As CN services and programs slowly reopen after being limited because of the COVID-19 pandemic, several alterations had to be made for those services and programs to continue helping CN citizens.
Wings offers health education, nutrition and physical activity opportunities such as 5K runs and walks.
While most 5K races were scheduled to begin in March, Public Health officials had to re-evaluate how participants were able to race because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention prohibited large group gatherings and advocated social distancing.
We canceled all of our community events up until June, so that meant any of our programs that we were having, Public Health Supervisor Hillary Mead said. When June came and we started opening back up a little bit, we came together as a team and started to work on a plan of what we can do, and how can we involve our community and try to offer some of the same programs that we had before.
One idea was to have virtual races. Wings participants could run on their own, wherever they were located, and submit their times.
Our first one will be July 4. Anybody can participate. It runs from July 4 and then it goes until the following Saturday, which is July 11, Mead said. So theyll have a week to run that race. What theyll do is run the race and then theyll submit their time. Everything is online. They can submit their time through text message or on the website. Once they do that we will send them a T-shirt for participating in that race.
Participants can submit race information to http://www.runsignup.com.
You can run anywhere. You dont necessarily have to run the course. With each registration, weve posted their courses but you do not have to do that, you can run anywhere. But you just have to submit your time, she said.
As of publication, four races were scheduled for July and August. Mead said they would re-evaluate again if it is safe to schedule community races as they did before the COVID-19 pandemic occurred.
Well go from there to figure out if were going to continue virtual races for the rest of our races or if they might be able to meet, she said. Again, were going to be following CDC guidelines and watching our social distance and making sure were not gathering in large groups when its not safe.
Scheduled races include the Huckleberry Run for July 4-11, Happy Hills Run for July 18-25, Lake Vian Trail Run for Aug. 1-8, and Isaiah Sapp Memorial Run for Aug. 15-22.
Public Health is also starting online tobacco cessation classes and online walking groups for interested participants. For information and updates, visit the CN Healthy Nation Facebook page, http://www.cherokeepublichealth.org or call 918-453-5000, ext. 7691.

"Fitness has Nothing to Do with Fatness": Teen Athletes Speak Out about Body Positivity – Morning Chalk Up
"Fitness has Nothing to Do with Fatness": Teen Athletes Speak Out about Body Positivity | Morning Chalk Up
If the older generations looked to magazines like Vogue and Cosmopolitan to see prevailing beauty standards, teens today have a guide to the model body, how to (unhealthily) achieve it, and their self-worth if they cant, in their pockets all day, with no escape. Social media. Its flooded with get-fit-quick schemes, detox teas, and photoshop, and its no secret that the perfected bodies teens see on Instagram are a major prompter for eating disorders and body image issues. And while teen CrossFitters probably arent obsessed with fashion models like their peers, the people they see as they scroll do create a high standard that can be just as destructive.
17-year-old Emma Spath knows the consequences of this new cultural touchpoint particularly well. Spath qualified for the 2018 CrossFit Games in the 14-15 division, years after setting her mind on getting to the Games when gymmate Brooke Ence earned a trip in 2015.
In the 2017 Age Group Online Qualifier, 14-year-old Spath placed 36 worldwide, just 16 spots out of the Games. So when the 2018 Open and AGOQ rolled around, she came out with a vengeance and ambition that seemed to surprise even her.
Spath recalled deleting social media, advising her friends not to talk to her, and avoiding the leaderboard in order to stay focused during the weekend of the Qualifier. And in the end, it paid off. Spath placed 18 in the AGOQ in 2018, punching her ticket to Madison. After scores had been finalized the Wednesday after the AGOQ, Spath got the good news surrounded by her favorite people.
As the school year finished up and Spath looked down the barrel of a summer full of training, she took on a new challenge to up her game counting macronutrients. According to Spath, though, her motivations werent in the right place.
As her drive to be taken seriously as a Games athlete grew throughout the summer, Spath fell into a cycle of restricting and binging, resulting in a Binge Eating Disorder. For the month leading up to the Games, Spath moved to Idaho to live with her coach so she could focus on training with other competitors. As a result of the intensity of her training and restrictive eating, Spath recalls her body constantly telling her to give me food! which led her to repeatedly binge eat.
When the Games finally came around, Spath remembers being too stressed about the food she was eating, how her body looked, and what people thought of her to really take in the few days of glory she had worked for years to earn. And while Spath does remember the many happy moments from the Games, like meeting other like-minded teens that made her feel less isolated, a surprise visit from her grandparents, and the workouts, she says her anxiety about her body and food tainted the experience.
When Spath returned home from Madison though, she slowly started to recognize the toxicity of her relationship with food and began her journey of recovery. Which, over the past 20 months since the 2018 Games, has led her to become an outspoken advocate for self-love and body positivity in (and out of) the CrossFit space.
Unfortunately, Spath is joined by many other teen CrossFit athletes that are also struggling with different phases of eating disorders, body dysmorphia, and other body image issues. Spath said that because she doesnt have the typical, perfect body type that you see on social media, she used her platform to prove that fitness has nothing to do with fatness.
Andersson recalls struggling with body image issues since she was as young as eight-years-old, and always having her current daily calorie count in her head since.
When she traveled from Sweden to Madison last summer, Andersson felt different than the other athletes, and wouldnt take her shirt off, even after a tough workout. And while 16-year-old Andersson does appreciate that her goals as a Games athlete require a different body type than that of the Victorias Secret models, she does believe that some big-name Games athletes can create just as much toxicity.
In an interview with the Morning Chalk Up, Spath said she believes the toxic culture surrounding food in CrossFit is more a result of social media. But sometimes, when the two come together, it can be ever more calamitous. For example, when three-time Games athlete Sheila Barden posted an ab-pic on Instagram in 2019, people were furious.
To many teen athletes, Bardens message of eat less, go to bed hungry, burn more than you consume was heartbreaking and wrong, Spath among them. Diet-culture opponents were quick to sound off in the comments, sharing messages of disappointment for Barden and encouragement for girls going through these struggles.
But, of course, there are other girls who have been saved by CrossFit. Among them are Delia Moises and Karis Jackson, two tough 14-15 competitors placing 20th and 70th respectively in the 2020 AGOQ. Like many of their peers, theyve been competitive athletes in a variety of sports volleyball, cross country, and track and were driven by an urge to look skinnier. Both Moises and Jackson developed eating disorders, restricting their calories to extreme amounts, still never satisfied with their bodies.
Jackson was struggling just like Moises, and when she saw the 2017 CrossFit Games documentary, The Redeemed and the Dominant, she knew that was her way out. Jackson was eating as few as 600 calories a day, but when CrossFit came into her life, she slowly but surely grew with her body image and eating habits.
And so while CrossFit is most certainly healing some young athletes as they grow up and navigate a new world of social media and body comparisons, the issues that athletes like Emma Spath have faced are prevalent and concerning.

The fitness trends that are going to be big after Covid-19 – Metro.co.uk
HIIT, yoga and live stream sessions are going to be big (Picture: Getty)
Fitness fans have had to be extremely adaptable during lockdown. No gyms, no classes, no group training the way we work out has changed drastically over the last few months.
While plenty of us are chomping at the bit to get back in the gym it also looks like we are going to be sticking to some of our new fitness habits, even when lockdown ends.
Reebokhealth experts have predicted the top fitness trends that are going to be all the rage post lockdown.
So read up and get prepared for the new normal of fitness and decide which trends youre going to jump on over the next few weeks.
Virtual workouts are perfect for getting sweat session without leaving your house great for while gyms are still closed, and also for more flexible lifestyles in the future.
Virtual workouts allow you to exercise at anytime time of the day, which is a big benefit for people who work erratic hours, or have jammed schedules.
The majority of people have adapted smoothly to virtual training, says George Pearse, Personal Trainer atFresh Fit London.
Armed with no more than a couple of dumbbells, perhaps a kettlebell and some bands, people have been enjoying new ways of training outside of the big lifts.
Were all going to need to take good care of our mental health as we emerge into our new normal, and yoga is fantastic for that.
Yoga has long been renowned for its health benefits, increasing flexibility, strength and tone, so its no wonder it has become a staple for so many during lockdown.
Over the past few months, yoga has increased in popularity even more as people have had a massive shift in their working patterns and with more people working from home, comments Joe Mitton, Personal Trainer at MittFit.
People are spending an abundance of time sat behind a computer and yoga is the perfect remedy for stiffness and tech neck.
Experts believe that we will come to rely on yoga more as we start to incorporate mental wellness into our fitness regimes.
Bodyweight training and running have been peoples favoured ways of training this past seven weeks, but yoga will continue to grow in popularity as people explore new, exciting methods of moving their bodies and calming their minds, says George Pearse, Personal Trainer at Fresh Fit London.
Weve all been starved of human contact during lockdown, so it is unsurprising that we will flock to training in groups as soon as we get the chance
The lockdown has brought people together into fitness communities like never before and I think there will be a surge in people continuing with group training whether it be online or offline, says Joe Mitton Personal Trainer atMittFit.
With gyms and indoor group sessions closed, personal training and boot camps in parks will see a big boom this year, as will small private studios and virtual one-to-one sessions, adds Keith McNiven.
People have been really keen to keep training, despite the gym being out of bounds.
People have a strong need to keep moving, even if its not in the same way they were doing before.
This raises interesting questions on the other side of lockdown will people want to rush back to the gym floor?
Experts believe that the customer is going to be a bit more discerning on the other side.
Peoplewill miss the gym, but the fact that they are adjusting so well to having intense, effective workouts at home and outside will change the mindset for many, says Keith McNiven, personal trainer and founder of Zone Body Fit.
Plus, it will be a while before they feel safe in gyms again.
For gym-goers who felt apprehensive at the idea of exercising in a large group class, live, online classes are an excellent way of building confidence in a more private environment.
The rise of Instagram live sessions has seen the public exposed to a huge range of different options, says Personal Trainer George Pearse, at Fresh Fit London.
While you arent physically sweating side-by-side on the mats with other people, it doesnt mean workout together is not possible in quarantine. Even streaming by yourself, you feel as though youre working out with others.
High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has been revealed as the most popular fitness trend during lockdownwith a 58% global increase in online articles during lockdown.
Joe Mitton, Personal Trainer atMittFitsays; Lots of people are seeing the benefits of HIIT workouts and the ease of doing them from home combined with the abundance of great trainers offering incredible daily workouts across the world.
The soar in popularity will continue post-lockdown now that people have seen the benefit and created the habits.
Physiotherapist, Emma James reveals that there has been a sharp increase in HIIT and cardio classes online.
There will be a shift in how people exercise moving forward in a positive way, as exercising virtually helps to break down the barriers and fears that some people have about exercising in front of others.

The business of keeping fit – Time Out
Tell us about your experience in the last few months during the peak of COVID-19 in Hong Kong.
From having to adapt to a stay-at-home order for two weeks due to travelling overseas, to then having to close our gym temporarily, its been interesting to say the least! It was a blessing for my training, as I got more time to sleep, eat, work, train, repeat! Although, adjusting to working online was tough, coming from a business where face-to-face interaction is everything. I missed the sense of community at Coastal Fitness.
Time away from the gym made you more resourceful and resulted in the creation of the Earned Aqua Bag, how did that come about?
While there are many exercises you can do with just your bodyweight and household items, people still craved the resistance and load normally found in a dumbbell or barbell and plates. With theAqua Bag, we've created something that weighs 37kg, and is also easy to carry around, set up, train with, then pack back down. There are different ways to use the Aqua Bag, different squatting, pressing and rowing variations. Its designed to be used anywhere: parks, beaches, at home, at the gym and even on holiday. I'm looking forward to taking mine to the beach next time I'm in Bali!
With Hong Kong currently well into recovery before many parts of the world, what does that mean for you as a competitive athlete?
Unfortunately with COVID still causing havoc around the world, my CrossFit games season has come to a premature end. That being said, every cloud has a silver lining. While Im upset about being unable to showcase my hard work over the past 12 months, I'm also grateful that Im able to work on my craft even more. I'm looking forward to getting back out on the competition floor, wherever and whenever that may be.

The SMART Method is Here to Make Your Workout Goals Way More Achievable – Well+Good
Despite what some Instagram memes may tell you, reaching your fitness goals is easier said than doneespecially if you dont have a game plan for achieving them. While most of us have a vague idea of what we want from our workouts, like more energy or improved heart health, it can sometimes be hard to translate the vision to a tangible exercise plan. But as it turns out, a technique from the business world is one of the best ways to sharpen your intentions and get the most out of your workouts: setting SMART goals.
According to career education platform Mind Tools, the acronym SMART can help you clarify your ideas, focus your efforts, use your time and resources productively, and increase your chances of achieving what you want in life. But whatare SMART goals, you ask?The acronym SMART has several slightly different meanings, depending on the source. But in a 2002 paper, management professor Robert S. Rubin said its most commonly interpreted as the following: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. When you apply each of those criteria to your workout goals, youre better able to nail down exactly what you want to get out of your sweat sessions.
Lets take my goal, for example. I want to work out at least 6 days a week in order to increase my energy, decrease stress and anxiety, and get stronger by doing a combination of HIIT, Pilates, and hiking. While I could just say that and hope for the best, heres what it looks like when I break it down SMART-style:
Instead of setting a general goal to simply work out more (something Ive had many times!), taking the time to clarify everything and set a check-in date gives me a better chance of reaching my goal. Research shows that one of the main reasons why people dont achieve their goals is that theyre not specific (or challenging!) enough and theres no planning involved. Its also important to have a whysomething that fuels you to achieve your goal. After breaking down my workout goal with SMART, I can see that I have all of the above.
When you create SMART goals and really dig into them step-by-step, youll have a clearer vision of how to make it happen and therefore be better able to see it through. Now, please excuse me because its time to lace up my sneakers and get to work. I have a goal to reach, after all.

Fitness: Definition, factors, and types
Maintaining a good level of physical fitness is something that we should all aspire to do. But it can be difficult to determine what fitness entails. Here we answer the question: what does being physically fit mean?
According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, physical fitness is defined as a set of attributes that people have or achieve that relates to the ability to perform physical activity.
This description goes beyond being able to run fast or lift heavy weights. Despite being important, these attributes only address single areas of fitness. This article provides details of the five main components of physical fitness.
Being physically fit depends on how well a person fulfills each of the components of being healthful.
When it comes to fitness, these components include
So, you can tell if someone is physically fit by determining how well they perform in each component.
Here we will look at them all individually.
Cardiorespiratory endurance indicates how well our body can supply fuel during physical activity via the bodys circulatory and respiratory systems. Activities that help improve cardiorespiratory endurance are those that cause an elevated heart rate for a sustained period.
These activities include:
People who regularly take part in these activities are more likely to be physically fit in terms of cardiorespiratory endurance. It is important to begin these activities slowly and gradually increase the intensity.
Exercising increases cardiorespiratory endurance in a number of ways. The heart muscle is strengthened so that it is able to pump more blood per heartbeat.
At the same time, additional small arteries are grown within muscle tissue so that blood can be delivered to working muscles more effectively when needed.
The heart changes and improves its efficiency after persistent training. However, more recent research shows that different types of activity change the heart in subtly different ways.
All types of exercise increase the hearts overall size, but there are significant differences between endurance athletes, like rowers, and strength athletes, like football players. Endurance athletes hearts show expanded left and right ventricles, whereas strength athletes show thickening of their heart wall, particularly the left ventricle.
While the heart steadily strengthens over time, the respiratory system does not adjust to the same degree. Lung function does not drastically change, but oxygen that is taken in by the lungs is used more effectively.
In general, exercise encourages the body to become more efficient at taking on, distributing, and using oxygen. This improvement, over time, increases endurance and overall health.
The American College of Sports Medicine recommends aerobic exercise 3-5 times per week for 30-60 minutes, at an intensity that keeps the heart rate at 65-85 percent of the maximum heart rate.
Cardiorespiratory fitness has been found to help reduce the risk of conditions including:
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services defines muscular strength as the ability of muscle to exert force during an activity.
There are a number of ways to measure muscular strength. Generally, lifting or pushing something of a set weight in a prescribed position and comparing the results against any given population is the best way.
In general, if a muscle is worked consistently and regularly, it will increase in strength. There are various ways of putting your muscles through rigorous activity, but anything that works a muscle until it is tired will increase muscle strength over time.
Muscles consist of elongated muscle cells. Each muscle cell contains contractile proteins actin and myosin that give the muscle its strength. These fibers contract together, producing the so-called power stroke. The total force depends on the number of these units contracting in unison.
To build muscle, the following criteria must be met:
The exact mechanism of muscle building is not fully understood, but the general principles are well known. Training causes the muscle cells to expand and there is an increase in actin and myosin production.
Also, in untrained muscles, fibers tend to fire in an asynchronous manner in other words, they do not fire in unison. As they become trained, they learn to fire together as one, increasing maximum power output.
Normally, the body prevents the muscles from over-exerting themselves and becoming injured. As the muscle is trained, the body starts to disinhibit the muscles activation more power is allowed to be exerted.
Fitness can include muscular endurance, which is the ability of a muscle to continue exerting force without tiring. As mentioned above, strength training builds bigger muscles. Endurance training, on the other hand, does not necessarily generate muscles of a larger size.
This is because the body focuses more on the cardiovascular system, ensuring that the muscles receive the oxygenated blood they need to keep functioning. Another important change in muscles that are specifically trained for endurance concerns the different types of muscle tissue fast twitch and slow twitch fibers:
Fast twitch fibers contract quickly but get tired quickly. They use a lot of energy and are useful for sprints. They are whitish in color as they do not require blood to function.
Slow twitch fibers best for endurance work, they can carry out tasks without getting tired. They are found in core muscles. These fibers appear red as they rely on a good supply of oxygenated blood and contain stores of myoglobin.
Different exercises will promote fast twitch fibers, slow twitch fibers, or both. A sprinter will have comparatively more fast twitch fibers, whereas a long distance runner will have more slow twitch fibers.
Body composition measures the relative amounts of muscle, bone, water, and fat.
An individual can potentially maintain the same weight but radically change the ratio of each of the components that make up the body.
For instance, people with a high muscle (lean mass) ratio weigh more than those with the same height and waist circumference who have less muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat.
These measurements of body fat content were taken from high-level sportsmen and women of different disciplines:
Caclulating body composition accurately can be a painstaking task. There are a number of accurate methods, this is just one:
First, weight is measured on standard scales. Next, volume is measured by submerging the individual in water and measuring the displacement.
The proportions of water, protein, and mineral in the body can be ascertained by various chemical and radiometric tests. The densities of water, fat, protein, and mineral are either measured or estimated.
The numbers are then entered into the following equation:
1/Db = w/Dw + f/Df + p/Dp + m/Dm
Where: Db = overall body density, w = proportion of water, f = proportion of fat, p = proportion of protein, m = proportion of mineral, Dw = density of water, Df = density of fat, Dp = density of protein, Dm = density of mineral.
Other methods include dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, air displacement plethysmography, bioelectrical impedance analysis, total body imaging (MRI and CT), and ultrasound.
Flexibility is the range of movement across a joint. Flexibility is important because it improves the ability to link movements together smoothly and can help prevent injuries. Flexibility is specific to each joint and depends on a number of variables, including the tightness of ligaments and tendons.
Flexibility is increased by various activities, all designed to stretch joints, ligaments, and tendons. There are three types of exercise that are generally utilized to increase flexibility:
There are a number of ways to improve flexibility. A daily stretching regimen can be the simplest and most efficient way of achieving whole body flexibility.
In general, fitness means different things to different people. The important take-home message is that embarking on any regular exercise will be of benefit to your health. The more exercise that is carried out, the healthier an individual will look and feel.

When is Planet Fitness reopening in New Jersey?
New Jersey gyms and fitness centers have been closed since mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The state shifted into Stage 2 of Gov. Phil Murphys multi-phased reopening plan on Monday, for which amongst other changes restaurants and bars were allowed to reopen for outdoor dining and nonessential retail stores for shopping at 50% capacity. Stage 2 will further progress this coming Monday, upon which date hair salons and other personal care businesses are permitted to resume operations.
Gyms and fitness centers are also expected to reopen in Stage 2, although the governor has not made an announcement on dates or restrictions. He stated during his coronavirus press briefing on Tuesday that reopening indoor spaces is harder especially because a second wave of the coronavirus is likely inevitable.
If you bat 1,000, this virus, by its very nature, is going to come back, Gov. Murphy said.
According a message posted on Planet Fitnesss website, team members are conducting regular and thorough cleaning of all equipment, surfaces, and areas of the gym. In addition, several changes will be implemented at each club upon its reopening, including checking the temperatures of team members when they arrive to work each day, 20-minute walk arounds performed by the gyms staff to continually clean and sanitize high-touch areas, and the banning of the use of certain pieces of cardio equipment to create additional distance between members.
Moreover, all members are encouraged to download the Planet Fitness mobile app to allow for a touchless check-in process upon their gyms reopening.
As our locations begin to reopen, nothing is more important than your health, and the health of our staff, Chris Rondeau, the CEO of Planet Fitness, said in a video posted alongside the message. Thats why were taking a thoughtful, phased approach based on local official guidelines.
