Fitness Category Strong In The US – SGB Media

The Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA)s 2020 Single Sport Reports covering fitness activities find traditionally niche fitness activities are growing significantly. These activities include Yoga (6.0 percent), Barre (3.8 percent) and Stationary Cycling Group (5.3 percent); which, in addition to reflecting healthy growth in 2019, also indicates they have been growing over the last five years.

The most popular fitness categories, boasting 50-to 100-plus million participants, all increased in participation in 2019 Treadmill (5.7 percent), Running/Jogging (1.2 percent), Walking for Fitness (0.4 percent) and Free Weights Dumbbells/Hand Weights (0.3 percent).

The 24 individual fitness activity reports arenow available.

Participation rates for fitness activities have been strong and consistent, said SFIA CEO and president, Tom Cove. The fact that participation in nearly every category increased in 2019 reflects the breadth and importance of fitness in the United States. These reports provide readers with an unparalleled understanding of each activity on an individual basis, whether it be yoga, weightlifting, HIIT (high-intensity training), or dance.

The fitness segment was robust going into 2020, and while the pandemic is deeply impacting the health club industry, all indications suggest home fitness activities and product sales will skyrocket this year under COVID-related restrictions, Cove added.

All 2020 SFIA Single Sport and Fitness Participation Reports are $99 (per report) to all current SFIA members and $295 for non-members. More information about these reports can be found by clicking here.

Apple wins a Patent with emphasis on a Fitness Band with an Alphanumeric-Text UI using Light-Transmissive Fibers – Patently Apple

Last Thursday Patently Apple posted a patent application report in-part titled "Apple Considers entering the Fitness Band market." In that patent Apple described "a wearable band without any wristwatch unit (e.g., a band of the type sometimes referred to as a health band, fitness band, or activity band." Today Apple was granted patent for a "Woven Display" with a patent figure clearly not an Apple Watch.

We originally covered this invention back in 2015. Apple's first granted patent was covered in December 2016. What's new in today's second granted patent is found in Apple's patent claims.

It is here where Apple is placing more emphasis on the fitness band side of the invention and not Apple Watch. It emphasizes an Alphanumeric text interface that is driven by light-transmissive fabric fibers with a multi-color light source.

Apple's second granted patent 10,687,592 was filed in Q4 2016 and published today by the US Patent and Trademark Office.

Apple has been the leader in pure smartwatch shipments for years hands down and in Q1 Apple crushed Samsung. Many of those competing with Apple, like Fitbit and Xiaomi, are wrongfully included in analytical reports for 'wearables' making these low-end band makers look as if they're catching with Apple. Xiaomi sells millions of bands from $14 to $40 on Amazon.

Apple may enter the fitness band category but for sure they won't be aiming for a $50 model. Even in fitness bands we could count on Apple to redefine the fitness band with some class at a decent price where they could make a profit. Still, it would allow Apple to compete in emerging markets like India and Africa where price is a major factor.

SilverSneakers recognizes Longmont teacher as finalist for Instructor of the Year award – Longmont Times-Call

Longmonts Jennine Amato doesnt try to pretend that exercise isnt work, but her ability as a fitness instructor to infuse humor with routine often makes her senior students forget that it is.

These traits were among the reasons Amato was named as a finalist for the SilverSneakers Instructor of the Year award, which recognizes fitness teachers who make a positive impact on students in SilverSneakers senior fitness program. In March, SilverSneakers put out a calling for nominations for the 2020 award at its more than 18,000 program locations in the U.S., according to the Associated Press. Amato was the first finalist of four recognized in the competition. Eliot Perez, a fitness instructor out of Houston, Texas, was awarded the title as Instructor of the Year.

Amato earned a personal trainer certification and is a licensed massage therapist, specializing in care for seniors. She works for the Longmont Recreation Center and teaches classes at the Longmont Senior Center and Golds Gym in Longmont. When shes not in the gym, she likes to work on her improvisational comedy, testing out her skills on stage at places such as the Voodoo Comedy playhouse in Denver. While comedy and exercise may seem like different worlds, Amato believes humor and fitness are key to overall wellness.

They call it working out for a reason, because its work, Amato said. It feels like work. Nothing has to feel heavy and uncomfortable for it to be productive, adding play and light heartedness, you dont even notice how hard youre working out.

Amato has about five years of experience teaching fitness classes. Before the coronavirus pandemic brought group fitness to a halt, closing gyms and city buildings across Boulder County, Amato taught about eight classes a week. Through her classes and work as a masseuse, shes seen seniors regain some mobility and independence. Seeing this progress is one of the most rewarding aspects of her job, she said.

Reclaiming that autonomy is so huge; thats my jam, I love it, Amato said.

Amato understands what its like to live with daily physical pain. She has an auto immune disorder called Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome, a multi-symptom illness that causes a wide array of issues such as brain fog, shooting pains and shortness of breath. Having her own health struggles to work through gives her compassion for what her senior students are experiencing.

Maybe you cant do everything you used to do and that might challenge your identity, Amato said. It challenges you daily, so how do you be resilient through that and work with those ebbs and flows? I get what theyre going through.

Amatos students say fitness results and the atmosphere Amato creates in her classes have kept them coming back.

Laura Cooper, 71, of Longmont, has been taking Amatos classes for the past three years. Before the pandemic, she was a regular in Amatos twice-a-week circuit classes.

Her classes rocks my world in so many ways, Cooper said. It gets my heart rate up, gets me exercising, the whole bit and she keeps you smiling through the whole thing. (Jennine) has a lot of devotion. She doesnt talk down to us. She respects us as human beings and she makes it fun and thats important.

Each month, Amato creates a new routine to build on students skills.

You start off thinking, What has she come up with this time? but by the time you get to the end of the month, you can do it, Cooper said.

Joan Tallman, 84, of Longmont, has been taking Amatos classes for about three years. Tallman said shes tried other fitness classes, but described them as monotonous.

(Jennine) is fabulous, Tallman said. With Jennine, every month, she has a new series. It could be the same exercises but in a different way. If youre doing something wrong, she bounces off that stage and helps you.

Debbie Davis, 66, of Longmont, has been Amatos student for almost two years, making many new friends through her classes. She said Amatos care for her students is apparent.

Shes funny, warm, professional (and) always upping her own training in senior physical and mental fitness, Davis said.

When Amato thinks about the recognition from SilverSneakers, she said it is also a tribute to her students, too.

It was pretty exciting, Amato said of being named a finalist. It isnt from anything that I feel like Ive done directly, because it came from my members and the stories that they submitted, so it kind of felt like we were all getting awarded.

Big Rapids gyms, fitness centers to reopen Thursday

BIG RAPIDS Fitness enthusiasts will be able to start lifting weights and running on treadmills this week as local gyms are set to reopen Thursday.

Last week, a U.S. District Judge ruled all gyms in the state can reopen at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, June 25.

One locally-owned gym that will be opening its doors on Thursday is JDFit in downtown Big Rapids.

"We're excited to get everyone back and rolling," said JDFit founder John Durante. "We're looking forward to getting our clients back."

Durante said beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday the gym will reopen and will be open 24/7 to members. He said group exercise classes will resume at their normal schedule starting June 29.

Durante explained he hopes by keeping the gym open all day and night, the gym will never become too crowded.

"We are sticking with being open 24 hours a day because it will space out when people can come into the gym," he said

In an effort to keep members safe and healthy, Durante said he will be cleaning the gym every couple of hours and members are asked to complete a brief health screening when signing up.

"We ask that if you feel sick, do the right thing and don't come in," he said.

Durante noted the outdoor fitness classes he was offering Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings will not be continuing at the park. However, if the indoor fitness classes become too crowded, he may be able to move them outside so more people can attend and participate.

"For all intents and purposes, we are moving back inside," he said.

Another area gym which will be opening at 7 a.m. Thursday is Planet Fitness.

The organization also will be reopening locations throughout the state.

While people can begin working out again at JDFit and Planet Fitness, those interested in attending TNT Gym will have to wait a little longer.

Ryan Tift, son of owner Jeff Tift, said they have been working over the past several weeks to renovate and refurbish the decades-old gym, and while they are close to the finish line, there is still a little more work to be done.

"Right now we have some construction we need to do still," Tift said. "We want to be open as soon as possible."

Tift said they plan to host a soft opening event mid-July for everyone in the community to attend to check out the changes in the gym and decide if they would like to sign up to be a member.

After the soft opening, he said the gym will officially be open for business.

"People are excited to get back in here and we are excited to open back up," Tift said.

Rapha pairs with lifestyle fitness brand to create new womens range – Cycling Weekly

Rapha has unveiled a brand new range of womens clothing, working alongside US brand Outdoor Voices.

For those unfamiliar with Outdoor Voices (we were!) the brand is a legging and active wear phenomenon the most obvious comparisons to spring to our minds were Lululemon and Sweaty Betty.

The range consists of jerseys, a packable, waist and bib shorts, bar bag, light sports bra, cap, socks and cropped t-shirt.Sports bras are still an area where Cycling Weeklys tech team (female contingent) feels theres major work to be done, so weve called one in to test (as well as the bar bag) and will be bringing a full review in the coming months.

Whilst the collection features the chamois pads and quick wicking fabrics we expect from Rapha, the imagery and design takes notes from marketing more traditionally focused at the female market.

Whilst many female cyclists are seeking the cutting edge in tech and find marketing which mirrors the mens versions appealing, this approach seems to speak more to the fitness enthusiast who may have crossed over to cycling more recently. With the womens market rapidly growing (CWs womens audience has rocketed during lockdown), this can only be a welcome move.

Speaking about the range, Raphas head of design Maria Olsson said:Together with OV we set out to achieve a positive and inclusive experience for all women who love cycling, and also break down some of the barriers which can be a bit overwhelming.

We wanted to bring everyone along on the journey through the graphics and colours of the range, without compromising on the technical aspects that we are known for.

Heres a look at each of the items:

Rapha/OV shot by Cait Oppermann

This is a lightweight cycling jersey which carries many of the characteristics wed expect. Theres internal taping to keep the pockets from moving around when full, plus a coin pouch and an additional zipped compartment. The see-through rear pocket has been designed for a phone.

The jersey comes in Dark Green, Pale Blue and Terracota.

Rapha/OV shot by Cait Oppermann

Rapha says this is the centrepiece of the collection, and it comes in a terezzo print inspired by the terrain of Mallorca.

The back panel features an overlapped design for breathability, and it comers with full width rear pockets as well as a small pouch for coins. Theres a drop tail, with a reflective speckle pattern.

Excess material was used to make a matching essentials case and this comes in white or multicolour.

Rapha/OV shot by Cait Oppermann

Raphas Cargo bib shorts differentiated themselves from the rest of the market with the additional pockets found on the quads.

The pad shares its DNA with the womens specific model in the Rapha womens Classic shorts.

These come in dark navy with no black option. Theres a full body upper with a cross over back.

Rapha/OV shot by Cait Oppermann

For those not keen on bibs, Rapha and Outdoor Voices have made a high waisted option with a double layer waistband which aims to provide the security of bibs without the toilet break hassle.

These come with a shorter leg length, to ward off embarrassing tan lines just above the knee.

The chamois is the same as the womens pad in Raphas Classic womens shorts.

These come in Dark Green and Dark Navy. The shorts are designed to work alongside theRapha + Outdoor Voices Cropped T-Shirt, which is made from 100 per cent cotton and comes in lilac or white.

Rapha/OV shot by Cait Oppermann

Weve got this sports bra on test at the moment. Its a lightweight support option, so not designed for running and jumping but appropriate for lower impact cycling. The aim is to offer a quick drying, wicking fabric, and a cut which supports the cycling position without chafing.

This is an over-the-head option, with no fastening or adjustability. It comes with removable padding which can help hide those smuggling peanuts when the temperature drops at the top of climbs.

This comes inDark Green and Pale Blue.

Rapha/OV shot by Cait Oppermann

As the popularity of gravel riding increases, this bar bag can clip over the handlebars but it can also swing over the shoulder and be worn as a handbag when off the bike.

Weve got one of these on test, too. Theres tons of space and pockets included, and the attachment is sturdy, though the size means youd want to add some soft items like a packable to bulk it out and prevent the likes of pumps and multi tools from jingling noisily.

"Now Is the Time": These WNBA Players Are Opting Out of a Season to Fight For Racial Justice – POPSUGAR

The WNBA season is set to start in late July, but at least three players will be opting out and using their time to fight for racial justice.

Minnesota Lynx forward Maya Moore, Atlanta Dream guard Renee Montgomery, and Washington Mystics guard Natasha Cloud have all spoken out about their decisions to sit out the 2020 season to focus on social reform. It will be the second straight season missed by Moore, considered to be one of the most accomplished basketball players of all time, who has focused her efforts on criminal justice reform. Cloud and Montgomery have both come forward in the last week to announce their own decisions. "I have a responsibility to myself, to my community and to my future children to fight for something that is much bigger than myself and the game of basketball," Cloud (above) said in a statement.

During discussions on the WNBA's return, players were wary of starting play during a pandemic and in a moment where social justice issues are at the forefront, and many expressed a desire to focus on reform, ESPN reported. "Amplifying the voices of our players is really important," said WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert. "They do it all year round, and I think they can use this opportunity to be together to enhance what they're doing. We're going to work with them on that and support them in it."

"The league has said to us, 'You guys are at the wheel; whatever you want to do, we're going to try to make it happen,'" said Chiney Ogwumike, LA Sparks power forward and vice president of the WNBA Players' Association, in an interview with ESPN. Other WNBA players have opted out due to pandemic-related health concerns. Some stars, including Ogwumike and Seattle Storm guard Sue Bird, are planning to play but have used their platforms to support the Black Lives Matter movement.

Read more on Moore, Montgomery, and Cloud's decisions ahead.
