Wyze Teases Fitness Tracker Band With Alexa – ExtremeTech

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

Wyze has made its name by offering smart home gadgets at startlingly low prices compared to the big-name competitors. The company is now looking to branch out into smart wearables with the Wyze Band. It looks like a fairly standard fitness tracker, but it sports Amazon Alexa integration and (we assume) a low price tag.

Wyze sells products that hover around the $20 level. It has a 1080p security camera that rivals devices that cost five or ten times more. It also offers an $8 smart bulb that can do most of the same things as a $30 Philips Hue bulb. Likewise, Wyzes $20 smart home sensor kit undercuts the competition and adds functionality to the companys other devices. The smart home market is booming, and theres no clear leader. Wyzes attempt to break into wearables will be hampered by an entrenched oligarchy.

The company mentioned this new fitness wearable in a blog post about its upcoming products. However, it didnt include any details beyond the name. However, Zatznotfunny managed to unearth some additional details from the beta Wyze app. The device looks a lot like the Fitbit Charge with its tall, narrow screen built into the band. The touchscreen will be color, supporting custom backgrounds and various clock designs. The display will probably be LCD, considering Wyzes commitment to low prices.

The device will, of course, track fitness stats like heart rate and steps. Wyze will attempt to set its wearable apart from other budget offerings with Alexa integration. Youll be able to control Wyze devices from the Wyze Band but also all the other internet-connected gadgets that work with Alexa. Theres a microphone, but its unclear if youll have a speaker for verbal replies. Fitbit also added support for Alexa to the Versa 2, which didnt have a speaker. However, the future of that venture is unclear now that Google is acquiring the company. Presumably, future Fitbit devices will have Google Assistant instead.

Wyze says it has completed preliminary user testing of the Band and will work to incorporate feedback into the device. It hopes to begin a beta test in the coming weeks, after which it will prepare for a final launch. Thats probably at least a few months out. Wyze may find it tough to grab a piece of the wearable market even at lower prices. Apple holds the lions share of sales, and Googles control of Fitbit gives it another big chunk. Meanwhile, Wyze is coming off of an embarrassing data breach that could scare some buyers away.

This At-Home Boxing Workout Is Only 6 Moves and Requires No Gloves We’re Sold! – POPSUGAR

Looking for a workout to burn major calories, sculpt your upper and lower body, and slash stress? Then it's time you give boxing a try for a one-stop sweat that will leave you feeling good from the inside out. In fact, thanks to the high-intensity interval training (HIIT) aspect of boxing, you're likely to feel happier after a workout. Research published in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology found that HIIT workouts trigger more opioid release (aka, endorphins) than other types of workouts.

Even if you don't have a punching bag or belong to a boxing studio yet, you can do your own killer boxing workout at home without any equipment at all. Try this six-move plan from Miami-based trainer Christa DiPaolo, creator of Boxing & Bubbles, for a hard-hitting routine that will get your heart rate up and your aggression out.

This routine is also great for a beginner who isn't quite ready to beat up a bag (once you are ready, make sure to protect your hands with a pair of quick wraps). But no matter what fitness level you are, this plan is fun and effective. So let's get started: you'll do each move for about one minute with a 20 to 30 second rest in between moves. Repeat the entire circuit for two rounds for a full-body fighting workout.

New Fitness Studio in Olympia Geared Toward Female Fitness – ThurstonTalk

Tiffany Krueger and Joanna Sather know how to guide a body into good health. Collectively, theyve been doing it for over two decades as Certified Personal Trainers and Certified Group Fitness Instructors. As females in the fitness industry, they recognize the need for female-centric fitness and have created a new fitness studio in Olympia, Athena Fitness and Wellness, that is redefining feminine fitness. Through small group training, large group fitness classes, wellness services, and a community of women for support, working out in Thurston County never felt so good.

Historically, Athena was the Greek goddess of wisdom. Their logo, an owl, was often a sign of the goddess, who was a symbol of sisterhood, power and courage. These are the characteristics that Tiffany and Joannas fitness studio on Pacific Avenue is bursting with, and the bright and airy space is a joint venture between a team of five investors and their spouses.

The fitness studio is open to everyone, with no exclusions, but the exercises and wellness services are targeted toward the female body. The female body is different than the male body, and it needs to be trained that way, Tiffany says. The education that we provide for body care, hormones, nutrition all of that, is geared toward females.

Athena is also doing something very different from other studios in the area, and is deeply and genuinely focused on creating connections. Over our years in the fitness industry, Tiffany says, we have seen how women need a community of other women for support, because thats really the number one thing to keep people coming back. We are doing fitness here yes, but really the number one thing we are doing is building community.

Joanna experienced the power of community support three years ago when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Feeling connected and supported was so important in treatment and recovery, she says, as well as with living life after cancer and dealing with the side effects of ongoing treatment and anxieties.

The fitness community helped Joanna stay active and keep wellness a priority. After eight surgeries in two years, shes also learned what its like to rest and take care of her body and to come back to fitness in a gentle way. Shes looking forward to passing this knowledge on to others at Athena.

Athena offers many different fitness styles. Small group personal training is led by Certified Personal Trainers who lead the daily workouts throughout the day, on the hour. These classes are limited to no more than 16. The cross-training workout is circuit-style and uses TRX suspension training, kettlebells, slam balls and more. Three different variations are offered throughout the week.

The large group fitness classes can accommodate up to 30 people and are led by Certified Group Fitness Instructors. They use Les Mills Group Fitness repertoire and offer BODYPUMP, BODYCOMBAT, BODYFLOW, CXWORX, and BODYSTEP. Athena is the only fitness studio in our area to offer LES MILLS GRIT Strength and LES MILLS GRIT Cardio, 30-minute high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts.

Athena also offers dance fitness in a class created by Athena instructor, Rebecca. High energy dance fitness and athletic inspired moves are combined in an easy-to-follow class. Or, slow it down a little with a gentle yoga class designed to increase strength, flexibility and equanimity.

Athena recognizes that overall wellness is more than just working out and provides services that complement the experience. A Licensed Massage Practitioner will be on staff, in addition to a Certified Nutritionist.

Inside Athena will be our areas first Himalayan Salt Room, encompassing over 6,000 pounds of salt. With walls lined with Himalayan salt blocks and over three inches of granulated salt on the floor, it also has a halogenerator that, regulates the amount of salt microparticles in the air, Tiffany says, so youre breathing salt.

Salt is antimicrobial and antibacterial. It strengthens and expands lung function, is good for skin, and helps detoxify the body. Our cells move things by chemical charges, Tiffany shares, and the radiation we receive from Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G even radio frequencies, disrupts our body on a cellular level. She says the salt room helps to neutralize these electromagnetic frequencies by offering a negatively-charged source of grounding. It heals you from the inside out.

Tiffany and Joanna see the importance of offering salt therapy to the whole community and anyone may access this one-of-kind salt room with a small fee, even if they are not members of the fitness studio. The salt room is also ADA accessible.

Athena offers a supervised play space for children six-months to seven-years-old. Childcare can be booked in advance in predetermined time slots for a drop-in rate or a monthly unlimited rate, but care can only be utilized for two hours per day. We dont really want you working out more than two hours a day anyway, Tiffany says. At Athena its about being kind, loving and gentle to bodies.

Athena also offers a designated space for older or independent children. There will be a table where they can work on homework or activities, while observing a valuable life lesson when they see their mothers and caregivers making space for themselves, connecting, and taking care of their bodies.

February 27, at 5:00 p.m. the community is invited to a ribbon-cutting with Mayor Ryder and the Lacey Chamber of Commerce. Therell be refreshments, a raffle with prizes, including a one-year membership to Athena. Childcare will be open, and at 6:30 p.m. therell be a pop-up fitness dance class.

Athena uses the MindBody app where you can reserve space in a class, schedule childcare and process payments. A full schedule of offerings is available on their website and through MindBody. Visit the Athena website for details or call 360-515-5723. Your first class is always free.

We recognize the deep need for connection in general, Tiffany says. Were shopping online, were working out online, were doing everything online but we are designed to connect as humans. When we are working out together, and we smile at each other, that releases positive neuro-transmitters that have a full-body effect, and thats real.

Akin Akman’s Aarmy Might Be Next Great Group Fitness Cult – GQ

If youve got $40 or so to spend on a fitness class, youre not hurting for options in Manhattans tiny NoHo neighborhood. Theres SoulCycle, of course, or Mile High Run Club if you prefer the treadmill. Theres Barrys Bootcamp and Bar Method and Work Train Fight. If you want to box, theres Overthrow Boxing Club, Rumble, and Bia Force. If youd rather bang out some sun salutations, theres a Yoga Vida. If you simply cannot decide between yoga and boxing, theres Box and Flow, which combines the two. It might be the greatest concentration of upscale fitness studios in the world.

But none of these studios have Akin Akman. Hes a co-founder and the chief fitness officer of Aarmy, the newest arrival to the neighborhood. Hes a trainer, sure, but to many people, he is also a spiritual leader and a guru and a guiding light. I first heard about him on a blind date with a guy who works at Nike, who told me over beers about a famous SoulCycle instructor, one whose followers call themselves Akins Army. I looked him up after and discovered that he had recently left SoulCycle to co-found a cycling slash bootcamp pop-up training facility with Angela Davis, an inspirational speaker and fellow former SoulCycle instructor, a favorite of Oprah and Beyonc, along with Trey Laird, the founder of the creative agency Laird+Partners. Already, Aarmy inductees include Usher and Janelle Mone (there is also an Aarmy pop-up in L.A.).

So I signed up for one of the 40 practices (classes) that Akman coaches (teaches) a week. Up until my visit to Aarmy, I had managed to go through life without ever having taken a spin class. Almost everyone I spoke with used the word energy to describe why they prefer Akmans style and ethos, but it is precisely the energy of spin that scares me. The whooping, the lights. All the beautiful people.

At first, Akmans class seemed no different. As two employees helped buckle in my shoes, the riders all around me whipped their towels in the air like Petey Pablo. But it didnt take long for me to be won over, to let go and appreciate Akmans philosophy: he wants to pull out my greatness. He wants to speak to my mind and my heart and get to the bottom of who I am and what makes me tick. He believes I am an athlete even though I can barely run a mile or do five push-ups and sometimes get winded walking up the stairs to my apartment. It was clear the rest of the group had already bought in: in between hills or sprints, when Akman delivered an at ease, soldiers, nobody rolled their eyesthey gave each other high-fives. Akman spoke to us about reaching our potential and finding our joy and being blessed to live our beautiful lives. An actual spotlight shined on him.

Afterwards, I sat down with Akman on the cycling stage, while the cleaning crew wiped down the bikes. He is possibly the only person I have met who looks better sweating than not. He told me the army began a decade ago, when he was teaching at a Crunch gym in New York. His classes were so well-liked that if he subbed out to take a modeling gig, chaos would ensue. So he started a Facebook page called Akins Army so his followers could be better informed of his schedule. Akman, now 32, got so into the idea that he even screen-printed tank tops at American Apparel for his soldiers. By the time he moved to SoulCycle in 2013, his classes booked in two minutes. He left this past summer because he didnt see any upward mobility.

He had been watching my (incorrect) technique and offered some tips. As he spoke, he looked me right in the eye. I wasnt expecting to be converted. Im not the type of person to buy into daily affirmations. My eyes glaze over whenever I hear the word community, as I did several times when talking to people about Aarmy. I try to avoid anything hyped up on endorphins or pedaling contrived happiness: Disneyland or Bachelorette parties. But all of this makes me Aarmy's exact target novice. There are a lot of cynics in the worldAkman wants them to see the color in their lives.

As I was leaving, he slapped me on the back and welcomed me into the army. And in the following days, as the pain in my knees subsided, I found myself wanting to return. Yes, the class had been a great workout as everyone told me it would. But really, I just wanted Akman to pull out a little more greatness.

Why fitness trackers may not give you all the ‘credit’ you hoped for – Jakarta Post

January is a time when many people make resolutions and then break them. Almost 60% of Americans will resolve to exercise more, but fewer than 10% will stick with their resolution. A key to keeping resolutions is ensuring they are measurable, and a simple way to track activity is through a wearable smartwatch or fitness tracker. Indeed, almost one in five adults has used a fitness tracker.

Wearable fitness trackers can also help improve medical care by providing insights into physical activity, heart rate, location and sleep patterns. My research team uses wearable fitness tracker data with smart home sensors to help older adults live safely and independently. We also study wearable fitness tracker data along with electronic medical records and genomic data to investigate the causes of gestational diabetes. Many other researchers utilize wearable fitness trackers to better understand how lifestyles can impact health.

Unfortunately, Ive found in my health informatics research that wearable devices may not give all the credit their users deserve, and in some cases, users may want to consider how secure and private their data is.

Giving credit when its due

People who use fitness trackers have been frustrated with how they get credit for their activities, which drives some users to abandon fitness trackers. In my research teams work, we find that people who have limited arm movement report that fitness trackers are not accurately recording their activities. This can happen as well with those who do not have traditional gaits because they may shuffle.

The lack of credit is especially obvious when people are walking but keeping their arms still such as pushing a stroller or walking while holding an infant. New mothers also report accuracy issues with respect to their sleep patterns. When they wake up multiple times a night, the next morning the device will show them as lightly sleeping. This is frustrating when the new mother wants to use this data to negotiate with her partner on child care because a device may credit the mother with more sleep than she actually gets.

These inaccuracies make sense from a technical point of view. When people keep their wrists still, as in pushing a stroller, the wrist is not changing directions. Thus, the software cannot detect changes in movement from the accelerometer sensor on a wrist tracker which is looking for changes in up-down, forward-backward and side-to-side movements. Researchers have also shown that 500 or fewer steps can be recorded without wearing the device, reflecting how devices can over count activity sometimes. In the case of detecting sleep, most people do not wake up multiple times a night, so the algorithms used by wearable devices may throw these short bursts of movement away.

The companies that make these wearable devices have significant intellectual property involved in detecting these movements and then using algorithms to decide how much people are moving or sleeping, so these algorithms are not shared publicly. There currently do not exist any mechanisms to give feedback on what was detected. Imagine if a person could push a button and tell a wearable fitness device, I did wake up three times tonight!

Since people are not getting the credit they deserve for some of their activities, I am concerned about what type of lifestyle data we researchers can accurately assess from a commodity wearable for our health research. In computing, there is a saying, Garbage in, garbage out. If wearable fitness trackers are putting inaccurate step and sleep data into the algorithms that quantify our activities, then people will be making health-related decisions based on inaccurate data.

Who has the data?

Typically, consumers assess how much credit they are getting from a fitness tracker by transferring the data to an app. Most people likely assume that when people transfer the data to the app, the data is not shared widely. Users may assume, for instance, that they can see the data, people they shared data with can view it and the company who has the device and app can see the data. But this is only part of the story.

A company, however, could change its terms of service which, studies have shown, people have difficulty understanding and decide to make this health data available to third parties. For example, wearable fitness data could be sold to help our employers understand our fitness and productivity or insurance companies to assist with or deny health coverage. Although theres no evidence of this practice being done, I believe consumers would do well to be aware that it is a possibility in the future.

Glenmore Elementary School families gather for a night of fun and fitness – ConchoValleyHomepage.com

Posted: Feb 20, 2020 / 06:44 PM CST / Updated: Feb 20, 2020 / 06:44 PM CST

SAN ANGELO, Texas Glenmore Elementary School families gathered for a night of fun and fitness at the school Thursday evening.

At the elementary gym, parents and students participated in cardio drumming, zumba, a fun run and more. It was all to raise heart awareness during the month of February.

Different vendors such as Shannon Medical Center, The Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service and more helped with the event to promote physical activity and healthy cooking options.

This is the first time the school hosts Family Fun Night to bring families together in a healthy environment.

Its so great that theyre having fun here. With this cold weather, we might not be getting outside. Theyre smiling in there, the parents are encouraging them. Hopefully they take that home, or on the weekends at the park they take the exercises they learn here and use them at the park, said Tabitha Farmer, the P.E. Coach at the school.

Coach Farmer said the school is looking to make Family Fun Night a yearly event.
