Top Fitness Industry Owners Point to Scientific Evidence, Call on Governors to Keep Gyms Open – Yahoo Finance

WASHINGTON, July 7, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --Today, over 60 of America's top fitness industry leaders signed an open letter calling on all United States governors to allow gyms to remain open safely as states take action to curb the COVID-19 crisis.

The letter cites specific science-backed evidence that gyms are not the culprit when it comes to spikes in COVID-19 cases, in part due to their strong safety and sanitation protocols as they reopen. It also advocates for the mental and physical health benefits of exercising, particularly the maintenance of a healthy immune system.

The full text of the letter, officially issued by the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA), may be found hereand below.

After COVID-19 caused gyms to close for several months, business owners took action to adapt and make sure that their businesses could reopen safely and responsibly by putting forward new policies and protocols that follow social distancing guidelines and enhance cleaning and sanitation practices. While most states have allowed gyms to reopen in some capacity, some states like Michigan and New York have yet to reopen gyms. Additionally, Arizona recently shut down gyms for 30 days because of a spike of COVID-19 cases although evidence did not show that the gyms were responsible for the spikes. In response to this, many of the nation's top fitness industry leaders are speaking out and calling on governors to look at scientific evidence that proves gyms are safe to exercise in.

Health and wellness have never been more essential to our country as they are at this very moment.

We know each of you is under immense pressure to stop the spread of COVID-19 in your state. We are writing to ask that you consider scientific evidence, Americans' mental and physical health, and not shut down gyms and fitness centers that can operate safely.

As leaders in the fitness and wellness industry, we value above all else the health and wellbeing of the millions of members (and staff) who visit the tens of thousands of gyms, clubs and studios operating across the 50 states. We are equally committed to doing our part to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and our members, who are health conscious, share this mindset.

Here is what we know: There is clear evidence that the fitness industry is not the problem when it comes to the spread of the virus.

Evidence shows the fitness industry is not spreading COVID-19. This past spring, we closed our facilities in good faith and based on your mandates to help flatten the COVID-19 curve. Given how little was known about the new virus, it was the right thing to do for the safety and well-being of our members and employees. We then worked within each of your states to develop stringent safety and sanitation protocols for reopening fitness locations including limited capacities, distancing mandates, sanitation and cleaning standards, face mask requirements for staff members and more.

It was also important for us to share these rigorous reopening standards with our members, who are health conscious and understand that our facilities are reopening in a safe and responsible manner.

Today, we have evidence since reopening that gyms, clubs and studios are not causing the current virus spikes many states are seeing.

In a survey of 135 clubs with 3,443,123 total check-ins, fitness industry consultant, Blair McHaney of MXM/Medallia reports that there were 0.004% of positive cases reported as of June 30.

Contact tracing in some states supports this finding. For example, while Arkansas is experiencing a spike in COVID-19 cases, contact tracing from the state government shows 0.3% of newly infected individuals visited a gym. Additionally, new research from the University of Oslo found no COVID-19 transmissions associated with fitness centers in a randomized trial of reopened fitness facilities. (As a result, Norway reopened its gyms nationwide.)

Meanwhile... there's an absence of evidence.

It's worth noting that our industry has seen NO tracing data provided by public health officials that indicates that gyms, clubs or studios in the U.S. are contributing to the spread of the virus.

And let's not forget: Exercise strengthens immune systems

Moderate exercise has been shown time and again to help immune systems. Data shows that obesity increases the likelihood of hospitalization with a COVID-19 infection six-fold.

However, according to worldwide fitness tracker data, physical activity has decreased by 5% since the pandemic began no doubt, in part to the shutdown of gyms, clubs and studios. The millions of Americans who represent our members make a conscious decision to take care of their individual physical health by working out. They also know that exercise has emotional and mental benefits as well. These Americans are worthy of having access to the gyms, clubs and studios to take care of their health.

Combined, these data points offer clear indications that the safety and sanitation policies implemented at gyms, clubs and studios that have been allowed to reopen are effective and that these businesses may pose little to no additional risk for COVID-19 transmission compared to other public places.

Plus, we provide an essential service to help Americans stay healthy and strong. The vast majority of clubs, gyms and studios across the U.S. are small, locally-owned businesses.

They provide essential services to their members, are responsible members of their community and are safe to operate according to all available scientific evidence.

We call on you, governors, and your respective departments of health, to consider the evidence on where the virus is spreading when making decisions and allow gyms, clubs and studios to safely operate in your state. As an industry, we will in turn continue to operate in good faith to ensure the facilities that millions of Americans trust to help them stay healthy and strong are clean, safe and operating in a responsible manner.

Mohammad Shami`s new workout video will give you major fitness goals–Watch – Zee News

While India are yet to play an international fixture after the game was distrupted in March due to coronavirus pandemic, fast bowler Mohammad Shami is making sure to not compromise with his fitness and be match ready once the BCCI resumes the training session.

On Sunday, the 29-year-old took to his official Twitter handle and posted a new video of him working out at the gym.

"Work hard," Shami wrote along with the video.

In the video, the Indian pacer could be seen doing pull-ups

Recently, Shami made a return to the nets, not for the national setup, but at his hometown in Uttar Pradesh. In the video posted on his official Instagram account, the Indian bowler could be seen bowling to fomer cricketer Mohammad Kaif.

Earlier this month, Shami had stated that he would have an advantage when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) resumes training for its players.

His comments came as he made the most of this forced break by training regularly at his farmhouse when most of his teammates haven't been able to do their workouts constantly.

Obviously I will have an advantage as I have been training quite regularly. This is different from an injury-induced break. I have been in good rhythm, and luckily, I dont feel any stiffness while bowling full tilt. This is a phase when you always know that you are there and its a matter of time to get that rhythm back. It bolsters your confidence, Shami had told PTI earlier this month.

Amid coronavirus lockdown, Shami has shared a number of videos from his workout sessions on his official Instagram account. Let us take a look at some of his other workout videos:

Shami was set to represent Kings XI Punjab in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which was slated to take place from March 29 to May 24 but was postponed by the BCCI in April due to coronavirus pandemic.

Third fitness trail: another community success for North Ridgeville – cleveland.com

NORTH RIDGEVILLE, Ohio Its time to celebrate in North Ridgeville. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on July 16 to open the Heart and Sole Fitness Trail.

Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Fougerousse said, This trail will be the third phase of improvements to the walkability of the complex--the first two being completed three and four years ago.

Fougerousse noted there is even potential for further additions to the trail in the future. Our goal was always to finish this to make it a trail system within the city of North Ridgeville, he said. The current project began in May and concluded in mid-June.

The six-foot wide, asphalt trail is designed for a variety of uses, including walking, jogging and biking. Fougerousse said it will wrap between and behind several of the baseball fields at the complex. The overall goal, he said, is to promote health and wellness and to keep moving forward with trails throughout the city.

Total cost of the project was $148,454. We received an Ohio Department of Natural Resources grant in the amount of $67,482, said Fougerousse. We also received a donation of $15,000 from North Ridgeville Heart & Sole. The remaining balance of $65,972 for the trail was paid from the Parks & Recreation Improvement Fund. General fund dollars were not used for this project.

The socially distanced ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the North Ridgeville Heart & Sole Fitness Trail will take place at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, July 16 at the Shady Drive Complex, 37077 Shady Drive.

My hope for the community is that they now have another trail they can utilize in our parks. We have been active over the last few years to add trails throughout the city. (This) trail will be called the North Ridgeville Heart & Sole Fitness Trail, said Fougerousse.

4 Ways You May Have Been Conditioned To Hate Fitness As A Kid – HuffPost

Experiences we have when were young are incredibly formative especially when it comes to something like exercise.

Fitness isnt just physical; it also has a major effect on the mind. If you have a positive outlook on it (or even just a tolerable one), the likelihood is pretty good that exercise will improve your mental health. But if youve had negative emotions about working out in the past, chances are that moving your body can cause more stress than you may even think is worth it.

Part of that stems from how you may have thought about exercise when you were young. There are a handful of subtle ways we can be conditioned to hate fitness as kids. Below are just a few of them:

Mandated School Fitness Tests And Curriculum

Requiring students to participate in physical activity and testing their abilities related to it can have an emotional toll.

I personally didnt have any interest in exercise as a kid ... what was mainly provided at school was very sport-heavy. And if you werent gifted at those things, it felt like there wasnt much else to do, said Tally Rye, a personal trainer in the U.K. and author of Train Happy: An Intuitive Exercise Plan for Every Body.

Take the Presidential Physical Fitness Test, a required exam that measured fitness levels. The program was a staple in many schools across the United States for decades. Middle and high school students had to perform activities like a timed mile, pull-ups, a sit and reach for flexibility, sit-ups and more.

(The test was replaced in 2012 with a new assessment that aims to focus on overall health rather than just physical fitness. So at least a new generation of students will be able to focus on the bigger picture of wellness.)

Some states still mandate some version of a fitness test, and some areas even measure students body mass index. But grading kids on their physicality can have a psychological impact; some evidence suggests negative experiences with physical education may have an effect on self-esteem.

Pressure To Perform Or Succeed In Team Sports

I think participating in sports as a child can definitely shape the way kids feel about fitness, said Lauren Leavell, a certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor in Philadelphia. I never participated in after-school sports but I did take dance classes. I believe there can be a lot of positive habits formed with movement if the sport or activity is something that is encouraging and positive. For others, these childhood extracurriculars can feel punishing and discourage folks from participating in that type of movement later.

Playing sports can be a positive experience that instills resilience, but it can also teeter in the wrong direction, depending on the pressure kids are facing. Reports show that many teen athletes struggle with depression. Research has also found that student-athletes can experience high levels of perfectionism and burnout, along with other related mental health issues. Thats why its important to have people in place who are aware of this problem and can help young athletes manage these issues.

Media Portraying Exercise As A Way To Get A Perfect Body

TV shows, movies, magazines, social media take your pick. The images and messaging teens and young adults consume can affect how they feel about themselves and how they interact with the world, especially when it comes to body image.

Especially as an adolescent and young adult, I always saw fitness as something you do to lose weight, Rye said. Thats pretty much all I saw people using it for. I never heard people talking about doing it for enjoyment or any other benefits. My assumption was based on what was in magazines, with exercises showing you how to get Britney Spears abs.

Witnessing A Parent Or Caregivers Poor Relationship With Exercise

As kids, we soak up everything we see and hear especially when it comes from the people raising us. If a caregiver or parent had a poor relationship with exercise and openly discussed it, you may have similar feelings as an adult.

For example, the belief that exercise is something you have to do, not something that is good for you and that you want to do, is a common viewpoint many of us still have today.

I think, like anything, fitness can be made into a chore, Leavell said. If movement is not something that parents speak highly of but kids are forced to do it, there is an underlying feeling that exercise is something you do until you dont have to anymore.

10'000 Hours via Getty Images

Heres how to have a more positive relationship with exercise as an adult.

This isnt to say that young people shouldnt learn about exercise or be put in programs that develop their fitness or sports skills. There are undeniable benefits to doing so, and exercise is crucial to a persons overall health. The key is creating a healthy relationship with it.

For adults who may have endured some of these negative experiences, that relationship might now be complicated. Years of viewing fitness as punishment can take some time to repair.

Rye said she always advises people to think about whats actually enjoyable for them. The question I always ask is, If exercise had no impact on your weight or your appearance, how would you choose to move your body? she said. Most people have never thought about what they actually want to do, theyve only thought about what theyve been told is the best thing to do.

Leavell recommended going slow when you start a new fitness journey and leaning on a support system. Start small and remember you do not have to stick with one thing, she said. If you are really unsure of where to start, try things with your friends. Even if cardio boxing does not sound like your thing, try it out anyway.

You can also take advantage of the extra options available to you online right now. Currently, there are so many opportunities online to try teachers from all over the world. It is the perfect time to test something new and not worry about the commitment, Leavell said.

And continue to remind yourself that physical activity isnt just for your body its for your mind, too. Its really all about changing the intention behind your workout and saying, what Im going to do is self-care rather than Im doing this to burn calories or get shredded, Rye said. Really shift to self-care-based reasons.

Finally, advocate for more positive fitness programs for kids. If you have children of your own, teach them about how to make exercise fun.

Exercise isnt bad the way we learn about it sometimes is.

This story is part of Dont Sweat It, a HuffPost Life series on improving your relationship with fitness. Were giving you a guide on the latest thinking on exercise and why weve been conditioned to hate it in the past. Mental health and body-positive fitness experts will offer guidance and show you how to find a routine that works for you. Find all of our coverage here.

Fitness Tracker Or Smartwatch; What Is The Right Choice For You? – Gizbot

A Fitness Tracker?

Let's start with a fitness tracker. Thanks to brands like Fitbit, Huami, and others, fitness trackers have reached the masses. Moreover, brands like Mi, Honor, and others have made fitness trackers an affordable option. Fitness trackers have nearly every feature you find in a smartwatch today. It can track your steps, your oxygen levels, fitness modes, sleep, and so on.

A fitness tracker, once paired with your smartphone will give you notification alerts, including incoming calls. However, you can't reply to a text using a fitness tracker. There are a couple of fitness trackers that allow users to answer calls, a feature missing on many. At the same time, not all smartwatches allow users to reply to texts either.

A smartwatch, on the other hand, is more sophisticated than fitness trackers. While most of the functionalities of a smartwatch and fitness tracker are alike, a smartwatch offers a couple of additional features. For instance, the Amazfit Stratos 3 packs a music feature, where users can transfer their favorite songs to the smartwatch and play it via Bluetooth-linked earbuds.

Some of the features particular to smartwatches include onboard storage, GPS, pressure sensors, to name a few. While a fitness tracker's design is more athletic, smartwatches can be either elegant or bulky and rugged. Smartwatches from makers like Fossil, Garmin, Apple have developed elegant smartwatches with premium features.

The Apple Watch needs a special mention under smartwatches. The Apple Watch is one of the first smartwatches to hit the market and packs a couple of premium features. What's more, the Apple Watch has time and again proved to be one of the best devices, especially in instances where it's helped save lives.

The price is one of the important factors to bear in mind while buying any device. Comparatively, fitness trackers are more affordable than smartwatches. Do bear in mind that there's a wide range to choose from for both types of wearables. Before buying either a smartwatch or a fitness tracker, you need to chalk down your basic needs and interests.

For instance, if you're more into outdoor activities like cycling, trekking, hiking, and so on, go ahead and invest in a good smartwatch. On the other hand, if you want to simply track your everyday health goals, your sleeping data, and steps, you can choose from the n number of fitness trackers in the market.

For instance, smartwatches from Amazfit, Honor, provide some of the best smartwatches for outdoor activities. These include ruggedized designs, multiple sports modes, GPS, and so on, which make it a great accessory for outdoor activities, especially hiking, cycling, trekking, mountain climbing, and so on.

If like me, you're into regular fitness like yoga or a dedicated jog in the morning, then a fitness tracker could be the right choice for you. One of the best things I prefer in a fitness tracker is its light and sleek design. Comparatively, smartwatches can be quite bulky. Wearing a fitness tracker throughout the night for sleep tracking is much more comfortable than a smartwatch.

At the same time, if you insist on getting a smartwatch, but you're not into many outdoor activities, there are many elegant options to choose from. Not only from Fossil or Apple, but brands like Garmin, Realme, and others have also launched smartwatches that can be worn for your business meeting.

Ultimately, the choice is yours. Do remember, be it a smartwatch or a fitness tracker, you'll still need to charge it regularly. The battery of the wearable will largely depend on how you use it. Whatever your choice, make sure that your fitness tracker or smartwatch caters to your need and you're comfortable wearing it throughout the day.

Seattle’s Best Group Fitness Classes | Seattle, WA

OUR INSTRUCTORSMost boutique fitness studios in Seattle focus on a single format with specific methodologies from which instructors cannot diverge. Community Fitness not only offers more formats than any other group exercise studio in Seattle, each seasoned instructor has a unique methodology which makes for an incredibly diverse schedule of classes and programs.

The very best group exercise instructors are natural-born artists who teach as a way of life, as a form of creative self-expression. Their artistry inspires us to express our own creative energy. Most great fitness trainers also exhibit an intriguing combination of both divine masculine and divine feminine qualities, irrespective of their gender. Often referred to as Yin and Yang, an instructor who has both can be a confident leader as well as a compassionate friend.

Its the instructors themselves that bring the group fitness experience to life. What good is a revolutionary group exercise class if you dont like the person teaching it? Fitness trends come and go, as does our ability to stay motivated. But relationships with friends, workout buddies and inspirational trainers can keep us accountable and last a lifetime. Which is why our continuing mission is to assemble the most talented and popular fitness instructors from across the city, under one roof.

OUR FACILITYOur gym is centrally located in Seattle between Greenlake and the University of Washington, two blocks from the Roosevelt neighborhood Whole Foods. While we choose to exercise indoors, we honor our Northwest heritage with decor that embraces natural outdoor elements of wood, metal, stone and natural sunlight.

All three studios have sprung floors to reduce joint impact and acoustical ceilings that allow instructor voices to be clearly heard even when music is playing. Each room has state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems for ambience, and our two largest studios have projectors on either side of an elevated instructor stage, displaying the instructors image to improve participant sight lines.

We strive to create a respectful space within our classrooms, where clients can focus on doing what makes them healthy and happy. We define success not by how much revenue our business produces, but by how much revenue we are able to reinvest in our employees, our facility, and our client services.

OUR COMMUNITYBuilding community, where we can work, play, and improve our lives in the great city of Seattle thats our mission. We are a relationship based business, not only between instructors and participants, but also co-worker to co-worker and client to client.

Life is an ensemble performance. No one can do it alone. ~ Matt Kahn

We need to work together if we plan to succeed and thrive individually and collectively. Everyone is doing the best they can, and we all deserve to be treated with professionalism and respect. Its time for the qualities of the divine feminine to be brought into equal balance alongside the divine masculine. In honor of goodness, unity and equality, lets not focus on what divides us, but what we have in common.

We all want to be healthy and fit, or maybe burn calories and lose some weight. Whatever our aspirations may be, with the support of family, friends, neighbors and folks who have similar interests, achieving our goals will be easier, and a lot more fun! At Community Fitness you can sweat, be real, and connect with others doing the same.
