Fun and Fitness in the Sun, Wodapalooza Draws Big Crowds – Morning Chalk Up

Wodapalooza Miami started in 2012, as a 1-day competition with 145 athletes, and has now become the worlds premier functional fitness festival. Spectators and competitors now travel from around the world for the four-day event every February. Its the most highly-attended Sanctional of the CrossFit season and offers elite athletes a rich prize purse.

Being on the ground in Bayfront Park, the site of the event, it feels like more than that though. Heres how a few of the spectators described the draw of Wodapalooza on Thursday:

Fan favorites, the Buttery Bros. premiered their newest documentary The Fittest on Wednesday evening before the start of the competition at a Miami theatre packed with CrossFit enthusiasts. They have a big presence at the event and heres how they described it:

By the numbers: Theres no doubt that Wodapalooza has grown in popularity and participation. Its the flagship event for Loud And Live, who will host five Sanctionals in total this season. According to Loud And Live media director, Kristin Chandler Toth, there are 2700 athletes competing in the event this year across all divisions, an increase of 750 from 2019. And Matthew OKeefe, President of Loud And Live Sports, estimates that there will be approximately 40-45,000 spectators across all four days, an increase of as many as 10,000 from last year.

The words of CrossFit Lorton affiliate owner, Hanna Hawkins, who is making her second trip the event, but first as a competitor, encapsulate OKeefes sentiments perfectly:

Planet Fitness to be major tenant in old Dillon’s building – The Derby Informer

Planet Fitness will be the anchor tenant in the renovation and redevelopment of the former Dillons store at the southwest corner of East Madison and North Rock Road, according to one of the leasing agents.

There has been speculation that the business was possible for Derby. Now the signing of it was confirmed by Mattie Crossland, director of real estate for the Crossland Realty Group in Columbus, Kan.

Crossland said that her company and its officials were pleased about landing the national fitness chain as a tenant and helping to grow Derby as well as assisting in filling a long-empty building.

We believe community members are excited for retail to return to this corner and, so far, the response to the development has been overwhelmingly positive, Crossland said in an email. Having access to health and fitness facilities is important to a thriving community.

This would be the fifth Planet Fitness in the metro area. No opening date was provided, however, the building renovation will be complete by this summer.

Other business spaces available

Crossland Realty Group and J.P. Weigand are partnering to lease spaces in the 52,551-square-foot building. The contractor is Crossland Construction and the architect is GLMV Architecture.

As designed, the new design will offer retail, entertainment, and restaurant space. Crossland said it will give the local area an updated look with new storefronts, faade, and patio hardscaping.

The hope is that the development will give the corner new life, she said.

Currently, work is underway at the building and a $450,000 city building permit has been taken out to remodel the shell. Work had previously been done on the roof. When completed, the value of the work will be in the $1 million-plus range.

According to county property tax records, the building has an appraisal of $1.5 million.

The structure was built in 1992 and housed two antique markets after Dillons left to open a larger store in the Derby Marketplace. The last antique market concept closed in January 2017.

Founded in 1992, Hampton, N.H.-based Planet Fitness has more than 1,800 outlets. By locations and membership, it is one of the larger fitness and health clubs along with being among the fastest growing. Its a franchise system and thelocal franchisee is Chris Sutherland. There are locations throughout the United States and in four foreign countries. Its known for its overall low monthly membership fees and its marketing as a judgement free zone designed to attract beginning and casual fitness center customers. A public company, its stock is traded under the symbol PLNT.

An Instagram fitness star edited photos of herself to show how the ‘perfect’ body would look throughout the decades – msnNOW

Sia Cooper / Instagram

Instagram fitness star Sia Cooper posted a series of edited pictures to her 1.1 million followers that emphasized the unrealistic beauty ideals women have been chasing forever.

She showed what the "perfect" female body looked like throughout the decades, from the "Roaring 20s" to the "Postmodern Beauty" era of today.

In her post, Cooper said the preferred body type in the 1920s was "all about boyish."

"Women even opted for short hair," she said. "Boobs and waists didn't matter and women felt liberated as they were."

The "Hollywood Era" of the 1950s idealized Marilyn Monroe's curves, because society didn't care so much about weight, Cooper said, "but a slimmer waist was ideal."

The "Swinging 60s and 70s" was where the "twig" body style was introduced, she said, thanks to famous model Twiggy, so "women wanted a thin and girly, adolescent appearance."

Catwalks and supermodels became the ideal in the 80s, with Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford.

"Lean and tall legs and an athletic body type were ideal," Cooper said. "This was also when fitness started hitting big."

This led onto the 90s, which emphasized the androgynous look, followed by "Postmodern Beauty" today where "big boobs and butts and flat tummies are on the rise," Cooper said.

"Women also turn to plastic surgery to achieve their desired look," she said. "Women are unhappier than ever with their appearance."

Cooper used to struggle with comparing herself to the celebrities and Victoria's Secret models in magazines, fronting the idea of what women wanted to look like. She told Insider this obsession with being thin led to her developing bulimia at age 14.

"Today, I find myself sometimes comparing, but I stop myself in my tracks because I know better," she said. "If you have social media, chances are that you are or have dealt with it, too."

Cooper said speaking about body image has been something she's always been passionate about, and she's always fought the "ideal" body type that's constantly pushed on social media. She has been openly outspoken against causes she cares about on her Instagram such as excessive plastic surgery and "mom-shaming."

She said she wanted to open people's eyes to "how ridiculous our society" has become, expecting women to be thin with a big butt and full lips, then flip-flopping between favoring a super skinny physique or a curvier build every few years.

"I kept seeing the trend changing from thin back to thicker and back to thin again every 10 years or so," she said.

Cooper added that trying to achieve perfection is damaging, because it simply doesn't exist. She was miserable when she was underweight at 105 lbs, and wanted to keep losing weight to try and chase this ideal she was never going to reach.

"We are literally starving ourselves for the impossible," she said. "Even when you reach your goal weight, you sometimes feel as if it's not good enough."

Further dangers are diet pills, diuretics, and over-exercising, which all hurt your health - not to mention plastic surgery. Beauty procedures can help boost someone's confidence in the short term, but the effect can soon start to wear off if it was just a quick fix solution. To be effective, surgery has to be a decision that's made as part of a long journey to build self-love.

Cooper had her breast implants removed over a year ago due to breast implant illness. She went under the knife initially to give her self-esteem a boost - something she now regrets.

"We need to learn to accept and cope the healthy ways such as balance, a good diet with fats, proteins, and carbs, and aiming for 30 minutes of activity a day," she said. "No pills or nip-tucks needed."

Suspected carjacker shot by deputy and off-duty HPD commander near LA Fitness in Spring – KHOU.com

SPRING, Texas A carjacking suspect was shot multiple times Wednesday evening outside an LA Fitness in Spring.

A Precinct 4 deputy and an off-duty HPD commander fired multiple shots, according to Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo.

It started when the Precinct 4 deputy answered a suspicious person call at the Popeye's at 20035 Holzwarth.

The suspect took off on foot and ran from the Popeye's to a Home Depot to the LA Fitness.

Along the way, the suspect tried to carjack several citizens in an attempt to get away, Acevedo said.

"They tried to Tase him several times ... and at some point, he ran into the gym," Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman said.

"One of our off-duty commanders was in the gym working out when the suspect came in armed with a knife and caused a disturbance," Acevedo said.

When the suspect ran back outside, the off-duty officer joined the foot chase.

"The suspect actually turned on the constable and threatened him with a knife at which point they both discharged several rounds," Acevedo said.

The man was taken by ambulance to an area hospital. There's no word on his condition but the chief said he's expected to survive.

The deputy fell and broke his wrist. He was released from the hospital Wednesday night and is expected to be OK.

Hot New Trend In NYC Fitness: Exercising In The Cold – KTVZ

Click here for updates on this story

NEW YORK (WCBS ) One fitness studio is giving hot workouts the cold shoulder, putting into practice that exercising in frigid temperatures could actually burn more calories.

Princess Sutherland is not a cold-weather person, but despite that, shes trying something new: a workout class where the thermostat is set to a chilly 50 degrees, reports CBS2s Michael George.

It was out of my comfort zone, I said let me try that, she said.

The class is called Brrrn with an emphasis on the brrr offering high intensity in low temperatures.

The theory is that working out in the cold is more refreshing and can help you burn more calories, says co-founder Jimmy T. Martin.

Our whole thesis is that we want you to sustain a higher intensity for a longer period of time and cooler temperatures do that for you, he said.

Instructors say the frigid temperatures also trigger the bodys metabolism to keep you warm.

If you dont have a class like this in your neighborhood, there are still some ways you can get all the benefits of a cold-weather workout.

You can go for what we call a shiver walk, so like, dress with light layers, go for a walk around your block, do some calisthenics, said Martin.

After her first try, Princess says shes convinced.

It was just high intensity from the start, she said. It felt better breathing in there, and it just feels refreshed when you stopped working out.

Experts say exercising outside in cooler weather can also boost your mood and immunity during cold and flu season.

Prevention’s 2020 Fitness Awards – Best Fitness Gear to Buy This Year – Prevention.com

Mike Garten

Sometimes the hardest part of working out is just putting on your shoes, or so goes a modern-day exercise adage. But knowing you have the right gear can make getting started a heck of a lot easier. To help you get motivated and benefit the most from your workouts, we tried dozens of pieces of fitness gear: Podiatrists weighed in on shoes, and everyday exercisers worked out at home, outdoors, and in gyms. After four weeks of testing, our team has determined these to be best in class. Now lets get moving!

BEST TRAIL RUNNERS

These trail runners have a roomy toe box, allowing feet to splay naturally (it accommodates bunions and hammertoes too). Grace Torres-Hodges, D.P.M., noted that they have good heel counters, a sturdy shank (the supportive material between the insole and outsole), and great tread traction for tough terrain.

BEST RUNNING SHOES

While your best pair of kicks depends largely on you and the features of your feet, our podiatrists, who evaluated the materials and the overall level of support in the shoes we selected, said these had especially great cushioning and motion-control features for running. Dr. Torres-Hodges said they had firm heel counters that would cradle feet to prevent pronation (rolling inward) and sturdy midsoles to help keep feet in place while in motion.

BEST CROSS-TRAINING SHOES

$129.00

Whether youre lifting, running, or climbing, these sneakers stand up to high-intensity activity thanks to their abrasion-resistant uppers. They also boast medial guardsa hallmark of good cross-training shoesto prevent ankle injuries during side-to-side action, says Jay Bhuta, D.P.M. Another standout feature: their versatile soles, which offer traction for indoor and outdoor workouts.

BEST WALKING SHOES

$75.00

Ever wonder why your knees and lower back get achy? It could be from wearing unsupportive shoes. Dr. Bhuta liked these sneakers for their heel-to-toe cushioning, which helps absorb shock, and because their roominess will accommodate orthotics, which can add further relief for feet and knees. They have built-in stability features in the midfoot and forefoot so feet will stay aligned with each step.

BEST GYM BAG

$155.00

The organizing compartments in this duffel bag made it a clear winner with our testers: The shoe bag, laptop sleeve, interior zip pocket, mesh pouch, and exterior phone pocket are specifically made to fit everything you need to get to the gym and home again.

BEST SMART WATCH

$249.00

This next-level smart watch can track everything from your steps to your heart rate, but standout features include the ability to give you insight about your stress level.

BEST WIRELESS HEADPHONES

With high-quality sound and a comfy fit, these wireless headphones will stay on even when youre running up and down steps and on uneven terrain. They also are resistant to sweat and provide up to six hours of tunes.

BEST WATER BOTTLE

Swells eye-catching designs are proof that you can work super hard and look great doing it: The insulated walls in this stainless steel water bottle help keep liquids cool for up to 24 hours. Testers also liked how this bottle was slim enough to fit into many compartments, from a gym bag pocket to a car cup holder.

BEST WORKOUT TANK

$65.00

It turns out theres a happy medium between a full-length tank and a crop top, and this is it. It hits just above the waist without exposing your midriff, making it feel light and breathable. The mesh material around the neck and the racerback design increase airflow to the chest and underarms, the areas in which people tend to overheat most.

BEST SPORTS BRA

$24.97

Designed with a supportive and comfortably snug fit, this sports bra was easy to slip on and take off (big plus: no struggling to peel it off after a sweaty workout!). Testers also liked how it absorbed moisture during intense hot-yoga classes and kept their girls in place while they did box jumps, side hops, and other high-intensity moves.

BEST LEGGINGS

One tester said she wanted to live in these high-waisted leggingsand that she wasnt exaggerating. They are particularly soft and smooth against the skin, even during the sweatiest workouts. Petite women liked that the 7/8 length hit their ankles perfectly, and they were flattering for a variety of body types.

BEST SOCKS

The sweat-wicking material in these socks helps keep feet dry and odor-free, while the cushioning in the heels and arches provides support to these shock-absorbing areas. Testers liked that they didnt slip and that the cuffs stayed secure around their ankles.

BEST JACKET

This warm yet breathable half-zip pullover, made with polyester and spandex, is perfect for outdoor walks or runs. The side pockets can easily store keys, some cash, and a smartphone, and the thumbholes on the sleeves help seal in heat.

BEST DUMBBELLS

$329.00

Ranging from five to 52.5 pounds, these adjustable dumbbells replace 15 sets of weights. Heres how it works: Keeping the weights on their plates, simply turn the dial to choose the amount of weight you want to lift. Then remove them from the plates to start exercising. Theyre great for working out at home without feeling as if your living room is a gym.

BEST RESISTANCE BANDS

$9.99

Testers loved that these resistance bands were soft to the touch and didnt irritate their skin when they did lower-body exercises like squats and glute kick-backs. Theyre light and small enough to pack too.

BEST KETTLEBELL

While there are plenty of kettlebells out there, we chose this model for its smooth grip and easy-to-maneuver design. Its conventional shape lends itself to practicing proper form with moves like the dead clean, the swing, and shoulder presses.

BEST YOGA MAT

$57.98

This yoga mat has a textured design that provides extra grip, cushioning, and durability for high-impact exercises. Its dense material offers support for sensitive knees and other joints and absorbs sweat easily, keeping the surface safe for free movement.

BEST POST-WORKOUT MASSAGER

$79.95

Excellent for targeting harder-to-reach areas of the body, this massage ball has three levels of vibration that helped loosen our testers stiff muscles and relieve cramps.

BEST FOAM ROLLER

Foam rolling helps relieve tension and prepare the body for exercise, and it works to alleviate soreness post-workout as well. This foam roller is medium density (somewhat firm with some give), making it easier to apply pressure to relieve knots in muscles and work on trigger points. Its 18-inch length is enough to let you foam-roll your upper back and shoulders as well as your glutes, quads, and calves.

Car-fire murders: Failed rugby player envied athlete wife’s fitness and was a ‘master manipulator’ – MEAWW

The parents of a woman who, along with her children, was burned alive by her estranged husband have revealed that he was a master manipulator who had been abusive and controlling throughout their 11-year relationship.

Rowan Charles Baxter, 42, killed his three children Aaliyah, 6, Laianah, 4, and Trey, 3, and his wife Hannah Clarke, 31, earlier this week when he doused her white Kia Sportage with petrol and set it on fire while they were still inside.

Later, he ran back to the car, took a knife and fatally stabbed himself before authorities could reach the horrific scene in the then quiet Camp Hill neighborhood in Brisbane's southeast. Clarke had managed to escape the fire but succumbed to her injuries at the Royal Brisbane and Womens hospital less than 24 hours later.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Clarke's parents, Lloyd and Suzanne, revealed that Baxter had been abusive and manipulative throughout their relationship and had always tried to isolate her from her friends and family so he could control her.

"We always had misgivings about him," Suzanne shared. "He was always controlling, he ruined her relationship with everyone, even tried to get her away from us. We'd go down to the beach and if they turned up and saw us there, they would go to another."

She also said Baxter, who never found success as a rugby player despite being signed to the NRL's New Zealand Warriors, had been jealous of her daughter, who was a champion athlete who had won gold medals in trampoline.

"He was jealous of her sporting success and when she beat him in CrossFit. He had a chip on his shoulder because he didn't make it as an NRL player," she said, adding that he "split her apart from her brother" and "wore her down" during their marriage.

Clarke reportedly decided she had had enough in November, when, with the help of her parents, she secretly left Baxter and took their three children with her. Their situation spiraled out of control from there, culminating in this week's horrific quadruple-murder suicide.

Baxter, who was allowed to see the children only on some weekends, is said to have been pushing for 50 percent custody, and in December, kidnapped one of the kids and ran away for four days before police tracked him down.

Then, three weeks ago, Baxter assaulted Clarke in her front yard by grabbing her wrist and twisting her arm behind her back, hurting her shoulder. He had been forbidden from going near her after the incident but was allowed to return home.

Suzanne said many people bought into Baxter's act that he was the victim because he was good at making them feel he had been "hard done by" in his relationship despite being the abuser.

"Everyone thought they had a great family because he projected this image on social media with all these sweet pictures and saying he couldn't live without her," she said. "It was all a facade."

He was scheduled to go to court again on April 8 but decided to take drastic action against his wife and three children this past Wednesday, February 19. Her parents said they are perplexed about how he managed to get to her despite the domestic violence order.

"We still don't know how he got so close," Suzanne said. "He's obviously ambushed her somehow, I'm sure she would not have stopped for him, she would be more likely to try to run over him."

"He had to hurt us because we'd beaten him. He was spiraling and had run out of people to sponge off. Looks like all of a sudden he decided there was only one way out."

Five Ways to Improve Your Skills and Career Prospects as a Fitness Trainer – Student Assembly of the State University of New York

Pursuing a healthy lifestyle and taking good care of ones body is a goal towards which many people aspire. If youve dedicated yourself to physical fitness and proper nutrition, you could have a great career opportunity as a trainer. But what are the prospects for career growth and advancement in such a profession? You may find that the answer depends mainly on your initiative for self-improvement; here are some key areas to work on.

Many people who decided to become full- or part-time professional fitness trainers have taken this career path as a natural continuation of their commitment to physical exercise and healthy nutrition. However, this is just one subset of the full range of skills and knowledge that may prove useful in this field. Taking a health coach diploma course will give you more in-depth expertise in many aspects, help to fill in any knowledge gaps, and give you a better understanding of how to tailor your coaching approach to different age groups and individual client lifestyles or needs.

In any profession, improving your communication skills will prove a valuable asset in your career growth, but this is especially true when youre working as a fitness trainer. Excellent communication is crucial for success in your relationship with each client. As a coach, youll only be able to achieve the desired results when youre able to connect with them, motivating them to push themselves, play to their strengths, and work on their weaknesses.

Hone your management skill

Being an expert coach can help your clients achieve their fitness goals, but its not the only skill you need to drive your success. Whether youre working for a gym or fitness club, or as an independent trainer, learning the skills of proper management will expand your opportunities for career growth. Youll learn how to bring in new clients and retain existing ones, work within a budget, supervise other trainers, cover your operations with professional liability insurance, and other essentials of running a business.

Entrepreneurs know that one of the best ways to ensure the success of a business startup is to identify an under-served sector of the market and fill its needs. You may enjoy similar positive results if you look beyond the familiar areas where you train, and find locations with more potential clients. For example, instead of competing with other trainers in a busy urban centre, operating out of facilities in the suburbs can make you more accessible to a higher number of clients who dont venture far from their homes.

Thinking like a business owner can help you in many ways, perhaps most of all in terms of marketing yourself. Not all trainers match their dedication to fitness with a similar investment of time and effort in promoting their services. Dont miss out on the added revenue you could be earning; learn how to increase your exposure in the channels where it matters most. From establishing a personal website and social media presence to participating in community events where you can give out brochures and business cards, there are many ways to get creative and reach out to a broader audience.

Making a career out of your passion for fitness training is viable, as people are increasingly in search of guidance towards a healthy lifestyle. Work on these aspects to set yourself apart and maximize the opportunities that come your way.
