‘Peloton Wife’ helped spur holiday sales for the fitness brand – AdAge.com

It was the gift that kept on giving. Pelotons widely panned holiday ad campaign, called The Gift That Gives Back, might have helped juice sales after all. The New York-based fitness brand reported stellar second-quarter earnings on Wednesday.

Revenue rose 77 percent over the year-earlier period to $466.3 million, while the number of connected fitness subscribers, who pay to stream classes, grew 96 percent to more than 712,000. Peloton counts 2 million members in total.

However, the brand was not profitable for the quarterit reported a net loss of $55.4 million. In addition, Pelotons stock was trending down in evening trading as Peloton issued a third-quarter forecast that was lower than expected by investors. The company went public late last year with an initial price of $29 a share.

In a letter to investors, Peloton cited the strength of its home-trial, where users can take 30 days to try merchandise, as a big driver of sales. Executives also cited the holiday bike campaign as reaching a wide audience of potential buyers.

On a call with analysts, Peloton Chief Financial Officer Jill Woodworth said the strong holiday was driven by our largest omni-channel marketing program to date. In the quarter, Peloton reported a 61 percent rise in sales and marketing expenses to $160.5 million.

The anthem commercial, which Peloton debuted in early December as part of its holiday campaign, showcased a wide-eyed, slender woman keeping a video diary of her Peloton journey for her husband, who gave her the bike. Critics said the woman was already quite trim, and that her husband should not expect her to be more so. One expert even called the spot a male fantasy ad designed for men to get skinnier spouses.

But Peloton disputed such complaints, noting that it had received positive feedback from members about the campaign, which was created by ad agency Mekanism. Indeed, the brand enjoys a cult following of fans, which includes David Kepron, the VP of global design strategies for premium distinctive brands at Marriott International. Kepron admittedly gushed about Peloton while interviewing a senior VP from the exercise brand on stage at the recent National Retail Federation annual Big Show conference about connecting with consumers. He did not ask about the controversial commercial.

The Gift spot was also a gift for Monica Ruiz, the actress who starred in the commercialshe later starred in a gin ad that poked fun at the hoopla surrounding her one-time turn as the Peloton Wife.

Earlier this week, Peloton said it had won its patent fight against competitor Flywheel, which had a similar product to Pelotons patented offerings. As part of the settlement, Flywheel agreed to stop using the technology in question for its Fly Anywhere home bikes.

This result reinforces the strength of our patent portfolio and reaffirms our lead as an innovation company operating at the intersection of fitness, technology and content," saidHisao Kushi, chief legal officer and co-founder of Peloton, in a statement.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo --- On this Fit Life, we're wrapping up our Fitness by the Decade series with a look at fitness in your 60's and beyond with Pamela Hernandez of Thrive Personal Fitness.

Here's what Pamela told us:

Your 60's and beyond are all about healthy active aging. The goal is to maintain strength and balance so you can keep doing all the things you want to do as well as complete the basic activities of daily life. That means focusing on functional training and balance.

For your cardio workouts, I recommend getting off the treadmill and getting outside. The uneven surfaces found in nature are a better training ground than the smooth stride of the treadmill or stationary bike. If you can't get outside, I would recommend classes like Zumba or Jazzercise that get you moving in all directions. Dance based movement will help with coordination and balance.

If you are not strength training, it is a must in your 60's. A simple way to add balance training to your workouts is to get off the bench or machine for upper body exercises like bicep curls and shoulder presses. Standing always engages more core and stabilizer muscles than sitting. If you are already sitting, try standing on one leg for an extra balance challenge.

You can also add balance training to lower body exercises by switching your weight from one leg to another. For example, you can add more balance work to a squat by alternating knee-ups. Step-ups are also another functional exercise that can challenge your balance.

The most important thing to consider is that it is never too late to start exercising. If you need to start strength training, find a certified professional who can start where you are and design a program based on your needs and abilities.

Teacher of the Year Awards Amphi PE teacher spreads joy of fitness Pat Parris 8:28 – KGUN

TUCSON, Ariz. - At Amphitheater High School you will find Kim Dickinson leading her physical education classes with enthusiasm and passion.

"The most gratifying part of my job is actually working with the students and seeing them reach their goals, said Dickinson. "Reach their fitness goals or their academic goals that they set in my class or their skills goals.

She is a finalist for the University of Arizona Online Outstanding High School Faculty Award.

Dickinson pushes her students with individual attention.

"Everyone's different and everyone has different levels, explained Dickinson. Just trying to find those certain levels, those certain passions of the students and really trying to bring that out."

Dickinson is proud of her program which allows her education students to teach the special needs students.

"I really have bridged the gap here with our special needs students and our general ed students in coming together. We participate in unified sports."

"I think that's probably my expertise, that I really enjoy. I find students that have higher goals and higher skills, and I really put them through where they actually become student teachers and they teach the class."

Kim Dickinson is one of nine finalists for the Outstanding Faculty Award. The winner will be announced in early March.

Heart & Soul Fitness To Help Family of 5 Year Old – The Evening Leader

Heart & Sole Fitness in St. Marys will be spreading the love on Feb. 15 with its Hero4Harper benefit.

The benefit will help 5-year-old Harper Huelskamp who was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome, which causes sensitivity to temperature, lights, wind and overstimulation and can trigger a prolonged seizure. To be able to help save Huelskamps life, her family invested in a seizure response dog, only to find out they had been scammed and the dog wasnt trained to provide her any of the services she needs.

They were dealt a pretty bad hand by those people who gave them an untrained dog, said Kathy Wallace, co-owner of Heart & Sole Fitness.

She and daughter/co-owner Chariti Moon are looking to lessen the cost for Huelskamps family to receive a properly-trained seizure response dog they need. Moon also has a chronically ill child and understand Huelskamps story all too well.

Heart & Sole is an aerial bungee studio and offers workouts that are great for low-impact cardio and easy on the joints, according to Wallace. She added its Barre classes are good for toning.

Every half an hour on Saturday, Bungee, Kangoo Jump Boots and Barre sessions will be available for attendees to try. Each session is $20 with all proceeds going to Huelskamp. The event is open to the public for anyone wanting to support a good cause and have fun while doing it.

We just want to help out and its important for a community to help those in need, said Wallace.

If all goes well, Wallace said shed like to host benefits for other individuals in the future.

A 50/50 drawing will also be going on during the benefit along with a bake sale. A 30-day membership to Heart & Sole will be available to win during the raffle; other items are still being arranged.

Wallace encourages anyone interested to message them through their Facebook page for which sessions theyd like to try. Jump Boots are an adult-only exercise and have a 250-pound weight limit.

Bungee also has a 250-pound weight limit; children who would like to try the bungee exercise must weight at least 40 pounds.

The obsession with posting workouts for praise is not a healthy fitness fad – The Guardian

If you want to develop obsessive tendencies, there is an app for that. There are several, in fact. You may have downloaded a bunch of them on 1 January in a rush of resolution-making.

Fitness apps such as Strava, MyFitnessPal and RunKeeper can be useful tools for motivating you to start and stick to a workout regime. But, according to a study at the National University of Ireland, Galway, these apps can also encourage obsessive attitudes towards exercise. The study, which observed 272 cyclists who use Strava, found that people who predominately use the tool to show off posting their workouts to receive praise, for example are more likely to develop an unhealthy compulsion and high stress levels.

I mean this politely, but duh! It seems obvious that being able to track and share the tiniest details of your workout may not always be a positive thing. I had an eating disorder as a teenager and, for a very unhappy time, data dominated my life. I weighed myself several times a day. I calculated everything from how many calories were in one bite of an apple to how many extra calories I would burn by exercising in cold weather. I used analogue, in-brain calculating technology to track all this. Had I had access to the plethora of health apps that are available now, it would have taken me much longer to recover not only because these kinds of tools enable obsessive behaviour, but because they normalise and even glamorise it.

The concurrent rise of wellness and self-tracking technology has ushered in a sort of socially sanctioned technorexia. We live in an age where you can never be too rich or too fit. Calorie-counting, which was once considered Bridget Jones-style silly at best and neurotic at worst (largely because it was coded female), is now celebrated as a data-driven route to self-improvement (largely because Silicon Valley has coded it male). It is harder to spot the symptoms associated with eating disorders when everyone seems to be fixated on their fitness stats. Also, because eating and exercise disorders are still associated with women, it is particularly easy for problematic behaviour among men to fly under the radar.

As the authors of the Strava study note, the adverse connection between these technologies and wellbeing has received little attention. Only a handful of studies hint at the dark side of these devices. A 2016 study of female Fitbit users by CNN, for example, found that 59% felt as if their routines were controlled by their device, while 30% said their Fitbit made them feel guilty. A 2015 study at Duke University in North Carolina found that tracking can reduce pleasure in the activity being quantified and make people do less of that activity when they are not measuring it. Enjoyable activities can become almost like a job, by focusing on the outcomes of things that used to be fun, noted one professor behind the study. Going for a long bike ride can cease to be a pleasure in itself but an achievement to boast about online.

I am not saying that fitness apps are a bad thing. I am sure most people use them positively. That includes me; now that I am fully recovered, I find that trying to do 10,000 steps a day is a fun nudge to get me off the couch. However, as health-tracking technology becomes increasingly ubiquitous even kids use fitness apps it is important to be aware that quantifying every aspect of our lives is not necessarily healthy.

When it comes to fitness in this city, Boston goes bigbecause we dont like going home. Fitness instructors and studio owners are constantly upping their game to offer up the best of the best to gym rats and weekend warriors alike. So when it comes to awarding the top fitness instructors in the city, its hard to imagine picking just one.

Thats why the users of the fitness booking platform ClassPass did it for us.

Every year for the past five years, ClassPasswhere you can book and buy classes to studios and gyms across the cityawards the top male and female instructors in each city, from Ann Arbor to Honolulu. This year, they decided to add a category for best studio, and also handed out awards for special categories like best amenities, best staff, and most Instagrammable studio.

In Boston, it looks like the people have spoken and the best studio for 2019 is the Handle Bar, which continues to speak to the loyal following owner Jessica Fracalossi has built at her studios across the cityit was also a Best of Boston winner last year and has repeatedly won Boston magazines own readers poll. Best female instructor was awarded to pilates instructor Kara Duval from North End Yoga and the best male instructor is Matthew Mellini from R.E.P.S., who teaches cycling.

Last year, Colin Batty and Jessie Alegra took home the awards for best male and female instructor. But really, the fitness community in Boston isnt about competition, its about the communityand no matter who ends up on top, it took the support of a whole city for them to get there.

Mellini, who found out he had won the award while vacationing in Mexico, knows this. He tells me over the phone he has never found a community like the one at their studio in Jamaica Plain. Everybody is encouraging, he says. It doesnt matter whos the fittest or the fastest, and everyone is just there to push themselves.
