Planet Fitness Just Opened Its 2,000th Location – Motley Fool

Planet Fitness (NYSE:PLNT) rang in the new year by celebrating a milestone. The gym operator and franchiser opened its 2,000th location on Dec. 31, in Colorado Springs. This capped off an impressive year of opening 261 new locations for 15% unit growth. Now the company has its sights squarely set on the next milestone: its 3,000th location. With over 1,000 new locations currently in its pipeline, this milestone could be reached in the next three to five years.

But more than just continuing to expand the brand by opening new locations, Planet Fitness is also trying to overcome misconceptions by the public regarding fitness. The company recently sponsored an independent study that came back with four widely-held fitness myths. Dispelling them could lead to increased gym membership.

The company's Bullfit Report addresses four common myths about fitness.First, according to the report, as little as 10 minutes of exercise can yield results, not the 95 minutes that the average person thinks are required. Second, you don't need to work out five days a week for it to be effective; any time you spend exercising is beneficial. Third, head-to-head fitness challenges don't work. And fourth, most people are not motivated by common catchphrases like "No pain, no gain," but some inspirational phrases (like "Investing in yourself") can be highly motivating.

At the beginning of 2015, just prior to Planet Fitness's IPO, the company had 918 locations and 6.1 million members. That works out to over 6,600 members per location. As of the third quarter of 2019, it had 1,899 locations and 14.1 million members. That means the number of members per location has increased to over 7,400.

Planet Fitness estimates that 80% of people 14 years and older in the U.S. and Canada still don't belong to a gym. This is the crowd that it targets. It has built its empire quickly by making its gyms "Judgment Free Zones," catering to the casual gym-goer who doesn't want to feel intimidated by bodybuilders.

This strategy has proved effective. But there's still plenty of room for the company to continue growing its members-per-location metric. One way it can do this isby using the Bullfit Report to bust the myths that prevent folks from joining a gym in the first place.

As already mentioned, Planet Fitness now has 2,000 locations (primarily in the U.S.) and over 1,000 locations already in development. But just how much further can this growth-stock story run? CEOChris Rondeau reiterated during the Q3 earnings call that the company is targeting 4,000 locations in the U.S. alone. That means Planet Fitness is still just halfway through with its domestic growth, despite its strong growth over the past five years.

Furthermore, Planet Fitness has a largely untapped international growth opportunity. In 2017, it signed a franchise agreement in Panama, and in 2018, it signed one for Mexico. More recently, the company signed a franchise agreement to open a minimum of 35 locations in Australia. Even though this shows some effort, international expansion is still a small part of the Planet Fitness story.

It may simply be an issue of focus, with Planet Fitness giving full attention to its thriving U.S. operations. But this could start to change within the next couple of years. On the Q3 earnings call, Rondeau commented that chief development officerRay Miolla is approaching two years at Planet Fitness, and in about another year, Miolla's "international focus will be quite a bit stronger."

Investors should celebrate the 2,000th Planet Fitness milestone. A lot can go wrong while expanding, but the company is pulling it off quickly and efficiently. For now, investor attention should remain on U.S. operations, where it would be great to see membership per location continue to increase. Any drop in this metric in coming quarters would be a major red flag.

Also, there's no reason to fret that the growth-via-expansion story is coming to an end. Planet Fitness believes it can still double the number of U.S. locations compared to today, and its current development pipeline already covers half of that future expansion. When the time comes, it will turn its attention to the rest of the (ahem) planet.

Embrace winter with these ideas for fitness, family fun – Buffalo News

It can be a challenge to embrace healthy activities during winter in the region, especially when running, biking and the outdoor fitness classes of summer seem so distant.

At the dreariest of times, hibernation looks to present a much better option.

Still, with a little vitamin D and some thoughtful consideration, the coming weeks can mean more than binge-watching Netflix and binge-eating pizza and wings.

It appears were even in for some snow, which can open a larger window onto outdoor opportunities when it comes in reasonable amounts.

The message we want to get out is there's so many things happening within our 10,000 acres of parks alone, Erie County Parks Commissioner Troy Schinzel said.

A dozen county parks and recreation areas provide daily choices, when the weather is right, for skiing, skating and sledding and there is lots more to do elsewhere, too.

Here are our WNY Refresh recommendations for a variety of activities that can warm the body, boost the blood flow and expand the mind for those of any age.

The Ice at Canalside has become a popular gathering point on the Buffalo waterfront in recent years but is hardly alone when it comes to the opportunity to strap on a pair of skates in the region and go for a glide. Outdoor rinks cooled with chillers also include Rotary Rink at Fountain Plaza downtown and Healthy Zone Rink in East Aurora.

Rinks that need help from below-freezing temperatures include those at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, Reservoir and DeVeaux Woods state parks in Niagara Falls, and Akron Falls and Como Lake county parks in Akron and Cheektowaga. The bad news: Skate rentals arent available except at MLK Park. The good news: Skating is free.

Many municipalities also have public skate times at one or more indoor rinks, including three in the City of Buffalo, where you can visit haseksheroes.org or northbuffalorink.com to learn more.

Add Chestnut Ridge Park to the spots where downhill skiing and snowboarding is available this season for the first time in more than two decades. Erie County installed a new Austrian-made ski tow that will allow both activities alongside, but separate from, the toboggan shoots and sledding hill in Orchard Park. All are free. The park will celebrate Winterfest from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday regardless of snow, with magic shows, other childrens activities and more. Emery Park in South Wales offers downhill skiing, too.

Ski resorts and clubs also dot the region. They include Holiday Valley in Ellicottville, Kissing Bridge in Glenwood and Peekn Peak Resort in Clymer.

Cross-country skiing awaits just about anywhere in public parks and forest lands and along public trails. Hotspots include groomed trails at Elma Meadows in Elma and Sprague Brook in Glenwood (both Erie County parks), as well as the Art Roscoe Recreation Area at Allegany State Park in the Southern Tier and Reinstein Woods State Park in Cheektowaga.

No experience? No problem. At 10 a.m. on weather-cooperative Sunday mornings, James Klein, head of the Buffalo Nordic Ski Club (buffalonordic.org), leads lessons that start at the Rose Garden in Delaware Park.

The number of bicyclists and runners have grown exponentially during the last half-decade, as have the number of organized rides and races. When conditions are favorable with the right clothes and gear in hand there also are opportunities in winter. GObike Buffalo plans at least two more snow rolls in the region before spring, including the next one at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at Massachusetts Avenue Park on Winter Street. Albright-Knox Art Gallery may have closed its Elmwood Avenue campus for a $165-million revamping, but related activities for families continue at its new project space at 612 Northland Ave. That includes art classes for children and teens, and Family Funday the second Sunday of each month, with pay-as-you-wish admission and special programing that includes baby stroller and family fun art tours as well as drop-in art activities. Family fun also includes the Explore & More Museum (exploreandmore.org), which opened last summer on the Buffalo waterfront with four floors of hands-on exhibits that bow to regional, cultural, fitness, health and recreational themes. Admission generally is charged (BlueCross BlueShield of WNY members get $1 off with proof of membership at check-in). Admission is free during Fearless Family Play Days from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. the first Saturday of each month.

The Buffalo Museum of Science (sciencebuff.org) also is a great choice this time of year and on Feb. 8 the museum will host the U.S. debut of the temporary exhibit Golden Mummies of Egypt. The international tour will include items usually housed at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, which boasts a collection of Egyptian artifacts considered among the richest in the world. Timed tickets in 15-minute intervals are available in advance on the museum website. The cost is $19 for adults, and $16 for children aged 2-17, as well as seniors, students and members of the military with ID. The ticket includes access to museum exhibit spaces such as Biodiversity, Buffalo in Space, Bugworks, Explore You, In Motion and more.

Dance Fitness Classes Infected My Whole Body – The Cut

Hot Bod is a weekly exploration of fitness culture and its adjacent oddities.

Not to brag, but a couple months ago I was at a party, and not to brag but Janelle Mone filmed a music video in a booth where I have kissed someone, really no need to keep asking so much about it. The party is a cute jostling monthly dance night, filled with citrus-forward drinks and glance-y queer energy. My trio found a genuinely good corner by the less ruined couch to dance to Crush, when this gorgeous dream was broken. My right arm flung upward like an eel only to SLOWLY LINGER back down to my side, like I was depositing a gutterball. The left arm repeated. Gutterball #2. My friends face collapsed in curious horror, like WHAT DID YOU JUST DO TWICE?

What I had just done was a Fitness Dance Move TM. A languid Broadway-inspired flourish that Id learned in a class that promised it was aerobic hip-hop. It had pushed itself through my body, against all my will and want, like a fart. A person is powerless in a follow-along class, but even that morning I was like, Please dear limbs, lets never do this accented inflatable tube-man swizzle. Muscle memory always betrays. I did an arm swizzle around people who are babes! You looked like youd learned it to a Bruno Mars song, my friend guessed, unkindly.

For me, dance fitness classes are always an uneasy truce with cheesiness. Theyre a preferred structured exercise, because theyre the most distracting way to exhaust yourself. If you squint, you can pretend youre at a party! Depending on the season and my schedule, Ive gone religiously. Ive been loyal to a day-glo Fitness Rave on Tuesday evenings taught by an instructor I only know as Hyperbody. Ive gone to Meuv8 on Mondays and reggaeton on Fridays at Heartbeat House, kicky punk Pony Sweat on Monday nights, high intensity hip-hop before anything is alive on Thursday mornings with JJ Dancer or 305. The two summers I lived in Chicago, dance classes at 360 MBS were my respite.

But I always stand at the middle-side (hidden by a pack yet on the outskirts, the place of purest shame) as an endlessly coordinated backup dancer for like, Jason DeRulo or someone, treats us like were her favorite campers. Strut, POSE, feel sexy, feel yourself, and master combinations that telegraph: Watch out, mister, Ill break your heart! These convulsions are wrung into the body through repetitive motion.

Unfortunately these motions emerge as choreography for the casual event. It appears as if Ive studied for the party. Look at these moves Ive prepared for this dance floor. And just wait, Ive got a tangy shoulder snap for you! Wow, look at this hand-on-the-hip wriggle. Didnt see that dirty move coming did you? Its all the neediness of a flash mob, but alone. Its sassy.

In the wild, you can sniff out aerobic dance attendees if you know what to look for. The moves switch up seasonally-ish and regionally-ish. There was a brief monolith period, circa 2014, when Shakiras Waka Waka was taught in every Zumba and faux-Zumba class. If it played on a dance floor, Id reliably see the signature cactus-arms waggling from the music video. There were several months of structured knee spasms in late 2017, then a season of winding it down, winding it to the side. Repeating these motions in public is, socially, akin to inflicting your rehearsal for the fifth-grade talent show onto the world.

My problem with fitness dance classes is actually a problem with the unreliability of dancing in the world. Aerobic dance classes always feel like a substitute to the real, dirty-flirty thing. Theyre a little imitation crab. I go to cheerful, empowering 7 a.m. hip-hop classes only because the dance floor is too fragile an ecosystem for my appetite. Its prone to clogs, aggressive elbows, and obscure sadist Tbilisi-originated drone music. Went looking for a bliss shake to Normani; found a space to slouch by the doorframe so someone can yell gossip in my ear.

It hurts to admit, but the dance floor is a promise you cant trust. Unfortunately, I want what I want all the time. And Ive lived in America my whole adult life, where I learned I dont have to wait for anything. If Im willing to pay the price of money and casual embarrassment, theres a wholesome alternative for sale. I can schedule a routine and regular dance floor experience with fitness classes, where I wont be jostled. Like the more boring friend, they are completely reliable. And like the more boring friend, I should be less embarrassed when theyre a dweebo on the dance floor. Were really the same, she and I.

Strength is just one thing women and men gain at Revolution Fitness Clubs – WTNH.com

NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) Those who work out at Revolution Fitness Clubs in North Haven say there is something very comfortable about the environment. It is state of the art with the latest fitness equipment, but it is the strength training provided here that draws people from far and wide.

23 year old Kelsey Butler-Waitkus is a software engineer in the male-dominated defense industry. She wasnt athletic growing up. Almost five years ago she started lifting weights, and now competes in powerlifting competitions. She enjoys the physical strength she has gained and also the confidence it has given her in the workplace.

Especially foryoung women to have that confidence. To be able to go and translate things likelifting into their daily lives is so beneficial, she says.

43 year old TinaCaplan lost sixty pounds in the past year and says she is now off of heranxiety medication thanks to strength training. There is nothing like hittinga three hundred and twenty five pound deadlift first thing in the morning. Nothingelse youre gong to do all day long is going to seem daunting after that, saysCaplan.

Paul Milano is thetrainer at Revolution Fitness Clubs. He enjoys seeing the increased confidencein people as they get stronger. People often think of strength training as ameans to get physically stronger but the benefits to strength training go wayoutside of the gym, says Milano.

Throughout JanuaryRevolution Fitness Clubs is running a Use it or Lose it program. The cost is $100.00. If someone trains twelve times within 30 days of signing up they can apply that amount toward more training sessions at the gym or a Revolution Fitness Clubs membership.

FIT LIFE: Fitness by the Decade: Your 40’s – KY3

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Fitness in your 40s is all about preserving muscle mass.

Unless you are strength training, you start losing about five pounds of muscle per decade. Not only does this mean reduced functional capacity, but it could also be part of midlife weight gain.

Your goal to keep (perhaps even add) muscle is to do full-body strength training three days per week. These strength workouts should be focused on compound movements. Compound movements (like squats, bench presses, push-ups, chin-ups and rows) work multiple muscle groups, giving you an efficient way to get a better burn in your workout.

You'll also need to allow time between these workouts for muscle recovery.

Since it starts to take longer to recover in your 40s, you'll need at least one day off from strength training in between each full-body workout.

To help with recovery, it's also time to stop shortchanging your sleep! The body does its most important recovery and resetting functions while we sleep, so aim for at least seven hours per night.

The Lerna resident charged with murder in the death of his infant son will be evaluated as to his fitness to stand trial.

21-year-old Isaac Currey was arrested in December after authorities were called to his house regarding an unresponsive four-month-old. The infant was pronounced dead at the scene.

Testimony at a hearing following the arrest was that the infant's injuries were inflicted on him and not the result of a fall as Currey reportedly told authorities.

In court Thursday, Currey pleaded not guilty to the two murder counts he faces and requested a jury trial. During the hearing, prosecutors requested a fitness evaluation for Currey. There was no objection raised by the defense, and psychologist Dr. Jerry Boyd was assigned to conduct the evaluation.

A status hearing in Currey's case was set for March 12.

Brain fitness class to be offered in Charleston – Standard-Democrat

CHARLESTON, Mo. A four-session brain fitness class, which aims to boost memory and health, will be offered next month in Charleston.

University of Missouri Extension will offer a Boost Your Brain and Memory brain fitness class at the Mississippi County Library, 105 E. Marshall St., in Charleston beginning Feb. 18.

Just as you can control and improve your general physical health with good habits, so, too, can you improve the health of your brain boosting your memory and mental agility, as well as reducing your risk of developing Alzheimers Disease or other dementia, said Mary Engram, field specialist in human development and family science for the University of Missouri Extension in Charleston.

The four-session workshop, which is open to any and all participants, will be held on Tuesdays, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 18, 25 and March 3, 10.

I have offered this in a number of places, but this is the first time in Charleston. Its really popular and presents new information about brain health and there has been a lot of new information in the last few years.

While the class is typically comprised of middle-age to an older audience, it is open to anyone, and all ages would benefit from attending, she said.

This is about making good health choices, and if we make them at a younger age, its even better, Engram said.

The terms dementia and Alzheimers disease can be confusing, and many people believe they are synonymous, but the two words mean different things, according to the Alzheimers Association.

Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimers is the most common cause of dementia. Alzheimers is a specific disease. Dementia is not.

Although research is finding links between genes and ones risk of Alzheimers disease, the exact cause is more likely a combination of genetics and other factors, Engram said. Practicing good brain health at any age can help stave off the disease, as well as build up your cognitive reserve, she said.

The class uses a whole-person approach that helps you form new habits to live a healthier lifestyle, remember things better, be more organized, pay closer attention, and regulate your emotions, Engram said.

Each participant will receive a workbook including memory exercises, tips on nutrition and exercise, and summaries of evidence-based research on brain health. There is a class fee of $40.

It is a four-session class, and youll get the most benefit if you attend all four sessions, Engram said.

The deadline to register is Feb. 14.

The need to offer a class like this comes from the overall rise in the statistics of Alzheimers disease, Engram said.

An estimated 5.8 million Americans are living with Alzheimers disease, according to the Alzheimers Association. This number includes 5.6 million people age 65 and older and approximately 200,000 individuals under age 65 who have younger-onset Alzheimers.

By 2050, the number of Americans living with Alzheimers is projected to rise to nearly 14 million, the Alzheimers Association said.

Our aim is to help participants implement new habits to maintain cognitive health while also practicing new skills for better memory, Engram said.

Fitness industry shapes up with new ideas – Business Observer

A new year, as always, brings new plans of attack in the battle for health and fitness dollars. Tampa Bay, with its influx of young professionals and families, is a heavyweight infitness industry innovation, with three new concepts debuting recently.

Gretchen Mitchell, who has a background in entrepreneurship and banking, has opened a Regymen Fitness franchise at 23684 U.S. Highway 19 N. in Clearwater. Baton Rouge, La.-headquartered Regymen, she tells Coffee Talk, is a very different concept.

Mitchell, 46, likens the experience to working out in a nightclub. The instructor-led group fitness classes are conducted in a darkened space with dramatic lighting. If you put people in a dark environment and introduce artificial lights, they can more easily let go of the outside world, she says. We want our members to just let go of their stress.

Abdul-Wasai Wasim, meanwhile, has launched GymBursement, which isnt a gym or fitness centerbut an app that incentivizes people to work out. Wasim, 30, aspired to be an occupational therapist before dropping out of Florida Gulf Coast University and turning to software and app development.

Going to the gym has always been a hard problem, he tells Coffee Talk. I wanted to come up with an idea that would motivate me. But a lot of apps are based on steps. I dont really walk around for fitness. I like to lift weights, play basketball, go swimming.

GymBursement rewards visits to the gym with credits that can be used to buy discounted food, vitamins, supplements and other health and wellness items offered by local vendors. With around 1,700 users and available only in Tampa and Orlando, the app is in the early stages of development, but Wasim who also created an app for the private security industry called SAYF says plans are in the works to roll it out in New York, Miami, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Houston and Dallas.

Finally, theres Mayweather Boxing + Fitness, the boxing- and group-fitness concept created by heavyweight legend Floyd Mayweather. A new franchise, owned and operated by Dan Page, opened at 447 99thAve N. in St. Petersburg Jan. 11. According to a press release, Page had already signed up 250 members prior to opening and has plans to develop a second location, in Largo, in April.

Anytime Fitness offers health and wellness facility, guidance – The Courier-Express

ST. MARYS The staff at the newly-opened Anytime Fitness facility on South St. Marys Street focuses on helping members reach their health and fitness goals, said General Manager Erica Kruse.

Kruse, a Ridgway native who studied sports management and exercise science, said the facility opened Sept. 17, 2019.

Memberships were sold from June through September. The entire facility was gutted, Kruse said, after it sat empty for 15 years.

There are 4,800 Anytime Fitness locations worldwide, Kruse said, with the franchise based in Ohio, which has 22 locations. Locations were also just opened in Bradford and Warren, Pennsylvania.

Our mission is to go into rural areas and impact lives through health and wellness, she said.

The St. Marys location was very much a need in the area, Kruse said, since there are few fitness facilities nearby. It has attracted members from just about everywhere in Elk County, including Ridgway, Johnsonburg, Kane, Wilcox and Weedville, she said.

Since Anytime Fitness is a 24-hour facility, it benefits people from all walks of life, including factory workers who might work later shifts, Kruse adds.

Anytime Fitness personal training manager is Cody Anderson, and its two personal trainers are Jerod Miller and Stanley Titanski. Connie Herbstritt is the member experience manager.

Herbstritt makes sure members know how the equipment works and how to prevent injury, Kruse said. She also helps with providing monthly grocery lists and meal plans. Anderson does fitness consultations, learning about a members medical history, injuries and more, then creating a personalized workout based on that information.

St. Marys has been very accepting of Anytime Fitness, Kruse said, and it has been steadily busy since the opening.

It also has a Member of the Month program under which a client is recognized for his or her hard work.
