runtastic’s New Fitness App Collection Brings the Fun of Outdoor Apps to Your Indoor Workout

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

The colder months can cause even the most dedicated fitness enthusiasts to lose motivation, but that doesnt have to be the case. If you cant wrap your head around running or biking outside in frigid temperatures, you can still monitor your workout progress thanks to a new suite of indoor apps from leading health and fitness app developer runtastic.

runtastic today released the Fitness App Collection, a suite of indoor apps that include all the fun features of outdoor apps but allow you to work out effectively in the comfort and warmth of your home. With more than 14 million app downloads to date, runtastic brings its signature high quality technology to the new app collection. Available for Android phones, iPhones and iPads, the suite consists of four motion-activated apps, including: PullUps, PushUps, SitUps and Squats.

All four apps feature training plans developed by fitness experts to help users gradually improve strength and stamina by working toward the completion of a set number of repetitions. The apps utilize built-in smartphone proximity sensor and accelerometer technology to count repetitions automatically. Voice coach and automatic timer features serve as a virtual personal trainer by counting down the time before and between sets.

You may think youll never be able to do 100 pushups or 150 squats, but our latest apps offer step-by-step training plans to boost your performance over time and make these goals 100 percent attainable, said runtastic CEO Florian Gschwandtner. By expanding our app offerings, runtastic encourages all users to achieve well-rounded workout routines, and new gamification features provide extra motivation to take workouts to the next level.

Community Page and Social Sharing

To accompany the new app suite, runtastic has also launched a new page on runtastic.com called PumpIt, which tracks the entire runtastic communitys Fitness App Collection activities. The four new apps automatically upload statistics from each completed workout to both PumpIt and the users personal fitness profile. Users can also choose to share progress via email or by posting to social media accounts, including Google+, Facebook and Twitter, with the tag #PumpIt.

App-to-App Integration and Gamification

The iOS apps will include a tab to integrate data from across the suite. This Me tab displays personal records for each indoor fitness activity, as well as badges, which users can earn by completing new gamification challenges. Similar features will soon be available for Android.

PushUps, PullUps, SitUps and Squats for Android and iOS are now available for download here.

Study Shows Kiip Rewards Significantly Boost User Engagement in Mobile Fitness Apps

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Kiip, the company that pioneered rewards into mobile apps and games, today further cemented the effectiveness of the rewards layer by unveiling a study that shows how integrating Kiip dramatically increases user engagement and retention across all their app verticals, including fitness and health. Kiip initially grew with a games-based network but has since expanded to more than 600 apps that include games, fitness apps, utility apps, cooking apps and more.

Conducted during August and September 2012 by David Broockman, a researcher studying at UC Berkeley, the study evaluated the effect of Kiip rewards on app user engagement. Results found that users who redeem Kiip rewards spend 225 percent more time in apps than users who do not. Popular fitness apps such as Nexercise and GymPact have already integrated the plug-and-play Kiip SDK to offer users rewards from more than 40 of Kiips top-tier brand partners. Brands themselves are seeing phenomenal engagement rates that exceed 40 percent, more than ten times the industry average.

Our users have really resonated with Kiip rewards because they were fitness-focused, which meant they were relevant to our users, said Yifan Zhang, CEO and co-founder of GymPact. Users are happy to see a Kiip reward right after a workout, which is why we saw such good redemption rates of Kiip rewards. We get to easily go above and beyond users expectations and reward them with real, relevant prizes. Integration was absolutely dead simple, and users have given us positive reviews on the App Store because of Kiip.

The study captures a very interesting dynamic that shows how the rewards value proposition can be an effective user motivator, creating interactions that help apps become a part of peoples everyday lives. Brands can now engage with consumers to improve healthy living, and their rewards help apps increase stickiness over time. User feedback in Kiip-enabled fitness apps has been overwhelmingly positive, with 90 percent satisfaction rates, according to a Kiip survey. The near-universal approval rate of Kiip rewards in fitness apps is the result of tapping into existing streams of behavior and reciprocating mobile achievements with exercise-centric rewards, such as sports beverages and song downloads.

Fitness is the perfect app vertical to showcase the power of rewards, said Brian Wong, CEO and co-founder of Kiip. When we expanded our vision to reward the entire digital ecosystem, we launched the Kiip Fitness Channel as a way to directly help fitness app developers in our network build a stable user base, successfully retain that audience and monetize their apps all while enhancing the user experience. For a mobile rewards platform to make people want to exercise more is indicative of a model that is truly forming meaningful connections between brands and consumers.

The Kiip rewards network redefined mobile advertising and rewards by aligning the interests of users, major brands and game/app developers by linking moments of achievement with rewards from major brands. Kiip now works with more than 40 brands, including American Apparel, Best Buy, Energizer, Pepsi Propel, Popchips, Procter & Gamble, Sony, Verizon Wireless, Wrigley, 1-800-Flowers.com and many others. More than 600 games and apps currently employ the Kiip network, including multiple fitness apps from leading developers such as Nexercise (Nexercise), SoFit Mobile (SoFit), Daniel Miller (Daily Ab Workout) and more.

About Kiip

Kiip is the worlds first mobile rewards network that delivers rewards for achievements in apps and games. The companys category-creating rewards platform enables brands to reach consumers in the moments when they are most engaged and receptive, while driving revenues and greater user allegiance for Kiip-enabled games and apps. Kiip was founded in 2010 by Brian Wong, Courtney Guertin and Amadeus Demarzi. In addition to its San Francisco headquarters, Kiip now has offices in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and London. Kiip is currently backed by Relay Ventures, Hummer Winblad, True Ventures, Digital Garage, Verizon Ventures, Crosslink Capital and others. For more information, visit http://www.kiip.com.

New fitness area open to public at Hobbs Ice Center

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) The holidays are just around the corner, but there's still time to get fit and stay healthy.

Starting Wednesday night the Eau Claire Parks and Recreation Department is giving Chippewa Valley residents two ways to reach your fitness goal on the ice and off at the Hobbs Ice Center.

The fitness center includes weight machines, free weights, stationary bikes, exercise balls, gym mats and an open space room.

The fitness center was originally a part of the remodel project at Hobbs but funding fell short at the end and the room remained unfinished.

In January 2012, Hobbs Facility Manager Stu Taylor says a group of organizations including the Eau Claire Youth Hockey Association, the Hobbs Center Ice Club and University athletics got together and put money together to fund the project.

The fitness area has since been open to athletics programs but now, for the first time its open to the public.

Taylor says its something parents and those working to get a quick workout in their day can appreciate.

So we thought during our public skating hours we'd also open up this fitness room to people who maybe not want to take advantage of the skating opportunities or maybe they have kids that go out and skate and the adults and parents come out here and utilize the fitness room to get a workout in, says Taylor who often sees parents hanging out at Hobbs waiting for their kids to finish open skating.

He says the Eau Claire Parks and Recreation Department strives to promote a healthy and fun lifestyle for the community.

Fitness crucial in Sepang heat

Malaysian MotoGP Venue: Sepang, Malaysia Saturday 20 October: Qualifying: 05:50 - 09:05, Red Button and online Sunday 21 October: Moto2 & 3 races: 05:55 - 08:05, Red Button and online; Moto GP race live: 08:30 - 10:00, BBC Two; Moto GP race repeat: 12:35 - 14:05, BBC Two/HD

MotoGP riders have faced many tests this season - from 215mph top speeds at Mugello to false starts at Misano and running out of fuel in Japan.

But in Malaysia this weekend they are set to come up against another formidable obstacle - searing heat and humidity.

This race is such a tough one because of the heat. Even in the evening when you go out for some dinner it is sweltering and incredibly humid.

I played tennis with Forward Racing rider Colin Edwards yesterday and he said that, while it gets slightly bearable once you are up and running, when you are sat on the grid the riders are dripping with sweat.

It could be about 35 degrees at race time and fitness will undoubtedly come into it. Hauling these bikes around for 20-odd laps is very tiring at the best of times but Sunday will push these riders to the limit.

There is also a very good chance that the riders will have to deal with some rain during the race as it tends to pour down every day at 3pm without fail.

The teams will also be pushed hard because we are in the middle of 'the flyaway' part of the season. Dani Pedrosa won in Japan last weekend, and the teams then came straight here to Malaysia.

Source: The Met Office

After this race the whole circus packs up and goes to Australia for the penultimate ride of the season, so it is very strenuous having three in a row without a base to go back to. They really have to make sure they pack their suitcases properly.

New fitness center opens in north Bibb

By HAROLD GOODRIDGE/hgoodridge@macon.com

The block got a little healthier Wednesday around Tom Hill Sr. Boulevard with the opening of Planet Fitness.

The 16,500-square-foot gym opened in the former Regal Cinema.

The Florida-based fitness center has been pre-selling memberships for about six or seven weeks, but it was slow-going for a while, said David Crumbley, Planet Fitness regional manager. Crumbley said people were skeptical because they were not familiar with the business, but when the doors opened Wednesday, people were flooding in. They know were here to stay, he said.

Crumbley said the centers target audience are people who have never belonged to a gym before. We like to keep it relaxed and welcoming, he said.

More demonstrative gym users and serious bodybuilders are welcome at Planet Fitness, but Crumbley said they should watch their behavior or theyll set off the centers Lunk alarm.

The large red light over the strength training area will be activated and the alarm will sound if a lifter grunts too loud or drops weights on the ground.

That intimidates people, Crumbley said.
