggest downside of a streaming fitness service is that you're working out on your own, without a trainer to correct your form. That's generally fine if you are already an experienced exerciser who has taken IRL classes, but if you're a beginner, it might be hard to master moves on your own.
The flip side of that is that if you feel embarrassed or nervous about going to a real class, working out on your own can be a good way to build confidence.
You also need to carve out space in your home to exercise, and it can be hard to put aside household chores or get time away from your kids when yourhome is your gym.
As always, proceed with these programs at your own risk and start slow if you're new to exercise.

When deciding what fitness streaming subscription to get, here are some of the most important factors to consider.
Some streaming fitness services can get pricey, but most are usually less than the cost of a single class at a fitness studio.
Most streaming fitness programs offer a mix of videos with and without equipment, such as dumbbells, resistance bands or a heart rate monitor. If you'd rather exercise without buying any equipment, pick a service that has enough variety of classes that don't require it.
Read more:Should you stretch before or after your workout?
Are you planning to work out in front of your TV, or using a workout app on your phone? Most services offer iOS, Android, Amazon Fire, Apple TV or Roku apps, but always check to make sure you can stream your workouts where you want.

Obviously, if you're into a cardio workout, you're not going to pick a service that only does yoga. Take a look at the classes each streaming service offers before you sign up.
Options like Peloton Digital, Daily Burn, Crunch Live and Aaptiv offer the greatest variety of classes.

It’s Sunny With a Chance Of Yoga! at The Gateway Family YMCA – NJ TODAY
UNION COUNTY, NJ While the summer is heating up, the weather forecast is Sunny with a chance of Yoga! at The Gateway Family YMCA. In an effort to provide safe and socially distanced group exercise programs, the Y is providing more than 20 weekly Outdoor Group Fitness Program in 3 locations in Elizabeth, Rahway and Union. These programs are strategically scheduled in the cooler morning or evening hours, and registration is required at http://www.tgfymca.org as space is limited.
As a nonprofit community organization, our Y has worked to meet the needs of the community for over 120 years. The restrictions presented by the global pandemic have provided us with an opportunity to bring our programs outdoors, an out-of-the-box idea that isnt new to us, stated Krystal R. Canady, CEO, The Gateway Family YMCA. While in the past, outdoor programs were typically offered as a special event, fundraiser or specialty option, today its become part of the new normal.
Outdoor group exercise programs taught by YMCA instructions include popular sessions of classes like Yoga or Zumba, as well as low-impact options like Standing Chair Fitness or SilverSneakers, and higher-impact Just Pump it. Pilates and Circuit Training are also available. Outdoor group exercise programs are available for ages 12 and up, with a guardian required to remain on premises for those under 18. Health and safety requirements can be found at http://www.tgfymca.org/what-to-expect
We have worked together with our members and community to determine a good fit of program options, times and locations utilizing our Elizabeth Branch, Rahway Branch and Wellness Center Branch in Union. As with anything planned outdoors, weather is always a concern. We have parameters in place to ensure notifications are sent through our mobile app, so that members receive them wherever they may be, added Melynda A. Mileski, EVP/COO.

In the City: Take advantage of open recreation, cultural and park amenities – Coloradoan

Even in the midst of this unprecedented time, I hope you are finding opportunities to enjoy our beautiful Colorado summer.
The last few months have brought the welcome reopening of several recreation, cultural and park facilities, and programs. Following county and state health department guidelines, the city has designed reopening plans to create safe and welcoming places with appropriate activities for each location.
A number of recreation facilities have reopened including Edora Pool and Ice Center (EPIC), Northside Aztlan Community Center, Fort Collins Senior Center, The Farm at Lee Martinez Park, The Pottery Studio, Foothills Activity Center, and Club Tico.
Visitors should expect modified hours, limited programs and capacities, increased cleaning and sanitization, and updated check-in policies when visiting. Participants can engage in fitness, education, youth enrichment and arts and crafts programming in person or virtually.
The last month has also brought the reopening of the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery and the Lincoln Center. In welcoming the community back, the museum has limited and timed admissions and is using an online ticketing process. The Lincoln Center is available to the community for scheduled gatherings, meetings and events.
The Gardens on Spring Creek opened in June and has added summer programming for the community including yoga and tai chi on the Great Lawn.

Be on the lookout for over 50 murals being created this summer by local artists through the Art in Public Places Program. Artists will be painting murals on transformer cabinets, pianos, walls and even concrete barriers in Old Town.
Another great way to enjoy the Colorado summer is by taking a stroll in a local natural area or park. I encourage you to enjoy these treasured open spaces and recreate safely at available splash pads, dog parks, skate parks, golf courses and more.
While we are very much in the moment, we continue to plan for the future. For the last 10 months, Fort Collins parks and recreation staff together with a consulting team and with considerable public engagement, have been updating the Parks and Recreation Master Plan.
There are many phases to this in-depth planning exercise, and the final document is intended to guide the future of recreation and park assets for several decades. Community input is vital to the success of the master plan, and we want to hear your voice. Visit ourcity.fcgov.com/ParksandRec for more information on the master plan and how you can participate in upcoming engagement opportunities.
We have seen tremendous community use of public amenities recently, and we hope you will continue to enjoy the parks, natural areas, recreation and cultural facilities. Please know that we remain committed to staying informed and to safely adapting to the ever-changing conditions we find ourselves in.

New programs offer hope, help to caregivers of severely injured veterans – The Providence Journal
New regulations, the announcement of a new respite care program and a proposed Federal legislation are offering hope to devoted caregivers of wounded, ill and injured veterans around the country.
The Department of Veterans Affairs announced that it will expand the scope of the VA caregiver program which provides thousands of dollars a month in financial support to the parents, partners or spouses of severely injured veterans who have opted to care for their loved ones at home instead of placing them in a long-term care facility. Currently, there are approximately 20,000 veterans who left the service after September 11, 2001 who participate in the program. The new guidelines will allow caregivers of veterans who were injured on military duty before May 7, 1975 to become eligible, beginning October 1.
Eligibility requirements include having a military discharge or medical discharge, having a serious injury that was caused or made worse by active-duty service and if the veteran needs at least six months of continuous personal care services.
The program will be expanded in October 2022 to include caregivers providing aid to veterans who were injured between May 7, 1975 and September 10, 2001.
Caregiver education and training, mental health services and travel, lodging and financial assistance when traveling with the veteran are provided. Eligible caregivers may also receive a monthly stipend, access to healthcare benefits and 30 days per year of respite care. Additional assistance in the form of legal services, financial planning and caregiver training will also be offered under the terms of the expanded program.
More information can be found at: https://www.va.gov/family-member-benefits/comprehensive-assistance-for-family-caregivers/.
Free, short-term respite care for caregivers is on the way through a new partnership announced by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Elizabeth Dole Foundation in early August. The program initially benefits families in select regions of California, Florida and Texas, but it will roll out nationwide by the end of the year.
"Caregivers charged with caring for our nations Veterans face new challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic," said VA Secretary Robert Wilkie in a VA press release. "They have become increasingly isolated and are hindered from getting reliable, outside help. This program provides caregivers compassionate and needed relief during this stressful time."
Recognizing the toll that 24-hour care takes upon caregivers, the Respite Relief for Military and Veteran Caregivers program will deliver respite relief to eligible family caregivers of wounded, ill or injured veterans and service members. Twenty four-hours of assistance will be provided by a CareLinx healthcare professional. Services offered include companionship, light housekeeping, grocery shopping and meal preparation, transportation, mobility support/transferring, exercise, toileting, bathing, dressing and grooming aid.
According to the web site, hiddenheroes.org, the program will furnish more than 40,000 hours of non-medical home care to more than 1,6000 veterans while granting short-term, no-cost respite to their respective caregivers.
The Peer Support for Veterans Families Act (H.R. 7964) has been introduced in the United States House of Representatives by Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer of Iowa. R.I. Representative David Cicilline, has signed on as a co-sponsor of the bipartisan proposal. If the legislation passes, pilot programs in 10 medical facilities will be established to deliver caregiver education and training in crisis de-escalation, stress and mental illness. It will also provide peer-to-peer support.
The author of the proposal, Finkenauer said, "Caring for someone with a mental health diagnosis can take a toll, putting family members and loved ones at risk for anxiety, depression and other health problems. "
"This important legislation makes sense," Cicilline said. "We honor our troops when they go abroad, and we need to honor their loved ones too, who are also making an extreme sacrifice. This legislation helps remove the stigma of mental health issues and provides support for all those in need who serve our country in uniform, or by their sides as family or caregivers."
A 2009 study published in the Journals of Gerontology, cites psychological distress and depression, physiological illness and suppressed immune response, lower rates of preventative healthcare, disruptions to paid employment and personal, financial, family and social problems as the cost of caregiving.
R.I. Congressman Jim Langevin, a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, indicated that he intends to sign on as a co-sponsor of the bill saying, "I make it a priority to support our troops and veterans and their families. The Peer Support for Veterans Families Act is needed legislation that will make critical resources and training available to caregivers to provide quality care to veterans experiencing mental health challenges," concluding, "We cannot overlook these vital needs of our veterans."
The proposed legislation is endorsed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the Nurses Organization of Veterans Affairs (NOVA), the American Mental Health Counselors Association, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the American Association of Suicidology, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and The American Legion.
