Northeast Ohio fitness group is making sure mothers have a village to lean on during social distancing – News 5 Cleveland

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio For many of us, social distancing brings with it, isolation. But FIT4MOM, an organization that hosts workout classes for moms and their kids, is trying to combat that isolation.

Leslie Radke is an instructor at FIT4MOM for moms in Willoughby and Mentor.

Most of our classes are done with our babies and strollers. So, our flagship class is Stroller Strides, and that's a full body workout, she said. It combines strength training and cardio, as well as interactive songs, and stories and activities for our little ones while we are working out.

She said once Gov. Mike Dewine ordered all Ohio schools to shut down, they had to think of another way to connect their clients.

This is so much more than just a workout. It's really a social group she said.

They moved their workouts online.

But how, especially with toddlers, do you create this social atmosphere with other toddlers and keep that social connection, that emotional connection between all of your moms? asked Radke.

Thats when they began to have social events online, too.

The social events range from virtual coffee chats, logging online for story time with the kids, to even parents night out.

Radke said theyve seen an uptick in virtual attendance and a lot more families are looking for an outlet and a social connection.

People just share what's going on in their lives right now and what they've been doing and how they're feeling. Its just so necessary, and at the end, everyone's just like, Im so glad I have this, she said.

There are various FIT4MOM locations throughout our area. To find one click here.

FIT4MOM Willoughby-Mentor is offering a $39 membership for its workout classes for the month of April, but all of its social events are free.

10 best workout games and fitness games for Android – Android Authority

For the record, there is actually a whole genre of fitness games for mobile that has nothing to do with the player working out. They are usually simulators of some sort where you build a skinny person into a bodybuilder or you build a gym or some such thing. This is not a list of those types of games. Every game on this list requires, or at least encourages, the player to work out.

Price: Free

Achievement isnt actually game, but it does a decent job of motivating people to work out. The app basically pays you to do fitness stuff. You wont be able to quit your job or anything, but you should get enough to occasionally spoil yourself with something. Basically, the app keeps track of your various stats and academics use it as source material for studies. Every time you log your stats, you get points. You eventually trade those points for prizes. Since there are prizes, this totally counts as a game. In any case, the app is free to download and use.

Price: Free / Up to $3.49

Whos ready to get into the weird fitness games? Burn Your Fat With Me is a dating simulator with a fitness element. The game plays a lot like a Doctor Layton or Phoenix Wright game. However, instead of building cases or solving puzzles, youre trying to burn fat. The player works their way through various in-game achievements such as doing 50 sit-ups in three minutes and those achievements progress the story. The visual novel and dating sim aspect is something you dont see everyday. The one linked at the button below is for the fellas and there is a separate one for ladies as well. These are two of the weirdest fitness games we found. God bless Japan.

Price: Free trial / $9.99 per month / $89.99 per year

CycleCast is an interesting app if you have a stationary bike at home. It lets you basically take spin classes at home with real instructors, music, and other fun elements. The app includes over 800 cycling workouts in 20, 30, 45, and 60 minute increments. Its not quite a game, but it alleviates the boredom of working out all by yourself with no interaction. There are several apps like this, including CycleGo, Arcade Fitness, and others that add a few game elements in from time to time. Peloton is also a popular option for stationary cyclists.

Price: Free to play

Fitness RPG is, at its core, a simple mobile gacha game. It has the usual stuff like turn-based combat, various heroes to play with, online PvP, and a story to play through. It even has an energy system to limit how much you play. However, you can overcome that limit by walking. The app doubles as a pedometer and gives you free energy to play the game as you walk. You can connect Google Fit or Fitbit to the app so it doesnt have to count your steps. The game itself is a bit repetitive and not the most inspiring in the genre. Its pedometer function makes unique, though, and perfect for a list like this.

Price: Free to play

There are a number of augmented reality games that promote walking around to get stuff. The most popular of them is Pokemon Go. You go outside, walk around, spin Poke Stops for loot, fight other players at gyms, and catch Pokemon. You absolutely cannot play this game at home and you get more stuff the more you walk around. Niantic has a few other games if Pokemon isnt your thing, including Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and Ingress. There are also other games in the genre, including Jurassic Park Alive and The Walking Dead: Our World. Here is a full list of them in case you want to know more.

Price: Free to play

Walkr is a hybrid of a fitness game and an adventure game. Players walk around and the game keeps track of the steps. It then uses those steps to move players around the game universe. The game has 50 planets to discover, various missions to complete, and a goal to help you reach 10,000 steps per day. The missions affect the game world so you kind of build things as you go. The game worked mostly fine during our testing, but some players filed complaints about the app not always registering steps.

Price: Free to play

Wokamon is a hybrid between a fitness game and a Tamagotchi style simulator. The concept isnt much different from other games on the list. You walk a bunch of steps and it gives you in-game stuff. Players earn more Wokamons as they walk and thats the center premise of the game. The energy they gain from our walking helps save their planet. In any case, its a cute little game with a surprisingly small amount of player interaction. You log in, take a walk, and then use the energy for in-game stuff and thats about it.

Price: Free / $3.99 per month / $24.99 per year

Zombies, Run! is a game for walkers, runners, and joggers. The game starts when you start your exercise and progresses as you cover more distance. There are over 300 total story missions to complete and many of them have you literally running away from a zombie horde and not finishing the level until you run far enough. Its one of the original fitness games on mobile and its had a long time to mature. The subscription cost helps support the developer as they come out with new content. Its relatively cheap compared to most fitness subscriptions, and we like that.

Price: Free / Varies

Zwift is another cycling game for people with stationary bikes at home. This one is actually a game. You connect your device to Zwift and then quite literally race other players. There are over 1,000 structured workouts, various games, and some other stuff you can do. The upside is that its a lot more fun to race people than it is to bike alone. However, the downside is you do need some sort of sensor such as the Zwift Run Pod or a Wahoo RPM Cycling and Cadence Sensor to connect to the app. There are multiple products to choose from, but you do need one to use this app.

Price: Varies

Mobile isnt the best platform for this kind of stuff. There are a bunch of workout games for other platforms or, at least, games that get your blood pumping during regular game play. Some notable examples include Ring Fit Adventure, Just Dance 2020, and Fitness Boxing on the Nintendo Switch along with Beat Saber on the Oculus Rift and PS4. Of course, you have options like the old Wii Fit and plenty of others. If you own other video game systems, its worth Googling those platforms to see if there are any workout games for your consoles.

If we missed any great fitness games or workout games for Android, tell us about them in the comments! You can also click here to check out our latest Android app and game lists!

The evolutionary dynamics and fitness landscape of clonal hematopoiesis – Science Magazine

Evolutionary dynamics in hematopoiesis

Cells accumulate mutations as we age, and these mutations can be a source of diseases such as cancer. How cells containing mutations evolve, are maintained, and proliferate within the body has not been well characterized. Using a quantitative framework, Watson et al. applied population genetic theory to estimate mutation accumulation in cells in blood from sequencing data derived from nearly 50,000 healthy individuals (see the Perspective by Curtis). By evaluating how mutations differ between blood cell populations, a phenomenon known as clonal hematopoiesis, the researchers could observe how recurrent mutations can drive certain clonal lineages to high frequencies within an individual. The risk of specific mutations, some of which are associated with leukemias, rising to high frequencies may therefore be a function of cellular selection and the age at which the mutation originated.

Science, this issue p. 1449; see also p. 1426

Somatic mutations acquired in healthy tissues as we age are major determinants of cancer risk. Whether variants confer a fitness advantage or rise to detectable frequencies by chance remains largely unknown. Blood sequencing data from ~50,000 individuals reveal how mutation, genetic drift, and fitness shape the genetic diversity of healthy blood (clonal hematopoiesis). We show that positive selection, not drift, is the major force shaping clonal hematopoiesis, provide bounds on the number of hematopoietic stem cells, and quantify the fitness advantages of key pathogenic variants, at single-nucleotide resolution, as well as the distribution of fitness effects (fitness landscape) within commonly mutated driver genes. These data are consistent with clonal hematopoiesis being driven by a continuing risk of mutations and clonal expansions that become increasingly detectable with age.

U of A fitness expert starts blog to help people in isolation get exercise – Folio – University of Alberta

When images emerged a fews weeks ago of people clumped together running stairs in the Edmonton river valley as if the world wasnt in the grip of a pandemic, University of Alberta fitness expert Loren Chiu decided to take action.

Physical activity is necessary, but we cant carry on with a business as usual attitude, said the anatomy and biomechanics researcher. Frankly, this attitude endangers others and prolongs the time it will take to contain the pandemic.

I created the Exercise in Isolation blog for anyone interested in home exercise. Now, Im challenging fitness enthusiasts to be creative and exercise in their own space.

Chiu said there is ample evidence, from research on bedrest to simulated spaceflight/zero gravity conditions, that physical fitness and health decline with inactivity. Coincidentally, he said these declines start within two weeksthe same length of time as a quarantineand become progressively worse.

The blog is a combination of here are things you can do, and this is why you should be doing it, he said.

While exercise programs are typically tailored to an individual, Chiu said they are most effective when there are a variety of spaces and equipment to use. He said the first thing he wants to help people with is problem solving.

How does one exercise effectively without gym equipment? When confined to their house or apartment? I hope to apply training principles, scientific research and practical experience to develop solutions, he said.

He added the blog is for everyone from children and youth to adults and even athletes, and its main purpose is to be educational and informative.

What its not is a platform to provide advice for optimal training during normal circumstances, he added.

Chiu said exercise is probably more important now than ever. Besides the well-documented long-term consequences of losing physical fitness, including weight gain and cardiovascular disease, Chiu said it may also have an immediate effect of reducing immunity.

There are many other sources providing a daily workout, but I wanted to use my education, research and practical experience so readers can learn how to manage their own physical fitness during the pandemicknowledge they can continue to use in the future, he said.

Chiu is hoping to publish three or four posts per week and will rely on reader feedback and questions to drive future posts, as well as content from colleagues who have expertise in other related areas.

Liz Weston: Financial fitness coaches help those struggling with the basics – oregonlive.com

Dear Liz: Im hoping you could provide recommendations, referrals or tips on how to help me manage my money. Im seeking a financial planner who can help me pay my bills on time, learn to budget and pay off credit card debt.

Answer: When youre struggling with the basics, a financial fitness coach or an accredited financial counselor may be a better fit than a financial planner.

Financial coaches and counselors specialize in budgeting, debt management, retirement planning and creating better money habits in general. Coaches and counselors in private practice typically charge $100 to $150 an hour, although many work on a sliding scale, said Rebecca Wiggins, executive director of the Assn. for Financial Counseling & Planning Education, which grants both credentials.

These accredited financial professionals also are employed by the military, credit unions and other organizations to provide services for free or low cost. You can start your search at https://www.afcpe.org/.

Dear Liz: This is a follow-up question to one you recently answered about tapping 401(k)s in order to delay the start of Social Security. I am 63 and retired early with a good pension that fully covers my basic living expenses. Any additional money would only be gravy for vacations and travel. Would I be taxed the same if I start taking Social Security now vs. waiting? I could easily tap my 401(k) to put off applying for Social Security.

Answer: When it comes to Social Security, if you can wait, you probably should.

Many middle-income people who have retirement funds will pay higher taxes if they start their benefits early, according to researchers who studied the tax torpedo, which is a sharp increase and then decline in marginal tax rates caused by the way Social Security benefits are taxed. The researchers found that many could lessen its effects by delaying the start of Social Security and tapping retirement funds instead.

If youre married and the primary earner, its especially important to delay as long as possible because your benefit determines the survivor benefit that one of you will receive after the other dies.

In the wake of COVID-19, the fitness industry goes remote – and some of it might stay that way – LancasterOnline

On March 18, Bryan Majors, a personal trainer specializing in basketball, sent 5,000 subscribers an email message with the subject line I am Corona-positive.

Majors was trying to say he was being proactive and simply keeping an optimistic attitude about dealing with the virus and pandemic. The balance of his email made that clear.

But the subject line caused some to freak out. Understandably, some readers assumed he was actively battling the virus.

Two days later, he sent a follow-up message called Positive Mindset.

Don't be scared or worried, he wrote, I do not have Covid19. I apologize if you did not understand the previous email. I'm talking about how we ALL should be during these trying times of the spread of the Corona VIRUS! POSITIVE!!!''

It's something of a metaphor for the personal training and fitness industry during the pandemic getting knocked sideways, then getting back up and finding new methods that may outlast it.

I don't regret the wording one bit, said Majors, who has counted former McCaskey High School stars Kobe Gantz, Jerry Johnson, Dustin Salisbery and Lamar Patterson among his clients.

Now Majors is pumping out workout videos to clients.

I am surely going to remain in business, he said, and maybe get better.

Gyms are closed throughout Pennsylvania and most of the country. That means trainers who work at gyms, generally independent contractors, are taking a serious hit.

It's going to have a huge financial impact, Dan Cless, a trainer at Hempfield Rec Center, said last week.

If we have two weeks of down time, obviously, we don't make any money.

But as much as any profession, trainers are embracing online technology to take their service to the client.

Success! An email has been sent with a link to confirm list signup.

Error! There was an error processing your request.

Cless uses training software to connect with his clients and create workouts for them. He also does at-home training.

Lancaster's Solid Rock Fitness and Health does almost exclusively in-home training, but that business has mostly dried up during the past couple of weeks.

So it has turned to online training, posting videos to a Facebook group.

The community aspect of it is really beautiful, said Solid Rock's owner, Valerie Petersheim.

Petersheim has engaged a nutritionist and yoga teacher to provide videos. The Facebook group is made up of mostly Lancaster County residents, although it includes members from as far away as Arizona and Florida.

It's a week-to-week thing, but I think it can sustain, Petersheim said. The mental and emotional benefit, right now, is as important as the physical.

Crunch Gym in Lancaster is offering a variety of workout videos to members, and also offering a 45-day free trial membership.

Universal Athletic Club in Manheim Township is offering a library of video workouts, many of them open to non-members, and live workouts utilizing the Zoom video teleconference software.

A week and a half ago, we were scratching our heads, wondering how we were going to pull this off, said Sheldon McBee, Universal's personal training director.

Now, we're thinking that when this is over, we're going to continue to use this technology.
