Over 44 million people have contracted the novel coronavirus as of Oct. 28, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center. About 1.2 million have died.
As this pandemic rages across the globe and irrevocably changes more and more lives, its impact becomes increasingly difficult to visualize:1.2 million deathsthats about half the population of Houston, Texas. Thats 11 million people left in mourning, according to Kaiser Health Newsgreater than the populations of New York City and Chicago combined. Still, even making these abstract comparisons minimizes the importance of each life lost, each person left disabled by long-term COVID-19 complications,and each person who lost work or income during the pandemic.
Stacker compiled 50 charts that attempt to capture the scope of lives impacted by COVID-19. Most people have a love hate relationship with push-ups, but they shouldnt. Push ups dont require any equipment, can be modified for different abilities and are fantastic for the golf swing.
This upper body exercise can increase power while maintaining a stable core. It also strengthens your upper body which can result in higher club head speed and an increase in distance.

Forge’s fitness carries them to Concacaf League win: ‘We love being out here’ – Canadian Premier League
Another crucial game for Forge FC, another bout of late heroics.
When the dust fully settles on their 2-1 road win over Panamas Tauro FCin the Concacaf League round of 16, itll be easier to fully appreciate how massive the result really was for the CPL Champs. For now, though, the drama of the game itself takes centre stage.
Daniel Krutzens 92nd-minute penalty was the latest in a slew of magical moments that have defined this club in its very brief history, as they continue to leap hurdle after hurdle.
In the immediate aftermath of the full-time whistle, coach Bobby Smyrniotis wasnt yet able to fully describe the gravity of the situation, but the emotion in the Forge locker-room came through loud and clear.
We love this sport, he quipped. We love being out here representing our club, and doing it in Concacaf. The respect weve gained in this region is tremendous over this last two years, the competitive nature of these games has been fantastic.
The bout with Tauro certainly was competitive, as was the previous encounter with El Salvadors Club Deportivo Municipal Limeo. Tuesdays affair in Panama City saw much of the game played in transition, with players constantly having to shift from attack to defence as both sides constantly fought to win balls.

Despite heat, humidity, and a rough pitch that had been torn apart in recent days by thunderstorms (although it looked much better this time than during the Concacaf League game it hosted last week), Forge managed to withstand a track meet of a game against a fast, skilled team.
To be honest, it sometimes wasnt our best week of training, just staying sharp, Smyrniotis revealed. The one thing I told the guys is were as fit as weve ever been. The one thing I have not worried about is these guys fitness.
He continued to commend his players even further; as coach, Smyrniotis gets plenty of credit for masterfully planning for opponents, but he pointed out that the players still have to execute.
Sometimes as a coach you can have this plan, you can have the guys prepared, but you need the players to believe in it, he said. I think thats the biggest thing we have in this group: they believe in it.
Now, its onward to well, we dont know where yet. For the first time ever, Forge will have to wait for the results of another game to find out who their next Concacaf League opponent is.
What we do know is theyll be travelling either to Jamaica to play Waterhouse FC, or to Haiti for a clash with Arcahaie FC. Those two sides play on Thursday for the right to host Forge in the quarter-finals.
It wont be lost on Forge that the quarter-final will also present an opportunity to qualify for the 2021 Concacaf Champions League a win there (or, for that matter, in a consolation match against a fellow quarter-final loser) and theyd be in the continents premier club competition.
Until the path forward is a little clearer, though, Forge can savour a moment like this. They dont come around very often.
Today we played an excellent opponent in Tauro, this was an excellent team with a rich history in Concacaf, with a rich history in this competition, Smyrniotis said.
Were happy to have gotten this win, and we hope we can keep on writing some of these magical moments for our city, for our club, for our supporters.

For more intensive information, you can connect it to an activity trackerlike an Apple Watch or FitBitor to third-party phone apps that transmit their data directly into your health dashboard, giving you a full picture of your nutrition (MyFitnessPal), sleep (SleepCycle), and mindful minutes (Breathe). In other words, from the same screen where you can stalk your exes, you can also gain a full picture of your health metrics.
So while doom scrolling in bed when you should be sleeping isnt great for your health (Seriously! Turn on the Bedtime function immediately), there are plenty of other ways to use your iPhone for the sake of your wellbeing. A cardiologist says so.

In his latest YouTube video, British bodybuilder and CrossFit athlete Obi Vincent put his cardio fitness and aerobic endurance to the test when he took on a VO2 max workout. The VO2 max gives an indicator of a person's fitness by measuring their energy output based on the oxygen consumed and carbon dioxide produced during exercise.
"I've never tested my fitness," says Obi. "Throughout school into my twenties, I didn't do any sports whatsoever. Lazy as anything. I did bodybuilding for years, then CrossFit for two and a half years now, and conditioning. I think if I'd done this two years ago, it would have been a lot worse, trust me. So this is a good lesson. I almost avoided doing any fitness test because I was more scared of what it would look like."
After 12 minutes (and the equivalent of 3.6 miles) on the assault bike, Obi's VO2 output is 57 millileters per minute per kilo. "I should not have done this on the assault bike," says Obi, breathless from the workout. "That was a bad idea."

Performance nutritionist Luke points out that the easiest way to up your VO2 max is to lose some weight, which for the stacked Obi would mean losing muscle mass. However, he is already leaner at 242 pounds than he was previously, when he weighed in at 253 pounds, and likes his physique the way it is now, so he's reluctant to get any smaller.
In addition to highlighting areas of his own personal fitness that he wants to work on, Obi adds that he has learned a lot from Luke in terms of fueling his body with the right energy sources for workouts. "I'm actually really disappointed with my score... It'll be interesting to go and start applying some of the things I've learned, and see how I get on and do a retest."

Who knows if this interminable year will ever end. By some counts, we have ten weeks left, but I dont know if I trust it. In any case, it can be comforting to break down the brutal expanse of time into discrete blocks each of which could be occupied with a new fitness experiment for you with some free trials. Free trials are the best! Theyve got hard boundaries (admirable) and feel like an intoxicating combination of (1) a gift someone gave you, (2) something you stole, (3) a formal introduction, (4) a daring way to try something new in a blessedly low-commitment arrangement.
Here are 11 for you to burn through or peruse before making a big commitment:
Despite the premise, Harlem Cycles online classes dont involve cycling, but instead are exercises meant to bolster your cycling (or running) practice. Their online program includes classes in stretching, toning, strength, mobility, and other cardio, as well as nutrition classes. The design of their app is also really well suited to prearranging a weekly schedule, which is something I miss about life in general!
Jessamyn Stanleys magnetic guidance and yoga series which comes with descriptions like highly flammable and practice submission will speak to the most yoga-indifferent among us. Mostly, I am a creature way too distractible and energetic for yoga, so if Im doing a class, it is because I have been wooed by the charm of personality at the helm. Stanleys got charm for days way more than 14 days, but thats the generous trial period she offers.
If the be.come project were a sound, it would be a very satisfied, belly-originating sigh. This 30-minute daily stretching series is calming and satisfying. I also noticed that after a few weeks of doing it, Im way better at balancing.
FORWARD Space classes are an admirable coupling between athletic maneuverings and some hip-hop-raveinflected dancing. Its a very 20-teens party over there. Im a particular fan of their classes that incorporate weights, because they trick me into using my weights.
The Bonded by the Burn ethos is all about low-fi equipment: resistance bands and gliders (little pads that you pop under your feet so that certain core exercises require a lot of extra work) and your sheer tenacity. This has been one of the most challenging workouts I have tried during this quarantine period of virtual class hopping! Im warning you in a way I was not warned.
The production values are stellar with this one! Alo Moves offers a range of classes, but a yogic spirit seems to flow through even HIIT offerings. Their variety and specificity is impressive, ranging from yoga for golfers (nah, girl) or self-care for activists (sure, girl). And if you dont feel like moving at all, but instead like sitting very still, their sound baths are very cozy.
Another big-boy offering! While Peloton is best known as the premier at-home cycling program, the Peloton app goes elsewhere with programs ranging from boot camp to meditations to stretching. A beloved college friend was very into their guided walks for a while and claimed that the steep grade of San Francisco hills made this intense. Girlfriend was stressed, so we should not have teased her but we did!

The coronavirus has made a routine trip to the gym feel like a health threat.
Many epidemiologists consider gyms to be among the highest-risk environments, and they were some of the last businesses to reopen in New York City in early September.
Now gyms must comply with a long list of regulations. Checking in requires a health screening; masks are mandatory, even during the most strenuous workouts; only one-third of normal occupancy is allowed; and everyone must clean, then clean some more.
At a Planet Fitness in Brooklyn, Dinara Izmagambetova, who wore a floral black face mask and had a sheen of sweat after completing a two-hour workout, said she was thrilled to be back in a gym. But safety measures had made it a less sociable experience, she said.
I could ask someone how to use a machine before the outbreak, Ms. Izmagambetova said. Now Im doing a lot of Googling.
Despite all the safety guidelines, some fitness enthusiasts are reluctant to go back and many have adapted to virtual workouts and exercising outdoors. Sales of fitness equipment like kettlebells and Peloton bikes have skyrocketed as people brought their workouts home.
Christopher Carbone plans to cancel his membership at a Planet Fitness branch near his home on Staten Island because of concerns about people who touch the same equipment many times and excess sweat and breathing in range of others.
Instead of going to the gym, Mr. Carbone will keep working out at home with a small set of hand weights.
In normal times, gyms often served as places of solace, where fitness buffs and casual exercisers could sweat out the stresses of the day.
Many former patrons are eager to return to their routines, and gym owners desperately need their business.
But even as gyms have reopened, their future remains unclear. Some of them have had to shut down again after Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo recently designated parts of Brooklyn and Queens coronavirus hot spots.
A Retro Fitness location in Rego Park, Queens, formerly in one of Mr. Cuomos red zones, expressed regret about closing on its Facebook page.
We have done our best to stay open as long as possible to serve you, the post said, adding, We support the city/countys decision as being in the best interest of our members, staff, and community to help curb the spread of Coronavirus.
The gym was recently allowed to reopen as some restrictions were eased.
Despite scientists concerns, infection clusters connected to gyms in the United States have been relatively rare so far, though they have been reported in Hawaii and California.
Were not seeing outbreaks tied to gyms as heavily as something like a bar or school, said Saskia Popescu, an epidemiologist from George Mason University.
Still, a number of the 2,000 or so gyms in New York State and fitness centers across the country face a fight for life. At least one-fourth of the more than 40,000 gyms in the United States could close by the end of the year, according to the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association, an industry group. A study by Yelp said that more than 2,600 already had.
Many of those that have closed are smaller, independently owned businesses that have fewer resources than large national chains like Planet Fitness, L.A. Fitness and Equinox.
Marco Guanilo, who owns Momentum Fitness on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, said he had struggled during the long months he was closed, but that about 50 percent of his business had returned since he reopened.
Still, he was $300,000 in debt, much of it from back rent payments he could not pay. Mr. Guanilo said that he thought his business would endure as long as he could stay open. The recent state-imposed closures have made him anxious.
Im scared of another shutdown, Mr. Guanilo said, because that will put us under.
While major chains may have deeper pockets, many are also in dire straits. Golds Gym, 24 Hour Fitness and Town Sports International the parent company of New York Sports Clubs have all filed for bankruptcy.
Planet Fitness, which has more than 2,000 locations around the world and 40 in New York City, has also faced serious challenges. Its revenue was down nearly 80 percent from the same period last year, according to the companys second quarter earnings report
Despite the bleak numbers, Chris Rondeau, Planet Fitnesss chief executive, said the company has managed to weather the pandemic.
Cancels are a little bit higher, for sure, Mr. Rondeau said, but, he added, people are joining at the same clip they were this time last year.
Planet Fitness furloughed most of its employees during the pandemic, but about 85 percent of them have returned to work and no locations closed, Mr. Rondeau said.
Across the country, states have imposed different regulations to reopen gyms safely. Most require occupancy limitations and at least six feet of social distancing, though some states mandate as much as 14 feet. Requirements for face coverings vary.
Regulations differ even in the states neighboring New York: New Jersey only allows gyms to operate at 25 percent capacity, while Connecticut permits twice that.
Before gyms in New York can reopen they must undergo an inspection over video with an official from the citys Health Department, showing that they have posted safety plans, have spaced machines apart and are using an up-to-code air filtration system.
Fulfilling the requirements and stockpiling cleaning supplies and personal protective equipment can cost more than $10,000, a significant burden after months of inactivity.
As of the beginning of October, the city had inspected more than 1,000 gyms, and only 11 had failed. Failing gyms can reopen once they fix the issues they were cited for. In-person inspections might begin in the near future, officials said.
Dr. Popescu said she believed that the virtual approach to inspections is frankly better than nothing, which is what many have done.
Whatever the risk factor, gyms are certainly different these days.
On a recent weekend at a large Planet Fitness branch in Brooklyn, a masked greeter asked clients whether they had coronavirus symptoms, then collected their contact information.
Television screens flashed reminders to disinfect workout stations, and every other treadmill and elliptical machine was blocked out with yellow-and-purple signs that said, Were practicing social fitnessing. This machine is not available for use. Even so, there were few people working out.
One of them was Dana Fagan, a bookkeeper, 41, who said she was pleased by the precautions being taken.
Im cleaning more the whole thing is wet and Im fine with that, she said about disinfecting the equipment. You can never have enough.
Mr. Guanilos boutique gym normally offers group classes, physical therapy and individual sessions with trainers. The more controlled atmosphere at his gym, where patrons have individual sessions if theyre not in a group class, appeals to people who are concerned about infection, like Joshua Rubin, a 38-year-old director at an accounting firm.
Theres not people wandering around using different machines, Mr. Rubin said. Theres only two to three of us at a time.
Nearby, Jesse Damon, 46, stretched his arms while a trainer verbally guided him, keeping several feet away.
Theyre very safe here, this is a private gym, he said, adding that he went to a gym in Wyoming during a visit in June and it was a lot of 20-year-olds not wearing masks.
Fitness classes normally make up nearly half of Mr. Guanilos income, but the city still does not allow them indoors because officials say they are too risky.
While he was shut, Mr. Guanilo was able to recover some of his lost business through virtual sessions and group fitness classes in Central Park, which involved hauling hundreds of pounds of equipment on a hand truck.
Mr. Guanilos clients want him to succeed, but some are not comfortable returning. Richard Stanger, a 70-year-old business consultant, said he would not go back to Momentum Fitness until there was a reliable treatment for the virus.
We all want life to return to normal, and normal to me would be working out with Marco, Mr. Stanger said. And Im hoping we get there, but Im not optimistic that we can get there before the first of the year.

Idea to replace Air Force fitness test with monthly standards popular on service website
A recommendation to eliminate the Air Force physical fitness test has shot to the top of the rankings on the services main idea submission platform.
The fitness program proposal, submitted Oct. 16 to the Airmen Powered by Innovation website, has received almost 800 votes and is now the most popular suggestion for Air Force Spark Tank 2021, an annual campaign designed to spur creative solutions and improvements by airmen.
Senior Master Sgt. Leslie Finley uploaded the pitch, arguing that the Air Force should change to a monthly, endurance-based program instead of conducting tests once or twice a year.
The service suspended physical training testing May 22 due to coronavirus concerns. Testing is scheduled to resume in January.
Finley, who is with the 59th Medical Wing out of Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, argued that the testing program doesnt lead to a healthy lifestyle, and cites the services new top enlisted airmans vision in a proposal for a focus on sustained fitness.
We believe that the time for change is now, Finley wrote. Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force [JoAnne] Bass laid out her vision in 2020 with the following statement: As airmen I would like to see us in a place where were not so much focused on the PT test as we are more about fitness and readiness.
The switch to gender-neutral minimum monthly requirements for cardiovascular and strength training would eliminate test stress, increase year-round fitness activity, and decrease last-minute injuries that often occur ahead of tests, the proposal stated.
Instead of a test, units would implement new requirements, such as running 20 miles and spending four hours at the gym per month, which would be tracked using an application on a phone or smart watch that monitors physical activity.
However, a plan involving a fitness app could face security challenges. The Pentagon barred the use of fitness trackers and similar phone apps at sensitive locations in 2018 after the app Strava published a global heat map that revealed locations of U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria.
Funding may be required for the development of an application capable of tracking, collecting data and receiving information from other fitness apps, Finley wrote.
Finleys proposal also would have units monitor compliance with the requirements, and fitness programs could be tailored to the individual.
The Air Force already requires unit fitness program managers, and base testing offices could instead focus more on nutrition guidance and coaching, the proposal said.
The idea has received mixed reviews on social media, while garnering more than 1,100 comments on the unofficial Air Force amn/nco/snco Facebook page.
I love this idea, Thomas James commented on the web page. It helps people maintain fitness, and even works around injuries. It assures that people take care of themselves without giving them an anxiety ridden date to be fit by.
Others said they prefer the annual test.
Its easier and less taxing than having my hand held throughout the month and having the Air Force prying even deeper in my life, commenter Alexander Docter wrote on the Facebook page. I prep for my fitness test a month out, take the test, get a 90 and dont have to deal with it for 12 months.
The selection process for idea submissions like Finleys will look at the needs for specific capabilities, as well as concerns about safety, policy, Air Force-wide implementation, technical feasibility and scalability, the Spark Tank website stated.
Six finalists will be selected from the submissions to pitch their ideas on stage at the Air Force Association Air Warfare Symposium in 2021.
