Midlife Fitness Files: Davina McCall on beating her sugar addiction and keeping in shape – Telegraph.co.uk
Midlife Fitness Files: The Telegraph's new health series, in which we get keep fit advice from the experts as they talk us through their weekly workouts and daily diet
Davina McCall is 52 and lives in Kent with her three children. She is currently a panellist on ITVs The Masked Singer and her next TV project will be the new series of ITVs Long Lost Family.
My weight has yo-yoed most of my life. In my early thirties, I would workout loads in the new year, then get totally unfit and start again the following year. But when I had Tily at 36 I couldnt bounce back and knew I had to get serious about fitness. Thats when I met my trainers Jackie and Mark [Wren]. Theyre responsible for a huge turnaround in my life, mentally and physically. Ive learned the yo-yo fitness thing isnt good for me but nor is being overly fit. Now, Im seeking a base level of fitness. My legs get flabby quickly and on telly I like waving my arms around in short sleeves without worrying about a bingo wing flinging around, so I want to be toned all year around.
Health is now my biggest motivator. I lost my sister Caroline to cancer when she was only 52 and my mum also to cancer. Exercise is one thing you can do to prevent all kinds of illness, so keeping fit feels like a gift to myself; an act of self-love.
Im training for a 10km run on February 9th so I do two short runs of about 20-30 minutes and one long run which is about 7-8 miles (about an hour) each week. Ill combine the short runs with a half hour intermediate home workout from ownyourgoalsdavina.com.Ive just discovered Reformer Pilates which as a game-changer, so once a week Ill run for 20 minutes to my local Pilates class, do that for an hour and then run home. On Saturday, Ill do the same thing but with a Spin class, then come home and do a ten minute abs session. About three hours a week of exercise is my ideal but if I am busy I will try do six half hours or a little less. I have a job! Its all I can manage.

How Burn Fitness Jonathan Cruz went from doctor to gym owner – Boston Herald
Sometimes, dedicating your life to wellness is exactly what the doctor prescribed. In the case of Burn Fitness Jonathan Cruz, he opted to go full-time with exercise and founded his Boston-based boutique studio after leaving the medical field.
I started teaching classes and I started to personal-train clients while I was still in medical school, Cruz told the Track of his graduate studies at Dartmouth College.
It all kind of started because I was a triathlete and needed to find ways to cross-train, he continued. I decided to try some group exercise classes and when I tried those, I decided I wanted to go and teach them.
After finishing medical school and stretching all the way through his residency, Cruz kept leading sweat sessions at least a couple of times each week. His career as a neuropathologist, which included a gig within the highly lucrative pharmaceutical industry, didnt even detract from his time in the gym.
I decided to retire early from my career and that was in 2001, but continued to teach more classes, Cruz said. But I didnt retire necessarily because I wanted to go and do this.
Cruz stressed that an early departure from the workforce was always in the cards for him. But he didnt know that his planned professional pause would only be temporary, or that it would eventually end in him becoming a gym owner. He spent a few years of his newfound free time traveling as intended until he decided he needed more.
It wasnt until years later that I decided to go back and do something completely different, Cruz said. After about four years, I came out of retirement and opened up Burn in the South End. It was about helping out people in a different way than how I was helping people before.
I wanted more stimulation so I decided to do this, to start my own business, he added. I didnt have a business background. I didnt go to business school. It was all self-taught, self-learned. It was tough. Every single day I had to wear a different hat. One day, I was the business guy. One day, I was the janitor. Another day, I was the architect.
And of course, every day Cruz is still a doctor. Its been almost six years since hes opened Burn Fitness first South End location and three years since he added its Back Bay outpost, but he still taps into his old M.D. skills.
I understand the body a lot better than other people in the fitness industry, Cruz said. It gives me a different perspective. When Im training my personal training clients, Im able to explain some of the real physiological changes that theyre going through and what were trying to do.
It helps focus on prevention of injuries and recovery from injuries because I understand the body and its different systems, he added. I do what I do because I love it. I did have a really good career before. I went through a lot of education and training, but what Im doing now is something I really enjoy.

WELLINGTON, Fla. Ultima Fitness in Wellington will close down as of 5 p.m. Friday, the gym tells WPTV.

She signed up for an annual and only got four months out of it so were just looking for a refund on the difference, Riccardy says.

Winners of the 2020 Girls and Women in Sports and Fitness Courage and Ambassador awards – Lincoln Journal Star
Lincoln Northeast's Hannah Ray finishes firstduring the A-4 district girls cross country racein October 2019 at Pioneers Park.
Gymnastics wasnt a good fit for Hannah Ray, and her 5-foot, 2-inch frame didnt lend itself to basketball.
In the fall of 2016, Beth Ray encouraged her daughter to go out for cross country at Lincoln Northeast High School. Hannah had run cross country and track in middle school, but lacked expertise in training and competing.
As a high school freshman, she started out of the blocks slowly, finishing her first race in over 23 minutes, but Coach John Snoozy and some of the upperclassmen saw potential in the diminutive freshman. Two weeks later, she cut 90 seconds off her time and earned a second-place medal at a freshman meet.
Three weeks later, she ran 20:07 at a talent-laden district meet, followed by a 19:41 and 15th place at state.
Steadily improving
Improvement has been a benchmark of her glittering career. Entering her final track season at Lincoln Northeast, the girl who once looked to carve her niche in athletics has rewritten virtually every girls distance record on the books at the esteemed 78-year-old high school.
The four-time state cross country meet qualifier and three-time Class A state medalist holds all of her high schools cross country course records, including a school all-course record time of 18 minutes, 51 seconds in the 5K.
Her senior season of cross country last fall included an individual title at the A-4 district meet, where she ran 19:07, and a fifth-place finish in a talented Class A field.
On the track oval, Hannah holds school records in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs with times of 5:08 and 11:17, respectively. Her track goals this spring are to lower her school-record time in the 1,600 meters and to finish the 3,200 meters in under 11 minutes.
Middle distance is not her forte, but she hopes to add the 800-meter mark to her slew of school records this spring.
With the girls running programs low in numbers, Hannah has found a warm reception while practicing with the Northeast boys teams. "We dont have a lot of depth in the girls programs, so theres no girl there to push me," said Hannah. "The guys have been very supportive of having me run with them."
Lincoln Northeast's Hannah Ray (4) and Lincoln Southwest's Lindsey Blehm race in the 3,200-meter run May 10, 2019 during the A-1 district track meet at Beechner Athletic Complex.
Scholarly, too
Hannah also posts impressive numbers in the classroom, where she has posted a cumulative GPA of 4.371. She plans to major in biology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Hannah has been an ambassador for our sport among others, said her head coach, John Snoozy. At this years state cross country meet, multiple coaches told me how impressed they were with Hannah as a distance runner and her display of sportsmanship with other competitors.
The daughter of Chad and Beth Ray has been selected as one of two Star City Sports Youth Athletes of the Year and will be honored at the upcoming Girls & Women in Sports & Fitness banquet.

Dana Perino: Trump impeachment and physical fitness What to do when you sit for hours watching trial – Fox News
President Trumps impeachment trial in the Senate got underway at a tough time for people trying to keep their fitness resolutions in 2020. The days are very long when each side gets (and takes) 24 hours for opening statements.
Lets take, for example, Dry January. Who among us can stick to that goal after a day of impeachment? The only thing I really wanted after a day of sitting for several hours listening to the House managers was a glass of Cabernet. Just one! I gave up on that resolution on the first day. Oh, well. Theres always next year!
And then there is the sitting. And the sitting and the sitting. Sitting is the new smoking, havent you heard? While we have been sitting and listening and we are listening, we promise! our posture is compromised and our legs are going numb. It is like we are on a non-stop flight around the world. And the entertainment system stopped working after the first hour.
GREGG JARRETT: UNDER DEMS TRUMP IMPEACHMENT JUSTIFICATION, LINCOLN WOULDVE BEEN IMPEACHED
I asked my fitness trainer what he suggested I do during these long days in a chair. Aside from getting a workout in the morning and some yoga or Pilates after work, here are his suggestions:
Fox News impeachment coverage features Juan Williams, Dana Perino, Andrew McCarthy and Katie Pavlich
Blood flow and circulation
At least once an hour, do some ankle rolls, point and flex your feet, and extend your leg from your knee. Do some neck rolls to keep your shoulders and upper back from getting too tight. Just like being on a long flight.
Higher-intensity squats. Every time you stand up and sit down counts. (Note: this is a bit hard to do sitting next to my colleagues and being on camera, but I get his point).
Mobility
Keep everything moving that you can. Simple neck rolls, arm circles, chest stretch with hands clasped behind your back, standing hip flexor and quad stretch, Figure Four stretch, waiters bow ... you get the idea.
Reducing tension
Release muscle tension and deal with boredom or frustration when you cant move (he knows me ... and impeachment ... well).
Progressive relaxation (focus on each body part starting at the feet and working your way up and spend a few seconds getting it to relax. By the time you get to your head, you should feel calmer for a while).
Box breathing (imagine a box then breathe in for four counts, hold for four counts, breathe out for four counts, and hold again for another four counts before starting the cycle again). This can also help with falling asleep.

Hydration
Drink 8 ounces every two hours or less (more reason to leave and use the restroom, which means standing and walking).
Nutrition
Small snacks, like collagen bars, dont have too much sugar ... but allow you to consume enough energy to stay awake!

Finally, I asked about the wine. Oh, definitely. You can have wine.
Hes the best.
Ive managed to do most of these things during the first week of impeachment wish me luck for the second week!

People who sit at their desk all day and people who sit in front row of spin class, being stretched by someone else is a lot more effective and enjoyable.
Marathon runner, Yosef Herzog comes here twice a week.
This place has helped me round out my recovery and ascend my prevention arsenal.
The owners of Stretch*d even said stretching can give you some height by improving your posture.

Fitness tips: how to begin with online yoga – The Guardian
Choose a good spot Find a comfortable, quiet space, with room for your mat and for you to stretch your arms out and up. Make sure you can see the screen clearly: once youre used to the postures, youll rely on it less. Wear fitted clothes so they dont hang over your face when your heads lowered, and no socks.
Pay attention You wont have a teacher to help with alignment, so watch the instructor carefully; avoid poses that might hurt your neck, or that involve twisting too much. If something feels too complicated, stop. Start with an easier style, such as hatha.
Find a teacher you like Spend time looking for a teacher who resonates with you. You could try 50 classes before deciding on the right person. Choose levels and styles that work for you. You can repeat classes you enjoy as many times as you want.
Stay motivated Try to allocate a regular time for your practice. Subscribe to a channel, so you receive notifications when classes are posted, and participate in an online challenge for a month, say.
