Popular fitness chains ask residents from Ontario’s COVID-19 hotspots not to travel to gyms in other regions – CP24 Toronto’s Breaking News
Two popular fitness chains are asking residents of Ontarios COVID-19 hotspots not to travel to other jurisdictions for a workout following the closure of fitness facilities in Toronto, Peel Region, and Ottawa.
On Saturday, the provincial government moved the three regions into a modified version of Stage 2, closing indoor dining rooms, movie theatres, and gyms for the next 28 days.
Over the past few days, residents of GTA municipalities not currently under additional restrictions say they have seen a surge in traffic at local gyms from people who are travelling from outside the area.
Earlier this week, a video posted on Twitter showed a line of people wrapped around an LA Fitness location in Milton and one guest, who had travelled from Brampton, told CTV News Toronto that they didnt see any issue crossing over into another region.
I think if you follow all the guidelines, wear a mask, it shouldn't be too bad, he said.
LA Fitness has now issued a notice to members, urging people from the three regions not to travel to other gyms to workout.
To be clear, if you reside in a hot spot region, we must ask that you not travel to visit LA Fitness clubs in regions outside your own during the temporary closure. Lets all work together to promote health and safety during this public health crisis, the statement read.
LA Fitness has already frozen the membership status for all members located in these higher transmission areas. This means you will not be billed during the time of this closure, your membership is inactive and you should not be using LA Fitness clubs.
Staff at an LA Fitness location in Vaughan told CP24 that employees are checking ID at the door and turning people away who arent from York Region.
One guest told CP24 early Thursday morning that he has seen lineups outside the Vaughan location all week.
"When I came here last night, they said they came up with another rule that only people that signed up here can actually go to this gym," he said.
Meanwhile, Goodlife Fitness said it is also asking all of its members not to travel to other regions of the province to work out and has actually amended its fitness time booking system to prevent those in COVID-19 hotspots from doing so.
"All Members in these regions were automatically placed on freeze on Saturday, October 10, and they are not permitted to book workouts at Clubs in surrounding regions using the GoodLife App or Member Portal," the company told CP24 on Thursday.
Additional restrictions could be coming for gyms
On Wednesday, Dr. Barbara Yaffe, Ontarios associate chief medical officer of health, said the province is currently reviewing restrictions surrounding gyms in the wake of a recent outbreak at a spin studio in Hamilton.
Officials confirm that 69 COVID-19 cases have been linked to a SPINCO location on James Street.
When it first came to my attention I made recommendations that the public health measures team reconsider the guidelines for spin cycle places and other kinds of gyms, Dr. Barbara Yaffe told reporters on Wednesday afternoon.
Because even though they follow guidelines there was obviously significant transmission so I think we do need to review the guidelines, and that's in process.
Speaking to reporters at a news conference on Thursday, Premier Doug Ford urged people in Toronto, Peel Region, and Ottawa not to travel to gyms or other facilities outside their area.
"Folks, try to work out at home. The big fitness clubs are saying they don't want you to come there and I understand. So if you can, try to work out at home," he said.
Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott warned that this type of behaviour could lead to further transmission of the virus.
"Please stay within your own region, please work out at home. Please obey the rules and regulations affecting your home region so that we don't end up with problems in other regions in Ontario," she said Thursday.
"What we really want to do is bend this curve, get these numbers back down again and if we have people travelling around outside their home area to get some of these services, that is only going to add to our numbers and add to the problem."

HypnotQ Island offers aerial fitness experience in Huntsville – WHNT News 19
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. There are so many ways to work out here in North Alabama. This week on Wellness Wednesday News 19s Jordan Dafnis tested out a style of fitness that not only works your muscles but also stretches you. HypnotQ Island is a brand new fitness experience in downtown Huntsville.
Maybe youve seen aerial performers out at events or shows. This is the type of training they get behind the scenes.
Nydya McQuiller is the owner and also an aerial performer. I love entertaining, I love giving back to people and so I felt that putting them together would be a great thing. So my basis, my purpose, I feel is collaborating the health fitness arts and entertainment together, so that I can give back to the community through my business.
It may look a bit intimidating, but these instructors say this workout is for everyone.
Anyone can come and take this its for the young and the older, I like to call seasoned. You know as far as having strength when you come in. You dont need to have strength when you come in you dont need to have strength, that is what I am here for, said McQuiller.
Its also a workout for all shapes and sizes.
Charyce Ahlschlager is a fitness instructor who also runs the Islands social media. She focuses on making sure plus-sized people or anyone who may feel discouraged from trying this workout knows they can do it.
I focus on the bigger girls, or you know men because often times they feel as though they cant do this and I want to set out to show an example of someone who has been able to do this, said Ahlschlager.
McQuiller also believes health includes body and mind, so she ends each workout with a devotional and opportunity for discussion.
It is very important that you understand its not just about your body it is about your mind so giving that empowerment and letting you know that you are beautiful, you are powerful, you are comfortable in your own skin that is what our initial thing is to give back here, said McQuiller.
So people leave the class feeling like they are walking on air.

BroncoBOLDs emphasis on mental health awareness and psychological fitness – Boise State University The Arbiter Online
Boise State has raised awareness of mental health by creating Bronco Bold, a new program that gives students the opportunity to share their voice and have that voice be heard.
The program serves as a therapeutic outlet for those who have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Bronco Bold is assisting with mental health problems student-athletes may be having with help from coaches and staff within the athletic program.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, during late June, 40% of U.S. adults reported struggling with mental health or substance use.
The program was established on three core foundations: reduce stigma, raise awareness and cultivate resilience.
Joe Nickell, associate athletic director of communications, has worked with third parties to bring more support to the program.
Since the 2017-18 academic year, third parties have been contracted with us to work with student athletes, Nickell said. One example of a third party contact that Boise State has reached out to is Side Arm. The athletic department has invested in their members, according to Nickell these sources are here to help and work as a team off of the field.
A variety of occupations and professions are coming together in order to provide for students. It is imperative to individuals such as Joe Nickell, Jade Loville, womens basketball junior point guard, and Mens Basketball Head Coach Leon Rice that Boise States representatives are continuing to contribute in building a reputation with the program. They are moving forward to make a name for themselves and setting examples through their quotes.
There is independence that exists in the field of competition. While competition tends to divide Bronco Bold provides company to those who compete and struggle mentally.
Bronco Bold is about taking care of our mental health the same way we take care of our physical health. Its recognizing that its ok to not be ok, Loville said.
Loville is the daughter of eight year NFL veteran running back Derek Loville, who played for three teams during his nine year career.
Mental health is not selective when it comes to different people struggling, according to Loville. There is school spirit behind the initiative and how it affects the performance of those who represent Boise State.
Bronco Bold is about coming together as an athletic department, a campus, and a community and building a culture of resiliency and strength. Its about making mental health a priority, Rice said.
Rice has been a turning point in making history at Boise State with his position as head coach for 10 years with the mens basketball team. During this time, he has managed to take the Broncos to five playoff tournaments including eight 20 win seasons.
Womens Basketball Head Coach Gordan Presnell has been coaching at Boise State for the last 16 years and seen the changes in the athletic department over the years.
Bronco Bold is important to everyone because mental health impacts us all. There is no weakness when it comes to seeking help, Presnell said. For more information regarding Bronco Bold, visit https://broncosports.com/sports/2019/9/6/mental-health-awareness-week.aspx or text BroncoBOLD to 41444.
Group Fitness LIVE reminds students that movement is still, in fact, a thing – OSU – The Lantern
Staring down a laptop perched on a desk, Carson Fulks welcomes participants and reminds them to have water ready for his virtual fitness class Zoomba.
Fulks, a fourth-year in marketing, is one of what he estimates to be 60 group fitness instructors at Ohio State who stretched their skills and stayed flexible to virtually continue group fitness classes, now renamed Group Fitness LIVE.
Fulks, who started teaching Zumba in the spring, said students can sign up for virtual fitness classes through the universitys recreational sports website.
Once students join the Zoom call, Fulks begins the meeting with a poll question, such as how midterms are going, then jumps into the choreography.
Im really just trying to connect with them a little bit more, because were not able to do that in person, obviously, Fulks said. He said the class follows a 10-song format with a water break halfway through and ends with a cool-down stretch, all of which can be done from the comfort of participants homes.
Faith Nimely, a fifth-year in accounting and fitness instructor, said that her Total Body Blast class typically unfolds in a bell-shaped curve. Like Fulks, she welcomes her Zoom class with a poll question and launches straight into the 45-minute workout.
My class typically starts with moderate intensity and then high intensity is in the middle of it, Nimely said. You start relatively high, go your highest, and then well come back down with the intensity.
For Nimely, teaching a strength class is a far cry from the norm. She began as a cycling instructor last fall, but the class hasnt been able to meet this semester since most students dont have stationary bikes in their dorm rooms or houses.
Nimely said she was hesitant about teaching virtual fitness classes because the idea of switching her class and transitioning her teaching mode was unappealing, but she eventually agreed.
Over the summer, I missed teaching so much, Nimely said. I used to think it was cycling, but its just the principle of teaching people and helping them better themselves that I really missed the most.
Fulks said he struggled with the new class format as well, and said that some of its worst aspects included smaller class sizes and not being able to feed off of participants energy. Despite changes, Fulks said hes glad he can continue to help people move and better their physical and mental health.
One of the things I always say at the end of every class is just I thank my participants for coming. But I also commend them on the sense that theyre taking a huge step for their overall mental and physical health, Fulks said. All were trying to do, this semester specifically, is we just want people to move, and we dont really care how theyre moving.
Students can register for online Group Fitness LIVE classes, such as yoga, pilates and hip hop fitness, on Ohio States recreational sports website.

5 Fitness Tips Brooke Shields Swears by to Look and Feel Stronger Than Ever at 55 – Prevention.com
Brooke Shields has made her health a top prioritybut when the coronavirus pandemic changed life as we knew it, she had to get creative to keep up with her fitness routine.
When COVID hit, I couldnt go to a gym or see a trainer, and I needed to keep some semblance of control in my life, Shields told Prevention.com in partnership with Life Happens for Life Insurance Awareness Month.
In 2018, Shields had surgery for a partial right knee replacement. I never thought Id have knee problems, and Ive got nothing but knee problems, she says, explaining that her knee function has gotten incrementally worse over the years. Overhauling her approach to fitness has been a key aspect of her recovery.
So, she began virtually working with trainer Ngo Okafor and sharing her at-home sweat sessions on Instagram Livebuilding an active social media community along the way. Doing these little workouts was sort of the only area that I felt I had an ounce of control, she explained.
Shields took her workouts indoors throughout quarantine, using equipment you could find anywhere, like water bottles, soup cans, and resistance bands. Ive always maintained a very active life, the former dancer says. Ive done it for health and strength reasons, because I noticed that Im also healthier minded when Im physically active.
Ahead, Shields dishes on her top fitness tips at 55.
To help regain strength in her knees, Shields began educating herself with a trainer. I really started reintroducing myself to the many different muscles we have in our bodies that lay dormant or dont become activated, she explains. I started feeling much more balanced and stronger, but instead of being incredibly dominant in one area and weaker in another, I became much more overall activated as far as my muscles were concerned.
The actress said targeting areas such as her quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and hips has helped strengthen her knees, and focusing on her core has reduced back pain.
This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.
Before I got my partial knee replacement, I worked out for a year just to prepare myself so that my recovery would be faster, Shields says. So I exercised to maintain the strength and the stability in and around the area thats been the most compromised.
The actress says her left knee now seems to be heading towards full replacement, so shes working to build up strength and stability with that knee, too. I hope that maybe I will be able to avoid a full replacement by doing every other thing thats an option for me, she says.
Strength and stability are key, so she focuses on low-impact workouts with her trainer. Lunges are not for me, Shields admits. Im not at the ability to do that, but everything is low impact and is geared towards the different muscles on and around my knees and my abs.
I think sitting is the new bizarre addiction, Shields says. Its detrimental to health, because what happens is that your body shuts down.
So, whenever she has to sit for long periods of the time, she also makes it a priority to move. There are tiny things you can do while youre sitting down, or you can do an oblique workout in five minutes, she says. Its just a matter of sending a message to your muscles, she adds, so they dont weaken over time.
On top of that, she moves every day no matter whatand it doesnt have to include treadmill sprints. Find something you like to do, she says. During COVID, my daughters and I would just dance like crazy around the living room. And we were sweating! We felt better afterwards, our adrenaline was higher, and we were invigorated.
Shields, whos currently filming a Netflix film in Scotland, gets her exercise in on the road by cycling and horseback riding. Im pretty exhausted by the end of the day, but its kept me motivated to keep doing it. Its definitely hard when you get out of your routine, she says. The key is to find something online thats energetic and fun. Try to think creatively and do little things that you will see over time will start to have an effect.
Getting a massage isnt just for relaxation, according to Shields. I do body work not because of the luxury and pampering, but because it is alignment, its osteopathy, and all of these things that get me through the next week, she says.
Research shows that massage therapy has tons of physical and mental benefits, improving everything from stress to fatigue to joint pain to sleep. You have to be able to treat your body in the way it deserves to be treated, so you have it longer, Shields says.
This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.
As a mom of two, Shields knows first-hand how tough it can be to find time for yourselfbut its so important. We have to realize that, the stronger we are, the better moms we are. And if we carve out time for ourselves, it cant be looked at as a luxury or something for your vanity or your idol, she says.
She compares the body to a house or a car, explaining that you have to take care of it so everyone living within it can be safe. Its like any machine that you have, youve got to keep oiling the car. You have to paint the house. Otherwise, the people that you love are impacted when you deplete yourself by only thinking of them and not you, she says.
For people who think theyve missed the boat on their wellness goals, Shields has an important message: Its never, ever too late to make healthy changes, she says. And they dont have to be drastic.
I think what people start doing, is thinking, Oh, Im 50 or older or Im however many pounds overweight, and you set yourself up for failure and for insecurity by judging yourself, she continues. I say its never too late to start and it doesnt have to be excessive. Start with a little bit of something and see if you can build up. You have to be really conscious of a body thats been taking care of you for so long.

Man City receive major fitness boost with key forward posting progress hint on Instagram – Sports Illustrated
Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus has given fans a major fitness boost after uploading a video at the City Football Academy to his Instagram story on Wednesday afternoon.
The forward has missed two Premier League games and international duty with Brazil, after suffering an injury during the clash against Wolves in City's Premier League opener. The long injury list has left fans frustrated this season, with fellow South American striker Sergio Aguero enduring a lengthy layoff following knee surgery in the summer, and the recent news of Kevin De Bruyne being doubtful for the encounter against Mikel Artetas Arsenal side at the weekend.
Pep Guardiola has been operating with a somewhat makeshift attacking line for the most part of the season, with Raheem Sterling having to adapt to play in a less-favourable striker role. An uncharacteristic five points dropped in two games, the return of an out and out striker could not come quick enough for Guardiola.
Let's hope that with Gabriel Jesus potentially back in his boots, Manchester City's luck could change quicker than expected. The Premier League side are closing in on a hectic period with the club embarking on their Champions League campaign over the next few months.

Apps We Love October 2020: Personal Fitness and Health – CPAPracticeAdvisor.com
The pandemic has resulted in lifestyle changes for many. In addition, the focus on health has all of us thinking more about how we take care of ourselves. We thought this would be a good time to survey our CPA Practice Advisor committee and find out what they are doing to stay in healthy and in good shape. If you're looking for a way to get started with fitness tracking, an alternative to the gym, or just some good tips on staying healthy, these suggestions will give you just the advice you need.
Michael Barton, partner at Petrow Kane Leemhuis, told us, "Ive been using my Fitbit app more than ever since the pandemic started. From food intake to water consumed. Its also useful how it tracks my sleep. All of that info is useful during a stressful time!"
Stacy Kildal, owner, Kildal Services, uses MapMyRide, "to track my 100+ [bicycle] miles per week and now that the weather is getting too cold to ride my fav routes, I'll be using my Cycleops Trainer and the Streaks Workout app."
Melisa Galasso, CEO of Galasso Learning Solutions and director, audit professional practices group, at Cherry Bekaert, said, "I use the Beachbody on Demand app. It gives me options for various exercises that can be done anywhere. I can choose between cardio, weight training, running so I never get bored. I also can also choose based on what I have available where I'm at. It's especiallygreat for travel so I can keep my routine. It's been great during COVID. Plus it tracks progress which is very encouraging!"
Scott Hoppe, principal at Why Blu, recommends Strava, and so does Kevin Bong, co-founder at AuditFile. "Strava is an appfor tracking exercise which incorporates social networking features," said Bong. "It is mostly used for tracking and sharing runs, bike rides, hikes, and walks using GPS data." (Yours truly also uses Strava!)
Donny Shimamoto, managing director at IntrapriseTechKnowlogies, told us, "I like using Aptive. It has a good mix of meditation, cardio, and weights-based training. It also lets you schedule our when you want to do stuff and you can choose from a variety of instructors and music depending on your mood for the day."
"I love multi-tasking hacks, so I looked for a workout app that accomplishes more than one thing very quickly," said Jackie Meyer, CEO of Meyer Tax Consulting. "I came across Splits training (freemium version) that has a daily workout, geared towards doing the splits in 30 days (fit and flexible)!"
Kristin Ingram, clinical instructor of accounting and MSAT director at University of Hartford, told us, "I'm using an app called 99 Walks. It allows you to set your personal walking goal for the month and if you meet it, they send you a bracelet with that month's theme. It's really motivating and the community is fantastic."
Caleb Jenkins, leader of client accounting services at RLJ Financial Services, said, "I havent been one to keep track of my physical exercise in the past but I recently decided to track my bicycle rides ever since I moved out on my own last month. Ive been using MapMyRide to keep track of my distance, average speed, & calories of my bicycle rides. I love the maps produced with the routes I rode which encourages me to share them with family/friends to keep me accountable to my exercise goals. There are a lot of great settings in the app to help maximize the outcomes of my rides."
Jennifer Wilson, partner and co-founder of ConvergenceCoaching, is well known around the profession for running marathons and generally making us all feel like we're coming up short in the fitness department. Here are the apps she suggests:
Garrett Wagner, CEO of C3 Evolution Group, told us, "In 2020, I try and always look for a silver lining, and the increase in remote work has left more time to get out and exercise. For me, my two main go to apps are my Nike Run Club app on my apple watch for getting out for a run and then my Garmin connect app when I want to get out for a couple hours on a relaxing bike ride to really unplug and relax."
Sandi Leyva, president of Accountant's Accelerator, provided three suggestions for us to try:
Samantha Mansfield, founder of Samantha Mansfield, LLC, uses the Apple Fitness app. "Though this is not a new app, they have added some nice new features: more workout types, ways to change your goals through the week, see a weekly summary through the week, etc. I find the challenges they give you each month helps me to mix up my workouts, and appreciate the reminders to get moving."
Joy Lutz, founder of Aligned CPA, said, "I love using the Noom app. This app offers daily mindset topics around exercise and weight loss. It helps you to think about the positives, and to stay committed to your goals. Using the app has helped me to move my body consistently."
Jacquelyn Tracy is partner at Mandel & Tracy, and chair of the AICPA Women's Initiatives Executive Committee. "My Apple watch is my first line of defense as I can track my progress throughout the day with just a glance. Plus, I love when I can see that I have closed all my rings! I am also a big fan of MyFitnessPal. The app allows me to track both my exercise and what I am eating and drinking. Many times it helps me budget my meals. When I know I am going to have a big dinner, I can plan breakfast and lunch to be something smaller or make sure I get out an move more during the day. It is very easy to use and coordinates with my Apple watch."
David Cieslak is the executive vice president and chief cloud officer at RKL eSolutions. He has two recommendations for us:
Blake Oliver, director of marketing at Jirav, told us, "The Activity app on my Apple Watch is what motivates me to get in at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. It also tracks my heart rate, even when I'm not exercising, which is how I was able to empiricallyconfirm that the first 2020 presidential election debate was unusually combative my resting heart rate jumped 67% during the last hour!"
Richard Roppa-Roberts, owner of Quasar Cowboy, starts us off with a series of kudos for the Peloton app. "The Peloton app has numerous workouts and ultimate flexibility. I don't even have a peloton, but I have recently begun using the app to find the 'perfect' workout for me. Sadly, not a single one of those workout routines involvescookies."
Nick Pasquarosa, CEO of Bookkeeper360.com, agrees: "I recently got a Peloton and love that app."
Kelly Welter, partner at Serl Keepfer Welter CPAs, chimes in: "! I completely fell in love with the Peloton app about 6 weeks ago! It is $12.99 a month for unlimited classes. They have a ton of live and recorded classes at all different levels, and multiple time lengths." In addition, Welter added: "We are huge fans of the Meditation, Yoga, Cardio, and Strength classes. They even have kid friendly classes for families to do as a break from virtual learning at home. There are also Running, Biking, Walking, Stretching, Bootcamp, Outdoor Running, and Cycling classes. We do it on the iPad or from the phone. My homeschooled teens start every morning alternating between a 20 minute Yoga or Meditation class. They even have challenges for people to compete with others and themselves. It travels with me everywhere!!!!!"
Finally, Kacee Johnson, strategic advisor at CPA.com and founder of Blue Ocean Principles, weighed in on Peloton as well: "Peloton has been my life saver during the pandemic. Its not just for the bike, the app has outdoor runs, yoga, strength classes that you just cast to your TV and thousands of classes to keep you active without getting bored. I can take it anywhere with me and join different challenges based on my monthly goals."
Natasha Schamberger, CPA, CEO & president of the Kansas Society of CPAs recommends EWGs Healthy Living App: The most powerful tool that can determine your health journey is whats on your fork. However, breaking down a label to know which ingredients are ok and which to avoid can feel overwhelming. The EWGs Healthy Living App does this for you and rates food products based on nutrition, ingredient concerns and degree of processing. This app gives you more knowledge so that you can make even healthier and better choices for you and your loved ones. Eat well, live well!

Additional fitness evaluation has been agreed to in the criminal case of former Effingham resident Gary Schmitt.
The 56-year-old Schmitt is charged in Sangamon County with aggravated criminal sexual assault, two counts of aggravated battery, and a count of unlawful restraint after allegedly attacking a female at McFarland Mental Health Center in Springfield in September.
During a hearing Thursday, a hearing was scheduled for November 12 for further fitness evaluation for Schmitt.
Schmitt was found not guilty by reason of insanity after killing his father in Effingham and attacking a mother and daughter in Edgewood. He had petitioned last year to be released to a group home setting, a request that was denied by Effingham County Resident Circuit Judge Kimberly Koester. Schmitt's appeal of the judge's ruling was on file at the time of the most recent incident.
