Focus on Fitness: A new face at the Plant City Family YMCA – Plant City Observer
Get to know Hannah Franklin, the Plant City Ys new Wellness Director.
Well hi there!
I am Hannah Franklin and I am so excited to join you here monthly. Not only will we focus on fitness, but also everything fitness encompasses and symbolizes.
I have been interconnected to fitness my entire life. My love for fitness started when I took my very first weightlifting class at a gym in Lakeland when I turned 12. I was ecstatic to be a part of something bigger than myself. Not only was everyone there for accountability, but also a desire of social interaction and camaraderie. My love for fitness only grew from there.
When I reached high school I joined the Cross Country and Track teams. I knew I wanted nothing to do with a sport that required hand-eye coordination, thus my running journey began. Little to my dismay, I realized you need to work out consistently to see results, much less compete. Who would have thought? My first year as a runner was a disaster. I had absolutely no clue how to fuel my body or how to train properly.
The summer after my first year of running, I began to train consistently and smarter. I began to eat foods I knew would fuel my body and stayed consistent with a training plan. Day by day, I was challenged as a runner to push past any mental barriers to increase my pace and distance. When I began my senior year of high school my coach encouraged me to take his weightlifting class, which made me stronger not only as an athlete but also as a person. I loved challenging my body to see what it could it do. At the same time, I loved helping others on their journey to reach their full potential.
I coached for three years until I transitioned later as a Y Personal Trainer, and now I proudly serve as a Wellness Director for the Plant City Family YMCA.
Weightlifting and running have led me to where I am today and have made me stronger both mentally and physically. The two biggest factors that kept me going through the toughest days were the support from my teammates and how incredible my body and mind felt after I completed a workout. Fitness has impacted my life in more ways than I can explain and I know it can do the same for you.
There are both physiological and physical benefits to working out regularly. Mayo Clinic recommends we get physical activity 30 minutes a day for three to five days a week minimum to help with the following:
Releasing feel-good endorphins
Increasing energy
Gaining confidence
Sleeping better at night
Lowering anxiety and stress
These recommendations serve as good reminders during the month of September, which is National Suicide Prevention Month. At some point in each of our lives, we or someone we know has dealt with anxiety, depression, fear, fatigue, stress or any other mental health issues varying in severity. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline phone number, if you or anyone you know needs it, is (800) 273-8255. Our lives are so precious and we can do so much with what we are given!
If you are not the workout kind of person, thats OK! Exercise doesnt have to be working out in a gym lifting weights or walking on a treadmill. Exercise can be anything that gets your muscles moving and your heart rate up. Find an activity you truly enjoy and use that as a starting point; It could be riding your bike, yard work, rock climbing, an obstacle course with your family, playing in the yard with your pet, the list goes on. Whatever you decide to do, do it. Start somewhere.
Youve got this.
Hannah Franklin is a Wellness Director at the Plant City Family YMCA.

The YMCA in Westover reopens its fitness center – WIVT – NewsChannel 34
BINGHAMTON, NY The YMCA of Broome County is welcoming back members to one of its 2 fitness facilities now that Governor Cuomo has allowed gyms to reopen.
The fitness rooms at the Ys West Family Branch in Westover opened on September 1st with all of the mandatory safety precautions in place.
Visitors encounter warning signs on their way in and must fill out questionnaires and have their membership cards scanned to support contact tracing efforts.
Everyone must wear masks, stay physically distanced and each person received their own spray bottle of sanitizer and towel for cleaning off equipment.
The YMCA also added additional staff to assist with cleaning, moved fitness classes into the gym for 10 feet of distancing between participants and installed special air filters and air purifiers.
Senior Director of Healthy Living Scott Tota says members are slowly returning to work out.He says many folks have especially missed the weight training.
Theyre just happy to be able to lift something up and be able to put it back down again, which they havent done for 6 months. So, thats another caution that were very vigilant of the fact that its been a little while since people have been in here. Lets make sure were keeping our eye on people and making sure that theyre not pushing themselves too hard after taking 6 months off, says Tota.
The pool had already opened under state guidance at the end of June and pool classes are limited to 20 participants.
And the locker rooms are restricted to those using the pool.
The fitness area at the downtown Binghamton branch remains closed to protect that locations child care programming and the 87 men living in the supportive housing program.
The Y is accepting new members.

Social distancing and fitness: options for working out this winter – WeAreGreenBay.com
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) During the summer months, staying fit can be as easy as lacing up some running shoes and hitting the trails, but as the weather gets colder, that can lose its appeal.
Typically in the summer were slow anyways, most fitness centers are with the weather being nicer and things like that, Aric Riedemann, Fitness & Sports Manager at the Salvation Army Green Bay Kroc Center said.
But since the weather started turning, Riedemann told Local 5 that the Kroc Center has already seen a return.
Weve seen a lot of people, in this short little week weve seen a lot of people coming back, he said.
To help folks feel better about returning, theyre taking extra precautions.
Our fitness attendants are cleaning equipment more thoroughly, Riedemann said. We have hand sanitizer stations throughout the facility, and then we have some of our cardio machines, we have them marked off so that theres six feet in between each one of those.
There are also options for those who arent ready to get back into the building.
We have virtual fitness, group fitness classes for people that might not feel comfortable coming back yet, Riedemann said.
Over at Fitnessology, Fitness Coach Taylor Weyer told Local 5 of the benefits of setting up an online training regime for those who arent ready to step back into the gym setting.
So you cant just cancel, like, oh Ill go for a walk tomorrow, if you have it scheduled with a coach its very motivating to keep that appointment, she explained.
Fitnessology is a smaller workout centerm where training is overseen by coaches.
We have had a pretty big return of all of our clientele here, Weyer said. Were just smaller so I feel like people feel more comfortable.
But even if youre not feeling ready to return to any type of gym setting, there are options as the weather worsens.
As a personal trainer, I encourage movement, so theres still options to do things such as virtual training at home, Weyer said.
If you plan on staying fit this winter by running outside, experts reccomend:

Low-cost fitness bands see a resurgence in interest amid the pandemic – TechCrunch
While wearable fitness devices saw an uptick in shipments in North America for Q2, the overall dollar amount of the market remained steady, according to new numbers out of Canalys. The discrepancy can be chalked up to a decline in the average selling price of the products.
Continuing an overall trend for 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has increased interest in wearable devices, as consumers look to both monitor their health and track step counts, as mass closings have made many more sedentary. Perhaps owing to large unemployment figures and a massive economic downturn, the decisions customers have been making are trending toward the more frugal end of the spectrum.
Americans invested heavily in sub-US$50 trackers during the pandemic to stay accountable for the greater amount of time spent at home, analyst Vincent Thielke said in a comment tied to the figures release.
The numbers buck larger ongoing wearable trends, which have found smartwatches starting to utterly dominate the conversation. Of course, results that can be tied directly to the pandemic ought not be viewed as indicators of broader, ongoing trends. They do, however, seem to open up a perhaps temporary opportunity to low-cost device makers. Amazon is striking while the iron is hot with the Halo band, and a number of companies that have had continued success in Asia could potentially find an opening in the market. Subscription services appear to be the key way forward for monetizing relatively low-cost devices.
Apple continues to dominate the category overall. Thats helped along by a bump in shipments for the Apple Watch Series 3. As a $200 alternative to Apples higher-end devices, the three-year-old smartwatch saw a 30% year-over-year growth.

Why fitness has shifted to focus on recovery as much as activity – Insider – INSIDER
The culture of fitness has traditionally been all about striving for more, pushing yourself harder, translating mental strength and resilience into physical.
But over the past few years, that's started to change.
Increasingly, athletes and amateur fitness fans are realizing just how important recovery is to making progress, that more isn't always better, and so the culture is starting to shift.
No longer is it considered admirable to push through when you're feeling mentally and physically exhausted in contrast, the goal is listening to your body and knowing when to rest.
Recovery is essential because exercise depletes your energy stores and fluids, and the body needs time to replenish these.
While fluids can generally be restocked quite quickly, studies show that it takes at least 24 hours for muscle glycogen (energy used by the muscles) to be replenished after working out consuming enough carbs and protein helps too.
It's only through recovering sufficiently that you're then able to train effectively when youareworking out.
"When training with frequency, intensity, or even to offset a sedentary lifestyle, attention to recovery is critical to achieve results and also ensure longevity," Rob Smyth, CEO and Founder of global gym UN1T, told Insider.
Rob Smyth, founder of UN1T. UN1T
There are both physiological and psychological benefits to getting ample rest around your training, and studies prove this.
You might think you're building muscle by pumping iron in the gym or guzzling down protein shakes and chicken breasts, but it's in fact when we're recovering (and specifically when we're asleep), that our bodies rebuild.
Exercise results in microscopic tears of the muscle fiber. The body needs time to repair, and that's how muscle and strength are built.
A 2011 study compared two groups of individuals on a calorie-controlled diet. Half slept 5.5 hours a night, the other half for 8.5.
The researchers found that those who'd slept for a shorter period of time lost 55% less fat and 60% more muscle mass by the end of the fortnight than the group who slept for longer.
Whether you're counting your steps or tracking the calories burned in your workouts, wearing an activity tracker has become the norm over the past decade.
However, the latest breed of wearable health tech focuses as much on recovery as movement. One example of this is the Whoop band.
Originally designed with athletes in mind (and worn by golfer Rory McIlroy and CrossFit athlete Brooke Wells, for example) but now used by regular fitness fans, its aim is to help wearers balance their recovery and their activity, prevent overtraining, be more efficient, and train smarter rather than harder.
A post shared by WHOOP (@whoop)Aug 20, 2020 at 7:12am PDT
The tracker measures three main pillars: sleep, "strain," and recovery. "Strain" is based on cardiovascular load and refers to the physical strain put on your body.
It's accumulated throughout the day in workouts, but also general movement. So activities like cleaning, commuting, and moving house would all build up your strain score.
Each morning users wake up to a recovery score which informs how much strain they should take on that day for peak performance, i.e. how hard they should push themselves in a workout (if at all).
While the Whoop measures calories burned over the course of the day, it unusually doesn't count steps.
"Whoop is designed to be a little bit different in that most wearables on the market are telling you, 'Go, go, go! Hit this step count, burn this amount of calories, hit this amount of exertion.' Whereas we're trying to shine more light on sleep and recovery," Whoop product expert Lainie Smith told Insider.
"We're really trying to emphasize that you can be stronger and you can be better if you take your recovery more seriously."
Whoop is by no means the only recovery tracker on the market Garmin's Fenix and Suunto's fitness watches also help users balance rest and exertion but it's one of the most popular, with fitness fans increasingly sharing their stats on social media.
Specifically, recovery trackers appeal to fitness professionals, who often need help to make sure they recover enough.
"I was working 14+ hour days, training hard for around 90 minutes a day, and I was starting to feel the onset of overtraining and under-recovery, so I wanted to start tracking my recovery and make sure that I was giving my body sufficient time to rest and recover," Pele Zachariah, Head Trainer at London gym Rowboats, told Insider of before he started tracking recovery.
Pele Zachariah wears the Whoop tracker to help him avoid over-training. Pel Zachariah
Zachariah's tough workout schedule certainly demands serious recovery: He works out six times a week, hitting four strength-focused sessions and two "engine-focused" sessions, which are more endurance-based.
"I also do some mixed modal work combining strength and endurance in the same session to really challenge myself!" he added.
Similarly, Laura Hoggins, trainer at Foundry Fitness and author of "Lift Yourself," was drawn to the idea because she was more interested in making sure her body was ready and primed to perform, than how many steps she'd taken or calories she'd burned.
A post shared by Laura Biceps (@laurabiceps)Jul 31, 2020 at 11:03am PDT
Hoggins describes her workout routine as "intense:" She cycles around 100 miles a week through her commute to work, does three strength sessions a week, two Olympic lifting workouts, one sprinting session, and one full rest day of "absolutely nothing."
"I decided to get a Whoop because I felt I was at the stage where I fully understood my activity levels, I didn't want to be doing more in fact, I'm seeking to be more efficient," she told Insider.
It's not just professional athletes and trainers who are increasingly concerned by their recovery though recreational exercisers are too, and they're seeing results.
Lucy Conlon, a London-based marketing professional and fitness micro-influencer, told Insider wearing a recovery tracker has helped her know how hard she can push herself.
Lucy Conlon works in marketing but is a keen lifter. Lucy Conlon
"Before, I took rest days very ad hoc and just around my schedule," she told Insider. "I now look at my recovery data before I decide to embark on a difficult workout or take a rest day."
While some may say recovery trackers take away the intuitive nature of listening to your body and how you feel, for numbers-driven people, measurable scores are appealing.
"The data and guidance for sleep, recovery, and training is invaluable," Olivia Tompkins, a nurse and CrossFitter, told Insider.
Olivia Tompkins is a nurse and Crossfitter. Olivia Tompkins
"It brought balance to my life and an understanding of how the conditions of your body change every day. It tells me what my body is ready for, how much strain I can take so no workout is wasted.
"Before I wouldn't respect my body, I would feel like I would need a rest or to lower the intensity of my training but I would just push on."
Acquiring a recovery tracker has helped Tompkins see how her sleep, nutrition, and lifestyle affects her body, and she adjusts her training accordingly, lowering her intensity when necessary.
"That's something I would never have done before, and as a result, my training has hugely benefited I've had no injuries since."
Forget rest day guilt the image of health and fitness is now all about balance and overall wellness, and the growing interest in recovery reflects the move towards mindfulness, slowing down, and looking after our mental health as much as our bodies.
"This focus on recovery is brought about by the fact that the general population is becoming more aware and educated on what health and fitness is," Smyth said.
"Gone are the days of trying to sweat as much as possible and burn over 1,000 calories each session (or they should be!).
"The goal is to methodically build your body and its systems, not break it."

UN1T caters to its users' desires to look after their bodies with a dedicated mobility and recovery area, and at boutique London spin studio Boom Cycle, a "Mindful Ride" class was launched this year, focusing on self-reflection and emotional wellbeing, rather than pushing your body to its limits.
"In the past few years there has been a huge shift in the mindset of people when it comes to their health and wellbeing, we're now just as focused on recovery as much as getting a great workout in," Boom Cycle founder Hilary Rowland told Insider.
Earlier this year, a new type of wellness space opened in central London called House of Wisdom rather than workout classes, it offers daily empowerment talks and workshops, meditation, yoga, and gong baths.
Luca Maggiora, House of Wisdom's co-founder, believes lockdown has only added to most people's desire to slow down.

"We have found that lockdown especially has given people the chance to reflect on their overall health and wellbeing, everyone has been given a chance to analyze every aspect of their daily lives, from stressful jobs to changing their workout regimes and dedicating more time to things that matter most, such as spending time with family and friends and looking after ourselves properly," he told Insider.
"We have found that people in general are now more open about discussing their mental health and wellbeing and therefore are now open to trying out alternative ways of working out their mind as well as their bodies."
Notworking out can often be the best thing for both your mind and body sometimes, less really is more.
