Brick to Use Haven’s Farm Property to Help Fitness Businesses Open Outdoors – Shorebeat
Havens Homestead, Brick, N.J. (Photo: Daniel Nee)
Brick is freeing up space for exercise and fitness businesses to temporarily move their enterprises outdoors to comply with state regulations that prevent them from operating indoors.
Havens Farm is located on several acres off Hebertsville Road, adjacent to the Havens Homestead museum and related properties. Under the townships plan, businesses will apply for a permit to conduct activities such as exercise classes, dance classes, yoga or similar at the farm.
This location has ample parking, theres a natural buffer for residential properties and the area can be split into four different fields, said Mayor John Ducey, who proposed the plan to the township council after reading e-mails from struggling business owners.
We asked for businesses to let us know how we could help them open quicker and with more capacity, and I did get a number of e-mails from business owners about having exercise classes, dance classes and things like that at our parks, said Ducey.
Because of the breadth of space, available parking and distance from residential homes, Havens Farm was the ideal choice, the mayor said. While businesses can also use their parking lots for such activities, some do not have the space to do so.
If theyre sharing a parking lot, its difficult for them, said Ducey.
The township council earlier this week voted unanimously to allow businesses to apply for time and space at the farm property. Businesses will need an insurance certificate and follow social distancing guidelines set by the state to control the spread of coronavirus.
We want to make sure these businesses can open, said Ducey. Were doing what we can here locally; the governor is just going way too slow for myself and, I think, for most business owners.
Businesses can apply the same way they would apply to use a park or any other location for a special event.

Working Out While Working From Home: Inside The Advertising Industry’s Fitness Routines – AdExchanger
If you hear heavy breathing when someone unmutes themselves on a conference call it could be because theyre also riding on their Peloton.
Dont try to beat any distance records during a meeting, warned Emily Adams, an ad tech PR freelancer and Peloton devotee who will sometimes ride during calls.
I learned this lesson after being called on unexpectedly during a client meeting and was so winded, I had to mute myself between every sentence to catch my breath.
Adams is one of the many workout devotees in the ad industry who are finding creative ways to squeeze in workouts as the months of quarantine drag on.
During one long agency all-hands meeting, Adams rode 10 miles. For small meetings, though, Adams always gives the other attendees a heads up when shes doing a workout. And she finds people are more understanding of athletic multitasking now than pre-pandemic. Be honest! she advised. Trying to hide it makes you more out of breath.
Internal update calls are a popular time for Fyber Chief Revenue Officer David Simon to squeeze in a workout but always with the video off.
Nobody needs to see a gross sweaty version of me, Simon joked. During cross-training exercises, he looks more presentable, so he feels comfortable keeping the camera on. Ive also been known to use resistance bands during video calls, he said.
But not everyone mixes work with working out. Early morning or afternoon Zwift rides are the norm for Rebel AI CEO and founder Manny Puentes, a devotee of the hardcore cycling setup where a real bike is hooked up to a smart trainer.
But because hes working from home, Puentes will often go straight into conference calls after completing a ride, skipping his shower and staying in his sweaty clothes while he works. Thats probably the biggest fail, he confessed.
Virtual workouts as networking
Early in the pandemic, TripleLift CEO Eric Berry attempted a Peloton video conference with a friend in the industry but was not impressed with the experience.
Berry and the other rider spent most of their time catching their breath rather than having a chance to properly chat. Hes had other clients request Peloton meetings since then and remains unimpressed.
Along with a live video closeup of your clients sweaty and blurry chin on video conference, the competition feature where you can see each others score makes for uncomfortable mismatches in ability which can make both sides feel bad about themselves, Berry said.
I could not have designed something more awkward, he said.
But when the main purpose is the workout itself, riding buddies can enjoy virtual sessions together. Early in the quarantine, for example, Rebel AIs Puentes met with fellow cycling devotee and SpotX COO Sean Buckley for 5:30 am Zwift sessions.
Zwift fills the void of not being able to exercise outdoors and adhering to social distancing, Puentes said. Typical trainers can be pretty boring; you're not riding with anyone else, or talking, so this is more interactive.
People in the ad industry have also found each other and joined groups on social workout apps, such as Peloton and Strava. On top of working out during meetings, Fybers Simon participates in an ad industry Peloton group. He rides with others in the industry and can keep up to date on their stats and favorite types of rides and instructors whether or not theyre all riding together.
To help foster a community around working out, MarketMakers LCC, a marketing advisory firm known for organizing 5k runs during industry conferences, including Cannes, launched a virtual networking and exercising program during the pandemic that now has more than 100 people. For National Superhero Day in April, the group logged five-mile runs and 25-mile rides to support heroes on the frontlines.
The community that has organically formed around the challenges has been rewarding to watch, said MarketMakers CEO Celeny Da Silva, who herself has been logging miles near the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, where shes sheltering in place.
Coworkers that sweat together, stick together
Group workouts are also starting to catch on as a form of remote team-building exercise.
Because the only thing better than a video call with 30 of your co-workers is a video call with 30 of your colleagues working out right?
Companies including SpotX, Fyber, Kochava and OH Partners have organized group yoga classes, circuit training and meditation sessions in an effort to inspire and motivate their employees during the pandemic. Sometimes theyre taught by professional, outside instructors. Other times, staff step up to the plate.
Social media account exec Huy Nguyen often shares his workouts on Instagram, so it was natural for him to lead a 30-person lunchtime workout of jumping jacks, pushups, planks and dips that brought together different departments.
My favorite part of the workout was when my boss and VP of social/PR, Jason Miller, joined our Zoom to drink a beer in front of everyone ... but failed to get his camera to work for the first 15 minutes of the session, Nguyen recalled.
At Colorado-based SpotX, a group does live F45 HIIT (high-intensity interval training) classes together, while another group of 27 people has embarked on a Sabertooth Fitness nutrition and workout challenge keeping the states reputation for being the fittest in America intact.
But alcohol and working out can mix, as it turns out. Beer yoga draws in employees at Kochava, who have been gathering weekly throughout the pandemic. The companys director of PR, Leslie Amadio, is also a certified yoga teacher, so she leads these sessions for the group.
The question is, what happens to all of these new exercise regimes as the country starts to open back up?
A dozen weeks into quarantine, some people admit to slacking off on their routines, while others hope to emerge from shelter-in-place more healthy and fit than ever.
As summer weather beckons and restrictions loosen in some areas, the Zoom workout may take a brief pause. Even Peloton addict Adams is mixing up her working-while-virtually-pedaling routine.
Now that the weather is warm, she said, there's always the tried-and-true method of walking or running around the block for an afternoon break and mental boost.

By: Lifestyle Desk | New Delhi | Published: June 11, 2020 10:50:49 am Before you step out of the house to exercise, remember the pandemic is still not over, even if lockdown restrictions have eased. (Source: Getty/Thinkstock)
With lockdown restrictions slowly being lifted, people are heaving a sigh of relief. Having to stay locked up inside the house for close to three months, people are slowly but cautiously stepping out to reclaim their lives and return to normalcy. But this is the stage when the scales can tip either way. One must stay extra careful, because the real challenge begins now, with cases still on the rise, and the virus still having a field day.
More than anything else, a lot many people are prioritising their fitness. Without having to go out and do any kind of outdoor physical activity, they may have put on some weight, and to shed that, they are considering stepping out more often now and getting rid of the the extra kilos. But nutritionist and fitness expert Diksha Chhabra warns that even though the lockdown may be lifting, the virus is still pretty much around.

She answers some frequently-asked questions for indianexpress.com, specifically for those who are looking to get fit and in shape.
Even though the lockdown is slowly being lifted, the infection is still very much around. More precautions must be taken at this time, especially by those who have to step out of the house for work. I recommend every one to exercise at home using simple equipment for another two to three months. Going outdoor for a walk or a run can unnecessary expose you to the virus, she says.
So, are there any specific exercises that people can continue doing at home?
They can try strength training which is highly effective and needs no space. Since online deliveries have started, almost all apps are delivering basic equipment like resistance band, dumbbells, home gym sets etc. One should focus on full body training, and with added resistance or free weights, they can get great results in a cost-effective way, she explains.

Avoid human contact outdoors as much possible, and keep a hand sanitizer handy. Avoid touching any kind of surface, too, while you are outdoors.
Physical fitness is incomplete if the diet is not proper; so what does she advise?
Have a well-balanced diet, not just to stay fit, but to boost your immunity, too. Well-balanced diet with all the required nutrients prepares us better to fight against any infection. Clean and sanitized cooking practices, and a balanced meal is the need of the hour, she concludes.

5 Predictions For Wearable Technology: From Fitness Trackers To Humans 2.0 – Forbes
Even if, like me, youve had a fitness tracker or smartwatch for years, you might still be surprised at how well the wearable technology or wearables trend has taken off. What started with Fitbit and the like has now mushroomed into an entire industry of wearables that are designed to help us lead healthier, more efficient lives.
5 Predictions For Wearable Technology: From Fitness Trackers To Humans 2.0
But the revolution wont stop there. I predict that the demand for wearables will evolve into a more seamless blending of humans and technology giving rise to augmented humans or humans 2.0. Is that really where were headed as a species? To answer that question, I look at five eye-opening predictions for the future of wearable technology.
Examples of wearables from the here and now
Fitness trackers may be one of the most recognizable examples of wearables, but lets take a quick look at some other examples:
Smartwatches the Apple Watch and other smartwatches are designed to generally make our lives easier and to monitor our health and activity so that we can make better lifestyle choices. In fact, the quality of health data gathered by these smartwatches is so good; the Apple Watch can reportedly add two years to your life.
Smart clothing the term wearable doesnt just apply to something you strap onto your wrist; it can also extend to intelligent clothing. Take Neviano smart swimsuits as an example. These include a waterproof UV sensor that communicates with your smartphone to tell you when UV levels are high, meaning you should slap on some more sunscreen.
Smart glasses fancy some smart sunglasses to go with your smart beachwear? Youre in luck. Snapchat Spectacles 2.0 come with a built-in camera that allow you to snap photos and videos directly from your glasses. The glasses link to a smartphone, so you can share your photos and videos via the Snapchat app. Of course, whether your fellow beach-goers will welcome the idea of you effectively wearing a camera on your face is another matter
Looking to the future
Let's look at my top five predictions for how the wearables trend will evolve in the future.
Exoskeletons will transform industry
Exoskeletons effectively, robotic suits that humans wear already exist. Theyre used by some manufacturers to help human workers perform better (for example, lift heavier weights without injury). Hyundai Motor Group has been testing its Hyundai Vest Exoskeleton, which helps to reduce pressure on workers necks and backs, in the factory setting. Hyundai says the exoskeletons help to reduce injuries in the workplace and increase worker efficiency. My prediction is exoskeletons like this will become the norm in manufacturing and industrial settings around the world.
Prosthetics will become more intelligent
Wearable technology also encompasses the new wave of prosthetics and robotic limbs currently being developed. These are increasingly being kitted out with technology that enables the limb to become more intuitive for example, by responding to the nervous system or brain signals. MITs Media Lab is involved in a research project that combines special amputation surgery with intuitive prosthetic development. Special robot prosthetics are being designed for ten volunteers, and the hope is the volunteers will be able to operate their prosthetics via the nervous system. In the future, intelligent prosthetics like this, which respond to the individuals commands more intuitively, may become the norm.
Labs will be 3D printing human tissue
If we can create replacement limbs, why shouldnt we create replacement organs? Researchers are already working towards this goal. In one example, a team at Rice University in Houston claims to have made a significant breakthrough in the bioprinting of viable human tissue, giving hope that it will be possible to print fully working replacement organs in the future. This, combined with advances in robotics and prosthetics, could revolutionize the world of medicine. So, if I need a heart transplant in the future, it's feasible that I could be given a choice between a robotic heart or a lab-grown heart.
Say hello to AI for the human brain
Companies like Facebook are racing to develop brain-computer interfaces that could, in theory, allow you to type your Facebook status update using only your mind (telepathic typing, to use the vaguely creepy technical term). Elsewhere, Elon Musks Neuralink company is working on a brain-computer interface that would help people with severe brain injuries. Announcing the plans in 2019, Musk predicted a future in which humans could have the option of merging with AI."
All this could have serious implications for data privacy
Wearable technology already creates a huge amount of data on the wearer, so it stands to reason that the more we embrace wearables, the more data will be available about us. Of course, this begs the question of whether we should want companies like Facebook to know more about us than they already do. Even if were okay with that (and many of us arent), well all need to become much savvier about the data we're forking over to the purveyors of wearable solutions. And the companies offering these solutions will need to make genuine strides in how seriously they take data privacy.
Wearable technology is just one of 25 technology trends that I believe will transform our society. Read more about these key trends including plenty of real-world examples in my new book, Tech Trends in Practice: The 25 Technologies That Are Driving The 4th Industrial Revolution.

Anytime Fitness latest campaign highlights importance of the human – CMO
Celebrating the human and acknowledging changed consumer behaviour been put front and centre in the latest campaign for Anytime Fitness encouraging Australian consumers to get back into the gym.
The Anytime Fitness 24/7 Human campaign launches in NSW this weekend and shines the visual spotlight on members, employees and club owners. Its been produced in partnership with MercerBell and incorporates out-of-home advertising, digital, social, PR and more localised media buys.
The campaign is national but rolling out in line with the reopening of gyms in each state. Gyms in NSW have been given the greenlight to open from tomorrow, 13 June 2020, while gyms in Victoria will reopen the following week.
CMO of Anytime Fitness parent company, Collective Wellness Group, Emily Thompson, said the campaign is very much about celebrating the diversity, expertise and community spirit the fitness brand strives to embody. Its also a big call for consumers to get back into the gym and help the industry recover from the significant impact of COVID-19 pandemic closures over the last three months.
Our industry has been profoundly impacted by COVID-19 but theres a light at the end of the tunnel, Thompson said. Our franchisees and club teams cant wait to welcome members new and old into their gyms, and with this campaign MercerBell has really captured that sentiment.
MercerBell executive creative director, Vaughan Townsend, said the ambition was a campaign that tapped into the Anytime Fitness brand spirit. Elements have also been developed as a form of toolkit enabling Anytime Fitness 500 franchisees the ability to tailor messaging and communications to suit their hyperlocal needs.
Anytime Fitness is a place members go to work out, hang out and be with like-minded people. The new campaign captures this feeling of a 24/7 community and will appeal to new audiences who are looking for something more from their gyms, Townsend said.
The human spirit has very much come to the fore in the face of the COVID-19 crisis, with brands across every category striving to highlight, support and bring an empathetic approach to their marketing in response. From kindness and thank you messages for essential service workers to information communications led by CEOs and operational leaders, marketing campaigns during this time have commonly turned to real people to retain connection with consumers as the crisis progressed.
Now, as we tentatively step towards recovery, recognising how consumer behaviour has changed and shining a spotlight on the human factor is also expected to remain front and centre in brand messaging and campaigns.
MercerBell CEO, Julie Dormand, noted Anytime Fitness has historically positioned itself via the more rational messaging of being a 24/7 gym. But the transformation of consumer behaviour brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic made celebrating the human aspect of what gyms deliver key to the latest campaign.
Normally with our work, wed look at the behaviour we are trying to change. But what we have all been through during this time reflects a massive behaviour change focused on us, as humans, she told CMO.
As soon as we added in the human even the word - and plugged this into the imagery, we could see the role gyms play in our lives. This is about people, and people behaving and engaging in spaces that are important to them.
Dormand pointed out behavioural changes ushered in by COVID-19 will be hugely impactful on the way brands need to engage as we come out of the crisis.
People talk about reverse culture setback and what it is to go back to the new world. We know it wont be the same people know the world they live in has changed and we have different attitudes around how we work and engage. Its significantly shifted, she said.
Thompson argued there wasnt a category of client across the agencys portfolio, from Qantas to AMEX, that hasnt been impacted.
Those who saw a more positive impact from the crisis still experienced that change in behaviour, she added. This is a very rich space, and that behaviour change is coming into every brief we do.

44 people infected at Greenville nursing home; bill would open bars, fitness clubs – Greenville Daily Reflector
State and local health officials reported that 44 people have been infected with COVID-19 in relation to an outbreak at a Greenville nursing home.
The outbreak occurred at East Carolina Rehab and Wellness, 2575 W. Fifth St., according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. A total of 34 residents and 10 staff members tested positive for the virus.
Its unclear when the outbreak began or what is being done to contain it. The Pitt County Health Department referred questions to the nursing home. A manager at the facility on Wednesday declined a request for an interview. Its website on Wednesday was still reporting it had no cases of COVID-19.
The DHHS report of ongoing outbreaks in congregated living settings first reported the outbreak on Tuesday. The report is updated at 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays. The outbreak was not included in Fridays update.
Pitt County saw a spike in COVID cases on Thursday and Friday of last week. Twenty-nine people tested on Thursday were positive for the virus and 23 tested on Friday were positive. The previous one-day high for positive tests was 13 on May 20.
The majority but not all of the positive tests on Thursday and Friday were related to the outbreak, Pitt County Deputy Health Deputy Director Amy Hattem said. Fourteen people also tested positive on Saturday.
The county has seen a significant increase in positive test results in the last week. It reported 56 new cases between Friday and Monday, bringing the cumulative total to 392. That number increased another 30 to 422 by 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
Hattem said the health department is working with the facility to put measures in place to protect the residents and staff.
It is the second outbreak at a nursing facility in Pitt County. Two staff members and one resident were infected at Ayden Court Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in May. After 28 days with no new cases it is no longer considered an outbreak, Hattem said.
The news comes as the state legislature passed another bill Wednesday to overturn parts of Gov. Roy Coopers executive order that keep certain businesses closed to discourage the spread of COVID-19.
As with previous legislation sent to him seeking to reopen bars, Cooper is likely to veto the latest measure, which also ends the shuttering of gyms and fitness clubs.
The House voted on a largely party-line vote of 69-50 in favor of the measure written by Republicans, many of whom have been critical of the Democratic governors slow pace to loosen restrictions on the state economy. It would allow the fitness centers and gyms to reopen indoors at 50% capacity and require they follow social distancing and cleanliness rules.
The bill also contains language from a bill Cooper vetoed last week that would let bars reopen but only outdoors and give restaurants already allowed to serve dine-in customers additional outdoor seating options. Coopers veto message said that bill would make it difficult for his administration and local governments to re-close these industries should there be a surge in cases possibly later this year.
Coopers office didnt immediately comment Wednesday on the new measure that passed the Senate earlier this week and now heads to his desk. But he expressed skepticism about the changes earlier this week, raising the likelihood of another veto.
He has said the extended closings are based on science health officials have said sitting for a long time in bars and intense exercise within indoor gyms make patrons more susceptible to virus infections. But operators of bars and gyms closed since March are pleading to reopen to save their businesses and rehire laid-off workers.
The Senate authors of the new bill said Tuesday they addressed Coopers concerns by giving the governor authority to shut down the establishments under his emergency powers, but only with the agreement of the Council of State.
I believe this bill is a common sense (bill) and a good middle ground, said Rep. Kyle Hall, a Stokes County Republican. I believe this fully addresses the governors concerns.
Some Senate Democrats complained earlier this week that this condition couldnt be met during this pandemic because Republicans compose six of the councils 10 spots, including Lt. Gov. Dan Forest, who is challenging Cooper this fall. House Minority Leader Darren Jackson of Wake County portrayed the measure as a reflection of the beliefs of many Republicans who dont take the pandemic seriously enough.
The latest efforts come as North Carolina reached another all-time high in virus-related hospitalizations on Wednesday at 780. Several hundred intensive care unit beds still remain available in hospitals, however. More than 1,050 people diagnosed with COVID-19 have died.
Yet here we are taking away the ability of our scientists and ability of our public health experts to do something about it, Jackson said while urging his Democratic colleagues to vote no. Four Democrats in the chamber joined all Republicans in voting for the bill, but the final margin signals that bill supporters lack enough votes for an override.
The number of positive cases reported since the pandemic began now exceeds 38,000. State Health and Human Services Secretary Mandy Cohen said Wednesday that her agency was marshaling testing and tracing resources this week to Mecklenburg, Alamance, Wake, Duplin, Johnston, Durham, Forsyth and Lee counties.
The reopen legislation can be viewed as an alternate pathway for bar and gym owners who have sued to attempt to throw out Coopers order as unconstitutional. Theyve been unsuccessful in court so far.
Moore had scheduled a veto override vote for Wednesday on the bar and restaurant measure that Cooper blocked last week. But he took the measure off the calendar, saying he was hopeful that the updated bill with gyms could get stronger support.
