"In our 30 year history, 24 Hour Fitness has been fortunate to support many great teams and athletes, said Carl Liebert, 24 Hour Fitness President and CEO. "We were there with USA Basketball in Beijing to celebrate their success in bringing home gold medals in 2008, and we are honored to continue this legacy as the teams prepare for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. We look forward to once again helping our national teams stay on top of their game and supporting their continued success. Go Team USA!"

Achieving fitness requires creativity

One of my favorite activities when speaking to a group people on fitness is what I call "creative lifting." Very simply, it involves bringing a 5-pound dumbbell to the front of the room and asking each participant to lift the weight differently than the person before them.
Needless to say, by the time the 10th person has volunteered, the movements are a sight to behold, even though there are hundreds of ways to move dumbbells "through space." The best part of this drill is that it makes people think outside the proverbial box.
My main reason for encouraging individuals to participate in this exercise is to take some of the perceived complexity out of weight training and help people develop confidence at the prospect of working out on their own.
While the power of marketing has been responsible for booming sales in at home exercise DVDs, I have always maintained that there is only a fixed number of ways a dumbbell held in the hand can move through space. Fortunately, moving that dumbbell in conjunction with other movements of the body or use of other limbs can add more than one muscle group and ultimately work the body more effectively.
The complexity of working the body not only through creative movement of dumbbells but also by forcing other parts of the body to resist that downward pull called gravity adds to the mix and significantly increases the choices in one's program.
The science of training, nutrition, creating muscle balance, symmetry and managing injury properly while learning proper techniques is always best left to the professional fitness trainer, though the simplicity of movements to achieve a phenomenal workout are many. The squat, for example, is a classic weight-resistance movement and typified in functional daily activities by sitting down and standing up from a chair. Yet it can also be turned into a demanding workout. Anyone who is uncertain of what this movement does for the body need only to perform how many times they can stand up and sit down in one minute. Try this some time to increase both your cardiovascular efficiency and leg strength. If your knees are in pain, sit on a couple phone books or firm pillows so your knee angles are less extreme.
Your fitness program is not limited to squats only. A few things to remember in your "creative quest" are the following:
Weight is weight: Whether it's a can of soup, or a cinder block, weight is a unit of measure only. If you can find a safe way to hold it, and can weigh it in advance, use it. I had one client who would fill an iron cooking pot with stones for some of her lifts from the ground to build her legs.
Harness gravity: Some of the greatest muscular improvements and growth can be harnessed from fighting the force of gravity only. Just look at the body of a gymnast to appreciate the muscular effect of resisting this force.

CKO Kickboxing Health Fitness Franchise Continues Rapid Growth with New Seattle Gym Opening on July 1

SEATTLE, June 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- CKO Kickboxing, one of the fastest-growing health fitness franchises, will open its first cardio kickboxing gym on 15901 Westminster Way in Shoreline on Saturday, July 7. The high-quality, cross-training gym provides a family-friendly setting to Seattle residents and northern suburban Seattle residents who are looking for an alternative to Pilates, yoga, martial arts, cross-fit and spinning classes.
Grand Opening festivities are in the works for July 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to CKO Kickboxing of Seattle owner Garett Renon.
Plans include a live DJ and a big party atmosphere with food. There'll be tons of giveaways including boxing gloves and equipment, personal training sessions, and discounts on memberships.
CKO Kickboxing, whose franchisees include many former military members, is offering a 10 percent discount to current and former service personnel as well as police and fire personnel. Students and teachers also receive a 10-percent discount.
"I was a mechanical engineer working for the Department of Defense for 7 years. I hated just about every minute of it. But I've always had a passion for fitness. I am a triathlete, soccer player, snowboarder and student of Martial Arts. I remember back when I was 7 years old my parents enrolled me into a Taekwondo school. We finished every class by doing push-ups and sit-ups. I continued the routine every day for years and I have never really stopped working out since," said Renon, age 30.
When his wife, who is in the Navy, was transferred to Seattle recently, he got the chance to change his life.
"I decided to follow my passion of fitness," he said. "I hated the 9-5 office lifestyle. I can't wait to just get in there and start changing people's lives and help them lose weight."
He had his choice of fitness franchises to invest in.
"The difference in attitude from the big-box health fitness franchises and CKO Kickboxing was like night and day. The people at CKO Kickboxing felt more caring. They were very welcoming and very friendly. It was like a family. They want you to succeed. At the other franchises I looked at I felt like I was a number," he said. "Not only do I love the family atmosphere at CKO I also believe in the workout 100%! Over the last 5 years I have been a personal trainer and a group fitness instructor at multiple gyms including the Military FIP program. The CKO workout is the best total body workout I have ever done. It is the best workout I have seen to help people lose weight, build muscle, and improve motor skills. The best part is you can achieve these results in as little as 1 hour a day, 3-4 times a week."
"I am in Seattle following my dream. I can't wait for the gym to open and offer cardio boxing classes in Seattle," he said.

Fitness evaluation ordered for defendant in stabbing

Judge Tom Tedeschi ordered a fitness evaluation for Jacob C. Reed, 18, of West Frankfort during his preliminary hearing Thursday afternoon in Franklin County court.
Reeds attorney, Terry M. Green, petitioned the court for the fitness evaluation after the court found a bona fide doubt exists as to his mental state.
Documents filed state that Reed is being held in an isolation cell of the Franklin County Jail Facility because authorities believe he poses a danger to himself or other inmates.
Green filed the motion on June 20, 10 days after the defendant allegedly battered, stabbed and cut a victim with a knife. The two counts of aggravated battery and stabbing are a Class 3 felony.
In Greens motion, the defense attorney states that Reed has repeatedly been seen by counselors of The H Group to gauge his mental status and safety risk while the defendant is incarcerated.
Reed has a history of psychotropic treatment and is taking prescribed medication for schizophrenia. He made statements at the time of the offense that he hears voices.
Reed remains in jail on $10,000 bond and is ordered to have no contact with the victim in the case.
A fitness status hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. Aug. 9.

Fitness after 40

Fitness expert and author of Real Life Fitness Carey Long launched his first national advertising campaign in the form of a 30-minute infomercial which began airing in March on ABC and Fox. The spot promotes his fitness program for men and women over 40, encouraging them to take control of their fitness destiny so they may live longer and enjoy a better quality of life.
If you are new to fitness plans, there are lots of them out there - but keep in mind that most of them are geared towards the younger generation, he said. P 90x, Insanity, etc. are great programs, but they are extreme and not for beginners.
Long, a licensed physical therapy assistant (LPTA) and certified personal trainer with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA-CPT), has worked in the fitness industry for more than 20 years. He is currently the PT Director for Spectrums at Southdowns in Baton Rouge.
Early in his career, he focused on a younger demographic - those wanting beach bodies and big muscles. Following the death of his parents, he made a personal and professional shift from focusing on outside appearances to increasing life expectancy.
My mother died at 61, and my father died at 64, from heart complications he said. My main goal was to live past age 64, and that became the focus of my book Real Life Fitness.
Long altered his exercise routine and diet which reshaped his body. He lost 40 lbs., going from a big bodybuilder's physique to one resembling a lean Olympic swimmer.
It's not about being ripped. It's about being fit, healthy and finding the balance between including exercise into your daily routine, eating healthier and accepting some responsibility for your future life.
Once a common thought that after 40 it was too late to get in shape, he said, but science has proven otherwise.
In fact, numerous studies have shown that older people respond very favorably to both strength training and aerobic exercise. Most fitness experts agree that a 15-20 year decrease in biological age can be achieved with simple lifestyle changes. There can be a huge difference between biological age and chronological age.
Long said don't put limits on yourself just because you're over 40. He said your fitness program should be based more on your goals and fitness level than how old you are.

We want to re-invest within our community, and put money back into the wellness of the community. We also have a travel group, where we travel to different locations within the community to show people and members that there are areas that you can utilize for fitness purposes as well, like the Tridge, Emerson Park, the high schools, Overlook Park and the soccer fields. So were going to take people to those areas and show them how to work out, and kind of run them through some drills and stuff so maybe that way they can utilize them on their own, said Hale.
This is my first location. We are looking to expand. Were working on a Reaction Athletics possibility in Freeland, with an indoor football field area, said Hale
Were really looking forward to kind of expanding the world of fitness and wellness. We really want to incorporate nutrition, fitness, and wellness into one big ball of fun, said Hale. For certain memberships, Reaction Fitness offers a two-hour nutrition and fitness consultation.
