Getting Started on Fall Hunting Fitness – newsdakota.com
Mix up your fitness regimen, as pulling back on a bow string can provide similar resistance as using a dumbbell set. Add fun outdoor activities to the mix such as hiking, biking, running and walks with the dog, to keep things from getting boring and encourage consistency when getting ready for fall hunting seasons. Simonson Photo.
By Nick Simonson
The path to a successful hunt involves a lot of planning.
Whether its hours of country cruising and scouting the local deer herd and their movements in August and September for Novembers glorious capstone to autumn or checking laces and boot leather and getting hundreds of rounds put in at the trap range to be set for that first flushing rooster in October, preparation for whatever game you pursue makes the season more successful. One thing many hunters overlook, however, is the physical preparation which helps make the hills seem less steep and the hauling out of a downed deer feel more like a victory lap and less of a chore.
By starting on the process of getting fit for a hunt now whether youre a weekend warrior who seeks out grouse or pheasants in the grassy expanse of the prairie, or will luck out and draw that coveted mule deer tag or a once-in-a-lifetime elk opportunity that will require some reconnaissance and efforts in the rugged breaks of the west youll be more prepared to take on the challenges this fall. Additionally, the added health benefits and good habits that come with your pre-season physical challenges will help ensure you can keep going into the field season after season.
Goal SettingFor some hunters, the process of preparing for the field or changing their physical activity level may simply mean leaving the couch (or the comfort of that cushy air-ride-equipped boat seat) this summer. For those who are already active, it may mean upping your training regimen to prepare for those rugged hunts in the badlands, or the mountains a bit further the west, depending on your tag allotment for this autumn. For Sarah Newgard, Certified Personal Trainer and Owner-Operator of The Pedal cycling and fitness studio in Grand Forks, while goals should be a focus, its important to remember the reason behind them as well.
I encourage people to write down their goals and then why they want to achieve that, Newgard suggests as the first step to reaching fitness objectives for anyone, including hunters, the why is so important, she stresses, suggesting that a goal of losing 20 pounds is great, but putting the motivation behind it such as being lighter and more in shape for the field helps give it more meaning.
From there, its much like the hunt itself in terms of executing small steps toward the larger goal of tagging a deer or bagging a brace of birds on opening morning. Newgard cautions against running pell-mell at full speed toward a goal, however, especially if youre just starting out. Taking things slow to start and gradually building the physical preparation process and workout intensity is key in preventing soreness, injury and burnout early on.
People think that they have to work out seven days a week for sixty minutes at a time right out of the gate, Newgard states in relation to those who are eager to get going on their fitness journey, instead suggesting, maybe you start with one, two or three days a week, and just be consistent with that for one, two, three weeks before you start adding on; everybody thinks it needs to be this huge, gigantic goal, when really you can start small, and consistency is the key, she concludes.
Make and Keep It FunOne of the biggest challenges of developing a consistent fitness program may be overcoming the drudgery often associated with a set of dumbells or the repetitive whir of a treadmill or elliptical machine. Summer on the northern plains, however, provides an incredible opportunity to get outside and to mix things up and change the scenery. Being sneaky with your fitness activities is a recommendation of Lane Hanzel, Strength Conditioning Specialist at Sanford, Bismarck and avid big game hunter who has taken deer, elk and pronghorn in eight western states.
Find things that you may not think of when building fitness hiking, shed hunting, kayaking and look at what youre doing already that may be able to fall into building your own personal fitness routine, he suggests, adding that being active in any outdoor pursuit that requires motion will help beat the monotony of regular workouts and become a habit and an enjoyable one at that.It is that consistency of being active that will help preserve a level of fitness for future seasons and help prevent any need to start or re-start a regimen each summer to get set for the following fall. With those healthy habits built up and a variety of exercise options available whether traditional weights and cardio at a local gym, or a run or mountain bike ride on a local trail Hanzel suggests a lifetime of successful hunts and outings with less fatigue are more likely, even into a hunters later years.
If they have that elk tag or that mule deer badlands tag they drew and theyre looking at how I am going to get going, the number one thing is, if youre in shape already or you have something youre doing, dont get out of shape, he advises, dont think of it as an eight-week program or a 12-week program, look at it as this is what I do as part of my year-round program; things may change or you might have different goals depending on the year, he continues, suggesting developing a base and maintaining consistency is far better than trying to ramp up ahead of a hunting season.
With these ideas in mind, all sportsmen looking to get fit can adjust their preparation for an upcoming hunt in a manner that is both concrete in goals and execution against them.
Finding fun ways to mix it up and build endurance, strength and flexibility through traditional means and time preparing on the trail or in the field ahead of the hunt helps build a base and create a point to be ready for adventures this fall and in autumns to come.

Here are more than 20 Black-owned gyms in Houston – Houston Chronicle
Felicia Lee-Sexton estimates she will be a month or two behind on rent payments for her gym until at least next year.
The Womens Health and Fitness Center in Stafford shut its doors in late March, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Lee-Sexton received no Paycheck Protection Program loan or government stimulus to keep the business afloat or her trainers on the payroll.
It makes me sad as an African-American entrepreneur of a small business that all the money went to large corporations, which are the last ones that needed money, Lee-Sexton said. I am still reeling from trying to play catch-up; by Gods grace, my landlord is working with me.
On HoustonChronicle.com: Felicia Lee-Sexton builds new life, body years after getting sober
This year has been one tragedy after another, she said. First with the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown, followed by massive unemployment and now with the murder of George Floyd, a native Houstonian, which has sparked days of Black Lives Matter rallies and protests against police brutality across the country.
The women-only gym isnt just about physical fitness. There are weekly Bible studies, monthly therapy sessions with a licensed professional counselor and daily check-ins in a members-only Facebook group and Whatsapp.
Lee-Sexton was reluctant to start streaming workouts on Zoom because of the loss of human contact. But she now understands there are people who may have always wanted to work out but couldnt for a number of reasons, so she will continue to livestream twice a week even when gyms are back to full capacity.
Lee-Sexton will celebrate 27 years of sobrietyon June 16. To her, bodies are temples and require physical strength, as well as mental and spiritual care.
I think we are a praying gym, she said. Its one thing on top of another thing, but we cant lose focus on who we are, what we stand for and keeping ourselves fit mentally and physically.

How Las Vegas gym and fitness operations have changed since reopening – Las Vegas Sun
By Case Keefer (contact)
Thursday, June 4, 2020 | 2 a.m.
The first sign of Happy Hour Fitness and Social Club is visible a half-mile away on a recent Monday morning.
A man in a sweat-soaked gray T-shirt labors down the side of the street as part of a workout-ending run. A few hundred meters away, in a long driveway, a couple lunges through a resistance-band exercise on the hot, black pavement, while another man off to the side pushes a weight sled across a 20-yard patch of turf. More activity rages inside the garage-converted gym in the southwest Valley, as one woman planks in the east corner while two people on the opposite end go through a dumbbell routine.
Christopher DeVargas
Roxanne Lavin reopened Happy Hour Fitness Social Club on June 1, with new cleaning protocols in place.
On the second weekday since Gov. Steve Sisolak permitted gyms to operate again as part of Phase 2 of Nevadas coronavirus reopenings, attendance is strong at Roxanne Lavins private personal training business.
We were busy right from the second we opened back up, Lavin says between squat sets. I think clients were anxious to get back.
Lavin stays in constant motion, coaching clients through five circuits and probably inhaling a liters worth of disinfectant from 5:30-9 a.m., when Happy Hour is open for morning sessions. Not only has she amassed her own armory of Lysol spray, Clorox wipes and hand sanitizer, but she also now requires all members to bring their own supplies to clean stations every eight minutes before moving on to the next portion of the workout.
From small, locally owned training businesses to corporate-run gyms, the workout experience will likely look this way around the Valley for the next several months. Theyre all doing their best to comply with the states new requirements, which include strict social distancing, a 50% occupancy limit and rigorous sanitization.
Weve been working night and day, and through the weekends, to make sure we have the right training and content for our team members and customers, says Kevin Siegel, vice president of member experience at Life Time Athletic. Weve invested heavily in cleaning and socially distancing at our clubs with EPA hospital-grade disinfectants and signage. Were giving the safest and best experience to our customers.
Life Time reopens its two local locations, in Henderson and Summerlin, on June 4, a few days later than chains like Las Vegas Athletic Clubs, which restarted May 30, and EoS Fitness, which reopened June 1. Siegel, whos based out of Henderson, says the company might have waited even longer had it not been for feedback from local customers indicating they wanted access to the gyms as soon as possible.
Life Times corporate office sent out an email to members with videos detailing its new safety plans and a survey asking when they wanted gyms to reopen. Las Vegas had the highest confidence of that survey of members ready to come back, Siegel says. We had an overwhelming response once our customers saw our cleaning protocols and standards.
Lavin reports the same level of eagerness, estimating she has seen 75% of her clients in person since it has been permitted. The other quarter still feel more comfortable receiving online coaching. On-demand video training sessions became the focus of fitness brands like Life Time during quarantine and will continue to be available to those who prefer working out at home.
We were heavily in the creation process before the closures, but we were able to speed it up very fast and deploy that to our customers and offer complimentary streaming during the closures, Siegel says. We had more than a million views in the first 30 days, which was exceptional. We had no idea what the market was, and now were going to continue to invest in that space and offer great content to our customers going forward.
In statements, both Life Time and LVAC explained that they didnt foresee the 50% maximum occupancy guideline being a problem, because their clubs are so large and rarely reached that threshold pre-pandemic. To help stave off overcrowding, theyve released timeline data that was previously kept private.
Members can now look up graphs charting the busiest and slowest times throughout the week to plan their workouts. Smaller businesses like Lavins are finding other ways to space out foot traffic. She has expanded her availability by an hour and has moved to more flexible start times, allowing clients to stop in at their leisure.
Ive given them a longer time frame to come in, and it works out perfectly because the people who come late stagger themselves from the people who are early, Lavin says. Ive had to structure my workouts differently to allow time at different stations, so we have time to clean those stations before the next. Its changed the way I program for sure, but its given me a better flow.
Masks are optional at gyms under state protocols, but none of the 10-12 people who cycled into Happy Hour over a 90-minute period wore them. They will be available for sale at a nominal charge for members at Life Time and LVAC, with both companies requiring employees to wear them at all times.
Operators are acting with a great deal of caution in returning, and patrons appear excited to get back in the gym.
Because everyone wanted to come back so badly, theyve been willing to do whatever compliance theyve needed to do, Lavin says. I think they realize with all the things going on, taking care of yourself and taking care of your health is by far the most important thing. Yes, you can wear a mask or gloves and sanitize, but if youre not healthy overall, theres always going to be that underlying fear, more so than someone whos really focused on staying healthy and staying in shape.

Health & Fitness app downloads surged in Q2 2020 with Strava leading the pack – PhoneArena
Analytics firmSensor Tower's estimates show that Health & Fitness app downloads reached unprecedented levels for Q2 in the second quarter of 2020. In simpler words, never before has the increase been so great year-on-year between two consecutive second quarters.
Typically, January is the month whenHealth & Fitness app installs spike. This year would probably have been the same if the coronavirus had not struck.
Sensor Tower reports that downloads began declining in February, as is the trend. However, an uptick was seen in March, that continued into April. Overall, theHealth & Fitness category saw a year-over-year increase of 47 percent in Q2 2020, reaching 656 million downloads. The final figure will be higher, given that the second quarter has not ended yet.
Surprisingly, revenue growth was just 13 percent during the quarter when compared to the same time last year. In contrast, sales grew 47 percent year-over-year in Q2 2019, and 76 percent in Q2 2018. However, with a month still remaining, there is still an opportunity for app makers to boost revenue.
Sensor Tower adds that downloads peaked in April, reaching339.7 million, an increase of nearly 84 percent when compared to January. Revenue-wise, May overshadowed April, bringing in spending worth $160.5million, up 14.5 percent from January.
With gyms and fitness centers shuttered amid the coronavirus, people are increasingly turning to indoor activities and home workouts to stay in shape. Health & Fitness apps make it easier to track health-related metrics and access exercise resources. Thus, it is easy to see why the category has increased in popularity.

Top 3 mistakes that are harming your fitness goals – The Bridge
Diet and exercise are the surefire way for any persons goal related to weight loss, weight gain, building strength and muscle. However its not all that is required to make progress. Here are 3 of many important factors that could possibly do more harm than good to your hard earned progress.
Sleep is very important for everyone, more so for an athlete or people leading active lifestyles. Sleep is a period of rest for physical and mental well being. Most major body functions do not occur during this moment and muscle repair takes place from the food that has been consumed. So strength and size are actually gained with a good nights sleep, contrary to pumping iron in the gym. Giving the muscles a good nights rest will also result in decreased soreness in the muscles, so the day after wont be as tiring.
Sleep is very important for everyone, more so for an athlete or people leading active lifestyles (Source: The Statesman)
Stress is synonymous among most urban individuals today. From children attending schools to CEOs of giant corporations, everyone faces stress. Stress results in secretion of a hormone called Cortisol. Exercise does cause stress, especially High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workouts and endurance training however it causes acute stress i.e. the effects wont be long lasting. Stress from work or personal life for an extended period of time can result in fatigue, weight gain and possibly other mental health issues that may damage progress in a persons fitness journey.

People who are new to implementing fitness as a part of their daily regimen as well as experienced athletes may push harder than their body is capable of. No Pain No Gain is a good phrase for motivation but it may become an issue if an individual might push themselves beyond their capacity. It could possibly lead in injury, additional stress or other health problems.
The solution to these issues is quite simple, though adapting to these changes may take a little time.
Arnold Schwarzenegger once gave a motivational speech where time management and hard work were the core topics. He mentioned that in his days of competing, he had to study, exercise and work and sleep for six hours. When he was told that most people need 8 hours of sleep, he simply replied Sleep faster. While this may be good motivation, it is not a sustainable long time plan. Arnold is among the 1% of people who have a genetic mutation that results in heightened awakening and shorter sleep period, without memory fog or the associated side effects from sleep deprivation. For the common man, an organized schedule may help in planning the day better, allowing for the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep for good physical and mental health.

Research studies have shown that aerobic exercise could help reduce stress in patients suffering from blood pressure issues. Yoga has also been prescribed in certain cases, which allows for physical as well as mental exercise. Such forms of low intensity exercises coupled with a good diet may aid weight loss and improved mental health.
In order to avoid overtraining, a personal trainer or instructor can help in planning a good exercise regimen along with spotting mistakes and giving essential feedback to improve next time. Trainers are qualified professionals who can help a person achieve the best results in a time efficient manner.
These are among some of the many problems that might be hampering a persons journey to their fitness goals, but even small changes can result in bigger progress.

Body in zombie mode, will need 4 weeks to achieve match fitness: Dinesh Karthik – The Indian Express
By: PTI | New Delhi | Updated: June 6, 2020 9:41:49 pm Kolkata Knight Riders captain Dinesh Karthik (File Photo/PTI)
Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik said lack of activity due to the coronavirus-forced lockdown has put the body in a zombie mode and it will take at least four weeks for players to achieve match-fitness.
Karthik said the cricketers will have to gradually increase the intensity after resuming training.
I think the transition will be very tough. I think at least a minimum of four weeks, you need to start slowly, first it will be quality and then slowly increase the quantity and then the intensity, Karthik was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
Right now the lockdown has eased a lot in Chennai, so you can get permission and go and practice, so I am planning to do that but I will do it gradually the body has been completely in zombie mode, with me sitting at home and not doing much.
It has been more than two months that Indian cricketers have been confined to their homes due to the nationwide lockdown to contain the contagious disease.
Government has eased lockdown restrictions and allowed the resumption of sporting activities and training, subject to state-specific guidelines.
India fast bowler Shardul Thakur is the first cricketer to resume outdoor training after the COVID-19 outbreak when he trained with domestic players at a local ground in Boisar in Maharashtras Palghar district late last month.
However, with inter-state travel still banned in the country, India bowling coach Bharat Arun has asked the cricketers to avail the grounds of their respective home states to do running and focus on their skill work.

Virtual coast-to-coast race will take runners through Nebraska – Omaha World-Herald
A 3,000-mile race across the country will take runners right through Nebraska. Virtually.
The Omaha Sports Commission is one of several groups drumming up runners for the Great American 5000, a virtual team run from San Francisco to New York.
Its a way to connect with fellow runners, former teammates or co-workers, said Lindsay Toussant, director of events for the Omaha Sports Commission. Its also a way to keep yourself accountable for staying fit during the summer.
In teams of up to 24, runners have from June 14 to Sept. 14 to tackle the coast-to-coast run. Team participants are encouraged to run as many days as possible, tracking runs using GPS-enabled apps.
As they log miles, runners can see where their teams stack up against the others on the route. Running, walking or hiking all count toward the teams mileage.
To finish the 3,107-mile race, a team of 24 would need each member to run 1.4 miles a day.
The entry fee is $50 per person, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Feeding America. Participants also will receive a race T-shirt.
When races go virtual, thats something youre doing all on your own, Toussant said. This event is a way for you to work as a team. You can still run this together and keep yourselves accountable.
