Details: New Presidential Youth Fitness Program

Latest Exercise & Fitness News

Sept. 13, 2012 -- Goodbye percentile scores, hello "healthy fitness zone."

A new presidential youth fitness program is replacing the old presidential fitness test that most adults grew up with in physical education (PE) classes in school.

The updated program does away with comparing students' performances on athletic tasks like sit-ups and push-ups and then rating them on a percentile scale vs. their peers.

Instead, the new program measures students' health-related fitness based on what current research shows promotes good health and lowers the risk of disease.

"What is really apparent is that we have an obesity epidemic in our country, so we feel like we now need to focus on health versus athletic performance," says Shellie Pfohl, executive director of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition. She announced the new program this week.

Pfohl says that when the original presidential fitness test was developed almost 50 years ago, it was designed to measure children's athletic performance and abilities -- particularly in case they were called into military service.

"By design, the old test compared kids against each other, so by design 50% failed," Pfohl tells WebMD.

Fitness center to open Nov. 1.

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal The community will be able to use the Lockport High School fitness center starting Nov. 1.

District officials decided Wednesday to open the fitness center to locals, as a result of the success Lockport had with the program last year. Athletic Director Patrick Burke said 353 signed up and were issued identification cards, which are needed to enter the fitness center and use the equipment.

Board of Education members decided to open the center to the public last January. Residents used the facility from Feb. 1 until May 24, typically three hours a night Mondays through Thursdays, for a total of 54 days. The fitness center was closed on Fridays, weekends and holidays.

The days wont change this time around, meaning the center will be open for 87 days. That will feature an increase in cost, Burke reported to board members Wednesday.

Last year, the fitness center cost about $2,700 total to operate, roughly $180 a week. With 87 days, the increase would be roughly $1,200 more, an estimated $3,900.

Still, trustees were clearly in favor of opening the fitness center early. Board Secretary Jon Williams said he used the fitness center a number of times, as did other adults and students.

It is a nice facility, he said.

There was a life, an energy there, Trustee Edward Sandell said.

Burke did share a concern. Some of the equipment is in need of updating, the athletic director said. Board members asked Burke to put together options for replacing the equipment, including a possible leasing of machines.

While setting up the fitness center program last year, Assistant Superintendent for Finance Deborah Coder said the district met with its insurance provider about possible liability. That led to each participant signing a waiver, a risk assessment form, signifying the persons doctor had OKd it. The waiver is turned in to the high school or district office and an ID card is given to the participant. All participants must fill out a new waiver, even if they are a returning member.

Fitness author brings multiple disciplines to his craft

Dr. D. Levi Harrison, an orthopedic surgeon and UC Davis Medical School graduate, visited his alma mater in August to talk to students about the role that fitness plays in medical education.

Harrison, who recently published a book titled "The Art of Fitness: A Journey to Self Enhancement" (Brio Press, $39.95, 232 pages) holds undergraduate degrees in electrical engineering and romance languages, and graduate degrees in physics and French in addition to his medical degree. He has a private practice as a hand specialist in Glendale.

Why did you decide to write a fitness book?

It's about letting people know that fitness and exercise are lifestyle choices that we have to make to not only have the aesthetic of looking healthy on the outside, which is the superficial part of fitness. I wrote the book so people can understand that fitness is from the inside out.

What makes your book different from other fitness books?

It's geared toward anyone of any fitness level. The book is about helping people to not only get healthy, but make lifestyle changes. The goals of the book aren't about achieving an aesthetic. The goals are to decrease the rates of diabetes, hyper-tension, cardiovascular disease, stroke, cholesterolemia and obesity.

The book is really there to let people know that they shouldn't compare themselves to anybody. The goal is to remind people that your body is yours and that where you are today is a good place.

So if you're overweight, you're underweight, you're not very fit, that's OK. Every day you get to start the journey again.

Where do you think fitness education fits into today's medical school?

I definitely think fitness, health and nutrition should be a greater part of all medical school education.

Presidential fitness program switches focus to personal health

CHAMPAIGN, ILL. A national program that promotes youth fitness is changing to emphasize health over performance and materials published by Champaign-based Human Kinetics will be part of the new program.

The President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition announced Monday it is replacing the President's Council Youth Fitness Test with the Presidential Youth Fitness Program.

The new program will use Fitnessgram, an assessment that reports on a student's individual health and fitness.

"It tells you how healthy you are, based on what you should be able to do for someone in your age group," Human Kinetics President Brian Holding said.

That's a change from the old youth fitness test, which compared a student's performance with those of his or her peers.

Fitnessgram software published by Human Kinetics for the Cooper Institute measures health-related fitness by evaluating cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition.

Fitnessgram has been adopted by many metropolitan school districts, including those in New York City, Indianapolis and Miami, Holding said.

The software also has been adopted statewide by Texas, Georgia and Delaware and is used in much of North Carolina, he added.

Holding said it's estimated that two-thirds of the schools that do physical fitness testing have been using Fitnessgram, and the other one-third have been using the President's Council Youth Fitness Test.

But with the President's Council switching gears, all those schools stand to be using Fitnessgram, he said.

US obesity epidemic propels fitness as career

The US obesity epidemic is pushing more Americans to pay attention to their health and leading a healthier lifestyle. Reuters pic

Employment of fitness trainers and instructors is expected to grow by a brisk 24 per cent in the decade to 2020, according to the US Bureau of Labour Statistics, as businesses, health professionals and insurance companies take sharper aim at the sedentary lifestyle.

The obesity epidemic has produced a lot of noise and talk and chatter, said Cedric Bryant, chief science officer of the American Council on Exercise (ACE), which has certified more than 50,000 fitness professionals.

Helping individuals be more active is important and fitness professionals can be at the centre of that, he said.

Obesity rates have skyrocketed in the last 20 years. More than one third of adults in the United States are obese, according to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

Bryant said the health crisis is strongly linked to the lifestyle choices that fitness professionals, such as personal trainers and group fitness instructors, address.

Despite the shaky economy, health club membership is up more than 10 per cent over the past three years, according to IHRSA, the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association.

Exercise physiologist and ACE spokesperson Jessica Matthews said workplace wellness campaigns also increase demand for fitness professionals.

Bryan said the average salary for a certified personal trainer is about US$53,000 (RM164,000) and rising. A high school diploma is sufficient to begin a career in fitness, he added, although more than two-thirds of professionals have college degrees.

Matthews said the industry attracts career changers driven by the downturn to reinvent their working selves.

Fitness barre set higher in Beachwood business

BEACHWOOD - Pepper Pike resident Yana Salwan just set the fitness barre higher in Beachwood. She recently opened Barre Cleveland, Northeast Ohios first Barre fitness studio.

Barre Cleveland is a women-only studio hidden behind red brick in suite 209 at 3737 Park East Drive. The exterior is nondescript, as a sign has yet to be mounted. The interior is calming with paint colors in shades of green, blue and brown. The space has a beach vibe - something that may be most refreshing to participants come winter.

It is a little refuge for women, Salwan said.

I want women to come here, feel comfortable and create new friendships.

It is important for moms to instill healthy habits in themselves and their children, Salwan said.

Salwans husband is Mario and mother to eight-year old Ashton, a third-grader at Moreland Hills Elementary. Happy wife happy life, Salwan laughed.

In order to be happy, one must be healthy too, she continued. Barre is a type of exercise that incorporates aspects of classical ballet, Pilates, yoga and other strengthening exercises. It was developed more than 50-years ago by Lotte Berk, a German dancer. Berk sought to find an alternative exercise after a back injury and came up with Barre. The exercise method was brought to the United States by Lydia Bach.

Studio owner Salwan has been working on her fitness since college where she ran track religiously. Her knees began to hurt, so she shifted her focus to group fitness classes, such as step aerobics.

After her son was born about eight years ago, Salwan left her career as an analyst at Progressive Insurance to pursue a full-time one in fitness. She has held personal and group fitness training certifications since 1997 and most recently worked as the group fitness manager at Lifetime Fitness. However, years of high-impact workouts gave Salwan three herniated discs in her back.

She needed to find something else to keep her in shape - and able to work as a fitness instructor, she said.
