Weve all been there. We start up a new fitness routine and we start it hard. We commit to five days a week, no matter what and, when we exercise, we do it hard. The first week we are pretty sore, but we suck it up and press on.
Week two comes up, and although we are still sore, we press on by going farther and working harder. By week three, if weve made it that far, we are starting to see the results of our hard work, but our performance is slacking and we seem to be perpetually sore, and the work gets harder to do.
At this point, we may slow down a bit. We might choose to take the week off. Eventually, one week off becomes two weeks off, and then three, at which point our committed fitness routine becomes a shameful memory.
The key to any effective fitness routine is consistency. The fundamental basis to fitness consistency is pushing far enough to challenge the body but not so far as to punish it. A proper balance between work and recovery must be made.
There are four stages in muscle recovery all of which can be aided with the addition of massage therapy.
Stage 1: Delivery of nourishment To repair damaged tissue, nourishment and supplies need to be delivered to the area so the recovery process can begin. In a massage, as the muscle tissue is kneaded and stretched, more nutrients and supplies are allowed to be transported to the damaged tissue.
Stage 2: Waste removal To keep waste from building up and leading to swelling or further damage, the next stage involves the process of removing waste. The lymphatic system is responsible for removing waste, but its a passive system that relies on movement of the body to circulate. Numerous studies have shown massage can exponentially increase the rate of flow through the lymphatic system, thereby speeding up the removal of waste and decreasing inflammation.
Stage 3: Tissue regeneration During this stage of recovery, myokines are produced and released into your body. Myokines are the proteins in the body that drive tissue regeneration. The muscle activation and stimulation obtained from a therapeutic massage provides the mechanical stress required to produce myokines so your damaged tissue can be repaired.
Stage 4: Remodeling of repaired tissue After tissue has been repaired, it then needs to be remodeled. When new tissue is formed, it creates a random pattern that makes it hard for the tissue to slide smoothly past one another. The tissue needs to be rearranged in straight lines so it can function properly. Certain massage techniques like myofascial release and longitudinal stretching allow the repaired muscle tissue to optimally remodel. Failure to optimally remodel the repaired muscle tissue can lead directly to dysfunctional movement.
Whether you are starting into a new fitness journey or fine tuning and ramping-up a regimen youve already been following, be sure to allow enough quality time for recovery. Furthermore, make that recovery time count by adding regularly scheduled therapeutic massage to your routine.

Don’t give up fitness in your effort to stay healthy – Wadena Pioneer Journal
As the coronavirus moved into the area and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz began declaring closures of businesses in an effort to slow the virus spread, gyms like the Maslowski Wellness and Research Center in Wadena were forced to close. This meant a site where thousands of people visited each month was now off limits. This place where people gathered to stay fit, socialize and heal was locked.
One business person who relied heavily on having the Mas open was local personal trainer Nicole Pomerenke. After going through her own transformation, she's been helping others live a healthier life through nutrition and fitness offerings at the gym. But no gym, meant no work, at least until she could navigate through the many unknowns.
Nicole Pomerenke has been operating her fitness business out of a new location on Ash Avenue in Wadena in the former Wadena Chamber of Commerce building.Michael Johnson/Pioneer Journal
Since July 1, Pomerenke has been seeing clients out of a new space in the former Wadena Chamber of Commerce office on Ash Avenue in Wadena. She says the spot is perfect for exposure and just right to work with clients individually.
"This really got pushed because the gym was shut down," Pomerenke said.
She used to work out of the Mas either one-on-one or in various group classes. She said she would restart that again in August. Even so, she plans to maintain her own site in order to avoid the unknowns that can come along if the wellness center must close down again. Once returning to the wellness center she plans to continue strength training, water aerobics and equipment orientation.
During the first weeks of COVID-19, Pomerenke said she started developing video training, and writing more programs for her clients, but she was missing the connections with people. The personal trainer in her knew she needed to be right there supporting her clients to get them to achieve their goals. She even missed the small talk and staying up-to-date with everyone.
"I really feel more connected to people working with them one-on-one," Pomerenke said. "You can only do so much cheering via typing or something like that."
Another factor in her going out into her own space was her clients safety. Many are older or have preexisting conditions. The thought of going to a gym with many other people is not a choice some of them will make. In her new site, she is able to work one-on-one with clients using her fitness equipment or simply performing various body weight exercises.
"I'm hoping to really connect with people that want the privacy of being able to workout and get in the strength training, and the guidance, motivation, and further their activities and their goals," she said.
One such client is Ron Horn, who has been working with Pomerenke for about two years. He said he's lost 60 pounds since his start of training with Nicole.
"She's a very good trainer," Horn said. "If you have any questions she's very good about explaining things."
Pomerenke is tapping into a portion of the population that lacks the confidence of working out at a gym in front of many others or those who simply want to avoid large crowds. This private setting allows her to help them reach goals with only her helpful assistance at their side.
"I know how it feels to not want to go there," Pomerenke said, recalling a time when she was overweight and not feeling confident about going to any gym.
As much as she looks forward to the return of gyms full of people, she's now better prepared to stay in business during those times when a big sweaty group of people confined inside a building just isn't an option.

Why This Peloton Analyst Says An Apple Fitness Subscription Poses Little Threat – Benzinga
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) is reportedly planning to launch abundled servicefor subscription by October that includes a fitness app subscription for the higher end.
Although Apples fitness app would compete with Peloton Interactive Incs (NASDAQ: PTON) digital-only subscription offer, it may have a limited impact on the companys connected fitness base, according to BofA Securities.
The Peloton Analyst: Justin Post maintained a Buy rating onPeloton Interactive with an unchanged $72 price target.
The Peloton Thesis: Apples new fitness app will be available on the companys devices, like the iPhone, iPadand Apple TV, while Pelotons offerings are solutions for bikes and treadmills, Post said in a Friday note. (See his track record here.)
Pelotons digital-only subscription revenue represented only 1% of total revenue in the third quarter, he said, adding that the biggest value indigital subscribers for the company is their potential conversion to connected fitness subscribers.
"Longer-term, it is unclear whether Apple would partner with other at-home fitness hardware companies, or create its own proprietary bike/tread, though we think former is more likely than the latter."
Peloton's bikedelivery wait times suggest a robust order backlog, while BofAs app download data indicates that guided workout app downloads grew 220% year-on-year in July and areup 6% sequentially.
PTON Price Action: Peloton shares were down 0.59% at $65.32 at last check Friday.

Fitness Studios in Charlotte Adapt to Phase 2 with No Other Options – qcnerve.com
With continued extensions to Phase 2 of North Carolinas reopening plan, gyms and fitness studios in Charlotte have taken different approaches to save their businesses, from moving classes outside in the summer heat to taking advantages of loopholes that allow people to work out inside with permission from their doctor.
Lindsay Bushnell and staff at her Burn Boot Camp locations in SouthPark and Elizabeth pushed members through online workouts for eight weeks. When North Carolina moved into Phase 2 of reopening, they hosted outdoor classes at local churches. But it wasnt the same.
A few weeks prior to Gov. Roy Coopers announcement delaying Phase 3 until Sept. 11, Burn Boot Camp found another way to make things work for its members in Charlotte: the fitness studio holds indoor classes for members who could present a doctors note prescribing exercise.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Interim Guidance for Fitness Center and Gym Settings with Limited Operations states that gyms and fitness centers may reopen indoor areas to serve those prescribed or directed to exercise by a doctor or healthcare professional, inspiring some in Charlotte to head to their primary care physician for permission to get a workout in.
Bushnell said the note can prescribe exercise for physical or mental health, and the staff at her Burn Boot Camp locations check members notes upon arrival to confirm their validity. The studio is following all protocols, she emphasized.
The safety of our clients and our community is a priority to us because were in the business of safety, which is why were ensuring we stay strictly inside what is requested by the CDC and the government, Bushnell said.
Some of the procedures in place include holding classes at a limited capacity, placing boxes at least 8 feet apart, a virtual check-in process, touchless entry and exits, mask requirements for those not working out and hand sanitizer placed around the building. Bushnell said no equipment is used by the same person in one class, and the staff cleans and sanitizes everything between uses.
So far, she said, it is going well. Though classes are capped at 11 to 12 people, Bushnell said more members are signing up for classes and feeling comfortable with the measures that she and her staff have taken.
People have said they feel safer with all of the policies and procedures that we have in place than they feel just walking into the grocery store, so that makes us feel good because were able to give people their physical health and mental health back for 45 minutes, Bushnell said. We feel comfortable that they also feel safe being in that environment too.
Though Burn Boot Camp was not the first and is not the only gym to open up its doors, Bushnell said she expects to see more gyms and fitness studios in Charlotte hold indoor classes requiring doctors notes.
Halle Hillman, however, has no plans to hold indoor classes at Sweat Method in South End any time soon.
Halle and her fianc and co-owner Justin Gordon hoped to reopen the studio with extreme precautions as soon as Phase 3 took effect. But as that stage kept getting delayed, they had to pivot.
We had made zero profit for three months and we knew that this couldnt keep going on, Hillman said. We decided from the very beginning that were not going to go inside no matter what other people were doing in Charlotte, but we did have to pivot and we were given the opportunity to be outside our studio.
The two began hosting small classes unaffiliated with Sweat Method. When they became increasingly popular, they decided to implement the Charlotte gyms 30-minute Fast and Intense Interval Training (FIIT) class similar to the popular HIIT workouts outdoors in the studios parking lot for up to 25 people, in accordance with North Carolinas Phase 2 guidelines. Hillman said they are also strictly following social distancing measures to keep participants safe.
The new format made sense for their business, too.
About half of the people that are coming to these workouts dont feel comfortable going inside no matter what the circumstances are, and we just want to make sure that we abide by the rules as much as possible, Hillman said. We also know that we can only fit 10 to 12 people in a class indoors but we can fit up to 25 outside with the 6-foot rule, it just makes sense for us as a business to do it that way.
While groups of 25 people are permitted outdoors, CycleBar Matthews owner Patricia Schermer-Mangum decided to limit the studios new outdoor rides to 15 riders and one instructor at a time, with bikes placed 6 feet apart.
Schermer-Mangum has been on both sides of the coin, as she opened her Mount Pleasant location in May in accordance with South Carolinas reopening guidelines. She has felt the sting of COVID-19, too.
In Matthews, its been a struggle, Schermer-Mangum said. Its honestly been disappointments back to back to back. People should know that boutique fitness is very safe and we take the safety of our staff and riders very seriously.
While she knows some boutique fitness studios in North Carolina have reopened with doctors note requirements, she made the decision to maintain outdoor classes in the interest of her staff and the riders.
I didnt want them to feel like I was putting them in harms way, Schermer-Mangum said.
In addition to spacing out the bikes, Schermer-Mangum said CycleBar Matthews implemented strict procedures for riders and staff, including temperature checks before rides, virtual check-ins and requiring riders to bring their own towel and water.
But Schermer-Mangum and Hillman both understand why some Charlotte fitness studios have reopened with indoor classes, and empathize with struggling studio owners.
We have my studio in Mount Pleasant open and we are doing everything we can to keep our riders and staff safe, and it works very well, Schermer-Mangum said. It has been taken from riders and from staff in a very positive way, so the studios that are open, I believe they are being safe and they are taking the precautions necessary. All studio owners want the best for everyone, but we are struggling and we are losing money, and everybody makes different decisions.
Schermer-Mangum said she hopes to see North Carolina rally around the fitness community and support them, similar to how people supported restaurants at the start of the pandemic.
For the time being, the fitness community is sticking together, whether holding indoor classes like Burn Boot Camp or keeping it outdoors like CycleBar and Sweat Method.
I have talked to so many gym owners inside of Charlotte and everyone is handling this differently, but were all working together to not just save our businesses, but serve our community and our clients and give them the health and fitness, both physically and mentally, that they need in their daily lives to keep them healthy, Bushnell said. That is the top priority for every single other gym owner that Ive spoken to.

Shareholders Of Planet Fitness (NYSE:PLNT) Must Be Happy With Their 260% Total Return – Yahoo Finance
When you buy a stock there is always a possibility that it could drop 100%. But on a lighter note, a good company can see its share price rise well over 100%. One great example is Planet Fitness, Inc. (NYSE:PLNT) which saw its share price drive 217% higher over five years. It's even up 13% in the last week. The company reported its financial results recently; you can catch up on the latest numbers by reading our company report.
Check out our latest analysis for Planet Fitness
While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During five years of share price growth, Planet Fitness actually saw its EPS drop 6.6% per year.
This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
On the other hand, Planet Fitness' revenue is growing nicely, at a compound rate of 14% over the last five years. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.
The image below shows how earnings and revenue have tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).
earnings-and-revenue-growth
We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think Planet Fitness will earn in the future (free profit forecasts).
We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Planet Fitness' total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. We note that Planet Fitness' TSR, at 260% is higher than its share price return of 217%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.
While the broader market gained around 20% in the last year, Planet Fitness shareholders lost 19%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 29%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for Planet Fitness (1 can't be ignored) that you should be aware of.
If you like to buy stocks alongside management, then you might just love this free list of companies. (Hint: insiders have been buying them).

Gym-goers weigh the value of fitness memberships during COVID – WLNE-TV (ABC6)
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) Danielle Bisson says shes noticed fewer people at her gym lately due to cancellations.
If you think its not safe for yourself, if you have medical conditions or something, its kind of hard, said the Warwick resident.
But canceling isnt always easy.
I spent probably five weeks trying to tell this guy I want my personal training contract to not renew itself, and I kept getting charged week after week, said Brian Moran of Smithfield.
It added up to about $750 worth of personal training sessions that hadnt been refunded.
It was frustrating, because money was tight with the pandemic, Moran said. I wasnt using the service at all.
Anytime Fitness said this was a misunderstanding, so the personal trainer provided free sessions to make up for the lost ones, and that contract is now canceled.
But some say they havent canceled their memberships because they support their gyms and feel comfortable with the safety protocols theyve put in place.
Bisson, who works in healthcare herself, says her Planet Fitness location in Warwick reminds people to wear masks from the moment they arrive and gives them to people who dont have them.
Anything thats not cardio, you have to wear it at all times, she said of the mask requirement. Every hour theyre using this machine that sanitizes stuff in each section. They wear the masks, theyre fine, the social distancing. Youve just got to follow the rules and stay with it.

Trainella’s Fitness Mantra is All About Transforming From the Inside Out – Influencive
If any industry has caught the attention of many in the last decade, then that is hands down the fitness industry with more and more people getting attracted to it. This, in a way, is a good sign that people are now growing conscious about fitness. On the other hand, what they fail to understand is the importance of both physical and mental well-being. The onset of so-called fitness diets which people consider a trend has resulted in changing the mindsets of many negatively. It was imperative to change their mindsets again positively through experts who can explain the significance of meeting the psychological needs and not just putting the focus only on physical appearance. Health as a subject is about mental and psychological aspects as much as it is about the physical aspects, explains one of the leading wellness enthusiasts and personal trainer named Giedre Vikniute A.K.A. Trainella.
Trainella has always lived a life of purpose where she wants to train people above the conventional aspects of fitness. She aspires to become the kind of personal trainer who inspires and supports her clients on a much higher level. As she realized that psychological needs are also very essential, she decided to dedicate her life to helping and inspiring many others towards nurturing both physical and mental well-being.
Trainella has been in the fitness industry for the last 3 years and has shown her prowess not just as a personal trainer, but also as a Pilates and Aerial Yoga teacher. Through the process of teaching and guiding people in fitness, she has realized that changing the way people look is not enough. Most of them are generally unhappy with their current bodies and keep following diets which do not give them any desired results.
