About beyondHeavy
Im a food writer who, with zero previous interest in anything athletic, was lured into powerlifting and found a love of getting strong. On this blog I chronicled my year-plus long experience of transforming from a couch-loving writer with a penchant for macarons to an athlete, a record-holding powerlifter, with a truthful look at the moments of glory, despair and a whole lot of work along the way. My powerlifting career ended with an injury and surgery in winter 2012 but the power I discovered didnt vanish when I hung up my weight belt. Im on a quest for my next adventure now. To find a new passion Im learning one new sport a month for a year. I had (and still have!) a lot to say about heavy lifting for women. I have written for Elle magazine, Experience Life Magazine, blisstree.com, xojane, and local Louisville publications on fitness topics.

Midlife Fitness May Mean Healthier Old Age, Study Finds

By Jenifer Goodwin HealthDay Reporter Latest Senior Health News
MONDAY, Aug. 27 (HealthDay News) -- Staying physically fit in middle age makes it less likely that you'll develop chronic diseases ranging from heart disease to certain cancers in old age, new research finds.
"Not only do the people with higher fitness live a little bit longer, the onset of chronic disease occurs even later, so that the amount of time you spend in your life with chronic diseases is compressed into a smaller period of time," said senior study author Dr. Jarett Berry, an assistant professor of internal medicine at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, in Dallas.
For people who are unfit in middle age, the data suggest that even a modest increase in fitness could translate into fewer chronic conditions.
For the study, researchers examined information on nearly 19,000 men and women with a median age of 49 who were taking part in the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study, which has tracked the health of mostly white, healthy, well-educated participants since 1970.
Researchers matched up data from the Cooper Study with Medicare claims information starting when participants were 65. Follow-up occurred for a median of 26 years.
Participants' fitness levels were divided into five quintiles, or fifths, based on how fast and how long they could run on a treadmill.
The most fit at midlife were less likely at age 70 and up to develop a host of chronic diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, colon or lung cancer, congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, type 2 diabetes and heart disease than the least fit.
Fitter patients were also somewhat more likely to live longer, and to spend more of those years free of chronic diseases or with fewer chronic diseases, the researchers said.
An analysis of about 2,400 people who died during the study found that fitter people had fewer chronic diseases during their last five years of life. The most fit spent about 50 percent less time with four or more chronic diseases than the lowest fitness group, and 34 percent more time with only one or no chronic disease.

Three Common Fitness Myths Busted!

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire -08/29/12)- Health and fitness has become an integral part of today's culture with more and more people hunting for recommended personal trainer courses to whip them into shape, and to help others achieve their fitness potentials. With the increased interest in health and fitness come rumours surrounding exercise that many people swear by, but just how much truth is in them?
Here are three fitness myths you need to forget:
This is a common misunderstanding. Research has shown that exercise has no effect on your food needs, with the exception of endurance athletes who exercise for around two hours or more a day. To the contrary, studies have shown that exercise can suppress hunger both during and after a workout, so don't stuff your face as soon as you've done a workout - you're only undoing all your hard work.
Wrong! Different food types have different effects on your blood sugar. Refined carbohydrates (white bread, fruit drinks and biscuits) will raise your blood sugar levels incredibly, which can encourage fat storage and weight gain. Fibrous foods like apples and protein will raise blood sugar less. Foods that contain a lot of water, like vegetables and soup will fill you up on fewer calories.
If you diet and don't exercise, there is potential to lose calories in the short term, but experts say that it's exercise that will keep the pounds off for good. Exercise builds muscle, which takes up less space than fat. Muscle tissue requires more calories to sustain it than fat tissue, so effectively the more muscle tissue you have, the more calories you'll burn at rest. So if you're thinking of really trying to get in shape for good, don't just diet, exercise too and check out personal trainer courses if you want to make the most out of your fitness.

CNN We all know that exercise and fitness are key components to healthy living. Now new research is adding further proof that it will increase your quality of life.
The study, published in this week's Archive of Internal Medicine, finds that being fit in the middle of your life not only delays the onset of chronic diseases later in life, but also shortens the duration of disease.
"We've known for years that exercise is good for you, but what's not been clear is to what extent the health benefits persist across a lifespan," said study author Dr. Jarrett Berry, associate professor of medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
Berry and his co-authors surveyed 18,670 patients, from the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study, one of the largest patient databases in the world looking at fitness indicators. The Cooper Center began collecting patient information in 1970, and now has more than 100,000 patients enrolled in its database.
The study selected patients who were 65 years or older as of January 1, 1999, and measured their fitness level by having them walk on a treadmill. The patients were then organized by sex, age, and divided into five different fitness levels ranging from very low to very high.
For the next 25 years, study authors followed up on their fitness levels and recorded any chronic disease.
"It's not just heart disease and just cancer -- it's all kinds of chronic diseases, " said Berry.
Patients' Medicare records were assessed for the following conditions: Congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, stroke, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, Alzheimer's, and colon or lung cancer.
When looking at men, the incidences of chronic disease was reduced by 45% between the group with the highest fitness levels, and those with the lowest. For women, the difference between the two groups was 43%.

Bandar Seri Begawan - Fitness Zone yesterday celebrated its ninth anniversary with members at the Kiulap branch.
The event saw 38 members who joined the club within the first month of Fitness Zone's launch in March 2003 being commended for their loyalty and commitment in sharing the club's vision to support the pursuit of good health.
The milestone marked the club's continuing commitment and desire to promote a healthy lifestyle and play a key role towards raising awareness on the constituents of good health through the varying modes of exercise regimes, while at the same time pushing gym enthusiasts with newer benchmarks.
Wu Chun, the owner of Fitness Zone said that the club will introduce the Diamond Club Loyalty Programme to reward more than 1,500 loyal members who have been with them for three or more years, whereby they will be able to invite two guests free of charge during specified days of the week.
"We always hope to inspire people in all areas of their life," he added.
Meanwhile Dr Raja, a club enthusiast, expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the club's establishment.
"Being a member for so long, I admit I gave a lot of comments along the way and although they didn't give me 100 per cent of what I requested, but most importantly, they listened, and I feel their sincerity and their desire for improvement never failed me from day one," he said.
The anniversary celebration also coincided with the opening of a new Mr Baker's Bakeshop branch conveniently located nearby.
Sharing the same level of ambition as its neighbouring business, Mr Baker's Bakeshop owner Eric said that he looked forward to working together with Fitness Zone in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
In conjunction with the anniversary, members of the public are invited to a 'Welcome Back Hari Raya Open House', which will last for five days.

Fitness at Middle Age Leads to Lower Risk of Chronic Disease in Senior Years
Even study participants who died had fewer chronic ailments to the end
Aug. 27, 2012 - A new study declares that fitness in middle age points to less chronic health problems in later life. And, even those who died in old age, seemed to have less of these chronic ailments right up to the end. The study involved both senior men and women, older than 65, who were Medicare patients.
The study was published Online First by Archives of Internal Medicine, a JAMA Network publication. But, the findings came with a caution flag waved in a commentary by Diane E. Bild, M.D., M.P.H., of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
The research was by Benjamin L. Willis, M.D., M.P.H., of the Cooper Institute, Dallas, and colleagues. They examined the association between midlife fitness and chronic disease outcomes later in life by linking Medicare claims with participant data from the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study, a large group of individuals who were examined at the Cooper Clinic from 1970 to 2009.
The study of 14,726 healthy men and 3,944 healthy women, with an average age of 49, when they entered the study, used eight chronic conditions (CCs) for the analysis: congestive heart failure, ischemic heart disease, stroke, diabetes mellitus, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, Alzheimer disease, and colon or lung cancer.
In the present study, higher fitness measured in midlife was strongly associated with a lower incidence of CCs decades later, the authors note.
With a median follow-up of 26 years, the highest level of midlife fitness was associated with a lower incidence of CCs compared with the lowest midlife fitness in men 15.6 vs. 28.2 per 100 person-years and in women 11.4 vs. 20.1 per 100 person years, according to the study results. Age- and sex-specific quintiles of fitness were based on treadmill times.

Several female participants of Health Promotion Centre's Healthy Lifestyle Clinic Programme seen during a routine exercise at Fitness Zone in Serusop.
By Diyana Ibrahim The Brunei Times/ ANN Saturday, Aug 25, 2012
Gyms or fitness centres big or small are popular haunts for fitness junkies of all ages, however, centres that are especially catered for women are still hardly known of or easily accessible according to some.
This is becoming more apparent as the nation moves towards a more healthier lifestyle, and more Bruneians are becoming health-conscious and are adopting the habit of consistently exercising in order to keep fit.
While there are those who go outdoors for a run or go to recreational parks for a hike, others attend various classes for cardio exercises and prefer to hit the gym.
In previous reports, fitness gyms for women have been said to be a growing target market with the opening of establishments like Ladies First in Serusop in 2008.
Even mixed fitness centres such as Fitness Zone and Zunic Wellness have attributed that their clienteles are mostly of the female population, it mentioned.
Despite this, laments for these establishments are still abound.
The Brunei Times did a look-through of the buildings in Serusop for Ladies First yesterday and uncovered two fitness gyms for women instead: De Chantique Fitness and Women's Fitness Zone.
With De Chantique Fitness closed until August 27, 2012 for Raya, a visit to the Women's Fitness Zone yielded results - its aerobics trainer revealed that the gym has been "around for a while" and that they are currently renovating its space so that the gym equipments section will be separated from its aerobics area.

He lives independently in a tidy Mukilteo condo, drives and still works a little.
His trim middle would put quite a few 20-somethings to shame.
"I see a lot of people younger than me with one foot in the grave," Peterson said.
His secret: exercise. In particular, he credits a fitness class he regularly attends at the Carl Gipson Senior Center in Everett.
It's called Enhance Fitness, and it blends low-impact aerobics, strength training, flexibility, balance and what instructor Vicki Cairns describes as "silliness."
What she means is her students have fun. They crack jokes, trade stories and support each other when times get tough.
The class is as much a social club as a workout. Many of those who show up end the class with a cup of coffee and conversation.
"It's physical health and mental health," Cairns said.
The class was developed by Senior Services of Seattle along with the University of Washington and Group Health Cooperative in the mid-1990s.
