Around Town: JCC adjusts to pandemic by taking fitness equipment outdoors – Palo Alto Online
Fitness equipment from the Goldman Sports and Wellness Complex at the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center in Palo Alto is now set up outdoors. Courtesy Oshman Family JCC.
In the latest Around Town column, news about how the COVID-19 pandemic has led the Oshman Family JCC to readapt its fitness center, a local mosque to rethink an annual celebration and a five-star hotel to offer a "dream" giveaway.
COMMITTED TO FITNESS ... Restaurants aren't the only establishments that have brought their services outdoors during COVID-19. Gyms have recently joined the trend by bringing their exercise equipment out in the open, including the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center. Ellipticals, treadmills, rowing machines and other equipment from the center's Goldman Sports and Wellness Complex are set up outside and available for members' use. The JCC also has set up a strength-training area under a shade that includes weights and lifting stations. "We have offered outdoor workouts and classes before; however, the 'outdoor gym' we have set up this time we have not done anything like this before," Todd Milton, the complex's director, said in an Aug. 13 press release. JCC staff are following guidance from the state and Santa Clara County by keeping physical distance between members and maintaining cleaning practices throughout the south Palo Alto campus in response to the health crisis. Procedures also have been changed at the JCC's Bill Heller Outdoor Pool to comply with health guidelines. The center has plans to bring back group exercise sessions at Freidenrich Community Park followed by interval, zumba and cycling classes.
QUIET REFLECTION ... Religious groups have had to dramatically readapt their traditions since the coronavirus pandemic hit and the Dawoodi Bohras of San Jose is no exception. The group, which during regular times meets at its mosque in south Palo Alto, has adjusted its practices for 'Ashara Mubraka, which translates to Blessed 10, a 10-day period of reflection that began on Aug. 19 and kicks off the Islamic New Year. The changes are a dramatic departure from normal customs for the roughly 150-family congregation that practices Shia Islam and is mainly composed of members scattered across the south bay. What is usually a solemn gathering for the believers who remember the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, will instead take place at their respective homes. "It is a period of gaining education and spiritual reflection," said Zoaib Rangwala, who has been involved with the local Dawoodi Bohras group since its founding in 2000. For two hours and 15 minutes each day, they will watch recorded sermons by the current leader of the community, Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, and the past two leaders. During normal times, the congregation would have gathered for sermons and two meals cooked by members of the mosque daily over the 10-day period; the congregation fasts on Ashura, the 10th day, from sunrise to sunset. This year, some members of the local community will prepare the food ahead of time at the mosque's commercial kitchen, then distribute the meals to around a dozen pickup sites between San Francisco and Gilroy. The group also has offered a helping hand to the community during the pandemic in recent months, including donating roughly 200 hand-sewn face masks to East Palo Alto residents and seniors at the Palo Alto Gardens apartment complex and delivering a pizza lunch to Palo Alto police officers.

A HERO'S REWARD ... The Four Seasons Hotel Silicon Valley plans to pull out all the stops for one special essential worker through a "dream celebration." The East Palo Alto hotel is accepting nominations for a community hero who will be treated to a special event, such as a milestone birthday, wedding, graduation party or other occasion, worth $50,000 with the help of its staff and partner companies. "We are empowering people to nominate (or self-nominate) a community hero who we could provide a fully specialized intimate event," General Manager Florian Riedel said in a statement. "It could be your friend who has been delivering food to elderly; a neighbor who spearheaded home schooling for local kids; a first responder; or someone you know who is making (a) positive impact and who has put themselves above others during this difficult time." The event will take place before Dec. 31, 2021, on a date agreed on by the hotel and the winner, pending local health orders. Along with the venue, the winner also will receive a customized menu by Executive Chef Martn Morelli, entertainment, flowers and photography and videography services. Submissions will be accepted through Sept. 15 at woobox.com/2strop.

O2 Fitness undecided about planned Saturday reopening – Greater Wilmington Business Journal
As of late afternoon Friday, O2 Fitness officials were still uncertain whether they would proceed with plans to reopen their facilities in North Carolina on Saturday. Those plans faced headwinds from the N.C. Dept. of Health and Human Services that blew in earlier Friday.
The gym chain, which has four locations in Wilmington in addition to others in the Triangle and the Triad, closed all its facilities in March. Early Friday, it announced that its North Carolina gym clubs would reopen Saturday; after hearing from NCDHHS later in the day, officials were unsure whether to proceed on that path. But its Facebook posts still reflected plans to make its indoor facilities available to members.
Fitness facilities may offer outdoor classes and outdoor exercise equipment during Phase 2 restrictions as long as they comply with the outdoor mass gathering limit of 25 people, said NCDHHS spokeswoman Catie Armstrong in an email Friday afternoon. O2 Fitness has been conducting outdoor and live-streamed activities.
Indoor activity, however, is a different story, Armstrong said.
"Fitness facilities, gyms and exercise facilities in North Carolina are permitted to operate indoors for those who have a prescription from a medical professional or health care provider," she wrote. "To the extent that indoor or outdoor areas in gyms, exercise facilities, or fitness facilities are utilized for the limited purpose of serving those with a medical condition, they must follow the NCDHHS Interim Guidance for Fitness Center and Gym Settings."So, despite the measures for mask-wearing, sanitizing and maintaining physical and social distancing the fitness chain stated it was taking to protect members and staff, those measures apparently did not satisfy the state agency, since O2 Fitness did not indicate it was limiting its clientele to those members with medical conditions requiring exercise.O2 Fitness officials noted that some other gyms in the area reopened earlier this summer through the technicality mentioned by Armstrong. That exception -- serving members with a medical condition for which exercise is prescribed -- was outlined in a June 5 letter from N.C. Attorney General Josh Stein. Information on the state's easing of various Phase 2 restrictions, including those for gyms, can be found here.Although the letter said that individuals exercising because of medical directives must provide documentation from a medical professional, gym owners are citing the Americans with Disabilities Act and other privacy legislation as reasons that individuals need not provide such documentation.O2 Fitness facilities are located in Hanover Center, Mayfaire, on Racine Drive and in the Porters Neck area.

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Gyms and fitness centers across the state of Indiana began re-opening in May, and one spot in Michiana is giving people the chance to take their morning workouts outdoors.
Pure Core Health and Fitness in Mishawaka opened its doors in November; the fitness center was opened for five months before it had to shut down due to COVID-19. The facility offers group fitness classes, wellness consulting, and personal training.
Since re-opening its doors, Pure Core Health and Fitness has offered weekly summer fitness classes. The classes run from Tuesdays to Fridays for one hour.
People come together for one goal; to stay active and healthy during the coronavirus pandemic.
Usually, classed would be held indoors, but, because of good weather, owners Greg and Sooka Mackey decided to move the fitness workouts out in the parking lot. Outdoor classes give people plenty of space to social distance.

Watch Olympic Runners Nick Symmonds and Ryan Hall Take the Marine Corps Fitness Test – Men’s Health
The U.S. Marine Corps physical fitness test is a popular challenge that has been undertaken by athletes like pro climber Magnus Midtb, powerlifter Xavier Barkley, and bodybuilder Andy Perez. In his latest YouTube video, former Olympic medalist Nick Symmonds attempted the test, and was joined by a fellow runner and Olympian, Ryan Hall.
Hall made history in 2011 as the only American to complete the Boston Marathon in under 2 hours 5 minutes, but more recently has been on a body transformation journey, having taken up weightlifting; he's now ripped and can pull 455 pounds in the deadlift.
The Marine Corps PFT has three components: strict pullups to failure, 2 minutes of crunches, and a 3-mile run.

They start with the pullups, and Hall goes first. A minimum of 5 reps is required, while 23 would constitute a perfect score. Hall maxes out at a respectable 20 reps (96 points), after needing to rest in a dead hang towards the end of his set. "I feel like my head's going to explode," he says immediately afterwards. Symmonds manages 19 reps (92 points).
Next up are the crunches, where a perfect score would be 110 reps in the 2 minute window. A passing score would be 70. Hall is on pace for a perfect score in the first minute, but then he begins to tire, and only makes it to 93 reps in his time. Symmonds, meanwhile, barely scrapes onto the board with 70 reps. "I'm so weak!" He screams after his set. "That's so bad."

The final round is the 3-mile run, which should be easy for two professional runners, right? Symmonds hits the finish line first, with Hall right behind him, at 18 minutes 25 seconds. This earns them both 97 points, and means Hall wins the challenge overall, with 268 points to Symmonds' 230.
"It hurts so bad," says Symmonds. "What a mistake."

64-year-old continues her life-changing fitness journey – Your News Now
One womans weight loss journey started with a wake-up call, and hasnt ended yet.
Need a bit of inspiration on your journey to a healthier life? 64-year-old Gloria Kershner from Lima started working toward her weight loss back in 2011. With ups and downs in between, she reached her goal weight last year and continues to keep up with her healthy lifestyle.
Kershner once weighed nearly 350 pounds and found herself not being able to carry out regular daily activities. Now, shes happy to do even some of the more strenuous tasks.
Even things like, I find joy in shoveling snow because before I would have to take rest breaks just doing my sidewalk and the driveway, says Kershner.
She didnt get here overnight. When she started making changes to her diet and exercising regularly, she lost 80 pounds in the first year. She was introduced to a non-profit called TOPS that stands for "take off pounds sensibly", and found community within the group.
The following years, Kershner admits she began to take her health for granted and gained back the majority of weight she had lost.
It wasnt until 2018 when she decided to make permanent lifestyle changes after beating breast cancer.
The next year I retired and it was just time to recommit to getting healthy and losing weight," says Kershner. "I went back to the (TOPS) Bluffton chapter and it took a year and a half to get the weight off, the last 140 pounds since I had gained back 60 of the 80.
Her friends at TOPS, along with people she works out alongside at the Senior Citizens Services gym kept her motivated to reach that goal. She continues to practice what some might consider a strict diet, and works out regularly.
She even has a binder filled with years worth of past fitness plans that she continues to add to.
Ali Rayman, the wellness coordinator at Senior Citizens Services says, As we are advancing her program, its hard! Shes getting to that point where her program is getting very difficult which is great. Shes excited about it, shes very dedicated.
Kershner admits that not every day is easy, and some days its hard getting motivated to come to the gym. But she pulls through and feels rewarded by the end.
