Fitness Zone Helps Enthusiasts With Certification Courses

Bandar Seri Begawan - With the Olympics having come to an end recently, more Bruneians are paying greater attention to sports and healthy activities. An increasing number can be seen working out in the health clubs, enjoying state-of-the-art fitness facilities.

Despite the increase in fitness and health awareness, Fitness Education and Certification courses are lacking in Brunei. Fitness Zone, being the most active health club in Brunei, is taking a bigger approach to encourage and sponsor local fitness enthusiasts to go abroad for their fitness certification courses. One famous fitness programme, Les Mills, is always looking for new recruits to join their team of 75,000 certified instructors working in 14,000 clubs across 80 countries.

According to Wu Chun, the founder of Fitness Zone, "Never underestimate what Bruneians can do. As long as you are passionate about what you are doing and you have a strong will to make it happen, it will materialise. Our coaches do their best to get people to dig deeper, go harder and reach higher. They motivate bodies, inspire minds and lead the way to positive change. Not many people are that committed but its great to be one of the few."

Emily Wong, a member-turned-Les Mills instructor at Fitness Zone who is now certified with the American Council of Exercise, said, "The Les Mills programmes have really changed my life. I first started participating overseas and was happy to find out that the local Fitness Zone offers the programmes when I returned."

A majority of the local trainers have also pursued their degree education in the UK and Australia, and have been greatly influenced by the healthy lifestyle abroad.

Fitness Zone currently has 10 expatriate trainers and 15 local trainers who are internationally certified.

Pole fitness studio opens in Andover

ANDOVER After about 15 minutes of stretching and warmups, Dorian Brown demonstrates how to do a pole crunch.

Welcome to beginner pole fitness class at North Shore Pole Fitness. The new studio, which focuses on pole dancing as exercise, opened several weeks ago on Haverhill Street.

Typically, a first class will also include instruction on pole pull-ups, basic spins and climbing techniques on eight vertical poles installed in the studio. Brown said the poles are more than just a tool for adult entertainment, the vertical apparatus trains the body like no other weightlifting or resistance training available.

You can do an entire workout just using a pole, said Brown, 51, the owner of the new fitness studio. You can use every part of your body.

Brown, who lives in Georgetown, said first-time students need to overcome fear factors before performing anything fancy. While the training can be hard, the instructors also try to keep it sultry.

It is still pole dancing, Brown said. We don't want to be so removed making it just about fitness and boot camp. There is still a dance element.

Eventually students can learn how to do aerial tricks and inversions. Intermediate and expert pole fitness classes are also available.

On Thursday and Sunday, Sexy Stiletto" workouts are offered and there is also a pole fitness boot camp. A second room, without poles, allows them to offer additional classes in yoga and chair dance. The classes are for both men and women. People of all different ages, shapes and sizes can participate, Brown said.

This is the first studio of its kind in the area, Brown said, noting It is tough to find chair dance classes even in New York City. There are only two or three pole fitness studios in the Boston area, she said.

General manager Philip Deal, 32, of Winthrop, who competes in pole dancing competitions nationwide, said pole fitness began catching on in fitness circles around the world in 2006. It started in Australia and the United Kingdom before reaching the United States, particularly the West Coast, Deal said.

Fitness Consulting Group, the company which offers free fitness business coaching through FitBusinessInsider.com, is offering a last chance promotion on a new fitness writing product. The product is available today for $97, but will go up to its price of $147 after Midnight.

The product, How to Get Published: Writing Domination in the Fitness Industry, is now available. It has been designed by leading fitness industry writers to help struggling fitness business owners to get their work published for a mass audience.

Through FitBusinessInsider.com, I have reached a broader audience with my posts on fitness and running a personal training business, says Fitness Consulting Group CEO Pat Rigsby.

On his website, Rigsby has written blog posts on topics ranging from fitness marketing strategies to how to rapidly grow fitness business profits. This, he says, has been one of the keys to attracting clients to his company and thus boosting his own business success.

Rigsby notes that by learning how to write what they know and get it published, personal training business owners can actually improve their own public profile and draw positive attention to their fitness business.

I see it as the ultimate win-win in the fitness industry, Rigsby says. On the one hand, youre helping other personal trainers and exercisers by giving them priceless advice born out of years of experience.

He continues, And on the other, its a form of fitness branding that gets your name out there as an expert whom people can trust.

As Rigsby tells it, fitness advertising can be so much more than just fliers and newsletters. Part of it is just fostering the kind of trust where people can feel comfortable with what you have to offer. Getting published as a fitness writer goes a long way toward establishing that trust.

With that in mind, Rigsby has been strongly supportive of the new product How to Get Published: Writing Domination in the Fitness Industry.

Adidas: Reebok will sharpen its focus as a fitness brand

By Chris Reidy, Globe Staff

The corporate parent of Reebok International Ltd. told an investor conference that it will continue to position Reebok as the fitness brand that caters to such categories as fitness running, gym, yoga, and dance.

Canton-based Reebok is now owned by Adidas, the German footwear giant. Earlier this month, Reebok disclosed that it had reorganized its senior management and eliminated the position of global president.

Adidas said it is reducing Reeboks sales target, in part because it was decided not to renew Reeboks licensing agreement with the National Football League.

In a statement, Reebok chief marketing officer Matt OToole said: Our razor-sharp focus on fitness will allow us to capture the hearts and minds of all fitness enthusiasts worldwide. Our new category structure will already bring more focus and a deeper product offering and will provide better commercial opportunities as we turn the corner into 2013.

Earlier this month, Uli Becker, who was named in 2008 to oversee Reeboks business around the world, was given a new title: president of Reebok North America.

The management change at Reebok followed months of disappointing earnings.

Fitness Pentathlon encourages exercise routine

The six week workout regime, known as the Fitness Pentathlon, began Monday as a fitness-incentive program for students.

Upon registration at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, which comes at no fee to students, each participant in the pentathlon will receive a pentathlon card. Stickers are placed on the card upon completion of each activity pictured on the card. Participants may only earn one sticker per day, according to Pentathlon Organizer Steve Brown.

Thirty minutes is required [to earn a sticker] for each activity, Brown said.

The pentathlon card includes various fitness activities, which are available at the SRWC, such as cardio workouts, strength workouts, group exercise classes and the climbing wall. Swimming at Albee Hall and Pool is also necessary to complete the weekly requirements on the pentathlon card.

[The SRWC tries] to offer a variety [of classes] to appeal to different interests, Kelly Beisenstein-Weiss, coordinator of group exercise at the SRWC, said.

For every week of the pentathlon that a student completes all five activities pictured on their pentathlon card, the student is entered into a raffle for various prizes. Prizes include water bottles, T-shirts, backpacks and more. If a student earns five stickers every week for the duration of the pentathlon, they earn two additional entries into the prize raffle.

Its a way to promote different offerings within the [SRWC] facility, Brown said. We try to offer various fitness-incentive programs throughout the semester. It helps students form a habit of exercising.

The social interaction that comes from working out in a group also helps people stay motivated to work out, according to Beisenstein-Weiss.

Some people like that there are other people there to support them, Beisenstein-Weiss said. Group classes are for people of all fitness levels. I could work with my mom and an elite athlete in the same class, and they would both get a good workout.

Rock climbing at the SRWC is another weekly requirement of the Fitness Pentathlon. The climbing wall is considered part of the Xpeditions portion of the SRWC.

OU Fitness and Recreation launches new program

OU Fitness and Recreation launches new program

See the healthy habit tips at the Shift Gears website.

In a state where health statistics show room for improvement, one OU department is implementing a program to encourage and teach students to stay healthy and active.

OU Fitness and Recreation created the Shift Gears Program, which uses social media and other venues to give tips to promote healthy habits.

One of our hopes and aspirations is that when students come to OU and they spend their education time with us, that theyre not only learning their academics in the classroom, but theyre also learning a healthy way of life that theyll take with them beyond college, said Amy Davenport, the director of OU Fitness and Recreation.

The Shift Gears team includes the fitness and recreation director, instructors and graduate students, and also has been teaming up with UOSA members, Davenport said.

The program has pages on Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare, where it lists tips for a different healthy habit every two weeks.

While we want people to come to the [Huston Huffman Fitness Center] and come to the intramurals, we understand that people cant do that every day," Davenport said. "This is a great way for them to stay in touch and really still be a part of their health and wellness every single day. Its kind of expanding our doors out, which is exciting.

The first habit the program promoted, called the Stop the All or Nothing Mentality, began Aug. 27, according to the OU Fitness and Recreation website. It began promoting the next habit, which encouraged students to drink eight glasses of water a day, Sept. 10
