Fitness Together – The ‘Neiman Marcus’ of fitness

(From left to right) Scott Baumann, co-owner/trainer, Denise Rodriguez, Linda Dann, TJ Sabalka, trainer, and Elisa Seda, trainer.

At Fitness Together, you wont see photographs of the facilitys trainers or celebrities on the walls.

Too old? Too many injuries? I am 72 with 2 total knee replacements, 2 carpal tunnel surgeries, 1 hernia repair, plus overweight. Fitness Together knows my weak spots and adapt. They keep me safe and active. I have much more energy than I had before starting with FT, said client Linda Dann.

Its not about me or my trainers; its about our clients and the results we have helped them accomplish, said co-owner and manager Scott Baumann, who opened Fitness Together seven years ago with partner and Miami native, Eddie Rodriguez.

Our goal is not to train celebrities, but to make each and every one of our clients feel like a celebrity. This is an elite facility where the average mom or businessman can train privately with their own personal trainer to achieve their fitness goals and have a great time doing it.

One of the most unique features about Fitness Together is that members work out under the direction of their own personal trainer in a fully equipped, private room. There are no crowds, no waiting for equipment and no need to feel embarrassed about just starting out.

Not everyone feels comfortable working out in a crowded, big box gym where theres a lot of chit chat, younger people and a social scene, said Rodriguez. Our clients want results, and they want an experienced and friendly trainer to help them.

At Fitness Together, Rodriguez and Baumann take pride in offering members the Neiman Marcus experience.

Its just like fashion, you can shop at TJ Maxx or you can shop at Neiman Marcus. We are the Neiman Marcus.

We hand our clients their water, get their towels and provide fresh fruit, said Baumann. I know each and every client by their first name. We even celebrate birthdays, as we cultivate a very family environment. Its important that we take time to show our members how valuable they are to us, and thats why they tend to stick around.

Fitness First trims business fat

THE world's largest gym operator Fitness First has today announced more than a quarter of its Australian gyms will be culled, in a revamp of the health club operator's struggling business.

Fitness First Australia today announced that it is looking to sell 24 of its 97 Australian clubs as a component of the restructure of its parent company in the UK.

"With a change in ownership of our company comes the opportunity for a full review of the portfolio of Fitness First clubs in Australia," said Pete Manuel, Fitness First Australia's managing director.

"We have identified 24 clubs that do not fit our vision for the brand and these clubs are being put on the market for sale. All operators review their portfolios from time to time and this is overdue for Fitness First here in Australia."

Fitness First Australia has engaged 333 Capital to help find buyers for the 24 clubs which may be sold altogether or individually. A condition of sale will be that all member and staff rights are preserved.

Once the restructure is complete Fitness First will have the strongest balance sheet in the industry and our members will quickly start to see improvements in existing clubs and new clubs opening,'' said Manuel.

Fitness First will open its next gym at City Square in Perth Western Australia on the 21st of June having opened four clubs over the last six months.

Clubs that are facing closure include Five Dock, Lane Cove and Pennant Hills in Sydney and Malvern East, Highpoint and Nunawading in Melbourne.

Fitness First is the largest global health club and gym operator with over a million members in over 400 clubs worldwide. Fitness First was founded in the UK in1993 and opened its first club in Australia in 2000.

Fitness First plans CVA for 81 clubs with 750 jobs put in the balance

Troubled gym chain Fitness First has told creditors it intends to offload 81 clubs in a company voluntary arrangement that leaves up to 750 jobs in the balance.

The CVA, first revealed by The Daily Telegraph , will help the company avoid going into administration by giving up onerous leases it can no longer afford.

Founded in Bournemouth in 1993, Fitness First (OTC BB: FSTC.OB - news) has about 150 gyms in the UK and is struggling to keep up rental payments after a drop in membership revenues.

CVAs have been controversial in the past because they leave landlords out of pocket. However, in the case of Fitness First, the company has offered landlords a claw-back on future profits if they agree to sign up to the deal.

Richard Fleming, who heads restructuring at KPMG and is supervising the CVA, said landlords could recover between 23p and 28p in the 1, compared to less than 5p in the 1 if the business went into administration.

Last week, unsecured creditors including landlords and suppliers were handed just 3p in the 1 after the collapse of video games retailer Game.

British Property Federation chief executive Liz Peace said: Fitness First is clearly a business in some distress that requires restructuring, and landlords will consider the CVA offer on a business-by-business and a site-by-site basis.

However, it is extremely welcome to see a 'claw-back arrangement included in this CVA and we hope that this further establishes a precedent that the use of these provisions should be included as a matter of course in future CVAs.

The vote on the CVA is set for June 20, with clubs facing either closure, a sale or the possibility of being run by Fitness First on behalf of the landlords.

Mr Fleming added: The CVA is part of a wider restructuring of the company, involving the transfer of the equity to the debt holders and the injection of a new 100m loan facility from the lenders. The wider financial restructuring is dependent on the approval of the CVA by the creditors.

Tour Report: Golf Fitness: The downswing

By Sean Cochran, Golf Fitness

The downswing is the phase within the swing where the generation of force is created in the lower body and then transitioned up through the body into the impact position. In order for maximum force generation to occur and transfer efficiently into the impact position it is imperative for the golfer to keep the sequencing of the swing intact.

A number of physical components are necessary in order for the sequencing of the swing in the downswing to occur efficiently. For example: Balance is a key component as weight shift is integral at this point in the swing; lower body strength is needed to initiate the downswing with the lower half; and core stability to maintain the golfers postural positions.

Golf fitness training can both develop and enhance these physical components of the downswing thus allowing for greater efficiency and execution. We could utilize Single Leg Address Positions Rotations to improve the golfers balance capacities, a Jefferson Squat to increase lower body strength, and Tubing Rotations for core stability.

EXERCISES

Single Leg Address Rotations (Improve Balance): Place the body in a proper address position, knees slightly bent, fixed spine angle, arms crossed over your chest. Raise the right foot slightly off the floor while maintaining your address position and fixed spine angle.

Begin to slowly rotate your shoulders to the right to the point of a complete shoulder turn. Return to the starting position of the exercise and repeat for 10-15 repetitions maintaining balance on the left foot. Repeat the exercise balancing on the left foot.

Jefferson Squat (Increase Lower Body Strength): Grasp a dumbbell with both hands in front the hips. Extend the arms straight, place the feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart, toes pointed outward at 45 degrees, and heels on the floor. Maintain an upright torso with the eyes looking forward, and arms extended straight.

Slowly lower the hips while keeping the torso upright by bending the knees. Continue to squat downward until the thighs are parallel to the floor. Pause for one second, return to the starting position of the exercise, and repeat for 8-15 repetitions. Click for image

Tubing Rotations (Develop Core Stability & Rotary Strength): Grasp handles of tubing slightly above the hips. Place feet slightly wider than shoulder width, knees bent, and torso upright. Step away from the tubing attachment 2 to 4 feet to create tension. Allow the handle to shift to the side of your body when stepping away from the tubing attachment.

Fitness centre to organise event in aid of foundation

CELEBRITY Fitness invites everyone to join their Fitness for Charity event on June 30 at Wangsa Walk Mall, Wangsa Maju that will benefit the National Kidney Foundation (NKF).

During the event, the fitness centre will also introduce three new programmes.

Proceeds from the event will be chanelled to NKF, a foundation that was set up in 1993 to help Malaysians suffering from kidney failure who cannot afford dialysis treatment.

Kidney disease has become one of the biggest killers in Malaysia. At Celebrity Fitness, our ambition is to help people be healthy and fit. Obesity and high cholesterol are contributing factors of kidney disease and as a fitness club, we are in an ideal position to help people avoid these contributing factors and to extend our assistance to those in need, said Celebrity Fitness Malaysia managing director Kwangho Choi.

The three new programmes to be introduced at the event are DNA Perrea, Element and Fast Fit which were choreographed in-house.

The DNA Perrea programme is a choreographed dance style incorporating raggaeton music with Spanish lyrics for a cardiovascular workout.

The Element is based on yoga routines for improved flexibility.

As for Fast Fit, it is a new school circuit-training programme designed to improve fitness levels, body posture and tone muscles. It is a combination of pilates and yoga techniques.

Participants who register for the Fitness for Charity event will be the first group to experience these new routines, alongside celebrities such as Amber Chia, Baki Zainal and others who will attend the event.

We are more than pleased to have Celebrity Fitness share the same goal as us in helping Malaysians with kidney diseases and at the same time, creating awareness about this affliction, said NKF board of directors member Chua Yoong Saeng.

Fitness First slims down as business struggles

THE world's largest gym operator Fitness First has today announced more than a quarter of its Australian gyms will be culled, in a revamp of the health club operator's struggling business.

Fitness First will sell 24 of its 97 clubs after a struggle this year to deal with $890 million of debt from its UK parent company.

Fitness First Australia is a division of the global company Fitness First Group, which has been hit by weak consumer spending and the rise of budget gyms in the UK and Australia.

The group has also been subject to sharp criticisms by members for its inflexible contracts and the difficulty of cancelling memberships.

Pete Manuel, Fitness First Australia's managing director said the company was hopeful the sale of clubs across the country would give it "significant financial firepower".

"With a change in ownership of our company comes the opportunity for a full review of the portfolio of Fitness First clubs in Australia," Mr Manuel said.

"We have identified 24 clubs that do not fit our vision for the brand and these clubs are being put on the market for sale. All operators review their portfolios from time to time and this is overdue for Fitness First here in Australia."

The company said a condition of sale will be that all member and staff rights were preserved.

Fitness First slims down to trim debt

STRUGGLING health club chain Fitness First has been forced to sell a quarter of its Australian gyms as part of a restructure to wipe $890 million of debt from its British parent company.

Fitness First Australia is a division of the global company Fitness First Group, which is undergoing a debt-for-equity swap with lenders Oaktree and Marathon.

The lenders have agreed to write off all the company's debt for an equity stake.

The company, which will also shed clubs in Britain, has been hit by weak consumer spending and the rise of budget gyms. It is believed the Australian arm brings in more than 50 per cent of profits, despite accounting for only 25 per cent of clubs.

In an announcement yesterday, the company said it was selling 24 of its 97 clubs across the country that were underperforming to help improve its balance sheet.

''We have identified 24 clubs that do not fit our vision for the brand and these clubs are being put on the market for sale,'' said Fitness First Australia's managing director, Pete Manuel.

Advisory firm 333 Capital, which is helping the company find buyers, estimated the combined value of the clubs at about $50 million.

''It is a very attractive, national footprint of 24 clubs, and we are very confident of selling,'' said managing director Chris Martin.

Fitness First puts 24 clubs up for sale

Gym chain Fitness First will sell a quarter of its Australian outlets as its debt-laden UK parent undergoes a major restructure of its global operations.

Fitness First Australia announced on Friday that it would sell 24 of its 97 clubs but said protection of member and staff rights would be a condition of the sales.

Company managing director Pete Manuel said the 24 clubs "do not fit our vision for the brand".

"All operators review their portfolios from time to time and this is overdue for Fitness First here in Australia," he said.

Founded in the UK in 1993, Fitness First has more than 400 clubs worldwide - mostly in the UK, Australia and Germany - but has struggled in the face of low-cost competition and tight economic conditions in recent years.

In 2011, former BC Partners, the private equity owners of the international Fitness First business, scrapped plans to float the business on the Singapore stock exchange.

In 2010, the Australian operations reported a fall in membership of 16,000 people - a drop of nearly five per cent.

A number of franchises, low-cost, 24-hour gym businesses have opened in Australia in the past five years, increasing the pressure on one-time market giant Fitness First.

Corporate advisers 333 Capital have been retained to find buyers for the Australian clubs.

FITNESS First will sell a quarter of its Australian outlets, including three of its five SA gyms, as its UK parent undergoes a major restructure.

Gyms at Holden Hill, Hindmarsh and Marion are all on the market, however members of these outlets will be given the option of remaining with the new owners or transferring their memberships to Fitness First outlets at Payneham or Adelaide.

Fitness First managing director Pete Manuel said the 24 clubs being sold across the country "do not fit our vision for the brand".

"All operators review their portfolios from time to time and this is overdue for Fitness First here in Australia," he said.

The company said protection of member and staff rights would be a condition of the sales.
