Fitness Centers re-opened in Jackson this week – WJTV

Fitness centers are opening up again this week including Fondren Fitness this Saturday at 8 a.m.

General Manager Terry Sullivan says he is positively surprised to see such an increased interest in new memberships already.

You know surprisingy weve been getting a lot of interest in the last week or two of people wanting to join, said Sullivan.So we think people have been you know sitting at home for two months and have been looking to exercise and people just want to get out of the house. We want to ensure them that this is the place to come to feel safe to work out.

Fondren Fitness is following state and city guidelines and even going a little above and beyond those guidelines to keep their facility safe.

Were closing early to allow for more deep cleaning,said Sullivan.We will have a limited capacity at thirty percent and we will have a dedicated employee that will go around the floor to make sure people are social distancing. We will shut down during the middle of the day from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. to do a deep clean. We are also requiring employees to be screened as well as members who will do temperature checks and are requiring masks for employees and for members just during this phase one of re-opening.

Fitness facilities in Richardson prepare to reopen after two months of lost business – Community Impact Newspaper

Sherry Majecki and her husband own five Hotworx franchises in Dallas Fort-Worth, including the Richardson location. She said the two-month closure has taken an incredible toll on her business, which opened last June.

I have zero revenue, Majecki said. The strain has been enormous.

Gov. Greg Abbott announced earlier this month that gyms could reopen at 25% capacity May 18. Showers and locker rooms must remain closed, all machines must be disinfected after use and clients must wear gloves, Abbott said at a May 5 press conference.

Hotworx offers virtually instructed exercise classes in infrared saunas. Once statewide orders forced fitness facilities to close, the company paused all memberships but still offered free exercise classes via the Hotworx app.

Now that were opening back up, were running into people that want to cancel because they're not comfortable coming in yet, Majecki said.

Hotworx has put in place several temporary measures to help enforce social distancing, Majecki said. Members must book sessions before coming into the studio, and only one person is allowed per sauna. The gym, which is normally open 24/7, is operating on modified hours to limit the number of people coming in and out of the building.

We are trying to make sure everybody feels as comfortable as they can, she said.

Prior to the pandemic, gyms and other fitness facilities were thriving. In 2019, the sports and fitness industry grew by 3.9%, representing the largest annual growth in 17 years, according to a 2020 annual report from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association.

While gyms have taken a significant hit, the past success of the industry should position it to quickly bounce back, said Tom Cove, president and CEO of the association.

The pre-COVID evidence should give companies encouragement that the sports and fitness industry was strong, sustainable and central to American way of life before the pandemic and should return to vitality as we recover, Cove said in a May 6 news release.

Personal training facility Fitness Together also opened last year in Richardson. Owner Kevin Cain said the halt in activity was damaging to his young business.

We are still in the growing stages, so we werent really set to weather two months with no revenue, he said.

Cain said his three trainers were able to schedule some virtual training sessions with clients, but revenue from that venture was not nearly enough for us to pay the bills, he said. As a result, trainers are anxious to begin working with clients again, he added.

Cains staff spent the last week booking appointments, he said, but not all clients are ready to return.

Some are really eager to jump back in, and some are a little tentative, he said. They want to wait a little bit more, which I totally understand.

As a personal training operation, Fitness Together is well equipped for social distancing, Cain said. However, the business has made some changes to ensure clients and trainers are as safe as possible. Only one client will be allowed inside at a time, and appointments will be spaced out by 15 minutes so trainers can clean and disinfect machines and surfaces, Cain said. Trainers will wear masks, and there will be gloves available for clients, he added.

I hope it gives clients confidence. ... It's safer than Kroger, he said.

Cain said he is hopeful his business model will attract new clients who may be too nervous to return to a larger gym.

This is a great alternative, he said. Everything is one-on-one and probably more sterile than many places that are open for business right now.

Many gym-goers turned to virtual workouts while sheltering in place, but Cain said his clients prefer one-on-one interaction, so he is not worried about how at-home workouts will affect his business.

Im not that concerned about losing business to YouTube videos, he said.

Hotworxs 125-degree saunas may be an unfavorable environment for the coronavirus, the company said in a statement. However, Hotworx makes no claim to provide a cure, remedy, treatment or relief in any way for COVID-19.

Regardless of whether heat has an impact on the virus, the supposed health benefits of infrared saunas could lead to an uptick in new members, Majecki said.

Since everyone right now is more health-conscious, we might see a surge, she said.

As with many industries, the coronavirus could have lasting impacts on how gyms do business in the future. Virtual training could be useful for clients who are on vacation or for some reason cannot come into the gym, Cain said.

Its just another tool in our arsenal, he said.

Fitness OFF the Field: A virtual event benefiting cancer survivors – WATE 6 On Your Side

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) Fitness OFF the Field event by the Survivor Fitness Foundation is going virtual this year due to COVID-19, but its not deterring them from their mission to support and celebrate those who have fought cancer.

The group saying recently due to the current situation and out of an abundance of caution, they had decided to move Fitness OFF the Field to a virtual event.

Fitness OFF the Field will take place on May 16 at 8:30 a.m. ET. The group saying with the event, they can still create a strong force to support cancer survivors and help them move forward after cancer.

Fitness OFF the Field is a virtual workout and team-to-team challenge to support and celebrate those who have faced cancer.

Teams will compete to raise funds that will help cancer survivors regain their hope and their health.

Survivor Fitness Foundation: All you have to do when registering isselect one team to join, helping them toward their goal. Then, on May 16 at 8:30 a.m. we will come together virtually for a fun workout, suitable for all fitness levels.

Heres How Your VO2 Max and Your Lifespan May Be Related – runnersworld.com

Your longevity depends on numerous factors, including gender, blood pressure, cholesterol, age, and lifestyle choices. A recent study in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings suggests there may be another one for that list: cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) level, which is determined by your VO2 max.

Although physicians dont routinely check this health marker, the researchers believe a CRF assessment shouldnt be reserved only for those experiencing cardiovascular issues.

We need to do a better job of promoting physical activity and exercise traininglike aerobic and resistance trainingthroughout the healthcare system, schools, the workplace, and society for prevention of cardiovascular disease, lead study author Jari Laukkanen, M.D., Ph.D., a cardiologist at the University of Eastern Finland, told Runners World. The long-term health of our populations will depend on the success of these efforts.

Researchers recruited about 59,000 people, aged 40 to 69, and assessed their cardiorespiratory fitness levels through a submaximal exercise test, or stress test, to determine each persons maximum capacity for exercise. From there, they were sorted into categories based on how well they handled the cardio workload.

Following up about six years later, researchers found that the group of people who were categorized as higher-riskthose who struggled with the stress testwas associated with a shorter lifespan.

The study shows that among subjects with a low risk and without diseases, greater fitness level was strongly associated with a lower risk of premature death, Laukkanen said. The findings enable new insights into the incremental, prognostic value of a fitness evaluation.

Although other health markers like blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and body mass index are all important to take into consideration, Laukkanen said fitness should be evaluated as well, as part of a normal annual physical.

The difficulty, he acknowledged, is that many physicians dont have easy access to such testing, nor do they have the personnel to administer and monitor the tests. That can make it tricky to request a CRF evaluation unless there are other risk factors that warrant the assessment.

However, there is a something that everyone can do, whether theyre able to get tested or not.

Increase your physical activity and maintain it, said Laukkanen. That is what changes your CRF level and provides benefits not just in your cardiovascular system, but also in metabolic function, skeletal muscle, and pulmonary system.

No matter your fitness level, there are plenty of ways to work on boosting your VO2 max, such as adding HIIT workouts, track sessions, and tempo runs to your routine.

Free VR fitness app VRWorkout is one of the most intense experiences on Oculus Quest, though youll need plenty of space to give it a try.

VRWorkout is available for free on the 3rd party store SideQuest. That means it hasnt gone through Facebooks policy checks around safety. Youll be jumping up and down, getting down to the ground and running on the spot. Given that Quest essentially blindfolds you to the real world, take caution if youre going to try this one out.

Of course, there are plenty of fitness-focused apps on Quest now, many with high production values and great songs to workout to. What makes VRWorkout so special besides being free? Simple: it uses Quests experimental hand-tracking feature. That means no more controllers and, as a result, a much more draining workout.

So, yes, theres a Beat Saber-like segment in which you punch different orbs, but it also frees your hands up to be used for push-ups and crunches. Quick-fire jumps and, frankly, a cruel amount of squats round off a demanding play session. In fact, VRWorkout gets your whole body working in ways other apps dont. Youll just have to excuse the rather crude presentation, not that its any different to other SideQuest fare.

The way VRWorkout works is to change up the type of exercise its asking of you, then track your hands and head to make sure youre actually doing them. For crunches, for example, alternating heights for head and hand markers are timed to make sure youre doing the proper motions, and the same goes for push ups and jumps.

You can tackle sessions either by individual songs or, more efficiently, choose a length of time to play for to a set difficulty. This is what a lot of VR apps miss; the break between songs/levels can often be too long. VRWorkout gives you a proper endurance test for the right amount of time you want to work out to.

Of course, hand-tracking on Quest isnt perfect and it can miss some markers, but thats not really the point if youre still doing the motions. This is all about giving it your all and trying as hard as you can; win or lose youll still feel the benefits.

Basically any other VR workout app on the official Oculus Quest store doesnt provide this range of workouts and for good reason; its potentially dangerous. But, as a result, VRWorkout pushes you more than anything else Ive played in VR, including the recently-launched, $20-a-month Supernatural.

YMCA of Greater Toledo prepares to reopen fitness facilities with new guidelines – 13abc Action News

PERRYSBURG, Ohio (WTVG) - To say that crews at the YMCA of Greater Toledo are ready to reopen is a bit of an understatement.

"We have been planning to reopen since the day we closed," president and CEO Brad Toft said. "We knew that things would change."

Since closing in mid-March, Toft says his team has looked at ways to safely re-launch each branch's fitness center. It's a plan he says that's now ready for execution after finally getting the OK from the Ohio Statehouse to reopen on May 26.

"We know that athletic facilities, working out provides both mental and physical benefits to people," Lt. Gov. Jon Husted said in a statewide address. We also know that its important, very important, that we keep these surfaces, these places clean.

Toft says only three YMCA locations will be open -- Fort Meigs, Wolf Creek and the West Toledo Y -- to start while others will join in phases. He says people will notice set-ups similar to those in places already open for business.

"We're going to be putting in all of the safety measures that you see everywherethe social distancing, limited capacity in our different areas," Toft said.

When it comes to gym equipment, Toft says some things will be roped off while others will have time limits and require reservations.

"Things are not going to be the same," Toft said. "They're going to be safe, they're going to be clean."

For employees, Toft says every one will be required to wear a mask, while members are recommended to follow suit.

"We're going to ask our members to clean up after themselves, make sure the equipment is clean, wash their hands, use hand sanitizer," Toft said.

With the countdown on to get compliant, Toft says the YMCA will be ready to roll when time comes to reopen.

"We have done an exorbitant amount of work cleaning and sanitizing our facilities," Toft said.

For parents wondering about day camps, those are allowed again on May 31, and the YMCA says it will re-launch them if it's safe to do so. Camp Storer in Michigan, however, will not reopen until the state adjusts its stay-at-home order.

Gyms and fitness centers in Ohio permitted to reopen on May 26 – WKYC.com

Ohio gyms and fitness centers have been given permission to reopen on May 26, Lt. Governor Jon Husted announced on Thursday.

Full guidance and safety measures for reopening will be available on the state's coronavirus website by the end of the day.

Gyms and fitness centers across the state have been closed since March 16 amid concerns regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19). On Wednesday, 35 gym owners in the state filed a lawsuit against Ohio Department of Health Director Dr. Amy Acton asking for their businesses to reopen as other industries in Ohio had been given permission to do so as the state began the process of reopening its economy.

As of Thursday, Ohio has 26,357 confirmed and probable positive coronavirus cases, including 4,718 hospitalizations, 1,268 ICU admissions and 1,534 deaths. Dating back to the discovery of the state's first coronavirus case on March 9, DeWine has put a number of measures in place to encourage physical distancing, including the state's first stay-at-home order on March 23.

PV Sindhu on concern around fitness of players amid lockdown: Many are worried and frustrated, but weve… – Hindustan Times

Among several other things that one finds tough to do during the lockdown, is staying fit. It is a big concern especially for athletes, as their training routines and formal coaching have gone for a toss. Badminton ace PV Sindhu, too, admits missing playing the game with opponents, which enables us to improve our moves and techniques. But not one to compromise on any aspect of her game, she has been religiously working out at home.

Giving a glimpse of her daily regime, she shares, I exercise, do strengthening workouts, squats, push-ups, burpees, jumps-squats, skipping and more. I also run, do stepper exercise, use sandbags for weight as well as knee workouts. Also, Im eating right, as I cant compromise on my health and fitness.

Along with athletes, coaches, too, have voiced their concern around the players fitness levels. Many are worried, impatient and frustrated, too. It does feel bad, I know. But, we have to accept the situation and stay positive, says Sindhu, who won silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Acknowledging that it might take time for both players and sports enthusiasts to come back to the court and stadiums, she states, Once we get back, its essential to follow social distancing. Though it wont happen anytime soon, thats alright.

The 24-year-old urges everyone to concentrate on taking care of themselves and their loved ones. Only when our lives are secure can we follow our dreams, she says, adding, Right now, its important to stay home and follow proper sanitisation. Negative thoughts can be controlled; meditation helps. Do things that you enjoy reading, drawing, cooking... Keep your mind occupied.

Sindhu, who is spending the much-needed time with family, is also learning to cook and stitch. Id rather learn something new than keep worrying about the situation, she quips.

Perhaps thats the reason why Sindhu didnt sulk over the Tokyo Olympics and other international tournaments being deferred due to the pandemic. When I came back from England, I could see it coming. Such decisions (lockdown) have been taken rightly. My first reaction was that Ive got some more time to prepare well, she explains.

As someone who believes in keeping things light both on and off the court, Sindhu adds that life isnt just about one thing. We need to value everything we have. I try to maintain a balance even on my social media, be it with my messages or sharing fun moments, she observes .

Bear It All Fitness announces closing due to pandemic – Greater Milwaukee Today

MUKWONAGO As businesses begin to reopen under new guidelines or wait for the Safer at Home order to be lifted, one small Mukwonago business announced they are permanently closing their doors because of the pandemic.

Bear It All Fitness in downtown Mukwonago, which offered a variety of barre classes and hybrid workout classes, announced its closing on Facebook mid-April.

The fairly new business opened December 9, 2019, and closed not even two months later, on March 14, 2020 because of the coronavirus with free classes temporarily offered online.

The business was owned by Ashlee Rybak and her husband John Rybak.

Ashlee Rybak said closing ultimately came down to bad timing.

We had a lot of interest and a growing community from as far as Milwaukee and Delafield, with many classes having to waitlist because they were getting so popular, she said.

Rybak said despite this, she decided to close the store March 14 because she noticed schools were closing and thought it would benefit her in the long run. When Safer at Home was issued, she then learned there would be no business at all.

I started doing free fitness classes from the studio on YouTube, Facebook Live and Zoom to keep my community together and keep their fitness up during an uncertain time, hoping it would be a few weeks only, Rybak said.

Rybak said she tried applying for some government assistance, but because she was so new and had such little revenue, she didnt receive any help. She also decided not to apply for loans because of her projections about the pandemics lingering effects.

I was so uncertain, she said. I put so much into starting this business capital, time, energy and passion. However, my instincts told me that not only would this not be blowing over anytime soon, but that when it did my business would continue to suffer. We market group fitness classes, but we sell community. If people are afraid to be by other people we wouldnt be able to make any revenue from our classes.

Rybak said while closing her business is disappointing, the community has been very uplifting.

At first it was emotionally overwhelming how many people offered to donate money to keep us afloat, who said we created their happy place and who were just really upset to see us go, Rybak said. When we held our closing sale so many (members) of our community came out to help us clear out and to say goodbye.

Rybak said she is unsure of what her future holds, as she has three children that she may end up homeschooling if schools do not reopen in the fall.

As for other local business owners, Rybak said she appreciates what they offer the community and continues to support them in any way she can.

We are purchasing teacher appreciation gifts from local businesses, have gotten take out from them, went to local greenhouses for our plants and garden and bought gift cards for future enjoyment, she said. I will continue to encourage others to do the same.

Rybak said she wanted to thank the Mukwonago Chamber of Commerce, H2C Commercial Real Estate and all the members of the studio that supported the belief in their vision for Bear It All Fitness.
