I Was Tired of Training. But Then I Thought of R.B.G. – The New York Times

Justice Ginsburgs value as a role model for the hundreds of women whove followed her into the law and onto judicial benches across the country has been well appreciated and will, rightfully, make up the bulk of her legacy, along with the ways she helped shape the law to support under-represented groups in court.

But to me, it was also powerful to watch her lead by example in terms of shaping what it means to act like modern older woman, especially when it came to her relationship with her body.

Justice Ginsburg upended models of what exercise for women can be, particularly for older women in a country that values youth. She wasnt working out to look smaller, to take up less space. Her gym habit was both a visible symbol of her toughness and her willingness to reinvent herself, but also a signal of her determination to endure.

And if she could, I could.

The last time I was tired from a marathon session of Zooms, I remembered that three weeks after major cancer surgery in 2009, Justice Ginsburg still showed up for the State of the Union address. What was my excuse? I went for a jog.

When I was sick of running last fall while training for a race, wondering if my fastest times were behind me, I remembered that well into her 80s, Justice Ginsburg was still doing 20 push-ups, sets of 10 at a time, and she wasnt exactly sleeping in either. I could do the final few miles. I could handle the pace, too.

When I was tired last night writing this, fretting over unsent emails and languishing lists of to-dos, I remembered that just months ago, Justice Ginsburg criticized her fellow justices for leaving women workers to fend for themselves when it came to contraception, participating in the cases oral arguments from a hospital bed because of a gall bladder condition. She didnt give up. I was fine.

Riverside County gyms and fitness centers cleared to reopen at reduced capacity under red tier – KESQ

Members are working out once again at Power of Fitness in Palm Desert.

Those who spoke with News Channel 3 said at least now they can resume their fitness routines interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"I think it's great. People need to get out and exercise and keep a healthy lifestyle you know," said club member Leo Valenzuela.

The news also took the weight off the shoulders of health club operators, including Ken Ebner.

Ebner says for most of the past 6 months his 2,900 members were not being charged their monthly dues, while most of his expenses continued.

He is now left with what he calls "heavy debt".

"We've been able to squeak by as they say. The reopening helps us out a lot so now we can start to get back to business," said Ebner.

The sign on the wall of the main workout area showed "maximum occupancy" for the space is one 179.

Ebner says he and his staff are ready to enforce the ten percent limit for th number of people working out.

They also have some cardio machines taped off to help members maintain proper social distancing.

Ebner says the steps they're taking to protect members and staff include adding additional hand sanitizer dispensers, doubling their cleaning schedule and requiring members to carry towels to be used for wiping down machines.

Gyms and health clubs in the county were allowed to reopen for about four weeks in June, but were ordered to close indoor activities again when the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the county spiked.

Ebner hopes it doesn't happen again.

"It has been very tough for the past six months. I hope this is the final phase of the shutdown. We'll have to see," said Ebner.

The health clubs hours are also reduced.

Weekday hours are 5:00 am to 9:00 pm.

Weekends it's 7:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Founded by an Olympian, Eat The Frog Fitness celebrates one year of offering 24/7 classes, personalized training in Carmel – CBS 4 Indianapolis

Posted: Sep 23, 2020 / 05:15 AM EDT / Updated: Sep 23, 2020 / 06:24 AM EDT

CARMEL, Ind. In college, there was the Freshman 15 but nowadays were hearing more and more about the dreaded Quarantine 15. And when it comes to fitness, there are plenty of options out there but do they fit your schedule?

Originally co-founded in 2014 by Olympic decathlon gold and silver medalist, Bryan Clay, Eat The Frog Fitness is a high-tech, personalized group fitness studio that sets itself apart by offering classes 24-hours a day.

We decided to check out the Carmel location which opened just over a year ago off Pennsylvania Street near Carmel Driveto see what its all about.

Were hopping back into fitness on this tripIn Your Neighborhood.

Eat The Frog is actually a quote from Mark Twain, who said If your job is to eat a frog, its best to do it first thing in the morning, explained Eat The Frog Fitness Carmel owner and general manager, Daniel Frausto. Which basically means that you have to do the most difficult task of the day first and the day is only going to get better after that so stop procrastinating and just do it.

For some, that first task is a workout.

And since not all schedules are the same, Eat The Frog Fitness is open 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, with both in-person coach led-classes and in-studio virtual classes.

We have 2 big IMAX screens in the room so they can follow the prompt from those IMAX screens, said Frausto. The IMAX screens are prescribing the class, how much time you have left of a particular exercise, how many repetitions, what exercise is coming up next and what your heart rate target should be at.

Four Things You Need to Know About Eat The Frog Fitness:

The studio itself is divided in two different sides.

On the right side, we have what you call the traditional side, where we have the low-impact equipment including Keiser spin bikes and Concept2 rollers, he said. On the other side of the studio, thats what we call the functional side. We have TRX straps and Alpha sandbags to do the functional component.

Classes are about 55-minutes long and differentiated by three different formats: cardio, strength and agility.

During the workout, you can monitor your heart rate and progress on the big screens using their Frog Pod heart rate monitor.

But Frausto says the monitoring feature is less about the competition aspect than it is about tracking their effort and progress.

All of our members go through a fitness assessment so we can understand the baseline fitness level, their fitness goals, and based on that we give them a personalized fitness plan for the next 8 weeks, he said. And we continue to reassess every 8 weeks so they can track their progress objectively.

Brits on bikes: Millions take to cycling in pandemic, fitness-app data show – Autoblog

Bicycle racks are full as commuters avoid public transportation during London's coronavirus lockdown in May. (Getty Images)

LONDON Active travel is booming in Britain as millions of commuters, shoppers and schoolchildren get on their bikes to avoid confined spaces on public transport during the COVID-19 pandemic, data from the fitness tracker app Strava showed on Wednesday.

The city of Liverpool saw the greatest year-on-year rise in cycling, with an increase of more than 220% for people taking at least one trip by bike.

The UK data, seen exclusively by Reuters, also showed the peak of Britain's cycling popularity growth surge came in May 2020, coinciding with the height of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions across Britain.

Strava spokesman Gareth Nettleton said the app is now making data freely available to local authorities to help them plan improvements to cycle paths and streets to enable more people to replacecarjourneys and choose to ride, jog or walk instead.

"We're desperate for this not to be a COVID blip," Nettleton told Reuters. "We're doing this now - making the data available - because the only way this doesn't become a COVID blip is if infrastructure gets improved on the back of what's happening right now.

"This is about how we create infrastructure so that active travel is a viable alternative, not just for those in lycra who go for long distances, but for anybody doing the nursery drop-off or going to the shops."

The data showed that London, where cycle commuting was also growing in popularity before the pandemic, ranked fifth in Strava's growth table, with a rise of 119% behind Manchester at 169%, Glasgow 146% and Birmingham 134%.

Across the country as a whole, the analysis which compared the overall number of people traveling by bike in May 2020 with the same period in 2019 found that cycling rose by 162%.

Chris Boardman, a former Olympic cycling gold medallist and now a campaigner for active travel, also urged urban planners to seize the opportunity to take the cycling trend "from a lockdown spike into a long-term solution for the country".

Bay Area fitness community moves from yoga studios to paddleboards in the pandemic – SFGate

Bay Area fitness community moves from yoga studios to paddleboards in the pandemic

Its 6 a.m. on a recent Saturday. The Sausalito waterfront sky is dim. Steve Hayward, Seatreks Fitness Program Manager, is here early to check the air quality monitor on the porch outside his office. If the Air Quality Index (AQI) is 140 and rising toward the red zone, he starts sending texts and emails, cancelling upcoming paddleboarding and kayaking reservations.

Leigh Claxton, who shares the dock and teaches classes for Seatrek, is one of the folks waiting to hear from Hayward. Poor air quality is the latest significant issue Claxton has navigated this year. Her unusual-sounding business, however, is managing just fine.

That business, under the Seatrek umbrella, is called OnBoardSUP, which brings yoga out of the studio and onto paddleboards. (SUP stands for stand-up paddleboarding.) Its an idyllic-sounding combination if youre coordinated, anyway and was among the first fitness classes in the area to re-open after the COVID-19 shutdown. Working with the Marin County Health Department, Seatrek implemented localized safety protocols including sanitizing equipment and extended business hours to limit groups to no more than 15. Instead of walk-ins, reservations are now required.

While gyms are shuttered and team sports are on hold, many people have hit the water and opted to attempt a relatively safe, socially distant outdoor exercise. All over the world, kayaking, paddleboarding and bicycling is up, Hayward says. What else are you going to do for exercise? Sure enough, according to the market research group NPD, paddle sports saw a 56% increase in sales in June 2020 compared with June 2019. Claxton, whos been teaching for 11 years, says her Saturday and Sunday classes are usually sold out early in the week.

Without gym access, Jody Baron, an infectious disease doctor at UCSF, has doubled her paddleboard yoga time. Its the only thing you can do in-person as a group right now, she says.

Baron found a listing for paddleboard yoga while searching online for a less involved yoga on the beach. After months of feeling hesitant, she decided to give it a try. Its intimidating, she says. I didnt know anyone who was doing it. But I thought, if I dont do it now, I never will. So I just showed up.

Cathy Stauffer initially felt the same way: Id always been intrigued by paddleboarding, but it seemed out of my reach, she says. She thought she wouldnt be able to stand up on the board, let alone do yoga on the board, but signed up for a class and has been hooked ever since. For me, nothing beats exercising outdoors, she says. Add to that the seals, the sea lions, the feel of the wind, and the unbelievably beautiful views you get of the city from Sausalito. I grew up here but I never really had a connection to the water before.

An OnBoardSUP participant.

A connection to the water isnt immediate almost everybodys afraid theyll fall in at first. People are super wobbly on the board at the beginning, Claxton says, but within about 30 minutes that stops. Its easier to find balance on the board than on a floor, because the board gives you feedback when youre off-center and you naturally correct. Shes even had non-swimmers take her classes.

Most yoga paddleboarders are studio practitioners, but not always, and Claxton does offer beginner classes. Jordan Hymowitz, an investment manager, tried it for the first time to help recover from surgery. Ive been an athlete over the years and I like being outdoors on the water. Its difficult to fall off, unless youre a klutz like me, he jokes. He did fall. But it was no big deal and easy enough to get back on the board. Its relaxing for my back, he says, which is the main reason I do it.

While paddleboard yoga is available at other locations, Claxton says some people drive from the South Bay because its special here. Theres always something happening on the waterfront.

Baron agrees: Its a respite from everything thats going on in the world for a short period of time, she says. Being outside on the water doing yoga poses is an amazing experience. Everything feels so natural.

Fit And Well: Beatz Fitness – KSN-TV

I took a fun trip out to McPherson, Kansas, to the Mt. Hope Sanctuary House to learn about the important impact they have on people's lives and helping them get back on their feet! First, I spoke with Mark Hassman, the owner of Hassman Termite & Pest Control to hear about why they are a huge supporter of the Mt. Hope Sanctuary House. I then had the chance to chat with Julie Holloway, who is the Executive Director of the house, to learn more about the resources they provide for people. Julie explained that they are a transitional home for women and children in the event that they find themselves homeless. They can then apply and come live at the house until they are ready for the next chapter in their life. They have a couple of different programs people can apply for. They have a shorter program called Rise, which stands for renew, inspire, succeed, and engage. That's roughly a 60-day program to help them find a job or build up a bit of savings. There is also a longer-term program that helps them become more self-sufficient and they get a life coach to be more hands on to help them get back on their feet. Lastly, we touched upon their event Taco Tuesday which they have coming up on September 29th in McPherson. This is a really important fundraiser for the house as they had to cancel all of their fundraising events in the spring. If you want to learn more information about Mt. Hope Sanctuary or want to contribute, you can visit their website at: http://mthopesanctuary.org

Chicago Startup Predicts The Future Of Fitness Post Pandemic – Forbes

Consumer behavior completely changed during the global pandemic

The $4.5 trillion global wellness economy is being transformed before our eyes. Those that invest in the trends that stick and dominate will be significantly healthier, at least financially. There are some clear winners weve seen during the pandemic, but based on market trends and consumer feedback, the landscape continues to shift.

To help shine a light on how wellness consumers, fitness professionals and gym owners see the future of fitness once the dust settles, I met with Jeana Anderson Cohen, the founder and CEO of aSweatLife. Her firm has had a finger on the pulse on the latest fitness trends over the past few years thanks to its annual State of Fitness survey.

Given the enormous disruption of the fitness industry resulting from the pandemic-related lock-downs and social distancing, aSweatLife recently conducted The State of Fitness During the Global Covid-19 Pandemic survey. The results were clear. This pandemic has been a massive moment of behavior change for fitness.

Forced gym closures and social distancing practices greatly impacted the fitness industry as health enthusiasts stopped gym visits and transitioned their fitness routines to digital at-home offerings. In some cases, the shift was counterproductive to the business interests of fitness professionals. Live workout broadcasts via free platforms like Facebook, Instagram and YouTube flooded the social nets and threatened to change the consumer value perception of the fitness industry, which is often priced as a luxury.

This shift is not only driving demand for at-home workouts but is also creating opportunities for startups geared toward a new era of digital fitness. The market is seeing products such as at-home fitness devices and digital apps, as well as fitness experts pivoting their programs to social media and new digital platforms.

People are embracing digital fitness. According to aSweatLifes data, a staggering 86% of their survey respondents are using some form of digital fitness, compared to data in January when nearly 50% of respondents didnt use ANY form of digital fitness. Companies like Peloton, Hydrow, Mirror and Tonal that sell digital at-home workout devices are set to be the biggest winners. Their products can be connected to social workout platforms and incorporate modern data-tracking capabilities into physical workouts. However, the question emerges: will the average Jane or Joe be able, or be willing, to pay for the expensive equipment and the ongoing monthly subscription of these products?

As price-conscious consumers seek at-home fitness solutions, fitness apps and fitness experts offering digital alternatives will benefit from a plethora of new users. ASweatLife data shows that 45.5% of their respondents are sweating with a digital fitness app, 36.7% are working out via Facebook or Instagram Live and 30% are using fitness content on YouTube. While this market is ultra-competitive with many free online alternatives, high-quality fitness solutions will have the opportunity to generate sustainable subscription revenue. Along those lines, Jeana predicts three types of consumer behavior will emerge:

Consumer behavior completely adapted during the global pandemic. For many, this has been an introduction to the fact that working out at home may be as effective and provides them access to online gyms and fitness programs geographically far away from them. Jeana expects some claw-back as studios and gyms reopen, but never a full return to the numbers from before. This is especially evident in consumer spending. In early 2020, aSweatLife found that the average monthly consumer fitness spend was $100.34, but amidst the pandemic, 39% of respondents were doing all of their fitness for free, and another 20% were spending $0-25 monthly.

These spending changes will clearly have an impact on firms like ClassPass, which depends on an active network of gym-goers to generate revenue. ASwealife data shows most members have frozen or canceled their ClassPass memberships and plan to support small businesses if they go back.

Consumers aren't always the best predictors of their own future behavior - but if they do what they think they're going to do, the fitness industry will have new leaders.
