Everything the Men’s Health Fitness Director Eats in a Typical Day – menshealth.com
For Men's Health Fitness Director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S, creating the perfect eating schedule wasnt always easy.
Ive been strength training since I was in high school, but for a long time, I wasnt in control of my diet and didnt know what I was doing, he says. Once I learned that about five or six years ago, then I was able to make really good gains in terms of strength and the size I wanted.
Samuel keeps to a rigid eating schedule, making sure to fuel every 2 hours from the moment he wakes up. He also tracks how much he eats throughout the day. His preferred daily amounts are around 180 grams of protein, 120 to 180 grams of carbohydrates and 60 to 90 grams of fats.
"As long as Im awake, Im gonna eat. I want to be sure that I have some form of nutrition floating through my system so my muscles can constantly get a re-supply of nutrients." he says.
Samuel's day usually begins at 7:30 a.m., when he reaches for a shake. He likes to mix 1 scoops of whey protein, 1 tablespoon of almond butter, a greens supplement to get some antioxidants, and water to get his first food source of the day.
There is one catch: Its not necessarily the best tasting drink, Samuel says. But it also doesnt taste as bad as you may think. By 10:00 a.m., Samuel is ready for another shake to carry him through morning meetings.
When noon comes around, Samuel switches to natural sources of protein. A typical lunch for him includes six ounces of salmon, three ounces of brown rice, and two to three ounces of broccoli. That way, he gets a good green vegetable, a slow-burning carb to keep him going through the rest of the day, and a great go-to protein source. He repeats this meal at about 2:30 p.m. I dont need a lot of choices in my diet, he says, as long as its giving me the fuel I need.
At 5:00 p.m., it's workout mode. Before training Samuel tries to get in another meal. Because hes looking to bring a variety of natural protein sources into his food routine, he likes to have five to six ounces of a protein (either chicken, beef or pork), four ounces of potatoes, and a side of peppers and onions.
If he feels like he needs to add some fat into his dinner, then hell eat a spoonful of almond butter straight out of the jar. Hell repeat this again around 7:30 p.m. and by 10:00 p.m., he has his last fueling by eating some salmon and broccoli.
As for hydration, Samuel has a target of finishing a gallon of water a day. Although it might seem daunting (especially at work), he makes it easier by carrying around a large bottle of water everywhere, especially at meetings where he doesnt always need to speak.
I dont have to talk for every minute of every single meeting, he says. Meetings are a great chance to sit back when somebody else is talking and guzzle as much water as I possibly can.
Even though Samuels diet looks regimented, he does like to have a cheat day on Saturdays. He does have some caveats though: He respects his water intake, eating intervals ,and protein intake. But dont think he only likes to eat salmon and broccolihe does love some peanut butter cups and a slice or two of cheesecake.
So whats Samuels advice for someone looking to create their own eating structure? Find something that will work with you for the long haul and will give you the nutrients necessary for health and for building muscle. Find a way that works for you. Dont fall into the trap of going onto a restricted system. Build a system that you can maintain.

Fitness tracker accuracy might not always be on point – Android Authority
Opinion post by
Jimmy Westenberg
Fitness devices are getting more and more powerful every year. Companies such as Garmin, Fitbit, Samsung, and others are always adding new features to their devices that keep track of everything from simple step counts to potentially detecting sleep apnea. Its actually crazy how much these little computers can keep track of throughout the day.
But should you trust your wearable to report all those numbers accurately? Maybe not all the time. And thats okay.
What metricsshould be taken with a grain of salt?
I hate to say this, but that step count on your fitness tracker probably isnt accurate. It may be accurate within a few hundred steps, but its definitely not right on the money.
Most people wear their fitness trackers strapped to their wrists. Wrist-based devices need to do a lot of guesstimating in order to count steps. Most fitness trackers do this by utilizing something called a three-axis accelerometer a little module that senses (you guessed it) acceleration. Gyroscopes, too, help fitness trackers keep track of orientation, and altimeters help your wearable track altitude.
Accelerometers, gyroscopes, and altimeters might be the best tools for wearables to sense your steps, but theyre always going to be off. Why? Because were all human and we all move around throughout the day in ways that arent traditional steps. The trackers sense and record those movements and potentially think youre taking steps. I just moved my hands around in the air and my Garmin running watch counted 12 steps, for example.
Plus, different trackers are using different algorithms to keep track of all this data, so no two wearables will report the same numbers.
Fitbit vs Garmin: A battle between two fitness giants thats been debated for some time. Fitbit is one of the most well-known fitness tracker companies out there. The brand name has been given the "Kleenex effect"
Most wearables nowadays also come with optical heart rate sensors. Some devices record all-day heart rate, some record every few minutes, and some only record when you manually hit a button or start a workout. Resting and active heart rate, heart rate zones, and other nitty-gritty heart rate details are also inaccurate most of the time.
Optical heart rate sensors work by shining an LED directly onto your skin and monitoring how that light reflects off your blood vessels. Sensors in your fitness tracker then pick up all that information and process it into easy-to-understand pulse readings.
It's more important for wrist-based heart rate sensors to pick up on major trends, rather than being 100% accurate.
However, there are a number of factors that can skew this data. The color of your skin, how much hair you have on your wrist, and how tightly youre wearing your tracker can all affect those resting and active heart rate numbers. Even the modules themselves arent all created equally. Different fitness companies source heart rate sensors from different companies, and some of those sensors arent all at the same level. Think of them like smartphone displays you might have a nice AMOLED display on your Samsung and LG phones, but one of them is a few generations ahead of the other.
Steps and heart rate are just two metrics. Fitness trackers also estimate caloric burn, sleep stages, and more. All of these metrics will look slightly different on every tracker you wear and how you wear it.
But Im paying a company to track my activity! I should expect them to do it accurately.
No, no, I hear you. Youd like to spend money on something that works the way its intended. I, too, want fitness trackers to be more accurate, but thats just not the world we live in.
As a general rule, we should put more importance on the major trends our fitness trackers pick up, rather than taking each metric as fact.
If your heart rate sensor catches a quick downturn in your heart rate when you take a walk break on your run, isnt that more important than being 100% accurate? Personally, Id say so.
Also, the number of steps we take in a day is a fine metric to track, but it doesnt always tell the best story of your overall health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and American Heart Association (AHA), we should all strive for 150 minutes of moderate and 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week. Companies like Fitbit and Google are centering their activity tracking around these metrics within the Fitbit app and Google Fit. I wouldnt be surprised if more companies followed suit in the future. It just makes more sense to track the duration of our exercises.
How can I improve my fitness trackers accuracy?
If youre going through the trouble to wear one of these devices every day, you might as well make the most of it. How do you make your fitness tracker track things more accurately?
The best suggestion I have is to follow the manufacturer guidelines. I dont want to be the guy that tells you to read the little instruction manual that comes with your smartwatch, but you should probably skim it just in case there are some good tips in there. Companies have tips posted online, too, and many of the bigger fitness companies have forums you can join to learn more about your tracker.
If you really dont want to do any of those things, here are a few general guidelines you can follow to make your device more accurate.
Ultimately, fitness devices are highly personal, functional, and oftentimes affordable pieces of tech that really can track an insane amount of data. While Im certainly not trying to dismiss the legitimately useful features each one of them offers, I think its important to keep the limitations in mind.

Gyms, Fitness Studios, Movie Theaters and Museums Can Reopen on May 15 – Flathead Beacon
Gov. Steve Bullock announced today additional Phase 1 reopening guidelines that will give gyms and gym pools, fitness studios, movie theaters and museums the option to reopen beginning May 15 as long as they adhere to criteria limiting capacity, requiring social distancing and imposing thorough sanitation requirements.
Those entities were previously barred from reopening during Phase 1 under the governors original plan. Other places of assembly will remain closed, including performance theaters, concert halls, bowling alleys, bingo halls, music halls and pools that are not located in gyms or licensed public accommodations.
Bullocks office said the guidelines were developed with input from local public health officials.
In consultation with public health experts, we have determined that these businesses can carefully reopen under strict capacity, social distancing, and sanitation guidelines, Bullock said in a May 7 statement. As Montana continues to aggressively manage the virus and we move forward with the plan to reopen, I am again reminding Montanans that social distancing is vital to continue curbing the virus. All of us must do our part to stay open and stay on a path of decline in positive cases.
The new guidelines allow fitness studios, gyms and gym pools to begin operating on May 15 at 50 percent capacity and with strict guidelines, including requiring staff to sanitize frequently touched areas and equipment during hours of operation, train workers on symptoms and handwashing technique as well as posting relevant signage instructing members with symptoms to stay home.
Hand sanitizer must be available, employees should wear masks and guests should wear masks when possible, the guidelines state.
A six-foot distance must also be maintained between equipment and in locker rooms. Personal training may be allowed if social distancing can be maintained. Indoor group classes are prohibited, while outdoor group classes can be conducted as long as social distancing is maintained and in groups of 10 or fewer if appropriate physical distancing is not possible.
Health and wellness has always been our goal, and the advent of the coronavirus has only sharpened that focus, Doug Mahlum of the Montana Athletic Club in Bigfork said in a statement. Our commitment is to our members, and our communities, keeping them safe. The protocols established by the state and the fitness industry will be instrumental in this endeavor. We want to bring back the physical and mental well-being of Montanans, get past this pandemic and return to what we do best helping you stay fit and healthy.
Gym pools are allowed to operate at half capacity. Bullocks office said the CDC has indicated that properly maintained pool water inactivates the virus.
It is critical that pools that have shut down during this time or reduced maintenance follow proper reopening procedures and sampling to ensure the water is safe for use before opening, the guidelines state. In the event a confirmed COVID-19 case is associated with a facility the facility should clean in accordance with CDCs facility environmental cleaning procedures for workout areas, seating, locker rooms, and other areas of the establishment frequented by swimmers.
Pool classes may continue if social distancing can be observed, and swimmers should maintain a six-foot distance in the pool at all times. Pools at licensed public accommodations including hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and tourist homes can operate at half capacity and with additional social distancing and safety measures.
Non-tactile museums and movie theaters will be allowed to open under the updated guidance. Interactive museums or museums that allow touch interactions and displays and live performance theaters cannot operate.
Museums and theaters must keep their capacity at 50 percent and maintain six feet between non-family members or the immediate party. Signage must be posted instructing those who have COVID-19-related symptoms to stay home. Facilities must increase cleaning and sanitizing of frequently touched surfaces and control customer flow to maximize distancing.
Hand sanitizer or hand-washing stations must be available, and each venue should create and implement a written COVID-19 response plan. The guidelines state that cleaning and sanitizing should be completed no less than every two hours. Facilities should install shielding between workers and attendees whenever possible.
Theaters should increase the cleaning time period between showings to ensure that commonly touched areas such as arm rests and railings are cleaned frequently. Ushers should also monitor and enforce social distancing. At museums, gift shops are also limited to 50 percent capacity.
The guidelines state that gatherings should continue to be avoided in groups of more than 10 people in circumstances that do not readily allow for appropriate physical distancing. Senior living and assisted-living facilities must continue to restrict visitors. The 14-day travel quarantine remains in effect.
All the businesses allowed to reopen on May 15 are also subject to other requirements. The full guidance will be posted atcovid19.mt.gov.
So far, Montana businesses and customers are working together to practice the social distancing and hygiene measures necessary to restart our economy, restore our collective sense of well-being and keep each other safe, John Felton, president and CEO of RiverStone Health, a health clinic in Billings, said in a statement accompanying Bullocks announcement of the updated guidelines. I am confident we will all do our part during this important next step.

Retail stores and fitness centers could open as soon as May 15th – KDRV
MEDFORD, Ore -- Retail stores and fitness centers in Oregon could reopen as soon as next Friday.
"We will do whatever it takes to get back open." saidJim Kusnerik. He is the Managing Partner of Superior Athletics. "It's nice that we've had the last month to get use to it. Figure out what this new reality is like and now we will just have to decide if unlocking the door makes financial sense for us right now." saidLaurel Mckee. She is the owner of Web-Sters.
If any type of businesses wants to reopen they have guidelines from Governor Brown and the Oregon Health Authority to follow. These guidelines stress social distancing. "Luckily, we have a pretty large store so maintaining six feet of distance will be one of the easier parts." said Mckee. "Ithink definitely maintaining the social distancing is possible, especially in our free weight areas." saidKusnerik.
Everyone is reacting differently to the announcement. "I'm excited and nervous at the same time." saidKusnerik. "We do want to make sure that my staff feels safe and protected; as well as anybody that comes into the shop." said Mckee.
Kusnerik isconfident each of his fitness centers are clean and ready for people to use. "We are scrubbed from top to bottom. Staff is going to be continue cleaning throughout the day."
Mckee is looking to do a slower opening. They've been having people come in to shop by appointment only and are looking to continue thatand maybe add a few hours a week of open shopping. "Idon't think that we are missing out on a lot of foot traffic since Ashland is still pretty quiet right now." said Mckee.

Ben Roethlisberger’s offseason fitness program consisted of playing golf and drinking beer, to which we say hell yes – Golf Digest
It's been awhile since we've seen Ben Roethlisberger on an actual football field. In Week 2 of the 2019 season, Big Ben, then 37, went down with an elbow injury. Soon after, it was announced that he would need season-ending Tommy John surgery, the kind of diagnosis usually fit for the Pirates, not the Steelers. Most presumed that would be it for the best Steelers quarterback ever not named Bradshaw. He even listed his gaudy, golf-simulator-equipped Pittsburgh mansion.
But that was then and this is now, and with the calendar speeding toward training camp, Roethlisberger and Steelers fans alike are preparing as if he's not only going to play, but be the face of the franchise once more. It's a potentially inspiring story from a guy who, let's be honest, hasn't provided a ton of those over the years, but if you think Big Ben is going to come in trimmed down, clean shaven, and able to touch his toes, think again. This is still the same old Ben we're talking about, with Jay Glazer alleging via The Athletic this week that no. 7 spent the offseason drinking beer and playing golf as he always has and always will.
Asked if he thought Roethlisberger at "85% fitness" would be enough propel the Steelers into contention this season, here's what Glazer had to say:
First of all, lets not put the words fitness and Ben Roethlisbergertogether, they are allergic to each other. There is no fitness in BenRoethlisberger. His idea of a great off-season workout program isdoing one yoga session, playing golf, and drinking some beer. However, yes, what Mike Tomlin and Roethlisberger have done there has beenincredible.
To which we say God bless and hell yes. Avocado smoothies and electric eel pajamas aren't for everyone, and by everyone we mean definitely not Big Ben, who has spent the majority of his playing career acting like he's retired. But that's part of his charm, if you want to call it that, and we wouldn't have it any another way.

Fitness Friday with 17s Maddie Janssen and Evolvecore May 8, 2020 – KGET 17

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) Classes are canceled. Many are working from home. Church services moving online. Were more isolated perhaps than ever. Combine that with fear over contracting coronavirus and the stress starts to add up. But theres something you can do, right now as you read this, that can both relieve that anxiety and boost your immune system. And its as simple as putting one foot in front of the other.
Weve been prescribing exercise for years, said Dr. Hemmal Kothary. We know for a fact that when we exercise it does help several things, it does help different disease processes. It also helps improve our immune system. thats a known fact and we are assuming, we dont know for sure quite yet, that improving our immune system might help us ward some of the symptoms of coronavirus.Kothary says exercise may even provide preventative effects against coronavirus. That possibility alone should be enough to get you moving, and if you do, youll reap many more benefits, in the way of maintaining your mental health.
When we get our heart rate up like that, theres been research that shows its just as good as 50mg of Zoloft for moderate levels of depression and anxiety, says Psychologist Corey Gonzales. So getting our heart rate up for at least 30 minutes, threetimes a week, is proven to be very helpful. Its not a pill. Its not an app. It doesnt cost any money and it hasnt been canceled. Just because most are homebound right now, doesnt mean you cant work up a sweat. To help you stay active right now, KGET will be live-streaming workouts every Friday that you can do along with us from the safety of your own home. For Fitness Franchises, a Calculated Return to In-studio Sweat – Franchise Times News – May 2020 – Franchise Times

As it reopens its locations, group fitness concept Burn Boot Camp, like other gyms, is evaluating class sizes and other changes necessary to comply with new health and safety guidelines.
Were not doing partner workouts. We are doing air high-fives, said Amanda Hall as she illustrated some the changes at Burn Boot Camp, where shes the VP of operations and is helping guide franchisees as they begin to reopen their fitness studios.
Sixteen Burn Boot Camp locations are back open in five statesGeorgia, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennesseewith more on the way as states lift COVID-19-related restrictions that in most cases have kept businesses, including Burns nearly 300 gyms, closed since mid-March. Group fitness concepts such as Burn face a variety of new guidelines dictated by states and counties, meaning, said Hall, the requirements to reopen are much more substantive than simply doing away with high-fives. Our field support team and our franchise advisory council put together a reopening plan, not just operationally but the cleaning, the PPE, now the common term for personal protective equipment, and analyzing capacity, she said. Really, the reopening construct is walking franchisees through all the steps and making sure they adhere to individual state guidelines.
In Arkansas, for example, gyms must ensure people maintain a 12-foot distance while working out and masks are to be worn except when actively exercising. In Tennessee, fitness centers in 89 counties (excluding major metros) can reopen at 50 percent capacity but must keep showers and locker rooms closed. There are plenty more guidelines to navigate, pointed out Hall, and an internal task force is working closely with franchisees in the 37 states where Burn operates. Still, even with enhanced health and safety measure in place, Hall said the brand recognizes members might not be ready to return even if their studio can reopen.
We understand that weve never lived through COVID-19 before and its impacted everyone differently, she said. So keeping that member-first mentality is key. Each Burn Boot Camp community has a members-only Facebook group, helping franchisees stay engaged with clients and allowing them to gauge interest in returning to in-person classes.
Were also still offering a virtual workout to meet members where they are, said Hall. We plan to continue that for the foreseeable future. For locations that have reopened, though, the response has been positive, she continued. We are definitely seeing that our members want to get back in the gym.
Dont open too soon
CityRows Atlanta studio could have reopened May 1, the date Georgias governor said gyms, along with spas, hair salons and bowling alleys could resume business, but the local operator chose to wait, a move CityRow CEO Helaine Knapp (pictured below) said proved to be the right one.
When Atlanta chose not to reopen right away, their clients were rejoicing online and saying thank you for thinking of our safety, said Knapp, who founded the row machine-based fitness concept in 2014 and partnered with consulting firm Franworth in 2018 to begin franchising.
We cant reopen too soon, she continued, we have to do it right.
The location in Atlanta plans to reopen May 16, with a franchisee in Texas also starting to prepare to resume studio classes. CityRow, which has 11 studios in eight states, is taking it slow and advising its franchisees to do the same, stressed Knapp. Start listening, its listening to their clients and listening to their staff, she said, with the feelings of instructors being especially important. If youve got instructors who say absolutely no way, Im not ready to come back, then you should probably rethink your plans.
As mandated closures hit CityRows locations, the brand launched CityRow Live and began filming 80 live classes a week incorporating body weight and strength exercises, modifying the usual workouts because most people dont have rowers at home. Our studios are actually bringing in revenue right now, said Knapp. And its helped our studios really stay top of mind so our clients are thinking of us first. Two locations whose early March openings were delayed were also able to use the live online classes to increase pre-sales of memberships, she noted.
CityRow locations, when they do reopen, are already well-positioned for social distancing, said Knapp, with only about 20 people per class. Capacity will of course be limited depending on the state, but we were never jamming people in, she said. And you have your own rower, your own mat, you dont change. Studios will operate with new double cleaning protocols, where clients wipe down their equipment and staff also do a full cleaning between each class. Clients and staff will also be asked to take a health pledge before each class.
The baseline is, this sucks. But the next thing is, well get through this together, said Knapp.
At-home is the anchor
Tough Mudder Bootcamp has been preparing for weeks for its studios to reopen, said CEO Britt Canady, but what that reopening looks like goes far beyond simply returning to in-studio classes. TMB At Home, which the brand launched as a $49 per month option with a mix of pre-recorded workouts, live-streamed classes and coaching tips, wont go away even after gyms open back up, a decision Canady, pictured below, said is meant to allow people to choose whats most comfortable for them.
That has to remain an option for our clients and, frankly, for our staff, he said. We dont want to make in-studio feel like its the only offering.
In fact, in-studio workouts are just one part of Tough Mudder Bootcamps three-pronged approach, with TMB at Home and TMB in the Park, outdoor social distancing workouts, making up the other prongs. When classes do resume staff will wear masks at all times, said Canady, there will be zero equipment sharing and TMB will ask members to self-screen, among other new safety measures.
The brand is working with franchisees to help prepare members for the changes and to get input from those members before planning to reopen. Do a pulse of your community and focus on the ones whove been the most active, because theyll be the most honest, said Canady. If that community isnt ready to come back, theres no point in forcing it.
I believe people are craving normalcy in an abnormal time, but you cant assume the comfort of any one client or staff.

Planet Fitness Reports Decreased Q1 2020 Revenue Due to Effects of COVID-19 – Club Industry
Planet Fitness Inc., Hampton, New Hampshire, reported first quarter 2020 revenue of $127.2 million, a decrease of $21.6 million (14.5 percent) compared to first quarter 2019, the public company reported this week. This included a system-wide same-store sales increase of 9.8 percent.
We entered 2020 with very good momentum and the new fiscal year got off to a strong start, Chris Rondeau, Planet Fitness CEO, said in a media release. The outbreak of COVID-19 in the U.S. has significantly disrupted our business as well as everyday life.
The company temporarily closed all Planet Fitness locations in mid-March and took several actions to strengthen its financial liquidity and flexibility, he said. Planet Fitness is working with its franchisees and assessing recommendations from state and local governments and health authorities on plans for safely reopening its clubs.
While there is still uncertainty about the ultimate impact COVID-19 will have on our industry and the overall economy, I am confident that Planet Fitness will emerge from this period well-positioned to further expand its leadership role in the fitness industry, Rondeau said in the release.
The biggest impact on the companys top and bottom line was the deferral of revenue related to monthly membership dues collected in March, before stores closed due to COVID-19, Planet Fitness Chief Financial Officer Tom Fitzgerald said in a call with analysts on May 5. Members will be credited for any membership dues paid for periods when Planet Fitness locations were closed. Because of this, the company deferred $20 million in revenue related to monthly membership dues collected in March before clubs closed--$14.1 million of which was from franchise royalty and $5.9 million of which was from monthly dues at corporate-owned stores. That revenue will be recognized once clubs reopen.
The outbreak of COVID-19 prevented the company from doing planned new and replacement equipment sales during the last few weeks of March. Revenue from the companys equipment segment decreased $16.8 million (37.4 percent) to $28.2 million from $45 million in the prior year period due to lower equipment sales to new and existing franchisee-owned stores in the first quarter compared to the same period in 2019. The decrease includes $10 million in lower revenue due to COVID-19.
Planet Fitness opened 39 new clubs in the first quarter, which increased the number of Planet Fitness clubs to 2,039 at the end of the quarter.
The revenue by segment included a $7.2 million (11 percent) decrease of franchise segment revenue to $58.5 million compared to $65.8 million in first quarter 2019. This amount does not include $18.7 million of deferred royalty and national advertising fund revenue collected but not recognized as a result of the temporary club closures caused by COVID-19. Franchise segment same-store sales increased by 10 percent.
Corporate-owned club segment revenue increased $2.5 million (6.5 percent) to $40.5 million compared to the same period last year. Same store sales for corporate-owned clubs increased 7.3 percent, driven by higher revenue of $5.5 million from corporate-owned clubs that were opened or acquired since Jan. 1, 2019 but partially offset by lower revenue of $3 million from corporate-owned stores included in the same-store sales. The $40.5 million corporate-owned stores revenue for the first quarter 2020 does not reflect $5.9 million of deferred revenue that was collected but not recognized as a result of temporary club closures from COVID-19.
