Dance Theatre of Harlem announces online platform, programs – Amsterdam News

Dance online, which has flourished during the pandemic, just got even more exciting. Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) Artistic Director Virginia Johnson has announced the creation of a digital platform that brings the power, artistry and beauty of this historic Black ballet company directly into the homes of beloved audiences, fans, and anyone with an internet connection.

DTH On Demand, as the platform is called, is an embarrassment of riches that includes conversations with artists, instructional videos for children and adults, online classes for all levels that are taught by DTH alumni, faculty and company members, and, of course, full-length performances from their extensive archive.

It all begins now. The programming kicks off with the celebration of Creole Giselle, the iconic DTH classic that premiered in 1984, which was reconceived by Arthur Mitchell and staged by Frederic Franklin, based on the original 19th century masterpiece by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot.

According to Johnson, DTH dancers came up with the series of programs presented this week that aim to enhance the Creole Giselle experience for people of all ages. On Wednesday, June 3 at 8 p.m., Inside Giselle features a recent conversation with original cast members Lorraine Graves, Augustus van Heerden, and Theara Ward on filming Creole Giselle in Aarhus, Denmark, in August 1987. Its available on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. Thursday, June 4 at 8 p.m., DTH artist Lindsey Donnell hosts her creation, Giselle Jeopardy Live, an interactive live Jeopardy game that lets you test your knowledge of Creole Giselle. The game is powered by Factile. And, theres more. Get your exercise clothes on because on Friday, June 5, at 3 p.m., with Whats the Step? youll actually learn the first act variation of Giselle on Instagram in a live session with DTHs Stephanie Rae Williams.

Williams class is followed at 8 p.m. by Becoming Giselle, a program that allows viewers to enjoy interviews with beloved Giselles from different eras. Interviewees offer insights on dancing the principal role, character building and other special unique memories. Hear from the original DTH Creole Giselle, Artistic Director Virginia Johnson, former ballerina Kellye Saunders and current DTH ballerinas. The conversations can be accessed on Instagram and Facebook.

Then, as a fitting climax to this week-long series of online activity, the DTH Online platform presents the companys iconic, historic performance of Creole Giselle on June 6 at 8 p.m. Watch the full-length streaming premiere of Creole Giselle on YouTube or Facebook hosted by Johnson. The streaming premiere will be available until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, June 7.

This is only the beginning of what promises to be an exciting series of offerings on DTH Online. Other programs, with dates soon to be announced, include a tribute to DTH Resident Choreographer Robert Garlands Return, and Geoffrey Holders magnificent Dougla, among others.

Its important to remember that this bonanza of artistic activity is part of the celebration of DTHs momentous 50th anniversary, a celebration that would have been live and in person but cannot be because of the global health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. But, in spite of it all, DTH has found a way to embody a belief in the transcendent and transformative power of art. Such was also the case 50 years ago when Arthur Mitchell asked co-founder Karel Shook to help as he sought to use his talent as a force for change following the riots that erupted through the nation following the assassination of Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

City of Jackson reopening park facilities & restarting recreation programs – WKHM

The City of Jackson is announcing plans to reopen park facilities and restart recreation programs! This decision comes after a new Executive Order from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer that ends the Stay Home, Stay Safe Order and moves Michigan into Stage 4 of the MI Safe Start reopening plan. Park facilities have been closed and recreation programs canceled since mid-March due to COVID-19 concerns. Open spaces of parks and trails have stayed open.

This reopening plan will be phased in over the next two months:

Parks and Recreation Director Kelli Hoover says her department is closely following the latest directives from the State of Michigan on what programs to restart. Were looking forward to reopening parks and phasing in recreation programs. Of course, we still encourage our residents to practice safe social distancing and to be aware of COVID-19 concerns. Allowing some outdoor activities will allow residents to participate safely and maintain distances, Hoover said.

Mayor Derek Dobies welcomes this announcement. Our public parks and recreation offerings greatly enhance our quality of life in Jackson. Reopening them now gives residents the opportunity to get fresh air and exercise, along with a renewed sense of community, Mayor Dobies said.

The Nixon Park Pool and Skate Park will remain closed for the Summer 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns and budget restrictions. The City also recently announced that staff would begin working in Jackson City Hall. However, City Hall remains closed to the public through July.

PLT to Offer Third-Party Certified Sports Grade of Zynamite PX in US Market – PRNewswire

MORRISTOWN, N.J., June 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --PLT Health Solutions announced today that the company will begin offering a Certified for Sports Grade of the ingredient Zynamite PXto the U.S. market. PLT manufacturing partner Nektium Pharma (Las Palmas, Spain) has established an on-going program with the Banned Substances Control Group (BSCG) to test and certify materials sold as Sports Grade. The testing program covers 483 drugs in total, including 272 drugs that are banned by a broad range of sports organizations.Launched in February of this year, Zynamite PX is a patent-pending synergistic combination of a Mangifera indica extract and Sophora japonica extract (standardized to 50% quercetin) that offers a unique set of benefits in active/sports nutrition products. The subject of multiple clinical trials, Zynamite PX has been shown to improve peak power output in one hour after a single dose. It was also shown to reduce lactate build-up and speed recovery from long, intense workouts places where athletes need help the most.

According to Steve Fink, Vice President of Marketing at PLT Health Solutions, third-party sports certification of Zynamite PX is indicative of PLT's and Nektium's commitment to the needs of sports consumers. "At PLT, we are committed to bringing innovation to the active/sports nutrition market and look to meet the special needs of this segment. This certification is one way we hope we can help sports nutrition companies create products their customers will trust," he said."Fast-acting and experiential, Zynamite PX is an ideal ingredient for pre-workout formulations and can also be effective in post-workout recovery-type products. Studies on Zynamite PX also support its use in extreme and endurance sports performance formulations," he said.

Nearly Four Decades of Sports TestingBCSG was founded in 2004 to address the needs of the supplements industry. The group practices method detection levels in the parts per billion (ppb or ng/g) that are essential for athletes to avoid the chance of positive drug tests. More information on the organization can be found at http://www.bscg.org.

Clinical Studies Back Performance ImprovementIn 2018, a double-blind cross-over clinical study was conducted to determine whether a single 420 mg dose of Zynamite PX administered one hourbefore exercise would improve repeated-sprint performance. Subjects performed three Wingate tests interspaced by 4 minutes and a final 15 second sprint after ischemia. Peak power was improved by 3.8% in one hour versus placebo in subjects using one dose of Zynamite PX. One interesting result was that the quercetin dose was about 25-50% lower than that associated with quercetin ergogenic effects in previous studies, suggesting that this combination has synergistic effects.

In a separate study that looked at recovery, 48 subjects ran a 5K race to randomly assign them to two treatment groups, matched by sex and 5K performance. Two weeks later, they participated in a 10K race followed by 100 drop jumps (59 cm height) to elicit exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD). Results of the study suggest that a single 420 mg dose of Zynamite PX, taken one hour before competition, followed by three additional doses every eight hours, attenuated the pain elicited by competitive exercise and accelerated the recovery of muscle performance.

Ingredient integrity from harvest to shelfAccording to Rima Patel, Director of Quality for PLT, the independent verification conducted by BSCG on Zynamite PX is in line with the company's PLT360 transparency and trust building initiative that was introduced in 2015. "PLT360is a business-wide commitment by PLT Health Solutions to developing ingredients that our customers can be bothconfidentandproudto supply to their own customers knowing that these ingredients are safe, of high quality, efficacious and harvested and manufactured in a sustainable way," she said. "Going beyond traditional quality control programs, PLT360 examines every aspect of an ingredient that we supply to deliver a best-in-class solution in a program that tracksIngredient Integrity, Quality, Sustainability and Efficacy," she added.

The truth about weight training – Grainews

At your age, should you really be lifting weights?Isnt weight training dangerous for your joints? Does that really help you feel better?Arent you worried about getting injured again?I heard that weight training is bad for you doesnt it cause arthritis?

These are some things my clients have heard when their peers/families/friends find out they are participating in an exercise-based program with me.

Answers to some of those myths and others are:

1. Weight training does not cause arthritis.2. Weight training will not make women bulky.3. Weight training is highly effective for arthritis rehabilitation and management, when it is done correctly. Poorly designed exercise programs and poor form will exacerbate the symptoms of arthritis, instead of helping. The guidance of an educated exercise-based professional eliminates this risk.4. Weights are just as beneficial if not more beneficial when the goal is weight loss and metabolic improvements in populations at risk for obesity and diabetes.

Would I tell someone of any age to just go and start lifting weights (no matter how much)? Absolutely not. Do I prescribe and coach programs for all ages (yes, all the way up to 90-somethings) that involve various amounts of loaded movements, functional movements, dynamic movements, and stability training? You bet I do!

The body works on an adaptation-based system. This means in order to improve our systems we have to stress our systems.

Heres the feedback I get from my dedicated clients:

I dont wake up at 3 a.m. anymore with back pain.

I sleep through the night and dont wake up stiff in the mornings anymore.

I dont get tired during the day.

My joints arent bugging me as much since I started training.

Im making healthier choices elsewhere in my life since starting this training routine.

I FEEL GOOD.

When we apply healthy stress to our system, things change for the better. We also develop a higher tolerance for negative stressors, which means we function at a higher efficiency longer term. Its widely acknowledged now that the mind and the body are one co-ordinating unit. Exercise movement of any kind is the most effective medicine, and statistics support this.

According to the Conference Board of Canada, if we were to decrease the number of inactive Canadians by even 10 per cent, wed see a 30 per cent reduction in all-cause mortality and major savings in health care. It is estimated that more than $2.4 billion, or 3.7 per cent of all health-care costs, were attributed to the direct cost of treating illness and disease due to physical inactivity. The financial impact of poor health amounts to a loss of more than $4.3 billion to the Canadian economy, and the negative repercussions of inactivity cost the health-care system $89 billion per year in Canada.

According to several studies, properly structured and supported exercise programs, designed and delivered by a professional can, among other benefits:

Weight training when done intelligently for each individual is just as effective as other types of exercise in improving health. It has its own set of extra benefits and of course risk factors. Just like that Tylenol you like to pop for your back pain.

There is no one way to utilize the benefits of movement. Some people like to do yoga, some like to do step classes, and others just like to go for regular walks and stretch.

Adding appropriate weight training into your routine comes with vast benefits to your health. The key factors are ensuring that you have a program and guidance that is suited to you, as an individual, and you are applying it as a positive stressor to a body. Exercise, like many other things, is a prescription. It must come with appropriate and guided use!

All the ways assisted living and senior housing could serve residents better – MarketWatch

Ron, my significant other of 25 years, is a retired psychologist withParkinsons disease. He lives in a small apartment in theassisted livingsection of the best continuing care community in the city, having moved there from independent living in October. He had begun to require more physical services but remained engaged in life and mentally alert.

When thecoronavirusbegan to invade south Louisiana, however, Rons assisted-living facility responded with a reaction that I would call extreme and absolute, no doubt derived from a fear of contagion and a concern for their own liability. They effectively closed down the campus. But they hadnt prepared for what that would mean to Ron and others like him.

All visitors except caregivers were barred; neither Rons daughter and grandchildren nor I could visit. We couldnt take him off campus, even just for lunch, or hed then be confined to his unit for two weeks. All residents were required to remain on the premises except for medical appointments, when the facilitys van driver would take them.

Three meals daily were delivered to Rons unit, so hes been eating alone all the time since the third week of March.Thereve been no more opportunities for camaraderie over fried chicken in the dining room or sitting down with two sweet-looking, powder-haired ladies and finding that they, too, would love to get into a regular poker game.

All scheduled activities were canceled. No more visiting performers from the LSU School of Music came to entertain; no more speakers held forth in the community room on subjects ranging from the challenges of the Middle East to climate change.Book-club gatherings were forbidden. So were religious services.

In this new regimen, mental stimulation became strictly do-it-yourself, which is infinitely more difficult when Parkinsons already saps your energy. And nigh on to impossible whenyourlife has been primarily analog.

Also read: Millions more seniors are likely to fall into poverty

Rons parameters were defined by where he could perambulate along the driveways and sidewalks on his rollator. But, of course, he needed to wear a mask and maintain a social distance if he encountered another resident, which made chatting challenging, with the requisite six feet of separation and the hearing loss many residents suffer.Pleasant interludes in the garden were reduced to a mush of Huhs? and What did you says?

And, as Ive noticed during our daily FaceTime visits, after Rons seven weeks in lockdown, in physical isolation with a lack of social and intellectual stimulation, he has suffered a noticeable mental decline. Sometimes, he seems like the old Ron, but at other times, he is unable to process things and its not just from the Parkinsons.

A few days ago, for example, while were FaceTiming, I told Ron I had a 1 p.m.Zoom ZM, +1.92% date with my grandsons. He looked quizzical and asked how I could talk to them when they were in school.

Theyre not in school, I told him.Think about it, I said, adding, Why are they not in school? He couldnt remember. After I reminded him of the ubiquity of the coronavirus shutdowns, he hit his head with his hand and groaned, embarrassed.I cant believe I could have forgotten that, he whispered, suddenly terrified of his own deterioration.

I suspect that the weekslong lack of social and intellectual stimulation not only affected Ron, but also others who live by themselves in assisted living. The lack of external connections led me to the conclusion that Ron should have had access to something similar to what my elementary school-aged grandchildren receive:In the absence of their normal school days, they have differing levels of digital learning, so their isolation is broken, at least virtually.

Dont miss: How to be the best virtual grandparent you can be

Before the next, inevitable pandemic, I believe that older adults and their loved ones wholl be shopping for a long-term care facility should expand their checklist of amenities to include the ability to connect to the outside world through the wonders of the digital one.

As Next Avenues recentarticle about senior housingattested, this is already in place at some senior communities. But I fear that many, like Rons, dont offer these services.

This, they should realize, is at their own peril because only protecting residents from physical harm can risk exacerbating their mental decline.

Care communities need dedicated tech assistants on staff available to instruct residents, even for something as basic as how to use FaceTime.

Ron had never accessed FaceTime on his smartphone. After I insisted we try, it took several frustrating rounds of instruction because I wasnt there to help him.But now he delights in seeing my face, as well as the young and enthusiastic grins of his teenage grandchildren and his daughter.

See: The nursing home COVID-19 tragedy how did this happen?

I had scheduled a Zoom happy hour with friends in Idaho and wanted Ron to participate, since hes devoted to them. But he didnt have the Zoom app. Also, hed forgotten his password to the app store, didnt know how to retrieve it and no one at his facility helped him do it.

I sent him a link, but that only confused him. In the end, he participated by audio through my cellphone held up to my desktop and repeatedly told our friends how wonderful it was to hear their voices.

A ready tech assistant could have helped Ron connect to Zoom or Microsoft Teams MSFT, +1.13% or another meeting format, through which he and his fellow poker players could hold virtual cutthroat games. That would have led the book club to meet and discuss the merits of their latest read, too.

When I recently told Ron that I was Zooming in to a religious service, one hed enjoyed with me on many occasions, he said, wistfully: I would love to do that.

Although Ive dropped off magazines and homemade scones at the facilitys gate during the tightly regulated two drop-offs per week, that hasnt extended his world or challenged his brain during this period of isolation.

With assistance from a tech staffer, he could seek out books hed learned of on public radio; connect to history, arts and culture websites bringing performances, lectures, and more. If hed been helped to add the necessary hardware for streaming capability, he could have been enjoying a spectrum of films, documentaries or travel videos about places hell now never visit, due to Parkinsons.

In years past, this intrepid traveler went with me to Vietnam, Turkey, Chile, the Republic of Georgia and more. I know the ability to virtually venture to places hes dreamed about could remove him however briefly from his confinement.

Senior residences should also have an intra-facility/inhouse television channel, to broadcast to TV sets in every unit. After all, TVs are the one piece of furniture everyone owns. A dedicated channel could show the same old-timey movies that would have entertained residents in the community room; exercise programs; and videos of interesting speakers or musicians.

A weekly guide could arrive with breakfast on Monday mornings, detailing the schedule of the weeks programs, a substitute for the chirpy calendar of monthly activities that they had posted everywhere in the facility during normal times.

I suspect that care communities like Rons might argue against my proposal because adding dedicated tech staffers for residents would be too expensive. The service would be difficult to enact, theyd say. And, they might counter, if residents wanted to be digitally connected, their families should have assured that they were when they moved in.

Senior residences cheerfully advertise themselves as the perfect place for the over-65 demographic. But the perfect place must include care for thewholeperson both body and mind.

These capabilities are already offered by the senior communities Next Avenue wrote about. Im sorry Ron is not living at one of them.

Putting Your Fitness Business On The Digital Road Map – Forbes

Due to the global novel coronavirus pandemic, the face of business has changed. As an entrepreneur, this can be frightening. Fitness entrepreneurs face a unique challenge in that the cornerstone of their business model is usually face-to-face contact with their customers.

It is a necessity, however, that we all learn how to operate online as much as possible while were navigating this unprecedented event. For those in the fitness industry, there are three main pillars to migrating your business to a digital format successfully.

1. Everything is now digital.

The good news first: People still need coaching services. The bad news: Touch points you used to rely on aren't available right now. Before, when someone walked into your gym, you could have a quick conversation with them to gauge their needs and figure out how best to serve them. That cant be replicated right now.

The way you can develop that same sort of rapport is with a closed Facebook group. Coaches can go there to engage with customers and encourage the same type of conversational community that existed at your gym. It will help your clients stay plugged in to what youre doing and feel connected to their coaches.

Another key service normally provided inside a gym is movement technique and correction. Coaches watch clients and show them ways to become more efficient with their movements and prevent injury. That cant be done when youre delivering a workout routine through text or email.

The best way to digitize that service is through video. This can be done by posting your workouts to YouTube or other social media channels or even sending them directly over text message. Reach out to clients to get a feel for the channel(s) they use most, and meet them there.

Lastly, consider the practical stuff surrounding how you transact and take peoples money. Before, you could take cash, checks or cards. Now, virtually 100% of your transactions need to be digital.

Youve gone from being a brick-and-mortar to being an e-commerce business. Youre still selling and trying to win business, but you have to digitize things like your waivers, contracts, insurance documents, etc. From top to bottom, youre now a digital business.

2. Beef up your video skills.

Youre not going to get away with just selling written workout programs right now. Workouts are available for free all over the place, and no real value comes from simply writing them down. The value is in the experience you give the client.

Currently, thats going to have to be done over video. Peloton is a brand that does this well; it has a great visual experience. Thats obviously a level not everyone will be able to reach (nor do you need to), but it gives you an idea of where the bar is set.

You need to serve your community, which can now include nonlocals. If you execute this well, it could be a piece of your business in the long run. But youre going to have to get really good at doing video to deliver an experience people are willing to pay for.

The most important aspect of this is where you do your recording. Find a clean spot with proper lighting. It should be quiet, with minimal wind and background noise. An iPhone can work well for recording video.

Audio quality, however, can really make or break a workout experience. Bluetooth headphones allow the speaker to stand away from the phone and still be heard. You may also want to invest in a directional microphone with a wind muff. Make sure you test all your equipment first, as the kiss of death will be if people struggle to hear you. Youll be given some tolerance for technical issues at the start, but people wont continue to tune in if your quality doesnt pass muster.

Lastly, make sure whoever is recording your videos brings some personality to the table. They should be comfortable on camera and excited to be there. Good energy translates through video. This is a different skill set than what you might look for in an in-house coach, but we may be doing things digitally for a while. Consider what staff you want to have in place.

3. Focus on communication.

A lot of people are old school: They want to come into the gym to sit down and chat. But that isnt possible right now. We need to understand other ways our clients might want to communicate.Just because you prefer text, Facebook or email doesnt mean thats everyones preference. Youre unlikely to get everyone in your community on one single platform together, so youre going to have to get good at different types of digital communication.

If you dont already have a presence on Facebook, I suggest you develop one because thats where a majority of people congregate, in my experience. Both business pages and private groups can be useful in reaching audiences there.

You should also have a direct email list. As much as we dont necessarily engage with email these days due to the sheer volume we receive, this remains an effective channel for getting your message across.

Lastly, look at text message support. Lots of marketing platforms support automated text messaging. A mobile-centric marketing strategy might be overkill for a small gym, so consider having your coaches text and follow up with members on a daily or weekly basis.

Figure out what type of communication your members want to have. Youre going to have to send every message out across multiple channels in order to reach everyone. Developing a good process for how you manage that as well as the queue of responses you receive back is critical.

These three areas of focus are essential to putting your fitness business on the digital road map. Even in these uncertain times, people still need exercise. Fitness is not canceled. Transitioning your business to a digital model will serve you well not only during this crisis, but in the long run.

Make sure the veteran in your life is getting the benefits they deserve – Starts at 60

InMoneyonWednesday3rdJun, 2020

Australia has 641,000 veterans but not all of them know theres an array of entitlements they are due, many of which are vital for good health and wellbeing.

If youre like most Australians, you have a deep respect for the work our defence forces do to protect our beloved country. And if one of your family members or friends is a member of the forces or a veteran, that respect is no doubt combined with a lot of love. We all want the best for our brave servicemen and women and veterans.

Thats why you might be surprised and concerned to learn that many of Australias 641,000 veterans arent aware of the wide range of specialised support services and benefits they earned through their service and so are missing out on assistance that could be vital to their health and wellbeing.

In fact, a 2018 report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare pointed out that although veterans tended to have greater health and welfare needs than non-veterans, there was a real lack of official government data on how veterans accessed the services they needed or even which services were the most helpful.

If you have a veteran in your family or group of mates, you may have noticed yourself that theyre struggling with physical or mental health issues and dont feel particularly supported. But theres now a way you can offer real help, by referring them to Veterans Benefits Australia. Better still, all of these incredible health services are also available online, so you or a loved one can get support from a healthcare professional in the comfort of your own home.

Veterans Benefits is an online platform designed to help former Australian Defence Force (ADF) members discover what services and benefits theyre entitled to, help veterans obtain the necessary government funding to cover the costs associated and to connect them with organisations that provide services and benefits to veterans.

Tom Bailey founded Veterans Benefits in 2016 after he noticed that many ADF veterans struggled to access the free or subsidised treatments available to help them deal with health and wellbeing issues theyd incurred during their time in service.

Youd think that thered be more information out there but even navigating the Department of Veterans Affairs website is pretty complicated, Bailey says. I saw that veterans didnt know what they were entitled to and nowhere for service providers to talk in a safe way to veterans about what they could offer them.

Veterans Benefits is a one-stop-shop for veterans benefits, where users can find a range of entitlements and concessions, including government-subsidised or fully funded exercise and dietary plans, counselling and mental health programs, dental treatment, physiotherapy, medication management services and drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs. Veterans can even apply for funding to have their home cleaned regularly if they struggle to do so themselves.

Bailey says that its often these important health and wellbeing support services that are the most difficult for veterans to access, because qualifying to receive the benefit requires applying for DVA funding.

Suggested replacement quote that removes mental health element:

Sometimes, even if they find out what their entitlements are, going through the layers of bureaucracy needed to pursue a claim for funding is just too hard without someone guiding you through it, he says.

AROUND HASTINGS | Class of 2020 honored in virtual programs – St. Augustine Record

Warmest congratulations to the graduating classes of 2020!

Warmest congratulations to the graduating classes of 2020!

And while the traditional Pomp and Circumstance march was replaced this year by virtual programs, the graduation programs of all the St. Johns County High Schools were recorded and can be viewed at StJohns.K12.fl.us/graduations.

The Pedro Menendez High School video contains fun clips of student photos taken through the year. Dr. Carmichael thanked the students for all they did for others from preparing Thanksgiving meals for those in need, to volunteering with church groups and at pet centers during the year. For staying positive and caring through all the challenges, Dr. Carmichael saluted them and assured them he was profoundly proud of them all. These students entered High School shortly before Hurricane Matthew devastated the county; they completed their High School senior year on the day Floridas COVID-19 fatalities were the highest recorded. These 2020 graduating students have experienced things that will make them all stronger, more resilient, and good leaders for our community and nation. Best wishes to all.

During the past two weeks some decisions have been reached that will impact the Hastings area families. The 2020 Hastings Friends of the Library and Team Up FOCUS event has been canceled due to the inability to hold the event and comply with CDC and State of Florida safe social distancing requirements. The FOL will donate all current Back to School supplies to the principals of the schools that serve this area. They in turn will distribute the supplies to students in need. The community FOCUS back to school physicals, paperwork, and vaccinations will not be provided this year, either. Look for an even bigger event in 2021.

The Putnam Trail System and St. Johns River to Sea Loop members send their best regards to all the citizenry in the Hastings Area. They urge all who can to get out on the trails and get fresh air, sunshine, exercise and stay safe. All of their events are currently canceled as well, but many are riding the trail from Palatka to Vermont Heights during the week and on weekends.

At this time, the School Board is planning for students to return to school on Aug. 10. To stay current on the COVID-19 impact on the schools, go to the school board website where there is plenty of information regarding the school calendar and plans. StJohns.K12.FL.us will get you there.

Beginning May 28, mobile meals will be available at the following Parks & Recreation locations: W.E. Harris Community Center 11 a.m. to noon; and Solomon Calhoun Community Center from noon to 12:30 p.m. To locate additional food distribution locations, go to https://stjohns.K12.fl.us.

Mr. Halver (Hal) Stedman passed away on May 1. He was the principal of Hastings High School and later, R.B. Hunt elementary. He opened Nease High School. After retirement, he worked with Flagler College for 15 years in the Education Department. It was his wish that any donations on his behalf be made to Shriners Childrens Hospital.

Dont forget the Hastings Library is open under limited conditions. Free job-seeker services are available in the library meeting room through Career Source of Northeast Florida. Their services include helping residents apply for reemployment assistance benefits online. Theyll be at the Hastings Branch Library on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Health and Human Services are onsite at the library on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and no appointment is necessary.

You can call and order your books and materials or order them online and pick them up at the library curbside, on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is also limited computer time available. For information, call the library at 904-827-6970.

St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Elkton is holding outdoor church services at 5 p.m. on Saturdays, and at 9 a.m. on Sundays. Bring a lawn chair, a hand-fan, a hat, sunglasses, and your mask. Social Distancing will be in effect though families can certainly sit together. Please leave pets at home, though. If it rains heavily, Mass will be canceled.

The Sunshine Bus Company is still working to reopen all routes throughout the county. To request paratransit services or to obtain additional information regarding the Sunshine Bus Company, call 904-209-3716 or 904-209-3710.

Contact Nancy Quatrano at nancy@nlquatrano.com by 5 p.m. on Fridays if you have information for the column. Put Hastings in the subject line.

Lifting restrictions on walking and exercising on the boardwalk in Puerto Plata, DR – Dominican Today

Malecon of Puerto Plata

PUERTO PLATA.- After alleged pressure from the population, the government authorities in Puerto Plata voided the prohibition that prevented citizens from walking and exercising on the Malecon Avenue.

This measure described as arbitrary was implemented by the government authorities, to keep the social distance in the presence of the COVID-19 virus, a pandemic that keeps the world population in check.

For almost two months, agents from the National Police and the Specialized Tourist Security Corps (Cestur), who by superior orders did not allow people to walk on the Malecon in this Atlantic city, were posted on this road.

In the presence of the uniformed men carrying their respective regulation weapons, some citizens defined this action as a frank violation of freedom of transit and a show of authoritarianism by government authorities.

According to unofficial versions, the opposition from citizens was so intense through calls to radio and television programs and comments on social networks that the authorities had no other alternative than to nullify the prohibition to exercise and walk on the north side of the boardwalk, activities that many Puerto Platans do on a regular basis.

Working out at home? Heres how to avoid an injury – Global News

Many Canadians have turned their homes into offices, classrooms and gyms during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With more fitness studios leading virtual classes, working out at home has arguably never been easier. But it doesnt mean its without risk.

There are a few injuries that are common when it comes to at-home workouts, said Chris Edwards, owner and managing director of TriCore Wellness. These include shoulder/neck injuries, and lower back and hip injuries.

They are often caused by improperly warming up, rushing through routines, not paying attention to proper form and not resting enough between exercise sets, he said.

These variables can affect the workout effectiveness and increase your risk of injury, Edwards said.

To work out in the safest way, get your body ready for movement.

Its not wise to jump right into physical activity without preparing the body first, Nekessa Remy, a chiropractor and owner of Mississauga, Ont.-based clinic The Chiropractic Office said in an interview with The Morning Show.

Before you work out, think about wanting to get your heart rate up [and] your muscles ready to work out, she explained.

Start with some dynamic stretching, which will warm the body up. Unlike static stretching, dynamic stretches are active and can include walking lunges, arm circles and high kicks.

Teddy Savage, a Baltimore, Md., certified trainer at Planet Fitness, said your dynamic stretches should mimic the kinds of movements/exercises youll be doing in the workout.

One movement Remy recommends is a lunge with a twist, which warms up the lower body, core and upper body, she said.

Good form, a safe set-up and proper equipment are key to a quality workout, experts say.

I understand we are indoors and may think working out barefoot is OK, but its not, Remy said. You want to make sure that youve got a good running shoe with arch support.

Repetitive impact has an effect on joints and feet, so you want proper shoes to reduce any chance of injury. Plantar fasciitis, a condition that involves inflammation in the foot, can be caused by activities that put a lot of stress on the heel.

If youre doing high-impact exercises, Remy says to look for running shoes with good cushioning in the heel.

Mats are also vital. Its not advisable to workout on hardwood or carpet, Remy said, and suggests exercising on a thick exercise mat. Research has found that carpets and unsecured rugs can lead to dangerous slipping accidents especially in older adults.

You also want to ensure theres space around your mat and above your head, as its easy to trip on surrounding items or hit your head on ceilings or lighting fixtures.

Taking a virtual class can help ensure movements are done properly, as working out without guidance can lead to bad form and injury.Edwards has been working virtually with clients through fitness app Trainerize during the pandemic.

Warm-ups, rest periods and communication with the instructor are also apart of our online programs, he said.

Savage agrees that proper form is key to preventing injury. He said focusing on doing movements properly and adequate recovery time is vital.

You should focus more on your flexibility, range of motion, posture and body mechanics rather than how much weight you can press or how many reps you can accomplish, he said.

Improper form will most certainly lead to injury over time, whereas proper form will generate effectiveness and results.

At the end of your routine, you want to perform static stretches, Savage said, which can help safeguard against injury.

These stretches are more stationary in nature and are meant to loosen the muscles that were just flexed/tightened and bring the heart rate down.

Remy said you want to focus on flexibility with your cool-down and hold static stretches for a decent amount of time.

One of my favourites is an imitation of the cat/camel [pose], which you do in yoga, Remy said.

To do this move, stand up tall and interlace your fingers and press hands forward in front of you, allowing your back to round.

This move is good for stretching out your upper back, she said, which is especially helpful for people who spend much of their time at a computer.

Its also important to stretch out the front of your hips, which can get tight from sitting. To do this, Remy said to get into a lunge position. Then, hinge the hip (on the side of your back leg) forward. Do both sides.

This is a really important muscle to stretch because its often the cause of low back pain, she said.

At the end of the day, listening to your body is key. Dont push yourself if youre in pain, and make sure you get enough rest, sleep and hydration, Edwards said.

Recovery of your muscles, nervous system, and other human system happen when you sleep, he explained.

Many times your body cannot keep up with lifes daily stresses; couple this with poor sleep and recovery, and you have an injury waiting to happen.

Questions about COVID-19? Here are some things you need to know:

Symptoms can include fever, cough and difficulty breathing very similar to a cold or flu. Some people can develop a more severe illness. People most at risk of this include older adults and people with severe chronic medical conditions like heart, lung or kidney disease. If you develop symptoms, contact public health authorities.

To prevent the virus from spreading, experts recommend frequent handwashing and coughing into your sleeve. They also recommend minimizing contact with others, staying home as much as possible and maintaining a distance of two metres from other people if you go out. In situations where you cant keep a safe distance from others, public health officials recommend the use of a non-medical face mask or covering to prevent spreading the respiratory droplets that can carry the virus.
