FARMINGTON The University of Maine at Farmington Fitness and Recreation Center has announced that, after a recent shutdown due to COVID-19, it will reopen, on a limited basis, to the campus and local communities beginning Wednesday, Aug. 12.
The facility will be open from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. It will be closed Saturday and Sunday. It will also be closed Tuesday, Aug. 18, Monday, Aug. 24, and Tuesday, Sept. 1, for COVID-19 testing for incoming students, faculty and staff.
We are so excited we are able to open our doors again to the campus and local community, said Ben White, center director. As with so much of life these days, there are a host of things that have changed, including new safety measures and protocols, but this is a positive first step.
Initial openings will include strength and cardio areas, group fitness, one-to-one personal training and Mainely Outdoors gear rental.
In keeping with its mission to promote personal fitness and a healthy lifestyle, the FRCs opening will make the health and safety of its patrons and staff its first priority.

In addition, individuals:
Must not have visited a location within the past 14 days that is subject to state quarantine requirements.

How Born Primitive Supported Local Gyms Amidst a Pandemic By Pledging $1.5 Million In Gift Cards – GlobeNewswire
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA, Aug. 10, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The COVID-19 pandemic has created vast economic challenges for practically everyone but some industries are feeling this more than others. Among the hardest hit businesses are gyms and fitness centers, which are believed to be an area where the virus can spread easily.
Many gym owners have been forced to shut down their facilities for months. Those in states like Arizona have faced an economic whiplash, initially given the go-ahead to reopen, then forced to shut down again as local cases spiked.
Needless to say, gym owners, fitness trainers and others employed in the industry have been struggling. Even iconic fitness chains like 24 Hour Fitness have declared bankruptcy and announced permanent closures of locations across the country.
Fortunately, companies in related niches are taking notice such as active duty-owned fitness apparel brand Born Primitive, which recently stepped in to support local gyms by offering $1.5 million in gift vouchers to gym members.
Stay For May
As soon as gyms started closing due to the pandemic, they started bleeding memberships, explains Bear Handlon, co-founder of Born Primitive. This was devastating for the gyms. A lot of them were immediately in a position where they were just trying to keep their heads above water.
Recognizing the significant threat the industry was facing, the fitness and CrossFit apparel brand developed a campaign entitled Stay For May. Targeted at gym owners, the idea of the campaign was to help local gyms offer a compelling reason for their customers to retain their memberships, even in the midst of the pandemic.
This campaign was the sequel to our Back the Gyms stimulus initiative, which allowed us to ultimately contribute over $186,000 to local gyms all across America. However, we soon realized what was more important for gym owners was for their customers to keep their memberships. So we pivoted the campaign and took a different approach that attempted to incentivize those who were on the fence about things to stick with their gym for a few more months, says Handlon.
The Stay for May initiative aimed to directly help struggling gyms by offering gift vouchers to patrons who kept their gym membership during the month of May. The gyms themselves didnt have to pay anything instead, the money for the vouchers came directly from Born Primitive and its partners.
By offering gift vouchers from various, fitness-oriented brands that gym users would be interested in, local gym owners could give their customers a reason to not cancel their memberships. It was also easy for gym owners to implement. The gym owner simply needed to share a link with their members. From there, the participating brands were able to deliver the gift vouchers instantly via email.
The Power of a Partnership
To execute the Stay for May campaign, Born Primitive partnered with O2 Natural Recovery Drink. Together, they recruited two additional brands Bear Komplex and Puori in an effort to spread the word and secure additional incentives for gyms.
The $1.5 million in gift vouchers we were able to distribute from Born Primitive was an astonishing amount. But Im incredibly pleased that we made the decision to partner with other brands that raised the total amount of support we were able to provide to over $6 million! Handlon notes. I think that really made an impact in getting more people to stay.
Each brand chipped in by providing a $25 gift voucher to each gym patron, who could then use the voucher at their respective websites. Because each brand focuses on fitness products, the vouchers were a natural fit for gyms and their members.
We will never be able to actually quantify how much of an impact this campaign had on persuading people to keep their memberships, but most importantly, we wanted the gym owners to know they werent alone in this. We wanted to use our brand platform to support them because these local gyms are the foundation of the entire community, and we owe it to them. We are stronger together, Handlon says.
This mindset is not new for Born Primitive, a brand with a history of giving back since they were founded just a few years back. Prior to this campaign, Born Primitive donated over $500,000 to a variety of charities in only four years time charities that supported cancer research and prevention, adaptive athletes, military- and first-responder communities and COVID-relief efforts.
As a business, weve said from day one that we have to use our platform to give back. We need to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. That is something we will never waiver on, Handlon says.
Looking Forward
Even with widespread support for initiatives like Stay for May, many fitness centers and local gyms face an uncertain future. We dont know what the immediate future looks like, especially given the recent uptick in COVID-19 cases in some areas, Handlon admits.
But if we lose our gyms, we lose an essential place for people to improve themselves and get on track for healthier, happier lives. Even when theyre deemed non-essential, we cant lose sight of how big of an impact for good these places can have.
For the time being, at least, fundraisers and programs that encourage customer loyalty are helping ensure that many gyms will still be there when their patrons are able to return.

Galaxy Watch 3: All the fitness features Samsung promised for its next smartwatch – CNET
Samsung
Samsung announced the new Galaxy Watch 3 at its onlineUnpacked eventWednesday alongside the newGalaxy Note 20 phonesand its latestfoldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The newly unveiled Galaxy Watch 3 has the same sleek look and large, circular screen as the original Galaxy Watch, with all the fitness features of the 2019 Galaxy Watch Active 2. There's also the promise of advanced health features like an FDA-cleared electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) and blood oxygen (SpO2) monitoring. But not all of these will be rolling out right away.
The Galaxy Watch 3 brings back the physical rotating bezel from the original Galaxy Watch and the Gear line before it, except the edges of the bezel are now smoother. This dial can be used to control the interface without touching the screen.
That's probably the biggest, and arguably only, difference between the new Watch and the Watch Active 2 apart from physical size. It has no new sensors, and only a few new features that will actually be available at launch.
Like its predecessors, the Watch 3 has built-in GPS, is water-resistant up to 5 atm for both indoor and outdoor swims, and can track up to 40 different activities, seven of them automatically.
It also adds a new feature that lets you sync workout videos from the Galaxy Health app, so you get prompts for each exercise on your wrist while streaming that video on your phone or TV.
Now playing: Watch this: The Galaxy Watch 3 looks great, but some health features...
3:35
The Galaxy Watch 3 will expand on the running-coach feature introduced with the Active 2 by providing real-time feedback on pace and form. At the end of the run, the watch will generate a more detailed analysis, including your flight and contact time, designed to help you improve performance and reduce injury. It will also use maximum oxygen consumption (aka Vo2max) to determine your fitness level and recovery.
In theory, you'll also be able to measure your blood oxygen levels on demand, but this feature, along with the post-run reports, will not be available at launch. Samsung says they will come via software update later in 2020.
And those aren't the only features that are TBD on the Watch 3. It's also equipped with an EKG app that just received clearance in the US from the Food and Drug Adminisitration. It can signal when your heart rhythm could indicate atrial fibrillation (aka aFib), a serious heart condition that could lead to stroke. There's also a blood pressure app that's still pending FDA clearance. In theory, both of these could have been available on other Galaxy Watches such as the Active 2, but the features have remained dormant until now. Samsung wasn't able to provide a timeline for when these additional features would roll out to US users -- at launch they will be available only in South Korea.
One of the new health features that will be available off the bat is the new trip detection, which works similarly to the fall detection feature on the Apple Watch (Series 4 and above). The watch will immediately notify an emergency contact if it detects that you've taken a hard fall, and will share your location.
Discover the latest news and best reviews in smartphones and carriers from CNET's mobile experts.
The Galaxy Watch 3 is also designed to make sleep tracking more robust by analyzing the four stages of sleep and issuing a sleep score based on quality and duration, along with tips on how to improve. It can also track stress levels on command like its predecessors.
The Galaxy Watch 3 will be available in 41mm and 45mm options, both available in metal finishes of silver or bronze. The 45mm version will also be availble in black, and even a titanium version. The watch starts at $399 (399, AU$649) for the 41mm Wi-Fi-only model, and it's $50 (40, AU$150) more for LTE.
Check back for the full review in the coming days.

Fitness watches are indeed accurate, but theyll likely ramp up your anxiety – Study Finds
New study shows that fitness trackers may help users pound the pavement more often, but it might be at the expense of their nerves.
COPENHAGEN, Denmark With more capabilities from technology comes more concerns. Its a recurring theme in modern life: the gadgets and inventions that do so much to simplify our lives in one area end up complicating matters to no end in another. Now, a new study finds a similar relationship regarding fitness watches and health apps, the popular tools that help people keep closer track of their heart health, physical activity, and sleeping habits.
Researchers from the University of Copenhagen conclude that fitness trackers are quite capable of collecting accurate data. Naturally, the technology helps motivate wearers to adopt a healthier lifestyle. However, besides all that, researchers also note a downside to these devices: they almost always make the wearer feel more anxious.
Our study shows that, overall, self-measurements are more problematic than beneficial when it comes to the patient experience. Patients begin to use the information from their Fitbits just as they would use a doctor. However, they dont get help interpreting their watch data. This makes them unnecessarily anxious, or they may learn something that is far from reality, explains co-study author Tariq Osman Andersen, an assistant professor at the University of Copenhagens Department of Computer Science, in a release.
A group of 27 heart patients with cardiac arrhythmia and pacemakers (between the ages of 28-74) was asked to wear a Fitbit devices for six months. During that period, the Fitbits tracked each persons heart rate, sleeping habits, and overall physical activity. Participants also periodically checked in with the studys authors for interviews.
Researchers say there were some clear patterns among the participants. While patients enjoyed having a better understanding of their bodies, that additional information almost always made them nervous. For example, if a participant noticed that he (or she) isnt sleeping as well as a month prior, that person would almost instantly jump to the conclusion that their diminished sleep patterns are having an adverse effect on their heart.
Another example is wearers overanalyzing small fluctuations in heart rate. Some participants feared a heart attack was coming just because of a higher heart rate reading from his or her Fitbit.
That being said, more data can also calm the nerves as well.
Conversely, the Fitbit watch can be calming, if data shows that you are sleeping well and have a low heart rate, says Andersen. The problem is that you cannot use data directly related to heart disease because the watch is designed for sports and wellness, as opposed to managing disease.
The Fitbits also can be double-edged swords regarding exercise. On one hand, the trackers motivate participants to exercise more always a positive. But, on days when participants slack off, the device reminds them of that too, often triggering intense feelings of guilt.
The Fitbit watch is not designed for heart patients, so they should not necessarily follow the same recommendations for exercise as those who are in good health, Andersen adds.
So, what can be done? Users of these devices need a better way to interpret and understand the health data theyre reading, the authors say.
We believe it is time to think in terms of collaborative care, where both patient and clinicians benefit from the new health data and are thereby able to work together to manage and treat chronic diseases. This requires that we create a digital platform in which clinicians and patients can jointly interpret data from, for example, fitness watches, without creating unnecessary additional work for clinicians, Andersen concludes.
The study is published in Journal of Medical Internet Research.

Woman claims she was evicted from St. Albans Planet Fitness over her clothing – Local 22/44 News
The Planet Fitness in St. Albans is facing scrutiny after a disagreement over the clothing a member was wearing.
On Thursday, a woman posted on Facebook that she was working out at Planet Fitness in gym shorts when she was asked to change clothes.
I entered the gym, changed, walked to the free weights and did exactly one minute of jumping jacks before an employee approached me and said multiple people had complained my shorts were too short and I needed to change
According to her post, she was told multiple people were uncomfortable with what she was wearing. But she said she was able to confirm with other people working out that they were okay with her outfit.
I turned to the 4 people working out and asked them if my shorts were intimidating. They said no. I turned back to the employees and told them that nobody is bothered by my shorts and that I was sick of being harassed for my clothing and if no one else has an issue with my shorts I wasnt leaving.
She wrote that once she did that, Planet Fitness staff told her to leave. She refused, and the St. Albans Police were called. After talking with the officers, the woman said she would change her clothes and leave.
We reached out to the woman, and the Saint Albans Planet Fitness location, they have not replied to our request for comment. The Saint Albans Police Department did respond, but told us no one was available for an interview.
The woman said she has received support on Facebook, adding that the company thrives on weakness .
I have had over 300 people from across the US and Canada reach out furious about this situation with at least a third sharing their own Planet Fitness horror stories They are all women.

Top Fitness Industry Owners Point to Scientific Evidence, Call on Governors to Keep Gyms Open – PRNewswire
WASHINGTON, July 7, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --Today, over 60 of America's top fitness industry leaders signed an open letter calling on all United States governors to allow gyms to remain open safely as states take action to curb the COVID-19 crisis.
The letter cites specific science-backed evidence that gyms are not the culprit when it comes to spikes in COVID-19 cases, in part due to their strong safety and sanitation protocols as they reopen. It also advocates for the mental and physical health benefits of exercising, particularly the maintenance of a healthy immune system.
The full text of the letter, officially issued by the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA), may be found hereand below.
BACKGROUND:
After COVID-19 caused gyms to close for several months, business owners took action to adapt and make sure that their businesses could reopen safely and responsibly by putting forward new policies and protocols that follow social distancing guidelines and enhance cleaning and sanitation practices. While most states have allowed gyms to reopen in some capacity, some states like Michigan and New York have yet to reopen gyms. Additionally, Arizona recently shut down gyms for 30 days because of a spike of COVID-19 cases although evidence did not show that the gyms were responsible for the spikes. In response to this, many of the nation's top fitness industry leaders are speaking out and calling on governors to look at scientific evidence that proves gyms are safe to exercise in.
LETTER:
July 7, 2020
To the Governors of the United States of America:
Health and wellness have never been more essential to our country as they are at this very moment.
We know each of you is under immense pressure to stop the spread of COVID-19 in your state. We are writing to ask that you consider scientific evidence, Americans' mental and physical health, and not shut down gyms and fitness centers that can operate safely.
As leaders in the fitness and wellness industry, we value above all else the health and wellbeing of the millions of members (and staff) who visit the tens of thousands of gyms, clubs and studios operating across the 50 states. We are equally committed to doing our part to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and our members, who are health conscious, share this mindset.
Here is what we know: There is clear evidence that the fitness industry is not the problem when it comes to the spread of the virus.
Evidence shows the fitness industry is not spreading COVID-19. This past spring, we closed our facilities in good faith and based on your mandates to help flatten the COVID-19 curve. Given how little was known about the new virus, it was the right thing to do for the safety and well-being of our members and employees. We then worked within each of your states to develop stringent safety and sanitation protocols for reopening fitness locations including limited capacities, distancing mandates, sanitation and cleaning standards, face mask requirements for staff members and more.
It was also important for us to share these rigorous reopening standards with our members, who are health conscious and understand that our facilities are reopening in a safe and responsible manner.
Today, we have evidence since reopening that gyms, clubs and studios are not causing the current virus spikes many states are seeing.
In a survey of 135 clubs with 3,443,123 total check-ins, fitness industry consultant, Blair McHaney of MXM/Medallia reports that there were 0.004% of positive cases reported as of June 30.
Contact tracing in some states supports this finding. For example, while Arkansas is experiencing a spike in COVID-19 cases, contact tracing from the state government shows 0.3% of newly infected individuals visited a gym. Additionally, new research from the University of Oslo found no COVID-19 transmissions associated with fitness centers in a randomized trial of reopened fitness facilities. (As a result, Norway reopened its gyms nationwide.)
Meanwhile... there's an absence of evidence.
It's worth noting that our industry has seen NO tracing data provided by public health officials that indicates that gyms, clubs or studios in the U.S. are contributing to the spread of the virus.
And let's not forget: Exercise strengthens immune systems
Moderate exercise has been shown time and again to help immune systems. Data shows that obesity increases the likelihood of hospitalization with a COVID-19 infection six-fold.
However, according to worldwide fitness tracker data, physical activity has decreased by 5% since the pandemic began no doubt, in part to the shutdown of gyms, clubs and studios. The millions of Americans who represent our members make a conscious decision to take care of their individual physical health by working out. They also know that exercise has emotional and mental benefits as well. These Americans are worthy of having access to the gyms, clubs and studios to take care of their health.
Combined, these data points offer clear indications that the safety and sanitation policies implemented at gyms, clubs and studios that have been allowed to reopen are effective and that these businesses may pose little to no additional risk for COVID-19 transmission compared to other public places.
Plus, we provide an essential service to help Americans stay healthy and strong. The vast majority of clubs, gyms and studios across the U.S. are small, locally-owned businesses.
They provide essential services to their members, are responsible members of their community and are safe to operate according to all available scientific evidence.
We call on you, governors, and your respective departments of health, to consider the evidence on where the virus is spreading when making decisions and allow gyms, clubs and studios to safely operate in your state. As an industry, we will in turn continue to operate in good faith to ensure the facilities that millions of Americans trust to help them stay healthy and strong are clean, safe and operating in a responsible manner.
