Buzzy New Fitness Brand AARMY Has Already Landed its First Fashion Collaboration – Robb Report

For the founders of AARMY, the buzzy new boutique fitness brand, and Fear of God, the burgeoning streetwear empire, it seems entrepreneurship runs in the family. AARMY cofounder Angela Davis and Fear of God founder Jerry Lorenzo are sister and brother. The power siblings teamed up to create a graphic hoodie and long-sleeve tee branded with AARMYs stark white logo, and both items are available exclusively at the fitness studios two pop-up locations in New York and Los Angeles.

Davis is a Nike Master Coach who started AARMY with fellow exercise guru Akin Akman late last year to much fanfare from the regulars who swear by their classes. The concept for AARMY revolves around holistic training for the mind and body using customizable modalities (high-intensity cycling; boot camp classes; team lifting; and stretching for recovery) in a team setting designed by fashion industry vet Trey Laird. Lorenzo is known for having created a robust label around streetwear and sneakers; his own dedicated following includes Justin Bieber, who wore Fear of God on his Purpose tour. Luckily, the siblings aesthetics have a considerable amount of overlap.

The first of AARMYs two pop-up locations opened its doors in November of 2019 in New York Citys Soho neighborhood, while the Los Angeles branch got up and running in West Hollywood earlier this month. A permanent space is expected to launch sometime this spring with the same moody interiors that Laird initiated in the temporary sites.

The substantial hoodie retails for $225 and the tee $195, respectively.

Kobe Bryant Will Be Posthumously Inducted Into the Basketball Hall of Fame’s 2020 Class – POPSUGAR

As the world reels from the tragic and unexpected death of Kobe Bryant, the basketball community is preparing to honor his legacy forever. On Sunday, the 41-year-old and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, were two of nine passengers who died in a helicopter crash in Los Angeles. Celebrity tributes poured in on social media; the Grammy Awards had an extremely heavy feel to them, taking place at Staples Center just hours after his death; and the world collectively mourned the loss of the Black Mamba. On Monday, it was announced that Kobe would be posthumously inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame on the first ballot of 2020.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Chairman Jerry Colangelo said 2020 is "expected to be arguably the most epic class ever with Kobe, Tim Duncan, and Kevin Garnett. Kobe will be honored the way he should be." He added, "Bryant will be part of standard Hall of Fame screening process on Wednesday, with finalists in February at All-Star break and formal inductees at the Final 4 in April."

Jerry confirmed that there's "no doubt" Kobe will be selected. "He was going to be a first-ballot guy. There's no doubt in my mind. He's going to be honored. He's going in the Hall of Fame."

Basketball players are eligible for the Hall of Fame after they've been retired for a minimum of three seasons, and they must meet certain win qualifications. Kobe's accomplishments throughout his 20 years in the league have unquestionably put him in the Hall of Fame conversation since he retired in 2016, but following his death, the induction means even more. In December, it was announced that Kobe as well as Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Shawn Marion, and more were among the nominees.

He's a five-time NBA champion, an 18-time All Star, and a two-time finals MVP. He's the only player in NBA history to have two jersey numbers retired by one team, and he's been my hero since I was 9 years old. The "Mamba Mentality" wasn't just a work ethic Kobe embodied during the basketball season; it was his mind-blowing ability to put his heart and soul into everything he did both on and off the court.

Eat.Move.Connect. Tip: Debunking 4 common fitness myths – Crow River Media

Weight-loss tips, fad diets and more these days theyre everywhere you look. And most of it is false information. In fact, the average American wrongly assumes a daily workout must be 95 minutes or more to be impactful, according to a new study conducted by Planet Fitness.

Americans express growing frustration with fad fitness, social media fitspiration and the many myths believed to be true about health and wellness. Here are some commonly held misconceptions about fitness and the real truth behind them:

Myth: You have to put in a lot of time

On average, Americans believe they need to work out for 95 minutes for it to be beneficial. And those who dont currently belong to a gym think a single, solid workout requires two full hours of exercise to be effective.

However, recent guidelines from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services note that just 10 minutes of exercise will help raise your heart rate and maintain fitness levels.

Myth: Working out is a five-day work week

Nearly half of Americans believe you need to work out more than five times a week in order for it to be effective and thats just not true. Every single episode of physical activity can provide temporary improvements in cognitive function and levels of anxiety.

You dont have to work out seven days a week, two hours a day to get healthy, says Chris Rondeau, chief executive officer of Planet Fitness. The truth is that fitness can be fun, affordable, non-intimidating and not all-consuming. The key is to just get started and know that every minute truly matters, and over time, can have a significant positive impact.

Myth: Fitness needs to be a competition

Studies show that head-to-head challenges are demotivating to the majority of Americans who dont currently belong to a gym. In fact, 68 percent find leaderboards specifically demotivating.

When it comes to individual health, all activity counts, not just your position on a scoreboard. Find physical activity that is motivating and fun for you.

Myth: Social media helps spread the message

Quite the opposite. Common fitspo phrases such as no pain, no gain or nothing tastes as good as skinny feels are ineffective, according to most Americans. On the flip side, 65 percent say that inspirational messaging such as investing in yourself and a year from now, youll be glad you started today is motivating.

People can work out on their own terms and live healthy, happy lives, versus perpetuating certain myths that you should be living to work out, says Rondeau. Its this mentality that has kept the majority of Americans from believing that they, too, can take that first step toward better health.

Kate loves the fact she and her husband can also enjoy their mutual passion for fitness in their own gym.

She said: "It used to be, 'I'm going on holiday so I need to train every day' but it's a lifestyle now.

Realme is making a fitness tracker to compete with the Xiaomi Mi Band – TechRadar India

The cheap fitness band market is a tough space in 2020, with strong competition from Xiaomi and others, but a new entry is coming soon from Realme.

Chinese phone manufacturer Realme has previously confirmed it's working on a fitness tracker and we now know that it's coming in February this year.

An exact release date for the Realme fitness band is currently unclear, but the company's India CEO Madhav Shethat confirmed that it will be launching sometime in February.

Shethat has previously teased the device on stage by wearing it in front of a crowd, but the company has yet to reveal the specs or price of the device.

We know from this tease that it will be available in a yellow color, but it's currently unclear if other shades will also be available. It also looks to have a silicone band, which may be the only strap option available for the fitness tracker.

A press render shared recently on Weibo - a Chinese social networking site - has given us the best look yet at the Realme fitness tracker, again showing it in yellow, but it sounds like we shouldn't have long to wait until we get an even closer, official look at the device.

Realme may take to Mobile World Congress at the end of February to announce its new fitness tracker. The company also has a variety of other products in the pipeline, including headphones and power banks, so we may hear about them in February too.

Ask the Expert: What are some fitness routines to help seniors maintain good health? – The Daily Progress

What are some good exercises or fitness routines for seniors to maintain good health?

At any age, movement and exercise are essential, and as we age, this need becomes more dramatic. We need to maintain cardiovascular strength (for endurance to get out and about), muscle power (to get up and down from a chair, lift our grandkids and do projects around the house) and balance (to prevent falls). These add up to having the vitality to do things we want in life with a minimum loss of our independence. But how can we do this?

Good routines for cardiovascular exercise include 30 minutes per day of walking, swimming or social sports like tennis or pickleball. Balance exercises can include tai chi, yoga, and group balance classes. Strength training may be done in a gym with weight machines or at home with light hand weights and functional movements like sitting and standing from a chair, using your own body weight for resistance.

Research shows that substantial health benefits are achieved with 150 to 300 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercise, or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise. The important thing is to get moving and dont stop. Working with a physical therapist or a certified athletic trainer can help you do this safely in a way to meet your goals. Get moving and enjoy.

For more information about outpatient physical therapy and occupational therapy available at UVas Fontaine Research Park, visit uvahealth.com/fontainetherapy515 or uvahealth.com/fontainetherapy545.

Helen Gatling-Austin and Inga Groseclose are physical therapists with the University of Virginia Health System.

The best workout shoes for every type of exercise, according to fitness trainers – CNET

Trainers share their tried and true picks for the best workout shoes.

Whenever you start a new workout program, one of the first things you should do is decide what shoes to wear. The right type of shoes can be crucial to your workout, even if you just plan to lift weights at a gym or use the stair climber. It's even more important if you want to runor do CrossFit, where you need a shoe that supports your feet and joints.

If you're new to working out, chances are you're a bit lost about which shoes will be the best to support you in your new workout. And you don't want just any pair of shoes, especially if you're going to be investing a lot of time (and potentially money) into your new workout routine.

Shoes can ultimately be a personal preference, but if you're looking for some suggestions, the best people to ask (in my humble opinion) are fitness trainers. Why? Trainers pretty much spend 24/7 in sneakers and likely have tried them all. They know which ones to skip, which ones to invest in, and oftentimes can save you from a headache when you've just bought 4 different pairs of sneakers but hate all of them.

So let these fitness trainers save you some precious time (and hopefully money) by checking out their recommendations for the best shoes for every kind of workout. No matter if you're running, boxing, or dancing and beyond -- this guide has you covered.

"For trails, I prefer Salomon XA Pro 3D GTX. These are Gore-tex to keep your feet dry and have firm soles for added stability on the trails. The toe box is also reinforced to keep you from stubbing your toe. As these shoes are sturdier, they are good for indoor cycling and some indoor exercise classes. With a firm sole, some activities (such as calf raises) might be difficult in these shoes."

--Mollie Millington, runner and certified personal trainer.

"I love the Asics Kayano as they provide additional ankle stability for people with muscle imbalances, which we all have. Once the ankle and knees are supported correctly, the proper shoe can relieve pain in the knees and ankles and help correct over-pronation which is when your foot rolls inward, causing shin splints and can cause knee pain and swelling.

"A good stability shoe will help minimize the rolling inward and help the heel-to-toe transition slowly, correcting your running form over time.

"I personally love how light this model has become over the years. The shoe has transformed into a fashionable and light shoe while helping correct the form of our feet while we run while improving the pressure on our joints while we run with added cushioning. Every client I put in these shoes loves them, as they can be worn while strength training or running."

--Holly Roser, certified personal trainer.

"There are two main things you look for in a CrossFit shoe: durability and versatility. A good CrossFit shoe takes you from squats to rope climbs to burpee box jumps all in one workout. A good pair of CrossFit shoes feels just as comfortable during an 800-meter run as it does during a couplet of deadlifts and push-ups -- and NoBull surpasses standards for all of the above.

"NoBull shoes have a reputation for being heavy-duty yet comfortable, supportive yet flexible. Plus, they're sleek and simple, and you can choose from high-top, mid-rise and regular to find your perfect fit,"

-- Amanda Capritto, CrossFit Coach, certified personal trainer and CNET writer.

"My fave sneaker model is the Asics Gel Nimbus. They were the first pair of shoes I bought when I started training with DanceBody in 2016, and I'm seriously committed to them. I've tried a bunch of different sneaker brands and models, but I always come back to the Gel Nimbus.

"They have amazing shock absorption for high-impact movements, but are light enough that they don't feel like clunky moon shoes; the perfect balance for dance cardio."

--Sam Ostwald, trainer and instructor at DanceBody

"For boxing workouts, these are super-comfortable and feel like you're walking on clouds! I also like that they can be slip-on and not tied with laces. I do a lot of strength training and high-impact moves and have loved these shoes for the past four years. I still wear them whenever I do boxing workouts, drills and high-impact training,"

-- Amanda Alappat, former pro boxer and personal trainer.

Runners awarded at the Platte River Fitness Series Banquet – knopnews2

NORTH PLATTE, Neb It was awards night for the Platte River Fitness Series in North Platte.

Dozens of runners and their families attended a banquet at Harbor Lights where they were treated to a pasta dinner and an awards ceremony.

As the awards were announced the participants made their way to the front to claim them.

One of the winners was Jamey Swanson.

After suffering an injury which melted the bottoms of his feet and later developing a disease which will eventually cause his feet to be amputated, Swanson decided to live his life to the fullest.

"The disease, there's no cure for it. It doesn't get better it just progressively gets worse and worse," said Swanson. "I didn't want to live life being supported under some kind of device. I wanted to get out and live my life while everything is still there. I've made peace with the fact that it may get worse. I just want to enjoy life."

As a result of Swanson's new lifestyle, he has signed up for a half iron man in August.
