Valencell Mobile Fitness Sensor Technology Reaches Milestones in Clinical Validation Studies

RALEIGH, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Valencell, an innovator in mobile fitness technology that integrates into audio headsets and earbuds, today announced that its licensable fitness sensor technology has reached a key milestone, achieving unprecedented validation by an independent study recently presented at this years American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) annual conference and validation testing supported by a National Institute of Health (NIH) Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program.

Building on this strong industry validation, the company is rebranding its sensor technology as PerformTekTM (previously it was referred to as V-LINC) to better reflect the combination of Valencells cutting edge sensors and biometric firmware technology and its role in optimizing athletic performance training and coaching.

At the annual ACSM conference, Meir Magal, Ph.D., FACSM, an Associate Professor of Exercise Science at North Carolina Wesleyan College (NCWC), presented the findings of his independent study, which further validated the accuracy of Valencell's technology. The study, confirmed that Valencell earbud sensors were a valid and reliable instrument for continuous measurement of heart rate during exercise. The sensors were strongly correlated to the heart rate measure obtained from a twelve lead electrocardiogram and resulted in similar reliability on a day-to-day basis. The study data was collected at the Human Performance Laboratory on the campus of NCWC.

Additionally, with ongoing research supported by an NIH Phase II SBIR program, Valencell has demonstrated that its technology can accurately assess an individuals resting metabolic rate (RMR), which can account for approximately 60 percent of ones daily energy expenditure. The clinical trials will be completed at the beginning of next year with the support of the Duke Center for Living. This technology, which also tracks calories burned during exercise, provides individuals with precise insight into the number of calories burned a day (when active and resting).

Both studies reflect milestones for Valencell, and the mobile fitness industry as a whole. The Magal study represents the first time a noninvasive earbud-based heart rate sensor has been clinically shown to continuously and accurately track heart rate during exercise, stated CEO and co-founder Dr. Steven LeBoeuf. Furthermore, preliminary findings from our NIH-supported study have shown that our technology has the potential to overcome one of the industrys most difficult challenges determining a persons resting metabolic rate without the need for expensive equipment and multiple hours of a persons time.

Valencell provides a licensing package that includes a PerformTekTM sensor design (for both Apple iOS and Android platforms) along with a digital signal processor(DSP)chip loaded with its biometric firmware. Licensees have access to an online community through Valencells application programming interface (API) along with iOS and Android software development kits (SDK).

Fitness Industry Council of Canada Hosts Fitness Day on the Hill in Support of Caloric Menu Legislation

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire -06/12/12)- Fitness Industry Council of Canada ("FIC") today hosted Fitness Day on the Hill to advocate for Canada's first legislation that would require restaurants to post calorie and other nutritional information in menus and on menu boards.

FIC has launched MenuTruth.ca, a website designed to garner support for its new initiative that requires restaurants to post calorie information and allow Canadians to make healthier food selections while dining out. Menu Truth is intended to influence the eating habits of Canadians by educating them on the nutritional value of the food that they are consuming; and in turn, affect the decisions of enough people to create a public health benefit.

Following on similar legislation in the Unites States, FIC would like to see federal legislation in Canada that would require restaurants of 10 or more locations to be transparent in the nutritional content of the food they provide. This legislation is based on a report created by the Centre for Science in the Public Interest, titled "Writings on the Wall."

FIC also used the opportunity to reiterate the importance of the Government's campaign promise to extend the Children's Fitness Tax Credit to adults and double the existing Children's Tax Credit to $1,000 once the budget is balanced in fiscal 2015.

The Adult Fitness Tax Credit would reward Canadians for leading active and productive lives by providing a $500 tax credit toward fees such as gym memberships or other organized sporting activities.

According to a report conducted by the Center for Spatial Economics titled "Economic Benefits of an Adult Tax Credit," it was found that the federal government would save $2.5 billion over the next 21 years by extending the benefits of the current Children's Fitness Tax Credit program to adults and will encourage nearly one million more Canadians to get active and healthier.

One of the main goals of Fitness Day on the Hill is to ensure that the tax credit remains at the forefront of the government's legislative agenda.

Canadians are encouraged to support new caloric legislation by visiting MenuTruth.ca, which will allow them to directly send ePostcards to their given province's Premier, Minister of Health, Federal Minister of Health, and the Prime Minister.

"Physical activity and eating right are essential habits to ensure healthy lifestyles. With the Adult Fitness Tax Credit and MenuTruth.ca, Canadians have the opportunity to achieve both" stated Dave Hardy, President of FIC.

Fitness playlist flow to the beats per minutes

NEW YORK: When fitness instructor Shirley Archer plays Annie Lennoxs song 17 Again for her indoor cycling class, she urges students to connect with the vitality of their inner 17-year-old legs. When she teaches yoga she rolls out the harp solos.

Experts say exercising to the proper music can boost your mood, kick your workout up a notch and channel the energy of a younger you.

Fitness playlists are extremely important, said Archer, who is also a spokeswoman for the American Council on Exercise. A number of studies show that music can impact mood, emotions, energy levels, even breathing and heart rates.

Archer, author of 12 books on fitness and wellness, including Fitness 9 to 5, said the research comes from music therapy, sports, surgical recovery and gait training studies for people with neurodegenerative issues.

Music is powerful because it stimulates different neural pathways in the brain and taps powerfully into our emotions and our memories, said Archer, who lives in Singer Island, Florida, and Zurich, Switzerland.

Not only can music help people power through workouts, she said, it can distract them from boredom, fatigue and discomfort.

Think about how people who are middle-aged or older find their dancing feet when they hear tunes that were popular when they were in their teens or early 20s, she said.

Also a powerful tool for relaxation, music can help to slow and calm heart and breathing rates, reduce stress and evoke feelings of peace and balance.

A good fitness playlist will match the workout objectives, Archer said. An aerobic workout should start out with uplifting music at a tempo of about 130 beats per minute and build to around 150 BPM.

Studies show that this is a moderate aerobic pace for most people, she said. Think of the tunes Stayin Alive, 9 to 5 or Justin Timberlakes Rock Your Body.
